FORMED ENDS FOR TANKS AND PRESSURE VESSELS
PART 1 BASED ON OUTSIDE DIAMETER
( Second Revision )
1. Sc ope - SpeciIies the proIile dimensions, and technical delivery conditions oI dished and Ilanged,
pressed or spun ends designed on the basis oI outside diameter commonly used as end closures oI
pressure vessels, receivers, tanks and similar equipments.
1.1 Where the ends have reinIorced or Ilanged-in manholes, it is recommended that they are made
to the same geometric shape as the plain ends.
2. Types and Ends The ends shall conIorm to one oI the Iollowing shapes.
2.1 Deep dished and Ilanged ends with an internal height oI dishing h approximately equal to one-
quarter oI the inside Ilange diameter d

Ior pressure vessels, either:
a) oI semi-ellipsoidal shape with the inner contour oI a true ellipse having an axis ratio oI 2 : 1
with outside diameter as given in Table 1, or
b) oI torispherical shape ( see Table 1 ).

3. Di mens i ons
3.1 Flange and Dishing Diameter The outside diameter, the crown radius and inside knuckle radius
shall conIorm to the requirements oI Tables 1 to 3.
3. 2 Thickness Minimum thickness is the thickness measured at the thinnest point aIter manuIacture
oI the dished ends.
Nominal thickness is the thickness oI the plate used in manuIacturing oI the dished end.
The minimum thickness shall be supplied by the purchaser based on internal/external pressure and
other design loading inclusive oI corrorion/erosion allowances according to IS : 2825-1969. For non-
pressure vessels and tanks, the minimum thickness shall be as agreed to between the manuIacturer and
the purchaser.
3. 3 Length of the Straight Flange The length oI the straight Ilange shall not be less than three times-
the end thickness with a minimum oI 38 mm, unless otherwise agreed to between the manuIacturer
and the purchaser.
3. 4 Tolerances The ends shall be true to shape within the Iollowing limits, unless more stringent
tolerances are speciIied by the purchaser.

in the straight portion oI the Ilange may increase and this shall not exceed 15 percent oI the nominal
thickness oI the plate. Thickness oI thinnest point oI dished end shall not be less than the minimum
thickness speciIied in the order.

4. Material The material oI construction shall be carbon steel low alloy steel alloy steel or non-
Ierrous metal. The exact speciIication shall be speciIied by the purchaser in his purchase order.
5. Technical Delivery Conditions The Iollowing details regarding technical delivery conditions
Ior dished ends shall be included.
5.1 Heat-Treated Condition The dished ends shall be delivered in the heat-treated condition depend-
ing upon the process oI dishing, temperature oI dishing and the material speciIication. Heat-treated
condition oI dished end is a subject oI agreement between the manuIacturer and the purchaser.
5.2 Workmanship Descaling shall be carried out to measure the dimensions and to carry out visual
inspection. Dished ends shall be Iree oI any injurious deIects.
5.2.1 Projection, depressions or elongated grooves usually developed during dishing are permissible
so long as these depressions are not sharp and their depth is within the tolerance limits speciIied on
the plate. Sharp grooves, laminations and other surIace cracks shall be completely removed by
grinding or any other suitable method.
5.2.2 Where depressions exceed the tolerance limits, speciIied on the plate, such depressions shall be
removed by grinding or by welding by an approved welding procedure with the permission oI the
purchaser. Hammering oI surIace deIects is not permitted.
5.2.3 The heat-treatment and radiography requirements shall be according to IS : 2825-1969.

5.3 Testing of Dished Ends for Material Qualitv To ensure t hat t he material properties are not
impaired during t he manuIact ure oI t he di shed ends, sampl es t aken Irom di shed ends aIter t he Iinal heat -
t reat ment shall be subj ect ed to mechani cal t est Ior tensile strength, impact, wher e necessary (Ior low
t emperat ure appl i cat i ons) , and bend t est s as speciIied in t he relevant speciIication Ior t he plate material.
The location oI t est pl at es shall be subj ect to agreement bet ween t he manuIacturer and t he ; urchaser,
and may be one oI t he Iollowing:
a) Extended port i ons cut out Irom t he straight Ilange,
b) Openi ngs cut - out Ior nozzles, and
c) Separat e t est pl at es Irom t he same melt and heat number subj ect ed to simulation similar to
t he di shed ends.
6. Marki ng The di shed ends shall be marked with t he Iollowing:
a) Out si de di amet er,
b) Type oI di shed end,
c) Minimum t hi ckness,
d) Material oI const ruct i on, and
e) Brand/ t rade name oI manuIacturer.
6.1 Standard Marking Details available with t he Bureau oI Indian St andards.
E X P L A N A T O R Y N O T E
Formed ends are used as end cl osures Ior pressure vessel s, receivers and similar equi pment s.
IS : 2825- 1969 speciIies any one oI t he Iollowing shapes Ior t he ends:
a) Hemispherical,
b) Semi-ellipsoidal,
c) Dished and Ilanged, and
d) Conical.
In this speciIication, only semi-ellipsoidal , and di shed and Ilanged ends are covered. The code
Ior unIired pressure vessel s ( IS : 2825- 1969 ) also permits deeper or alightly shal l ower semi ellipsoidal
ends, and di shed and Ilanged ends deeper t han t hose speciIied in this st andard. But t hese shapes are
consi dered ' speci al ' and have n o t thereIore, been i ncl uded.
This st andard, Iirst published in 1968, was revised in 1971 to reduce t he number oI varieties oI
di shed ends.
Si nce t he Iormed ends are desi gnat ed either on out si de diameter basis or inside di amet er basi s,
t he st andard has been revised again and made in 2 parts. The Part 1 oI this st andard covers Iormed
ends on out si de di amet er basis, while Part 2 covers t hat as inside di amet er basi s.
A material cl ause, and heat -t reat ment and radi ography requi rement have been i ncl uded in t he
revision.
The inIormation to be suppl i ed by t he purchaser with enquiry or order is given in Appendi x A.

A P P E N D I X A
( Explanatory Not e )
The purchaser shall supply the Iollowing inIormation to the manuIacturer with the enquiry or
order:
1) Type oI end required;
2) Outside diameter oI the dished ends;
3) Material oI construction oI the dished end,
4) Method oI heat treatment;
5) Minimum and nominal thickness oI the dished end;
6) Radiography and any other non-destructive testing, iI required;
7) Length oI straight Ilange;
8) Whether the Ilange is to be machined and welded portions required;
9) Special requirements Ior the welded joints in an end made Irom more than one plate;
10) Any inspection or survey requirements; and
11) Man-hole or any connection details, iI required.
