THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH

Series: School Of Christ

Lesson #2
Jn. 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, if ye continue in my word, then
are ye my disciples indeed;
Jn. 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Jn. 8:33 They answered him, We be Abrahams seed, and were never in bondage to any man:
how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
Jn. 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the
servant of sin.
Jn. 8:35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
Jn. 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Jn. 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a
murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in
him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of
it.
Jn. 8:45 And because I tell you the truth, you believe me not.
Jn. 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the
Father, but by me.
Jn. 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not,
neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Jn. 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even
the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Rom. 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Rom. 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature
more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Eph. 4:21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
Eph. 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true
holiness.
Rev. 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is
holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man
shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
Rev. 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the
Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;
I. Recapping.
1. We are going to recap a bit of the first lesson. We saw that the first great work of the
Holy Spirit is to present Christ to the heart as Gods object for all the Holy Spirits
dealings with us.
2. Next, the Holy Spirit makes known the divine purpose in connection with that inward
revelation of the Lord Jesus; namely, that we should be conformed to the image of
Gods Son.
3. God says, This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased (Mt. 3:17). That
simply says that Gods total delight is Christ. God has nothing short of that in mind
for the body of Christ. His purpose is to bring us into conformity to that image. That
is the purpose, to bring us to a place of self-emptying that that mind might be in us
which was in Christ.
4. It is not a matter of you and I making it to be, but it is a matter of you and I wanting it
to be bad enough that we let it be; that we allow the Holy Spirit to do it.
5. The dynamics, which cause this to be, are all in motion by the grace of God and the
Spirit of God. It is not something that we can of our own will initiate, but of His own
will, He begot us.
6 There is nothing in us that can produce this. There is no obligation on Gods part to
us, but of His own will He initiated this redemptive plan. He is a redemptive God.
He is a restoring God. He knows His thoughts towards us, and they are thoughts of
peace, and not evil.
7. It is very important that you know this, because the path of God will lead you to face
the wilderness in your own heart, and you will think that you are heading in the
opposite direction which God said He was going to take you.
8. When the children of Israel left Egypt, they knew they were going to Canaan. Six
weeks out of Egypt they were farther away from their destination than when they left.
9. They kept going south, but thats where the cloud was, thats where the manna was,
and thats where they were suppose to be. It does not matter what it looked like.
What did matter, was that they were following God, following the cloud.
10. Follow the cloud. God is speaking to you and I through His word, and that is the
cloud, the cloud of God, the Word of God). It is a simple rule. If the cloud moves,
then follow the cloud. If the cloud doesnt move, sit still. If it didnt move when we
thought it ought to have moved, follow it anyway. God isnt asking our suggestions.
11. Sometimes the cloud moves at night, sometimes in the morning. Dont lock God into
a certain way that Hes got to do something. God is going to move.
a. He is moving. It is a matter of recognizing what He is doing and allowing it to
happen in our lives.
b. Its a matter of recognizing that this great Spirit of truth has come to guide us
into all truth. That truth is Christ, and the purpose is that He is conforming us to
His (Christs) image.
12. The Holy Spirit works to bring us to the place where we realize how impossible the
situation is apart from the miracles of God, and that of ourselves we can never be like
Christ.
II. I Am That I Am. That Is What God Said. Jesus Said, I Am The Truth.
1. Knowing the truth is knowing the Son of God.
2. Freedom by truth is freedom by the knowledge of Jesus Christ.
3. The truth is not something, the truth is a Person.
4. This is all in the school of Christ, bearing upon Christ as the truth.
5. It is very important that we have a true foundation, and the supreme feature in the
foundation is truth.
6. This foundation has to take a responsibility no less than our eternal well being and
destiny, the very vindication of God Himself. When they see Christ in us it proves
that God raised Him from the dead.
7. So great are the consequences that we cannot afford to have anything doubtful in our
position.
8. The Holy Spirit has been sent as the Spirit of truth to guide us into all truth.
9. The Holy Spirit will deal with all disciples in the school of Christ to undercut
everything that is not true.
10. I am referring there specifically to what we read in Matthew 3:17, This is my
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
III. See That Ye Refuse Not Him That Speaketh (Heb. 12:25).
Heb. 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him
that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that
speaketh from heaven:
Heb. 12:26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once
more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
Heb. 12:27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are
shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may
remain.
Heb. 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace,
whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
1. We our direction from God. Our goal is to bring joy to the heart of God.
2. In the book of Nehemiah, we see Nehemiahs choices in life was that, he so lived to
bring joy to the heart of God. God let him know of the joy that He had, because of
the choices Nehemiah made, upon which he hung his very life. Nehemiah in turn let
us know that His Lords joy was his strength.
3. It is the will of the Lord, for us to so live, that we bring joy to God.
4. When we get so distracted by the things of the world that we are not spiritually aware
that there is a God, much less that our choices in life can bring joy to Him we then
have no source of strength except a kind of counterfeit joy that we talk ourselves into.
That joy is always short-lived, and leads to frustration.
5. So, the work of the Spirit moves us to undercut everything that is not Christ.
6. Where is this life that is acceptable to God? It comes from hearing what He has to
say, and responding. See that ye refuse not
7. We think we have done all in accepting the position of responsibility that God has put
on His church. We have the Holy Ghost, we have Gods power in us, and we think
that means we just throw it into neutral, cut our heads off, never to think anymore.
Whatever God wants to do, we say, He will do.
8. It doesnt work like that! I am responsible to hear the voice of God, what God is
saying. Im responsible to treat God like He is somebody worthy to be heard, worthy
to be sought.
9. He is a treasure. If I dont seek after Him, I wont find Him. He is not going to force
himself on us, but He is the God who rewards those who seek Him.
10. I am responsible for getting hold of God. I am responsible for how I direct my
actions based on what God reveals to me in His word. See that ye refuse not
What did He say? He said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
11. I want to give a warning to you right now. I know what God is saying to the church
of Jesus Christ. I believe that God is going to manifest His power on planet earth,
through the church, before the rapture, in an unprecedented way.
12. I am not putting anything before the rapture, but I am saying my heart believes that
God, through this vessel called the church, is going to manifest Himself. I believe
that God is going to show this earth that Jesus is Lord.
13. He is not going to do it through gimmicks or some new doctrine, and He is not going
to do it through the power of the Moral Majority.
14. He is going to do it through saints of God who walk in holiness and purity, who have
the esteemed position of being the Temple of God, the habitation for the Holy Ghost,
and the lordship of Jesus Christ.
15. He comes to be Lord. He doesnt come to be your pal. He doesnt come to make all
of our wishes come true. He comes as a sovereign, all-wise, all-knowing Lord. He
comes in power with a plan of redemption that was formed in the mind of God before
the foundation of the world.
16. There is nothing in my life that even comes close to being worthy of changing that
plan.
17. I am to be submitted to God in my attitude every day. I am to submit in repentance,
and develop an attitude of submission. I am to walk in forgiveness and in faith.
18. It is not enough, if somebody does me wrong to forgive him. I must get up from the
place of prayer and enter my day with my mind already made up, that if anybody
offends me, they are already forgiven. Why? Because I am determined to walk with
the mind of Christ. This is where God is taking us.
IV. The Need For A True Foundation.
1. To bring this about, you and I, under the Holy Spirits teaching, have to be dealt with
very faithfully. We have to come to the place where we are perfectly adjustable
before God, where there is all responsiveness to the Holy Spirit.
2. The alternative to such a work of the Holy Spirit being allowed to be done in us, is
we shall find ourselves in a false position. The constitution of this work is a lie.
3. We are men and women without options. There is no choice in this matter. I am the
clay. He, God, is the potter. The clay cannot say to the potter, why have you made
me thus? That is why Paul says, dont compare yourselves one with another, for this
is not wise.
4. We all want to be sure that nobody gets ahead of us in any pursuit. That is temporal,
carnal, fleshy thinking. There is no carnal Christianity.
5. I believe in the Holy Ghost life in the believer that magnifies and displays Christ to
an unbelieving world through the actions of the believer.
6. I respect you for paying tithes. I respect you for all the areas of your life in which
you have been responsible. But if in any area you have been stubborn toward God, I
beseech you to tear that idolatry down, so that God can be God in your life.
7. You are the reason He has done what He has done. Dont rob Him of the joy of
pouring forth on you a blessing that cannot be contained. Stubbornness has no part in
the church.
8. Jesus learned obedience by the things He suffered. I think I might be able to do the
same.
V. The Second Warning I Have For You Is In 1 Timothy 4:1. This Has Taken Its Toll In
Pentecostal Circles.
1Tim. 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the
faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
1. Is Mormonism a doctrine of devils? Thats easy to identify. Jehovahs Witness? Jim
Jones cult? Those kinds of doctrines of devils present no danger in Pentecostal
circles.
2. Yet, you have Pentecostal people, including traditional Pentecostals, who are
succumbing to doctrines of devils.
3. Doctrines of devils come from men, who say, Thus saith the Lord. Doctrines of
devils come through Christian radio, Christian television.
4. Doctrines of devils come from men whom the world considers to be great men of
God.
5. What is a doctrine of devils? How do I know when I am hearing the doctrine of a
devil?
6. Most doctrines of the devil come out of chapters and verses of the Bible, through the
mouths of the false prophets. Who use a portion of the written word taken out of
context.
7. Doctrines of devils are that which exalts the flesh without moving in holiness toward
God.
8. A doctrine of the devil is any doctrine, anything that a man of God might say is from
the Lord that excites the flesh, but the end result does not move me towards holiness,
love, dedication, sacrifice, and passion toward the Holy God.
9. A doctrine of the devil heads me to pursue the goals that lie in self-will.
10. Gods purpose in you is to conform you to the image of Christ. To do that He is
going to confront you with the wilderness of your heart.
11. You are going to be confronted with idolatry, with covetousness, with self-will that is
affected by what it sees on TV, reads in magazines and newspapers, and hears from
the so-called models of this society.
12. This self-will exalts itself against God. You are going to have to deal with that.
2Thes. 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our
gathering together unto him,
2Thes. 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word,
nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
2Thes. 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there
come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
2Thes. 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is
worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he
is God.
13. This man of sin is not the same that is referred to in verse 8. This man of sin in verse
3 is in small letters. God is going to reveal this man of sin to me that one, who
exalts himself to be above God, would bring Christ off the throne, would put himself
on the throne of my heart, and would continue, irregardless of revelation, of what I
know or heard from God, to allow my selfish pursuits to dominate my life, and to
continue to bring grief to the heart of God.
14. What is the warning? The warning is against stubbornness. Finally, the warning is
against idolatry brought on by doctrines of devils as it exalts the flesh. We set our
affections on them, and will not bow in submission and humility before the revealed
will of God.
15. The constitution of this work is a lie.
16. Men are trying to build the world on a false foundation. Its not allowed in the
church.
17. The Kingdom of God is built upon Jesus Christ, the truth.
18. We are influenced by all sorts of false considerations, influenced by what others will
think and say, especially those in our religious circles, people of our tradition. They
are false considerations and false influences.
19. One of the things we are going to find out under the Holy Spirits dealing with us is
that there is no truth in our minds naturally.
20. In us by nature there is no truth.
VI. Living By Truth. We Consider This Thought: We Are Living By Truth, But Theres
No Truth In Us By Nature.
1. Consequently, we discover that the only answer for deliverance and emancipation is,
it is not what I am, it is what He is. Christ abides by the same.
2. What is Truth? It is that which stands up to all arguments of Satan who is a liar.
2Thes. 2:5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
2Thes. 2:6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
2Thes. 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let,
until he be taken out of the way.
2Thes. 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the
spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
3. Truth, then, is that which delivers us from this false self which we are.
4. Man is not true in any part of his being.
5. Christ alone is truth, and you and I have to learn how to live in Christ, and until we
have done that, the Holy Spirit cannot do the other thing, that is to conform us to
Christ.
6. If we are going to live upon the false basis of ourselves the Holy Spirit leaves us
alone.
7. When we come to live by faith in Christ, then the Holy Spirit can make Christ good
in us.
8. Satan is always trying to get into the spirit through the body and soul and to capture
the stronghold of the spirit, and bring it into bondage.
9. We can remain free inwardly when we are feeling very bad outwardly. That is
freedom by Truth.
10. That is the truth! Not a thing, not an affirmation, but a Person. Jesus is the truth.
11. Abide in Christ and there is rest, there is peace, there is deliverance.
12. Many people think that the spiritual life is a matter of things. It is all a matter of a
person, the Lord Jesus.
13. The Holy Spirit will never save by an it. He will always bring us to Christ and
make Christ the basis of our life.
VII. The Abiding Need Of Faith.
1. The work of the Holy Spirit is to conform us to Christ. Jesus is Gods absolute
delight. So He is going to bring Christ out in us.
2. The thing that God is going to focus on is all the idolatry in our heart and life; that is,
everything that is not Christ. If there is anything in me that I would choose over
Christ, God will bring that to the surface.
3. We cant make any deals with God; God is not going to walk with this proud flesh.
John said, He must increase, but I must decrease (Jn. 3:30).
4. God is committed to you until Christ is formed in you. The flesh wars against that, it
doesnt want any part of that. The flesh wars against the Spirit, the Spirit against the
flesh, so that we cannot do the things that we ought to do.
5. The thing to do is to get into Christ with all of your heart. Walk in the twilight, in the
beginning of your experience with God, until the full light arises in your heart.
6. If you are going in the opposite direction God wants you to go, He will make you go
in a full circle until you are heading in the right direction. You cannot stay in the
twilight of your experience. We are people of faith. The just live by faith.
7. In the twilight of our knowledge of God, He is going to meet us and reveal to us the
covetousness of our hearts.
8. God is not going to make exception with you until you enter into the realities of the
cross of Jesus Christ and reckon that the flesh to be dead.
9. God is going to continue to confront you with this true self until that happens. God is
going to deal with the covetousness of your heart if He has to strip you down to
bankruptcy until your reputation doesnt matter.
10. God is only interested in Christ being formed in you, that you may walk worthy of
the Lord unto all pleasing.
11. Its an attitude that wants to please God and walks with Him that God honors.
Col. 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good
work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Col. 1:11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and
longsuffering with joyfulness;
Col. 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the
inheritance of the saints in light:
Col. 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the
kingdom of his dear Son:
Col. 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
Col. 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:
Col. 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible
and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all
things were created by him, and for him:
Col. 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Col. 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from
the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Col. 1:19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;
Col. 1:20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things
unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
Col. 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works,
yet now hath he reconciled
Col. 1:22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and
unreproveable in his sight:
12. Thats what is happening in your life today. If you call yourself by the name of
Christ, if you continue in the faith, it is the will of God to present you perfect in
Christ.
Col. 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the
hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature
which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
Col. 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the
afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his bodys sake, which is the church:
Col. 1:25 Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given
to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;
13. Paul was not only willing to suffer what he had to suffer, to be confronted with the
wickedness of his heart, and to walk unblamble before God, but he was willing to
suffer whatever he had to suffer for the afflictions of Christ to be made up for in the
body of Christ that lived on earth in his day.
14. That is the attitude and spirit that God wants to develop in all of us. That we will not
be just interested in our own spiritual maturity and satisfaction, our own growth in
Christ, but we will be so much like Christ that we will make up of the afflictions of
Christ in our generation.
15. Christ alone can save the world, but Christ cannot save the world alone. Only Christ
can save the world, but you and I the church (the members of the body of Christ) for
the bodys sake, must make up of the afflictions of Christ as we follow Him in the
refining process. The flesh hates to fulfill the Word of God.
Col. 1:26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is
made manifest to his saints:
Col. 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery
among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the Hope of glory:
Col. 1:28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we
may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
16. God loves you too much to make an exception of you. He wants to manifest and put
Christ on display in your set of circumstances.
1Cor. 10:6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things,
as they also lusted.
1Cor. 10:7 Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to
eat and drink, and rose up to play.
1Cor. 10:8 Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day
three and twenty thousand.
1Cor. 10:9 Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of
serpents.
1Cor. 10:10 Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the
destroyer.
17. Help us to hear then and fear and tremble before the Word of God.
18. If you put murmuring away in the House of God, you would have so much life
flowing it would effect the whole community. Just one thing neither murmur you.
19. Christ will always remain other than we are, so that there will never cease to be a call
for faith.
20. Faith is an abiding thing for the duration of this life.
21. Faith is the great factor of redemption, of salvation, of sanctification and of
glorification. Everything is through faith.
22. Faith undoes the work of the devil.
23. Faith means that we are put into the position where we cannot get it ourselves, we
only can obtain it in Another (Christ).
