Lesson Topic: Timber joints - The Rebate joint Recent Prior Experience (specific relevant concepts, skills and values the school students have experienced prior to this lesson):
Students have practiced marking out and cutting of wood using chisels, saws and scroll saw accurately in preparation for the assessment task project. Student were also directed to read pages regarding joints and their use.
Syllabus Outcome(s): One or two only. Please note the syllabus reference number AND write out in full.
- 4.2.2 identifies and uses a range of hand and machine tools in different technological environments.
- 4.5.1 applies learnt skills, processes and materials to a variety of contexts and projects
Indicators of Learning for this lesson: Behaviors that contribute toward achievement of outcome(s). Quote syllabus numbers. Must be clear, specific, observable. Curriculum Content Strands may be used as headings.
By the end of this lesson, the students will: - Show the correct selection of tools and techniques before commencing work on the joint.
- Demonstrate the ability to mark out accurately the rebate joint.
- Show correct cutting technique, both in terms of safety and accuracy. Assessment: Strategies which will be used to assess learners attainment of learning outcomes. Should be linked to each learning indicator.
- Observe Ss during lesson to ensure they are using the correct techniques shown both for cutting and marking out of timber.
- Towards end of lesson each student will present their rebate joint to teacher for inspection and feedback.
- End of lesson review of knowledge. Any safety issues to be considered: - Ensure dust extractor is turned on for use in tandem with machines. - Ensure students are working safely with tools and within the workshop. e.g. no running. -Ensure students use safety glasses when operating machinery and cutting/chiseling timber. Resources: List resources you used in preparing the lesson AND those used in the lesson implementation. - Board of Studies NSW (2003) Industrial Technology Years 7-10 Syllabus. Sydney: BOS - Whiteboard for drawing of rebate joint during demonstration. - Tenon saws, chisels, rule's, tri squares, pins & hammers located in workshop. - Allotments of wood for each student to practices rebate joint. - Ss aprons and safety glasses, not allowed to commence practical if they have not brought these items, Will have to sit at side table and copy notes on Workplace Health & Safety from textbook. LESSON SEQUENCE Lesson Content / Indicators of Learning (What is Taught): Note key skills, concepts and values addressed in each section. Link to your Indicators of Learning. Timing (mins) Teaching Strategies / Learning Experiences: (How it is taught) Write detailed steps showing what the teacher (T) will do and what students (Ss) will do. Resources and Organisation:
INTRODUCTION
Identifies and uses a range of hand and machine tools used in creating a rebate joint. Q/ What are joints? A/ The joining together of two pieces of wood to produce a more complex item or whole shape. Q/ Why are joints used in tandem with screws/pins/nails? A/ It creates a stronger bond compared to using solely screws/nails/pins. Q/ What tools are best suited for cutting a rebate joint? A/ Either a chisel or tenon saw. Can also be a combination of the two.

T unlocks door of workshop and directs students to move inside, set aside their bags and put on aprons and safety glasses. T uses names and eye contact to settle over-active students before lesson can start. Directs students to gather 1 meter around the front table. T calls roll.
T commences with demonstration on the rebate joint. T reminds Ss to raise hand to answer questions during demonstration. T uses white board to first draw rebate joint and discuss its applications with Ss drawing on knowledge gained from previous required readings. Write out steps for marking and cutting joint in numbered order.
T then demonstrates marking out of rebate joint on 2 pieces of timber showing proper technique using tri square and rule.
T then demonstrates cutting technique for both chisel and tenon saw on rebate joint. Intentionally changes stance and grip of tools to incorrect technique and asks Ss what is wrong with current stance and grip to ensure students identify the correct techniques to use when cutting. T demonstrates joining of rebate joint using pins/nails and timber glue. T refers to steps on board throughout whole demonstration process.

Two pieces of timber, one to show cutting of joint using chisel and the other to show cutting of joint using tenon saw.

T then assigns Ss timber to allow them to practice marking out and cutting the rebate joint either using the chisel or tenon saw method. DEVELOPMENT
Applies learnt skills, processes and materials to creating a rebate joint.
Q/ What is the proper grip when holding the tenon saw? A/ A pistol grip. Q/ Which directing do you cut with the chisel? A/ Away from your body to avoid any self harm. Q/ What is the correct stance when cutting? (for right handed Ss) A/ Left foot in front of the right. Q/ When do you wear your safety glasses and why? A/ Any time you are cutting or chiseling timber to prevent chips flying into your eyes.
12:30
Ss commence practice on marking out and cutting rebate joint.
T roves around the workshop observing students and rendering assistance when Ss is struggling.
T also points out to Ss any observed improper safety procedures ( not using safety glasses) and incorrect techniques when cutting timber ( incorrect stance or grip of saw/chisel).
Ss are allowed to collaborate and discuss but must each mark and cut out their own rebate joint before the end of the lesson.
Ss that has finished marking and cut out of joint will then proceed to join with glue and pins.
Ss that has finished the rebate joint is then permitted to help other students with their work.
T advises students of remaining time throughout lesson to ensure time is managed appropriately by Ss.
Ss can refer to drawing and list of steps on white board if stuck.

T directs all students to stop working and commence cleanup of workshop.
All works will be placed in appropriate class box.
T ensures all students are either sweeping, vacuuming or putting away tools
T reviews what Ss have learnt and completed during practical.
T questions Ss knowledge regarding rebate joints and proper tools technique and use when marking out and cutting.
T dismisses Ss when bell rings.
