T could easily be termed a Labour Budget,

but the one delivered by Finance Minister
Bill English last week was, of course, an
election year sweetener.
The big surprise of this years Budget is a
crowd pleaser for families, and will also be
welcomed by schools and health workers yes,
free GP visits for children will be extended up
to age 13 with a $90 million boost.
More than 400,000 more children
nationwide, all primary school-aged children
can go to a doctor for free, any time of the day,
as well as being entitled to free prescriptions.
The changes, which will be offered through
general practices from July 1, 2015.
Despite the pressures to cut spending to
achieve a surplus, English has found enough
cash to pay for a $500 million package for
extending paid parental leave, and free doctors
visits and prescriptions for under-13s, as well
as boosting the parental tax credit.
English has done so in in large part by
postponing start-up dates for these programmes
until next year.
Apart from answering critics who claim
National doesnt care about child poverty, these
schemes, which come straight out of the centrelefts textbook, are Nationals way of paying a
dividend to middle New Zealand for sticking

by Key and his colleagues. It is another raid by

Key into Labour territory.
Its a confident Budget for a confident
country, English declared last week.
Were in an enviable position compared
with many others in the developed world.
Our economy is growing steadily and creating
more jobs. Average wages are rising faster
than inflation. Thats happening now and
Budget forecasts show it continuing, with
170,000 more people in work by mid-2018 and
unemployment projected to fall to 4.4 per cent.
This budget shows that National is
responsibly managing the Governments
finances, English said.
Well record a small surplus next year and
larger surpluses in the coming years, which will
allow us some extra spending, but not so much
that it pushes interest rates higher than they
otherwise would be.
Responsible management over the last five
years has allowed for some new spending this
year, and our first priority is families. Weve
put children and families at the heart of our new
spending. We will:
Make GP visits and prescriptions free for
children under 13,
Extend paid parental leave from 14 to 18
weeks, and expand eligibility,

crowd pleaser
Increase the parental tax credit from $150 to
$220 a week, and extend the payment period
from 8 to 10 weeks, Invest $156 million over
four years to help early childhood centres
remain accessible and affordable,
Spend $33 million on a package of measures
to help the most vulnerable children.
English said lifting the quality of teaching
was another priority.
Itll help children now, and help New
Zealands performance in the longer term.
Were working on making houses more
affordable. Thats not going to happen
overnight. There are lots of things we need to
do, and that councils need to do, and were
making it happen.
New Zealanders have shown considerable
resilience since the domestic recession that
Labour left us with, which was followed by
the global financial crisis and the Canterbury
earthquakes.
Assuming we stick to our economic plan,
weve set out a timeline for reducing debt, and
resuming contributions to the New Zealand
Superannuation Fund, English said.
Im pleased to have delivered a Budget
that looks ahead, for a country thats going

It will be better under Labour: Cunliffe

have been delayed to support this years surplus.
New Zealand Transport Agency - an
unprecedented $375m interest free loan, instead
of capital expenditure. Even Treasury found
this odd (and is coincidentally almost exactly
the same size as the projected surplus).
The next Labour government the
government I lead will be a government that
puts people first, Cunliffe said.
This is a Fudge-it Budget. A Budget of
low expectations, easy cynicism, and cosmetic
change.
Gone are Mr Keys days of apparently
being ambitious for New Zealand. Because
the rock star recovery is for someone else, not
for you.
Gone are the days of a brighter future. Now
John Key spends his time talking New Zealand
down.
He says reducing unemployment to 4% is a
dream. He says theres nothing to be done.
Ambition, belief in New Zealanders, has
given way to easy cynicism and snide remarks,
Cunliffe said.
Its politics as usual.
Labour will build a nation in which
everyone has a good secure job, in which
owning a home is not a fading dream, in which
we can raise our children in our own country,
and reasonably hope that our grandchildren can
too and we can grow old with them.
Labour trusts Kiwis to build this nation
together, and we know that with a government
that backs them we can do this together.

Arvind Kumar

ABOUR leader David Cunliffe calls it a

Fudge-It Budget.
What weve seen is a budget that does very
little for New Zealanders struggling to pay their
bills, find a job, own their own home, or raise
a family. A budget that focuses on politics as
usual, not growing a better New Zealand.
It will be better under Labour. I want a New
Zealand where people matter most and every
Kiwi has the opportunities they need to do their
best.
Cunliffe said Labour would make housing
affordable by:
Building 100,000 new affordable
homes,
Restricting offshore speculators,
Lowering interest rates by reforming
our monetary policy.
He said labour would create better jobs with
higher wages through:
Upgrading our monetary policy to
stabilise the dollar and make our
businesses more competitive,
A capital gains tax and R&D tax
credits to encourage investment and
innovation, not speculation,
Fairer employment laws and a boost to
wages.
And well give Kiwi kids the best start in
life with:

26 weeks paid parental leave

25 hours a week of free Early Childhood
Education
A $60 per week child allowance
My vision is for a New Zealand in which
we work together to make sure people come
first.
First, that the much-hyped fiscal surplus
isnt worth the wafers its written on. Smoke
and Mirrors.
This is a Fudge-it Budget.
Second, this Government continues to
favour the few at the expense of the many.
This is not a Budget, its the Cabinet
Club Annual Report. Theres even $1m for an
Oravida stage show!

And it will take a few more things than preelection cosmetics to fix that, Cunliffe said.
Third, we want New Zealand to be the
fairest, most decent society in the world and
that will take serious, long-term change that
will create genuine opportunity, reduce poverty
and lift all our people up: in their work, in their
homes, in the families.
Cunliffe vsaid National had asset stripped
Housing New Zealand, taking out $90 million
in dividends, stripping up to 70% of Housing
New Zealand homes in our regions, and
underfunding Christchurch housing.
Earthquake rebuild funding is cut by $567
million, below last years infrastructure budget.
ACC at least $120 million of levy cuts

New Zealand economy in indisputably

tidy shape : INZBC

on Bill Englishs message that the

government has managed to guide the
country through global financial and major
local natural disasters in the last six years and
the economy is in tidy shape at the end of that
period needs to be applauded.
While the Family Budget
did not come as a surprise to
many, economic growth is
forecast to peak at a robust
4 percent in the year to June
2014,
unemployment
is
forecast to fall to 4.4 percent
by 2018 with very high rates
of labour force participation by international
standards, inflation remains under control, and
government debt falls below 20 percent by the
end of the decade.
Comparing the budget with other developed

world economies, and particularly our

neighbours Australia, this budget shows the
New Zealand economy in indisputably tidy
shape. This may be one of the reasons why the
net immigration flow is very high by historic
standards where by
more Kiwis are staying
aground rather than
moving
across
the
ditch to not so greener
pastures now. This may
be the reason why the
government has focused
on the domestic growth.
The strong Kiwi dollar has certainly not
helped the exporters, it is also fair to say that
this is the reason for the export receipts which
are in negative in the budget forecast and a
minimal surplus has also not helped the cause.

It will be better under Labour.

10 things to know about

Budget 2014 Top Winners Budget 2014

&
Loosers

- Bernard Hickey, courtsey: Auckland Chamber of Commerce

Economic commentator Bernard Hickey
points Auckland business owners to five
leading indicators to watch this year.
1. HERE COME THE SURPLUSES The
Government expects to post a NZ$372
million OBEGAL (Operating Balance
Excluding Gains and Losses) surplus in the
year to June 30. Thats up from a deficit
of NZ$2.447 billion in the year almost
finished and better than the NZ$100 million
forecast in December. Treasury forecasts
the surpluses will rise to NZ$3.485 billion
by 2017/18 or 1.3% of GDP.
2. A SMALL LOLLY SCRAMBLE The
Government stuck with its new net
spending allowance of NZ$1 billion for
the 2014/15 year, but has increased it by
NZ$500 million over the next three years
to help pay for a few (small) goodies for
families, home builders and for Defence.
3.
ITS A (SLIGHT) LOOSENING
Treasurys fiscal impulse figures show a
contraction forecast in December for the
2014/15 year has turned around to a slight
stimulus of 0.1%. That may put a smidgen
of extra pressure on interest rates this year
or next year, but Bill English thinks the
Government has the balance right. Over
the full four years of the Budget outlook

Courtesy: PwC Auckland

Treasury is forecasting the Government

will withdraw 0.6% of stimulus each
year on average over the latter part of
the forecast period. Thats down from
an average contraction of 0.7% in the
Treasurys December forecast.
4. TALKING TAX CUTS Tax cuts are not
forecast in the budget, but Bill English
started talking about the potential for tax
cuts, echoing teasing comments yesterday
by Prime Minister John Key about the
potential to use some of those discretionary
spending pots of NZ$1.5 billion a year in
2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 to fund
some sort of tax cut, albeit it relatively
small given the size of those fiscal
envelopes.
5. A FEW BUILDERS OFFCUTS The
Government is working to improve
housing supply, particularly in Auckland.
It unveiled a plan to temporarily remove
tariffs on building materials, which it
said would reduce the cost of building
a standard home by NZ$3,500. It also
announced NZ$64.3 million of new
operating funding and NZ$16.4 million
of new capital funding for social housing
needs assessment for the Ministry of Social
Development. There would also be a

Fund.
6. SOME LOLLIES FOR YOUNG KIDS
The Government announced a NZ$500
million package that includes a four week
extension to Paid Parental Leave, an
increase in the parental tax credit by NZ$70
a week and by two weeks to 10 weeks,
and extra funding for Early Childcare
Education.
7. MIGRATION IS AN ISSUE One scenario
painted by Treasury in its fiscal risks section
was for a rise in net migration to 41,500 per
year, which it said would put extra pressure
on prices, house prices and interest rates.
8. 4% GROWTH Treasury forecast GDP
growth of 4% in the year to March 2015,
up from 3% in the year to March just
completed. It expects real private spending
growth of 7% in the year ahead as high
net migration, record high terms of trade,
insurance payouts and strong asset prices
fuel a relative spree.
9. THERES A LIMIT Bill English said
Treasury had advised him the most new
spending any government could manage in
a year without pushing up interest rates was
NZ$1.5 billion. That sets the parameter for
the political debate about lolly scrambles vs
higher interest rates.
10. MONEY FOR AUCKLAND - The Budget
included a NZ$375 million loan to NZTA
to kick start NZ$815 million of Auckland
Transport projects to reduce congestion.
This was a factor NZIER pointed to in an
analysis about expensive housing.

Politcal Reactions
A responsible Budget to support New Zealanders
Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi

ational is supporting jobs, higher wages,

and helping New Zealanders and families
get ahead things that really matter to us all.
Next Thursday, Finance Minister Bill English
will present his sixth Budget. It will continue
the good work this Government has been doing
since New Zealanders elected us in 2008 to
responsibly manage the economy and support
families to get ahead here in New Zealand.
The Budget will set out the next steps in the

Governments programme to build on the good

economic momentum weve seen over the past
year or so. It will show growing surpluses over
the next four years, starting with a small surplus
in 2014/15. And it will be about thoughtful,
targeted spending not a spend-up.
So together with households and businesses,
the Government is rebuilding the economys
capacity to deliver more jobs and higher incomes
over the next decade.
Were seeing good results.
Employment is rising across the board.
84,000 more jobs were added to the economy in
the past year the largest increase in nearly a

decade.
Average ordinary time hourly earnings rose
2.5 per cent in the past year, well ahead of the
cost of living, that went up 1.5 per cent.
If we keep on track, around 170,000 more
people are forecast to be in work by mid2018, and the average full-time wage by then
is expected to be almost $62,300 up $7,600
from its current level. Unemployment will also
continue to fall.
Productivity is growing and consumer and
business confidence is high. Looking ahead, the
Budget will forecast annual economic growth of
between 2 per cent and 4 per cent a year out to

2018.
Interest rates at around 6 per cent are near 50year lows, and well below the almost 11 per cent
under the previous government.
Well keep a rein on government spending by
sticking to a $1 billion Budget allowance for the
2014/15 financial year, but prioritising spending
on health, education and helping families to get
ahead. This is the responsible thing to do and
will help restrict interest rate increases.
Im looking forward to the Budget, when
the John Key-led Government will outline our
next steps to help New Zealanders get ahead and
protect hard-won gains.

Quake families suffer under creative accounting

Winston Peters

inance Minister Bill English has done a

juggling act to create an artificial surplus
in Budget 2014 at the expense of all New
Zealanders, but especially Christchurch quake
victims, says New Zealand First.
And what of forgotten Christchurch, asks
New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters.
What sort of Government holds back
money from the Christchurch?
You dont have to tell the people of
Christchurch facing another terrible winter they know that they are being sacrificed so the
Government can boast about its books.
Tell the Christchurch people whose homes
are flooded every time it rains that the fiddled
books are more important than their lives.
Holding back on the vitally needed money
to rebuild Christchurch to generate the socalled surplus amounts to a crime against our
own people.
The facts are clear the Government has
jacked up the numbers from an insurance deal
when AMI was taken over.
The money was transferred into
Government Bonds.

The interest on the bonds is a match for the

surplus.
So behold the books balance!
Let these economic gurus from the National
Cronies Club go and tell the people in broken
homes, begging for relief, what is happening to
their relief, says Mr Peters.
Cake for Cronies, Kiwis Get Crumbs
Budget 2014 completely ignores the
elephants in the room immigration, housing,
jobs and exports, says New Zealand First
Leader, Rt Hon Winston Peters.
The problems are:
Renewed pressure on housing through
exploding immigration.
Failure to maintain payments into the New
Zealand Superannuation Fund (and there wont
be under this Government for another five more
years).
Nothing to stop soaring power prices.
Nothing to stop the seriously over-inflated
dollar.
Not a single idea for generating one new
job .
No transport plan.
No infrastructure plan for the whole
country, only Auckland gets a mention and then
not the rail loop.
We welcome extra spending on the families

package - $500 million over four years, but

additional spending will be mopped up by all
the new arrivals - migrants from overseas and
Kiwis returning from Australia.
As for extending doctors visits for
children under 13, well, they have been reading
New Zealand First policy, and followed in our
footsteps. We got free doctors visits for under
sixes and thats good.
All and all it is a complacent Budget which
leaves out the mass majority of New Zealanders
hopes for a better tomorrow.
The cronies got the cake in this Budget.
Kiwis got the crumbs.
And nothing is done about the huge
pressures from foreign speculation on the
purchase of homes and land in New Zealand,
says Mr Peters.
No Hope for Education in Budget
The Government has offered little inspiration
for education in the budget, says New Zealand
First.
Education spokesperson Tracey Martin says
while Finance Minister Bill Englishs budget
speech attempts to spin education spending as
a plus there is a noticeable lack of funding to
attack the Global Education Reform Movement
(GERM).

The education spending merely continues

to entrench the top-down, low trust model
of education which is smothering our world
leading education system and tying up our
teachers in paperwork.
The Government has continued to focus
on tertiary education solely for specific
employment outcomes rather than education as
a public good.
New Zealand First is concerned that
this Government is focused on turning out
employees by rote instead of the holistic
entrepreneurs this nation needs for the future.
It is kidding itself into thinking that a
long-awaited increase in operational grant
funding for primary and secondary schools,
the only truly new announcement, will distract
school leaders and teachers from the very real
challenges they continue to face.
While I applaud the increase in funding in
ECE it must focus on strengthening our public
providers and not just pump taxpayers dollars
into privately run childcare centres.
However this Budget has massive gaps
in adult and community education, student
support and special education.
Once again this Government has shown
that it just doesnt understand education, says
Ms Martin.

The century of women

From the desk of I am Woman

How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a
weary world. William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice.

ven a tiny lamp can light up a room that

has been in dark for thousands of years.
Every woman who has ever stood up for any
of her rights has been that lamp For decades
we have focussed on the poor state of women
in our societies. Around the world, there
seems to be an ongoing struggle for women to
maintain their existence. We have spoken out
to gain suffrage, equal wages, time off from
jobs to deliver babies, stood up and fought
against the atrocities, violence, inequality and
discrimination.
While this is the truth about the state of
women in todays world; yet, a dichotomous
fact is also that todays women are breaking
every frontier of the universe. They are
doctors, scientists, leaders, astronauts, thinkers,
philosophers, artists, teachers, soldiers and
have caused their presence in every possible
avenue of society. Women today walk shoulder
to shoulder with the men and are holding up
their half of the sky. While they go about their
unending responsibilities of being mothers,
wives, sisters, daughters and friends; standing
as boulders of strength and comfort for
others, they are exploring new horizons of
accomplishments in their own lives.
However, fact remains that women
intrinsically and naturally put others before the
self, in time, we ourselves begin to put our own
selves on the back burners of priorities. In a
while, we get so used to not treating ourselves
as important that we fall off that priority list
altogether.
That marginalization that is either selfimposed or via the society; calls for the birth of
an initiative that reminds every single woman of
her own inner uniqueness, her highest potential,
her innate power that she may discover it, tap
into it and grow and develop from it.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only
light can do that.
Martin Luther King Jr., A Testament of
Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches
I am Woman is that tiny lamp that wishes
to light up the life of every woman with the
songs that celebrate that spirit of womanhood,

the feminine power that has emerged in spite

of the inequality, despite the discrimination,
notwithstanding the injustice and regardless of
the subjugation. That resilient light that shines,
no matter what obstructs its path, that lights
up even the tiniest corners that have remained
in the dark since centuries. It is a movement
to honour her primordial strength and her
substance. Dedicated to honour every womans
journey, every womans story, every womans
struggle and triumph. An achievement that
might not have yet been identified by even her
own self
I am Woman has been conceived by
everyday women, who live everyday lives, who

strive to conquest over the everyday struggles

but are passionate about honouring the inner
self and dignity. We recognise the beauty, the
strength and the potential in ourselves and every
single woman around us. We are dedicated to
celebrate and honour our journey and also that
of all women around us.
Today there is a large number of initiatives
and agencies dedicated to work with the
destitute, battered, at risk or struggling women.
There are also a fair number of initiatives
targeted at the women in boardrooms. In
all these however, the average everyday
woman who goes about her daily business,
in her personal or professional life gets easily
overlooked.
It is a fact that women love to learn and be
inspired by one another. They love to share

their own stories so they may inspire others to

grow. What better than to create an oasis where
likeminded women could gather, share, learn,
develop, nourish and enrich one another and
in doing so, themselves? A community where
women can take out a moment for themselves
from their busy schedules, pay tribute to and
cherish their own inner goddess that awaits
expression. And then having been enriched
by the experience go forth and be the best of
who they are the best mothers, wives, lovers,
sisters, friends, professionals, diplomats.best
of whoever they are and where ever they might
be.
So having been conceptualised in New
Zealand, the concept
travelled to Europe
where at a Womens
Empowerment
Conference
in
Florence, Italy, it
was shared with
likeminded women.
The
encouraging
reception at Florence
and the joint intention
of the feminine power
found the concept
travelling to the
United States where
the foundation of
the New York Chapter was laid. The team at
I am Woman is extremely excited at the warm
and encouraging response it has received from
some outstanding women in the community
in New Zealand. Transcending the barriers of
colour, culture and creed, we are working to
bring forward the philosophy and purpose of I
am Woman, to bring every single woman to the
fore, from where she grows.
One of the great thinkers and philosophers
of our time Dr Daisaku Ikeda said - The Earth
gives people life; nations take it from them.
The Earth nourishes life; nations throw it away.
If nations are the products of men squabbling
for territory and influence, then the Earth is
the realm of mothers. This realm of mothers,
who love life, is far greater and grander than

the nation-states created by men. The twentyfirst century will be the century of life. It will be
the century of women. (Dr Daisaku Ikeda, SGI
Newsletter, Aug-Sept, 1998, p. 106)
Speaking at the 39th Annual Commencement
LaGuardia Community College Michelle
Bachelet, the head of UN Women said - The
21st century will be the century of girls and
women. And I am not just saying this to you
as the head of UN Women. Secretary of State
Clinton echoed this belief in a very important
speech she gave in San Francisco less than a
week ago. It is true that today girls in many
countries are not given the opportunity to
attend school. It is true that today less than
one in five legislators are women. It is true
that today only 20 of 193 nations are headed
by a woman President or Prime Minister. And
it is true that everyday, 1000 women die from
complications of pregnancy and childbirth for
lack of medical care.
Yet, the tide is turning. So maybe theres
only 20 women Heads of State now but thats a
lot more than just a few years ago. Just two days
ago, I witnessed Dilma Rousseff, the President
of Brazil, opening the United Nations General
Assembly. She was the first woman to do so
since the creation of the organization in 1945.
This was a moment that I will never forget.
And, all over the world, there is increasing
understanding of the need to unleash the
untapped potential of girls and women.
As we begin this journey here in New
Zealand, we call forth all who care to join us in
celebrating this awesome spirit of the feminine.
This celebration of womanhood. As we await
to spread our wings and claim our skies we
invite you all to become our strength and in
turn be strengthened. If you have an inspiring
journey that you want to share it with us, we
would love to hear from you. If at first you do
not wish to share your song, just come along

GFS expertise gets customer a surprise claim of $25,000

hen Mr. Narendra Patel, a Global

Financial Services (GFS) customer for
many years, walked in for a mortgage review,
little did he know that a week later he would
walk out with $25,000 in his bank. Not as a
loan, but for a Trauma insurance claim for an
ailment he had a more than a year ago and did
not even realize that it was covered!
Global Financial Services, run by Mr. Ajay
Kumar has always considered Customer is
God, and true to his motto, not only serves
them best, but also makes his clients aware.
Most of the clients who come to us, dont
even know what is written in their policy,
or what advantages can they get, says Ajay
Kumar. We therefore always encourage our
clients to re-visit their policies annually and
review them.
Given GFS expertise and good standing
with insurance companies, the application met
all the complicated criteria laid out by insurance
companies.
In this instance also Narendra had come for
a general review. When their advisors came to
know that he had gone through a stint procedure
for his heart 18 months back, they informed him
of the claim valid under his policy.
The prudence and alertness of the GFS team,
helped Narendra to get all his papers sorted and
the claim was processed without hassles, within
a week! GFS has maintained very professional
ties with all Insurance companies and that helps
them to get the claims for their clients in a very
fast turn-around time.
Obviously Narendra was so happy that he

personally came to GFS office to give a bouquet

of flowers to Ajay Kumar and thank him for his
guidance.
Me and my family are very grateful to Ajay
Kumar for his timely advice, without which this
was not possible, says Narendra Patel.
His family understood how the premiums
they had paid now rewarded them when they

really needed
financial
support.
It
also provides
them comfort
that if and
when
any
such situation or ailment confronted them in
the future, their insurance covers them at least
financially. and there is someone here in New
Zealand who is eager to help them!
Ajay Kumar says that making Insurance
hassle free is their USP for the clients. We are
there for our customers, when they need us the
most, that assurance can be with them forever.

This year too, GFS won the Top Insurance

Adviser Award for 2013 from AIA Insurance
one of Asias largest insurance companies.
Before that GFS has won Top Insurance Advisor
Award from AIA during 2010, 2011 & 2012.

PM hopeful of FTA with Modi govt

EW Zealand Prime Minister John Key is

hopeful the election of Narendra Modi as
Indias new Prime Minister will rejuvenate free
trade talks with India.
Modis Bharatiya Janata Party was elected in
a landslide election victory over the weekend,
bringing an end to the 10-year reign of former
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Congress
Party.
The right
wing Modi had
campaigned
on economic
revival
and
g r o w t h
for
India,
including
promoting
m o r e
international
trade
and
investment in
India which he
had criticised
the Congress
Party
for
dragging its heels over.
Mr Key told the New Zealand Herald the
chances of reaching an agreement in the near
future were getting better I think.
We are sort of hopeful we can reignite the
free trade agreement with Modi as the new
Prime Minister. He has obviously been very
pro-business and he has had an overwhelming
mandate delivered to him so you can see the
Indian people want and expect to see high levels
of economic growth.
One of those things is trade, so we are
certainly going to be taking it up with the new

Second Maori Indian Hui announced

Indian Government at the appropriate time.

Ravi Thapar, Indias High Commissioner
to New Zealand, in a speech to attendees at the
recent Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame function, also
raised the issue of FTA between the two countries.
The FTA will definitely happen, but it is a
matter of tweaking it a bit for the mutual benefit
of both countries, Mr Thapar told the gathering
of more than 200 VIPs and dignitaries, including
Mr Key.
N e w
Zealand
began free
trade talks
with India
in 2010 and
there were
originally
hopes
to
reach
an
agreement
by 2012.
Talks
have stalled
since then
- the last
round of talks were in July last year. Signing off
on an agreement would help address concern
New Zealand was becoming too dependent on
China in its trade relations.
Fonterra has previously said India had
potential to be as large as market as China.
Current two-way trade with India is at $1.1
billion and a free trade agreement was expected
to more than double that to $3 billion by 2015.
New Zealands new target of trade with China is
to reach $30 billion by 2020.

Journalism educator blasts NZ media

Arvind Kumar

he Asia-Pacific region is poorly reported

and under reported in the New Zealand
media and has been for years, says a leading
journalism academic.
Professor David Robie, director the Pacific
Media Centre at the AUT University, said the
mainstream and legacy media was patchy at
best in the coverage of the region.
The poor level of reporting means that we
are frequently misinformed or we get a onedimensional view of developments, which is
barely half the story.
Prof, a media educator in the Pacific region
for many years, was speaking at the recent
launch of his latest book Dont Spoil My
Beautiful Face. In the book, Prof Robie, an
independent journalist, media campaigner and
educator from AUT University, distills his
lessons from 35 years of working in the AsiaPacific region.
Covering environmental challenges, coups,
the nuclear-free and independent Pacific
movement and civil rights, as well as the many
barriers journalists face, Dont Spoil My
Beautiful Face reveals many of the hidden
stories from the island nations.
Critical development journalism is a
robust form of journalism investigating
political and social process and policy. It is still
speaking truth to power, but as well as seeking
accountability it tries to find a constructive
edge leading to solutions.
The Asia-Pacific region is poorly reported
and under reported in the New Zealand media
and has been for years, Prof Robie said.
Only one institution consistently covers
itself with credit when covering the region
and that is Radio New Zealand International.
Although Maori Televisions current affairs
programme Native Affairs has also done some
excellent Pacific work, he said.
Spasifik magazine and TVNZs Tagata
Pasifika programme also do first first class
work.
Although RNZI only has a fraction of the
resources of its cousin across the Tasman,
Radio Australia plus ABC Television, it does
an excellent and creditable job.
But with the honourable exceptions of
individual journalists such as TVNZs Barbara
Dreaver and Fairfax Medias Michael Field
both banned by the Bainimarama regime in Fiji
the mainstream and legacy media is patchy at
best in the coverage of the region, Prof Robie
said.

Professor David Robie

The poor level of reporting means that we
are frequently misinformed or we get a onedimensional view of developments, which is
barely half the story.
Our treatment of Fiji is an example of this.
The hypocrisy and double standards over the
reporting of radical changes in post-coup Fiji
have not only blinded us about the realities but
also prevented us seeing other critical issues
around the region.
In many respects, the illegal Bainimarama
regime has been a paraiah ever since the
military coup in 2006.
Prof Robie said it should not be forgotten
that the so-called democracy that was
overthrown was actually an extremist and
corrupt ethno-nationalist regime masquerading
as democratic.
Also, the reality is that this same military
backed regime is likely to become the
elected government in the general election in
September, he said.
Orchestrated and manipulated, perhaps.
But the regime does have a lot of genuine
support in rural areas and it least it opens the
door to a return to real democracy.
For the doomsayers there is very little
difference from when the original coup leader

Sitiveni Rabuka made the transition from

hardline military dictator to elected prime
minister in 1992.
Paranoia reigns when the regimes
bureaucrats deal with the media and there is a
climate of timid self-censorship in Fiji under
the control of the dictatorial Media Industry
Development Tribunal except for a handful
of courageous and dissident journalists such as
Ricardo Morris and his Republika magazine.
Actually Fiji is not the biggest worry in the
region by a long shot, Prof Robie said.
Indonesian repression in the two
Melanesian provinces that make up the West
Papua region and the climate of impunity in the
Philippines where journalists are assassinated
with ease are serious crises in the region.
But when do you read about these issues in
the New Zealand media?
At least 206 journalists have been murdered
in the Philippines since 198634 of them in
the Ampatuan massacre in Mindanao in 2009.
More than four years later nobody has been
convicted for these atrocities.
He said the Philippines was a far more
dangerous place for the media under democracy
than it was under the Marcos military
dictatorship.
And now a controversial law in the
Philippines billed by critics as an electronic

13

martial law that criminalises e-libel may be

mimicked in the Pacific.
Now in Papua New Guinea the Peter
ONeill government has signaled an impending
onslaught against stridently critical social
media with a draft new cyber-crime law.
The proposed PNG legislation mirrors in
some respects the Cybercrime Prevention Act
in the Philippines where an offender can be
imprisoned for up to 12 years without parole
and the law is regarded by critics as a violation
of Article 19 of the International Covenant
on Civil and Political Rights. Truth is not
recognised as a defence.
Last month in Thailand, the indictment of
two journalists, Alan Morison and Chutima
Sidasathian, for alleged criminal libel under a
similar Computer Crime Act may spell doom
for the online news website Phuket Wan.
West Papua is the most critical front line
for defending media freedom in the South
Pacific at present. The West Papua Freedom
Flotilla last September focused unprecedented
global attention on human rights and freedom
of expression in the Indonesian-ruled region.
Vanuatu Prime Minister Moana Carcasses
Kalosil challenged the United Nations Human
Rights Council last month to act decisively
to end the international neglect of the West
Papuan people.
In this climate of fear and repression of
political dissent, and blatant negligence by the
international community including the UN and
the powerful developed countries since 1969,
we find this forgotten race still dare to dream
for equality and justice. Yet the democratic
nations have kept silent.
New Zealand is among these silent nations
and nowhere was this landmark speech
reported in the New Zealand media, Prof
Robie said.
More than 3000 asylum seekers are living
in detention camps in Nauru and Papua New
Guinea deprived of their human rights and with
no hope for the future.
Through the so-called Pacific Solution,
Australia has simply attempted to dump
responsibility on two nations for a price, he
said.
Journalism must fundamentally change in
the Pacific to cope with the challenges.
Far more investigative journalism is
needed, or as I would say more critical
development journalism, Prof Robie said.
More education and training is needed and
not just the sort of self-interested short-term
training served up by donor agencies.

continue to rise strongly, while
unemployment remains at 6.0 percent, Statistics
New Zealand said today.
Were seeing more people in the labour
market, with the participation rate surpassing
the previous high in late 2008 before the

The labour force participation and
employment rates both increased 0.4 percentage
points over the quarter. Employment continues
to rise, with growth seen across a number of

Campaigner slams myth

of jobs provided by foreign
companies in NZ

nly one out of five New Zealanders work

for foreign companies and, as foreign
ownership increases, the number of jobs
decreases for locals, says campaigner Murray
Horton.

CAFCAs Murray Horton challenges the official

definition of a foreign company as portrayed by
the Key government. Image: Del Abcede/PMC
Horton, national organiser of the
Christchurch-based Campaign Against Foreign
Control of Aotearoa (CAFCA), told a public
seminar at AUT University on Friday the
government planned to ram through the
controversial draft Trans-Pacific Partnership
Agreement (TPPA) this year with a huge impact
on the New Zealand economy.
He described the provision of jobs by
foreign companies in New Zealand as a myth.
He said the agreement would be of significant
benefit to the United States and much less to the
New Zealand taxpayer.
Horton said that since deregulation in the
1980s, trans-national corporations had had near

free rein in New Zealand to the detriment of

the taxpayer.
A foreign company, as legally defined in
1993 by the Overseas Investment Act, is one
that has more than 24.9 percent ownership,
said Horton.
He told the audience at the Pacific Media
Centre-organised seminar they would be
surprised how many politicians were not aware
of this figure.
PM adamant
He believes Prime Minister John Key is
aware, but remains adamant in telling New
Zealanders that keeping 51 percent of state
assets means maintaining ownership.
Horton demonstrated with official statistics
how foreign ownership had increased under a
National-led government.
According to statement by Stonefish
Communications on behalf of the New
Zealand Nurses Organisation and New Zealand
Climate and Health Council, 270 healthcare
professionals have signed an open letter to
the Prime Minister warning of a threat to New
Zealanders health under the TPPA.
Associate professor Papaarangi Reid, head
of the Te Kupenga Hauora Mori unit at the
University of Auckland, said the governments
negotiations over the TPPA undermined New
Zealanders.
Under the TPPA, passing laws to ban
or control harmful substances that limit the
profits of foreign investors means New Zealand
taxpayers risk being sued for millions, she
said.

uckland International Airport, the nations

tapping into Asias growing travel market.
The ambitious target will see annual growth

Auckland Airport
is trying to do is

manager of TravConsult who emceed the
conference told BusinessDesk. What Auckland
Airport has realized is they cant just passively
wait for everyone else to do the work to get the
tourists here.
The airport is targeting the growing Asian
middle class, especially Chinese tourists and
yesterday announced an increase in daily direct

flights to Guangzhou by China Southern Airlines

from 10 to 14 per week in the summer high
season. The airline started flying three times a
week to Auckland in April 2011.
The increase, using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner,
is estimated to add 40,000 seats and $43 million
to the New Zealand industry. The route first
launched three years ago at three flights a week.

Australia will remain the dominant source
of visitors because of its proximity and relative

market share will drop to 38 percent from its
current 45 percent as Asian visitors grow.

Fears over expulsion of two Indian journalists

PAKISTAN: The expulsion of two Indian journalists might lead to the destabilisation of the region

wo Indian journalists have been ordered to

leave country no later than May 20 without
being given any reason for the non-renewal of
their visas. It is claimed in certain government
circles that the decision was made by the military
establishment. The Daily News International,
quoting some close aides of Prime Minister Nawaz
Sharif, said that though they (the government)
tried to ensure that these two journalists would
be granted visas but it was completely out of their
hands as, decisions were being taken elsewhere.
The two journalists, Mr. Snehesh Alex Philip
of the Press Trust of India (PTI) and Ms. Meena
Menon of The Hindu newspaper, were told by
the External Publicity (EP) wing of the Federal
Ministry of Information on the evening of May
13 to pack up and leave the country by May 20.
They received this information in the form of
correspondence delivered in an official brown
envelop which informed them that their visas
would not be renewed.
It looks very much as if the decision was made
in haste and the journalists were told to leave the
country on May 20. However, there are no flights
from Pakistan to India before May 21.
Comments from political circles appear to
agree that the decision from some quarters not
to renew their visas has come at a time when the
Indian communal political party, the BJP, is to
form its government and it is felt that the party is

very much against Pakistan. There is no doubt that

hawks from both sides will enjoy the extremism
and the promotion of fundamentalism.
The Interior Ministry commented that visas for
media people are made on the recommendation of

uckland Mayor Len Brown today announced

emerging and talented Auckland writers.
The Mayor will convene a group from the

It will be open to writers based in the Auckland
region, with the first two years funded from the
Mayoral budget.
Speaking at the Auckland Writers Festival, the
Mayor said:
My intention is to give emerging and talented
writers from Auckland an opportunity to develop
their work for a broader audience.
I hope that this will be a good complement

Dawn, the concerned official in the EP wing said
that, they were on a facilitation desk and that
the decision about the visas had been made by the
Interior Ministry.
The Daily News said that some close aides
of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told The News
that, though they tried to ensure that these two
journalists were granted visas, it was completely
out of their hands as decisions were being taken
elsewhere. However, no one would was prepared
to go on record and make this statement. It is no
secret that visa matters for foreigners are handled
by the security establishment.
There is a written agreement between the
Pakistani and Indian governments where a
reciprocal arrangement allows two correspondents
from each country to be stationed in the others
capital. However, for several years now, no
Pakistani journalist has requested a visa to be
posted in India.
The order to leave Pakistan has come at a time
when there is visible rift between the government
of Nawaz Sharif and the military on the issue of
bettering relationships with India and to declare
it as a favoured country. Nawaz Sharif has
committed on many occasions to not only expand
trade relations with India but also ease the travel
restrictions and improve the overall level of interstate ties.

According to one report published in a

Pakistani newspaper today, no reason was given
for this decision.
This is not the first time that an invisible
party in the government has taken action to sour
relationships between Pakistan and India at a
time when bilateral relationships are improving.
It can only be assumed that they consider the
improved relationship a threat to their existence.
It is interesting to note that the annual budget is
being prepared and these issues always appear to
raise their heads around this time so that the armed
forces are granted more allocations.
The Asian Human Rights Commission urges
the government to immediately review its decision
for the non-renewal of the visas for these two
Indian journalists. The governments decision
to do so will also improve the fragile relations
between the two nuclear states at a time when any
possible improvement will only be to Pakistans
benefit.
Such decisions based on unilateral actions will
not only have a negative effect on the bi-lateral
relationship between Pakistan and India but will
also lead to the possibility of warmongering by
the hawks of both countries. The government
must take the situation in hand and show restraint
on such sensitive issues which might bring two
nuclear states closer to destabilising the entire
region.

Labour has better economic vision for NZ

David Shearer

ast week the Government delivered its sixth

budget, and its first surplus.
By contrast, Labour delivered nine surpluses in
nine years.
Despite what the other side might say about
us, our record is better and we have an economic
vision for New Zealand that surpasses anything
the new budget delivered.
Labour wants to modernise the economy to
make it smart, modern and create skilled, highpaying jobs. Above all we will put people first.
The biggest losers in this years budget are first
home buyers. There was nothing in the Budget
to give them hope that house prices were going

become more affordable.

Home ownership rates are their lowest in 50
years. This budget does nothing to change that.
In Auckland, house prices have gone up 40%
in the past five years. The average Auckland
house price is now close to $700,000. With the
government insisting on a deposit of 20% it means
a family will need to come up with $140,000
near impossible for a first time home buyer.
Many Indian families own their own homes,
but for younger couples its getting tougher and
tougher.
Labours housing policies aim to restore the
Kiwi dream of home ownership. There is no silver
bullet. With housing largely ignored for under
the National Government, we are now playing
catch up.We need to tackle home ownership on a
number of different fronts.
So our plan works on different levels. First we

have to address the supply of affordable homes.

Labour will build 100,000 houses over the next
10 years, using economies of scale to bring house
prices down. They will be a mix of houses, from 4
bedroom houses to apartments and town houses.
We will stop offshore speculation in our
housing market. Why should we allow nonresidents speculate in our housing market like
some stock market? Overseas speculators simply
push the house prices up and shut out Kiwis from
being able to afford to buy homes.
We believe our children should be able to raise
their families in their own family homes, just as
we did. Meanwhile, well make it easier for Kiwis
to balance their home budgets. Last year 46% of
us didnt get a pay rise. Average pay rates went up
1.6% when inflation was 1.5%.
We hear a lot about how the economy is
growing and in good shape. Good shape for

whom? The benefits are not getting through to

New Zealanders who are working hard and raising
their children to get the best chance. Thats what
we see within the Indian community. Its leading
the way.
We will help exporters by lowering interest
rates, which takes pressure off our overvalued
exchange rate. We will bring in Universal
KiwiSaver, and the Variable Savings Rate. So
when the Government needs to address inflation,
instead of hiking up mortgage rates, we will
increase contributions to Kiwisaver so that money
will go directly into peoples savings, rather than
higher interest rates where banks get the benefit.
The choice is stark for us all this year.
On one side Labours principled policies
put people first; on the other, for National, it is
business as usual.

Managing a growing economy and supporting families

Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi

ationals sixth Budget shows New Zealand

is heading in the right direction.
Were also putting the well-being of young
families and children at the heart of our new
spending with a comprehensive $500 million
package to help families.
Were making GP visits free for under-13year olds, were extending paid parental leave
and the parental tax credit, and were investing
more in vulnerable children and early childhood
education.

On top of those, for the first time spending

on health tops $15 billion a year. And spending
on early childhood, primary, and secondary
education will reach $10 billion with an
additional $3 billion on tertiary education.
Each of these commitments will help New
Zealanders in practical ways at times of need
and support a growing economy.
Our growing economy is creating more jobs,
and is seeing average wages rise faster than
inflation. Thats happening now and Budget
forecasts show it continuing with economic
growth of 4 per cent next year, and around
170,000 new jobs and a $7600 increase in the
average wage over the next four years.

Were in an enviable position compared with

many other countries.
New Zealanders have shown considerable
resilience since the domestic recession that
Labour left us with, which was followed by
the global financial crisis, and the Canterbury
earthquakes. As a country, weve had some
tough years but now things are looking up.
The Governments books show were doing
better, and confidence surveys show were
feeling better, too.
Well record a small surplus next year and
larger surpluses in the coming years, which will
allow us extra spending, but not so much that it
pushes interest rates higher than they otherwise

would be.Our responsible management will

see Government debt reduced to 20 per cent
of GDP by 2019/20, when we can resume full
contributions to the NZ Super Fund.
Well invest a further $1 billion from the
Government share offers in essential public
assets without having to borrow the money from
overseas lenders. Were working on making
houses more affordable and were going to lift
the standard of teaching to help pupils perform
better and, longer term, to help New Zealand lift
its performance in the world.
This is a Budget from a Government that
knows what its doing for a country that knows
where its going.

Great place to buy homes and make money

Winston Peters

ew Zealand is a speculators dream. Our

housing market is an easy place to make
money.
Buy a house here and there are no property
taxes to pay. No tricky regulations to overcome.
Weve got the for sale sign up and we are a
popular choice for buyers. And property prices
are rising.
But for New Zealand there is no gain.

Many overseas buyers have a real advantage

when they buy here. They can access low
interest loans in their home country, maybe
around 2 per cent, while Kiwis struggle with
much higher interest rates and, lately, controls
by the government.
Foreign buyers are often speculators. They
buy, sometimes leave houses empty till property
prices climb, and then sell. Easy money.
Real estate agencies are doing their bit by
marketing campaigns targeting the overseas
shopper. Websites are laden with Kiwi homes
for sale, just watch Chinese television and there
are infomercials galore about our properties.

We can build all the houses we want, Kiwis

will still be on the back foot unless we restrict
non citizens from buying homes.
There was a revealing figure in this weeks
Budget net migration of 41,000 people. Thats
more than the population of Wanganui, and you
can bet theyll mostly head for Auckland.
More pressure on housing.
What madness is this? Demand for housing
is outstripping supply yet we are allowing more
people into the country. Prices are soaring,
sidelining New Zealand buyers.
Unless New Zealand bites the bullet and
restricts non citizens from buying here, Kiwis

will be squeezed out of the market both by

rising prices and by the sheer number of buyers
from overseas.
Jobs, health and education will all come
under more pressure, classrooms will fill to
overflowing.
Whole suburbs of immigrants will pour
mainly into Auckland, choking the system even
more, driving down wages even further and
splitting more families apart by driving more
young New Zealanders overseas.
No government has the right to sell its people
out like this. The National Party is trading away
our future and our birthright, along with our

Internet Party vows to slash internet costs

ntroducing competition to the international

bandwidth monopoly is a major step towards
halving the costs of Internet services for all
New Zealanders, says the Internet Party.
In its draft Cheaper, Universal Internet
policy released today, the Internet Party says it
will push for construction of an additional fibre
optic submarine cable connecting New Zealand
to Australia and the United States to end a
bandwidth monopoly that is ultimately hitting
Kiwis hard in the back pocket and stifling
innovation.
If prices for international Internet traffic
dont come down, New Zealand cannot grow
in a digital age. Its as simple as that, said
Internet Party chief executive Vikram Kumar.
The international broadband monopoly is
holding New Zealand back with high prices
and artificial limitations on data. It seems

unlikely that private business interests will

be able to fund additional cables to Australia
and the US and drive down prices without
government support or intervention, so we will
move forward with a public-private plan to fill
the gap.
Improving domestic Internet infrastructure
and introducing a National Internet Architecture
Plan are equally important. The South Island,
in particular, suffers from significant costs and
inefficiencies to Internet traffic flows.
People living just outside the main cities
and in rural areas have the biggest complaints
about their Internet connections. While better
wireless Internet connections are part of the
answer, the Internet Party wants to introduce a
more ambitious, bold goal to provide ultrafast broadband using fibre to the homes of
everyone. Specifically, our goal is to provide

fibre to the premises of the 97.8 per cent of New

Zealanders, extending the 75 per cent under the
Ultra Fast Broadband initiative to the whole of
the Rural Broadband Initiative footprint.
This will additionally address regional
inequalities and provide a world of new
opportunities to the whole of New Zealand.
Mr Kumar said the widening gap between
the haves and have-nots had created a
digital divide.
The Internet Party is committed to
supporting Internet access for all New
Zealanders, including those who are otherwise
unable to afford it. Some 200,000 households
69,000 of which have school-aged children
cant afford the Internet or lack the ability to get
online and benefit from what the Internet offers.
We will significantly step up the Computers
in Homes programme so that all households

with school-aged children are online within five

years, while expanding public Internet access
facilities in schools, libraries, marae, councils
and community centres through a mix of local
business sponsorship and direct government
support.
Our policy will make New Zealands
Internet cheaper and universally available,
unlocking opportunities for economic growth,
social justice, education and, above all,
fairness, said Mr Kumar. New Zealand can
become a global leader in the digital age if we
choose to.
The Internet Partys draft Cheaper, Universal
Internet policy is now online for review and
discussion on the policy forum. The workin-progress environment policy document is
available here.

Narendra Modi:

The chai-wala who earned it

A

few years back when Cadbury launched its

Bournville dark chocolate, the catchline of
the TV commercial was You dont just buy a
Bournville; you earn it. A flying animal would
snatch the chocolate from an American travel
host who wanted to have it without much effort
and finally got it back with bandages after a
presumed fight with the animal. Well, he earned
it.
A landslide victory for 64-year-old Narendra
Damodardas Modis Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) is not just about saffron rhetoric
and rabble-rousing speeches and sneaking
admiration for majority Hindus for those who
talk of temples and a Hindu state. If we go back
to the past few years of BJP timeline, we know
Modi, a politician so aggressive that was never
seen in India before, actually earned it. For a
man who would boast his humble tea seller
background and play it to often gallery and to the
hilt, actually earned his due decimating political
rival even within the party.
Modi is often slammed for distorting
history, lowering the political discourse and
held responsible for the 2002 Gujarat riots. But
all that is now history. Narendra Modi, a four
time Gujarat Chief Minister, is now the man of
the moment. When he takes over as the Prime
Minister of India, he would actually earn his
place under the sun.
His political campaigns, which are often
back to back and went on kind of endlessly, were
electrifying and the man never was wanting in
energy. From targetting the Mother-son duo of
Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to attack the
Congress, to tearing apart West Bengal Chief
Minister Mamata Banerjee for rejecting the
overtures of BJP, Modi has been an aggressive
campaigner all along.
According to his own website profile,
Narendra Modis journey began in the by-lanes
of Vadnagar, a small and nondescript town in
North Gujarats Mehsana district.
Born on 17th Sept 1950, Modi was the third

of the sixth children of Damodardas Modi and

Hiraba Modi.Vadnagar is a town that is steeped
in history.
Vadnagar station, where Narendra Modis
father owned a tea stall, was where Narendra
Modi also sold tea.
According to his biography, his early
years were not very easy. It says: The family
belonged to the marginalized sections of society
and had to struggle to make ends meet. The
entire family lived in a small single storey house
(approximately 40 feet by 12 feet). His father
sold tea at the tea stall he set up in the local
railway station. In his early years, Narendra
Modi too lent a hand to his father at the tea stall.

for the first time during filing his nomination for

the Lok Sabha polls mention that he is a married
man. Earlier he would leave the box for spouse
blank. His wife Jasodaben Modi is a retired
school teacher and they hardly lived together.
His wife would, however, remember him as
a man who used to take interest even in kitchen
matters initially.
Modi formally joined the RSS in early 1970s
and was underground during the Emergency in
India declared by Indira Gandhi in 1975.
It was in 1987 that Modi had first joined
BJP. When in 1995 the BJP won a majority in
Gujarat, began a new journey for Modi. Modi
was the key strategist for the BJP in the 1995

While Modi since then has been hounded by rights activists,

political rivals and even foreign governments, he got clean
chits from the courts, including the highest court (Supreme
Court) in India.
It was his tea seller background that in this
election Modi managed to hard-sell projecting
himself as a man who rose from the grassroots.
Modi, it is said, used to spend more time in
school library and was fond of swimming. He
was also inspired by Swami Vivekanandas
ideals.
A man who is held responsible for the 2002
post-Godhra anti-Muslim riots, Modi, according
to his website biography, had many Muslim
friends in his neighbourhood.
Modi also wanted to be in the Army. But
perhaps destiny had other plans for Modi, who
is also a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)
member.
His personal life (he and his wife never
almost lived together after initial few months)
became a subject of poll debate since he would

and 1998 campaigns in the state.

He shot into limelight in 2001 when
Keshubhai Patel exited as Gujarat chief minister
after a devastating earthquake. As Modi stepped
into the shoes of Keshubhai, there was no
looking back.
But then came the 2002 riots after the burning
down of Hindu kar sevaks (religious volunteers)
in a train in Godhra in Gujarat. What followed
was unprecedented rioting in Gujarat in which
Muslims were killed. It is said about 1000
people and mostly from the minority community
lost their lives in the riots when Modi had
allegedly not acted enough to save them. Then
BJP prime minister at the centre, Atal Bihari
Vajpayee, had reminded Modi that he should do
his Rajdharma.
While Modi since then has been hounded by

rights activists, political rivals and even foreign

governments, he got clean chits from the courts,
including the highest court (Supreme Court) in
India.
He was even denied a US visa since 2005
for the riots and has been seen since then as an
untouchable politically and internationally. But
the rapid economic development of Gujarat
and his meteoric rise in BJP, overtaking party
patriarchs like LK Advani, forced everyone
to take note. Also Modi used an aggressive
marketing machinery and team and among all
the political leaders in India, he is perhaps the
first to tweet on every issue. Modi used social
media and Internet to the hilt in furthering his
political image.
Modi became such a brand that even T-shirts
in his name flooded the market though his own
fashion statement has been well ironed wrinklefree kurtas procured from a store called Jade
Blue in Ahmedabad.
His poll campaigns were almost telecast live
on his websites, something that Congress or
any other party failed to do so far. His website
is perhaps a journalists favourite tool since
nothing is left out there and in real time.
Modi also became a darling of the
industrialists in India cutting across their political
connections and sectors. So even a Ratan Tata
would take his Nano plant to Gujarat after the
Singur land movement in West Bengal. It is said
the industrialists were more keen to see him in
New Delhi and had backed him all along.
With the landslide election victory, the
unputdownable Modi will begin a new journey
as the Prime Minister of India. Whether he lives
up to the expectations of people time will tell,
but for now, here is a politician who truly earned
his position overcoming all the odds in a nation
where dynastic politics and aristocracy ruled the
roost for a very long time.

Narendra Modi sweeps India

ew Delhi, May 16 (IBNS): Jubilant

supporters burst firecrackers, danced
on streets and gave out sweets as 63-year-old
Narendra Modi on Friday claimed victory
in Indias 2014 national election that all but
guaranteed his promotion to the post of the
countrys next Prime Minister.
Decimating the ruling Congress in a
landslide victory, Modi led the Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) to win 285 seats out of 543
that made it the first party to cross the majority
mark of 272 on its own in over 30 years.
Riding on an unprecedented wave of
expectations coupled with widespread
resentment against the ruling Congress-led
United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Modi
almost singled-handedly bought the BJPled National Deocratic Alliance (NDA) to a
340-seat-tally.
Sonia and Rahul Gandhi-led Congress
party meanwhile was routed to just 43 seats, a
huge 162 seats short of last time, ending Prime
Minister Manmohan Singhs tenure with a
humiliating blow.

While political analysts attributed the

verdict to a barrage of corruption scandals
under the UPA government, indecisive
governance and failure to satisfy and
increasingly aspirational electorate, supporters
of Modi credited the Gujarat Chief Ministers
promises and performance record.
Seen as a business-friendly leader who can
cut down red tape to expedite development
in Asias third-largest economy, the Hindu
nationalist leader successfully overcame his
reputation as a divisive politician who failed
to curb religious riots in his state that cost
thousands of Muslim lives in 2002.
In his first public address after registering
a whopping victory in the Lok Sabha
polls, Narendra Modi, tone of Indias most
aggressive leaders in recent times, fronted a
starkly different tone as he thanked the voters
in his constituency Vadodara for supporting
him.
Even if weve clear majority to run the
government, its our responsibility to take
everyone along in running India, said Modi

Elections Results 2014

after earlier paying a visit to his mother to

seek her blessings, ending an over eight month
Presidential campaign.
Renewing his vow to reboot the economy
and deliver efficient governance, the threetime Chief Minister who was elected to
parliament from Vadodara and the holy city of
Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, said development
for all would be his mission.
Following the verdict that matched most
exit poll predictions, Modi is expected to land
in Delhi on Saturday and lead a roadshow to
the BJP office for a meeting of its top decisionmaking body, its parliamentary board.
The victory, for all its captivating rags to
riches tale of a humble tea seller, however did
not appear to quell all dissenting voices within
the party as BJP patriarch raised eyebrows
after he said Modis role in the resounding
victory needed an assessment.
But for supporters on streets and foreign
governments Modis victory was definitive
and finite. While Modi! Modi! chants rang
through streets around BJP offices nationwide,
foreign governments including the United
States and Israel congratulated the party.
US congratulates BJP on its victory in
Indias historic election; we look forward to
working w/ govt once formed to advance our
partnership, the National Security Council
(NSC) of the White House tweeted.
Congratulating BJPs prime ministerial
candidate Narendra Modi, under whose
leadership the BJP-led NDA registered the
victory, Israel prime minister Benjamin
Netanyahu said,Looking forward to work
together, enhance bilateral relationship.
Meanwhile as Modi claimed victory, last
tallies of votes showed three regional parties
Trinamool Congress (TMC), All India Anna
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK),
and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) claimed respectable
results at 34, 37 and 18 seats each.

the heart of New Delhi amid massive fanfare.
Addressing BJP workers, Modi said: I
congratulate and thank the workers for the
win. Their hardwork and sweat ensured the
Lotus shines again in Delhi.
I thank you for the warm welcome
from the airport till here, Modi told
BJP Karyakartas as he reached the party
headquarters.
With a victory sign and a satisfied smile
Modi began his victory rally from the airport
on Saturday towards party headquarters.
Arriving to a grand welcome, Modi dressed in blue and gray - waved to a sea
supporters who danced, cheered and beat
drums.
After the roadshow, Modi attended a
meeting of the partys parliamentary board
to decide on the next course of action.

ew Delhi, May 16 (IBNS): With the

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) all set
to form the next government in New Delhi
with a clear majority and under the Prime
Ministerial ship of Narendra Modi, party
veteran LK Advani on Friday raised eyebrows
after he said an assessment is required on
how much the Gujarat CMs leadership had
contributed to the win.
I think there is a need for a detailed

analysis on this. It needs to be assessed as

to how much contribution has been made by
Narendra Modis leadership, RSS and BJP
towards the partys victory, he said.
I believe corruption, inflation and bad
governance were the main reasons for such
results to come out, he told reporters here.
Advani won the Lok Sabha elections from
Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

Time to rewrite Indian success story: Rajnath

ew Delhi, May 16 (IBNS) With

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) all set
to form the next government in New Delhi
with a clear majority, party president Rajnath
Singh on Friday said though it was being
said that the Indian success story has ended,
time has come to rewrite it.
Time has come for us to rewrite the
Indian success story, said Rajnanth Singh
addressing the media.
He said the new government will give
good governance and credited the victory
largely to Modis hard work.
People have voted for a change and for
Narendra Modi and the BJP, he said.
He thanked the BJP workers on the ground
who made possible the win.
He said BJP is now a party for all, from
farmers to tribal to forest dwellers to lower
castes to those living in slums.

Advani

He said BJP is not anymore an urban

party.
People had lost faith in political parties
and politicians. Now it is back again with
this verdict, he said.
He also urged all party workers to
exercise restraint after the win and conduct
themselves responsibly and not play to any
provocation.
He said all decisions will be taken in
parliamentary board meeting of the party.
We welcome all political support, he
said, adding that all NDA allies will be part
of the government.
Singh said L K Advani is not only their
senior leader but also their mentor and guide.
He also rubbished reports of differences in
the party over Modi.
He said the party believes in justice to all
and appeasement to none.

I think there is a need for a detailed analysis on this. It

needs to be assessed as to how much contribution has
been made by Narendra Modis leadership, RSS and BJP
towards the partys victory, he said.

I dont see any reason for Sonia, Rahul to resign: Nath

ongress leader Kamal Nath on Saturday

said he could not find any reason for
party supremo Sonia Gandhi and vicepresident Rahul Gandhi to resign.
Kamal Nath told CNN-IBN: If the
government cannot convey its perception
to people, than Rahul cannot be held
responsible. I dont see any reason that they
(Sonia, Rahul) should resign. They have
accepted the responsibility.
Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi may
offer to resign taking the responsibility of
the partys worst ever defeat in the 2014 Lok
Sabha elections, said reports on Saturday.
Quoting Congress sources, reports said
Sonia and Rahul are likely to offer their

resignations at the Congress Working

Committee meeting scheduled to be held on
Monday in New Delhi.
However, the move will be symbolic as
the partys top brass will not accept their
resignations, said sources.
On Friday, Sonia said: The people have
given their verdict against us. As the Congress
president, I take the entire responsibility of
our defeat.
Moments later, Rahul said: Congress
has done pretty badly. There is a lot of
introspection needed. As the partys vice

TN, Bengal, Orissa defy Modi wave

ew Delhi, May 16 (IBNS): Even as

the rest of the nation was swept by
Narendra Modi earning the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) the most resounding victory
in over 30 years, three regional players in
Bengal, Orissa and Tamil Nadu markedly
held their ground on Friday, results showed.
J Jayalalithaa-led All India Anna Dravida
Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Mamata
Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC),
Naveen Patnaik led Biju Janata Dal (BJD)
posted 37, 34 and 18 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil
Nadu, West Bengal and Orissa respectively.
In a one-horse race, Tamil Nadus ruling
AIADMK served a crushing defeat to its
arch-rival Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam
(DMK), Congress and BJP-led six-party
alliance.
Improving its winning streak of the
assembly polls in 2011, the AIADMK won
the prestigious Nilgiris (SC) seat as its
candidate C. Gopalakrishnan defeated 2G
scam accused A.Raja of DMK by a margin of

over 109,000 votes.

While a candid Jayalalithaa admitted that
the current situation did not give scope for
her party for its participation in government
formation, she said the AIADMK had
emerged as the third largest party in Lok
Sabha said and would function as a
responsible political party.
Meanwhile, in West Bengal, after putting
up a strong performance, the TMC on Friday
said it would play a greater constructive role
in the country.
Out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats, Banerjees
TMC scored in 34 seats and claimed that
success came despite malicious campaign
launched by a section of the media against
which the party fought single-handedly.
In Orissa meanwhile BJD posted a onesided victory by scoring on 113 of the 147
assembly constituencies and 18 of the 21 Lok
Sabha seats, far ahead of rivals Congress and
BJP.

olkata, May 16 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief

Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC)

Trinamool stands for economic stability and
works for people of all caste, creed and religion,
she said.

She said her party will continue to work for the

people of the West Bengal.
Trinamool works for the people. We will
continue to work for the poor people, Banerjee
said. As counting of votes cast in the Lok Sabha
polls continued on Friday, Banerjees TMC was
seen leading in 34 seats in West Bengal.

Manmohan Singh resigns, says India far stronger than a decade ago
N
ew Delhi, May 17 (IANS) Ending a
decade at the helm, Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh Saturday submitted his
resignation to President Pranab Mukherjee
and, in his last address to the nation, said he
was leaving India a far stronger country in
every respect than it was a decade ago.
Manmohan Singhs resignation came a day
after the BJP routed the Congress in the Lok
Sabha election.
But before tendering his resignation to
President Pranab Mukherjee, Singh gave a
brief televised farewell address to the nation
where he acknowledged his debt to the country
that empowered him, an underprivileged
child of partition, to occupy the high office of
prime minister and said he had tried to do his
best in serving the country.
He said the just concluded national
election, in which the Congress suffered its
worst defeat, deepened the foundations of our
democratic polity and its judgement should
be respected by all.
In his address in both Hindi and English, he
said he was confident about the future of India.
I firmly believe that the emergence of
India as a major powerhouse of the evolving
global economy is an idea whose time has
come. Blending tradition with modernity and
unity with diversity, this nation of ours can
show the way forward to the world. Serving

welcome Saturday as he came to Delhi, a day
after his party got an overwhelming majority
in the general election.
I wish the incoming government every
success as it embarks on its task and pray for
even greater successes for our nation, Singh
said.
After his short address, the prime minister
met his cabinet for the last time.
At the cabinet meeting, all the ministers
passed motions of thanks for the prime
minister for helming the nation for a decade.
The prime minister, in turn, also passed a
motion of thanks for his cabinet colleagues.
He then went to Rashtrapati Bhavan
to submit his resignation in the afternoon.
President Mukherjee, an old party and cabinet
colleague of the prime minister, saw off
Manmohan Singh.
Later, Parliamentary Affairs Minister
Kamal Nath, who was just among the three
cabinet ministers in the Manmohan Singh
government who won this time, also met the
president and asked for the dissolution of the
15th Lok Sabha.

Manmohan Singhs legacy: A mixed bag for history to judge

istory will be kinder to me, Prime Minister

Manmohan Singh stated at his final press
conference earlier this year. As he ends his
decade-long tenure as head of two successive
UPA governments, his stock as a middle
class hero stood severely diminished due to a
floundering economy, shrinking opportunities
and the acts of omission and commission
of colleagues in the government and party.
Yet, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stands
out in eyes of those who worked with him and
knew him closely as a visionary and statesman
who pushed through policy moves that he felt
were critical for the country in the long run,
had a strategic conception of a rising Indias
place in the world while also keeping the
shaky UPA boat afloat till the end, swallowing
his own pride many a time in the process.
He exhibited rare daring and passion at least twice
in his public life -- once when as finance minister
he sculpted Indias economic reforms in 1991 in
the face of a balance of payments crisis, and then,
at the fag end of UPA-I, when as prime minister
he determinedly pushed through the landmark
India-US nuclear deal.
A key proponent of inclusive growth, whose
economic ideology of combining development
with social equity was shaped by his teachers at
Cambridge, Manmohan Singh -- who also studied
at Oxford and taught at the Delhi School of
Economics -- piloted the key welfare initiative in the
shape of the rural employment guarantee scheme.
The scheme that guaranteed a member of every
rural poor household 100 days employment in
local infrastructure and development projects
was a hit and helped the prime minister
win a second term with 200-plus seats.
But, according to his former media advisor
Sanjaya Baru, the credit for the scheme
was hijacked by the Congress party, which
sought to showcase it as the achievement
of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.
Baru says an attempt by him to play it up as the
prime ministers birthday gift to the nation on
Sep 26, 2007, fetched him an admonition from
Manmohan Singh.
Let them take all the credit. I dont need it. I

am only doing my work, he said, Baru recounts

in his book The Accidental Prime Minister: The
Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh.
That line reveals Manmohan Singhs keenness
to always remain in the shadows, behind party
president Sonia Gandhi, never striving to project
himself more than her or the Gandhi family. After
all, the family appointed him prime minister
in the first place over many other aspirants.
Dr Singh had a powerful story to tell about his
achievements as prime minister, but he invariably
shied away from telling it...I want my work to speak
for me, Baru quotes him as saying in his book.
Though criticised at home and described
by the opposition as weak, indecisive and
heading a government that was most corrupt,
Manmohan Singh was a different person
during his diplomatic trips abroad -- confident
and in charge, not hobbled by the pulls and
pressures of party and coalition politics.
B.K. Chaturvedi, who was cabinet secretary
from 2004 to June 2007 and worked closely
with Manmohan Singh, says that the enormous
respect which the global community, including
China, USA, Russia and other major powers gave
to India was due to his personality and enormous
depth of knowledge of economic issues.
His quiet handling of the 2006 tsunami and
other major disasters, his humility and enormous
courtesy to his colleagues, coupled with depth
of knowledge and his continuous emphasis on
introducing reforms. He is a prime minister with
great vision for India, Chaturvedi told IANS.
Outlining his legacy, Chaturvedi said: The
prime ministers legacy to the government is,
first, handling the nuclear apartheid of India and
making it part of the international community,
increasing per capita incomes three times during
the last decade, sharp reduction in poverty,
rapid increase in rural consumption, enhancing
citizens rights in governance, and bringing
transparency through RTI, MGNREGA,
Food Security and other legislation, large
investments in social sector and a quantum leap
in infrastructure investments in the economy.
Former foreign secretary Shyam Saran, who was
closely connected with the negotiations of the

India-US civil nuclear deal, said Singh would

be remembered as one of Indias most cerebral
and visionary leaders who carried his wisdom
and intellectual brilliance with rare modesty.
After the 2009 mandate, with the obstructive
Left parties out of government, things should
have looked up for the prime minister in
the second term. Instead they deteriorated.
The chipping away at the position of the prime
minister by the other centre of power that
existed, Congress president Sonia Gandhi
who wielded the upper hand, led to the
unravelling of UPA-II, according to many.
According to one of his technocrat advisers,
the turning point for Manmohan Singh in his
second term came when he underwent his
second quadruple bypass surgery in 2009.
Thereafter, he seemed to be giving up.
He lost his drive and he became completely
non-confrontational and was unwilling to
intercede in ministerial and official disputes, the
adviser told IANS, not wishing to be identified.
Another official at the PMO, who was privy to
cabinet issues, said in more instances than one,
when ministers came to him to resolve policy
disagreements between them, Manmohan Singh
asked them to resolve the problem between
themselves and refused to intervene. He even
told a senior government functionary, who
suggested that he talk to the media more often, that
he talk to the media on his behalf. He just seemed
to be giving up at one time, recounted the aide.
In his latest blog, BJP leader Arun Jaitley sums
up Manmohan Singhs position: ...He was
literally a Prime Minister announced by Sonia
ji. He had to function within that limitation.
He adds: ...He never wanted to rock the boat.
He knew that he was vested with limited power
and on all major decisions he had to keep the
party and its first family in good humour.
BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar told
IANS: Manmohan Singh was a good man
but, unfortunately, he was the head of a bad
government. He allowed the demeaning of
his own office, he failed to stop the country
from being looted by his ministers, and
was also responsible for policy paralysis.

But V. Narayanasamy, Minister of State in the Prime

Ministers Office (PMO), said the prime minister
will leave the legacy of a good administrator.
Calling Manmohan Singh an upright and
honest PM, Narayanasamy said he saw the
merit of every case before taking a decision.
On the opposition charges that the PM was
weak, and that this led to a dual power center,
Narayanasamy said it was wrong criticism.
It is on the basis of the partys policy that the
government came to power.
The party matters and it cannot be ignored.
The partys ideology drives the government and
both are interlinked, the minister told IANS.
The prime ministers recent communication
advisor Pankaj Pachauri said that among his
biggest acts was he kept the economy on good
trajectory -- but for the past two years when the
economy was affected by the global downturn -and has written a new paradigm of inclusiveness.
Describing the prime minister, Pachauri told
IANS: I have never seen him angry. He has a fine
sense of humour. He is very down to earth and has
good equations with all ministers and colleagues.
According to Baru, Congress vice president
Rahul Gandhis outburst last year when he
publicly trashed an ordinance to save convicted
legislators from disqualification as complete
nonsense, was part of a larger plan to replace
the prime minister and anoint Rahul Gandhi.
Baru had publicly said then that the prime
minister should quit after the insulting remarks.
Former cabinet secretary T.S.R. Subramaniam,
who held the post during 1996-1998, feels
Manmohan Singh was a good man and was
chosen specifically to play second fiddle.
My own judgment is that he was not cut
out for that job. Leaderships job is to take
decisions. The prime minister is not supposed
to be number two. I think it (the post) was
too big for him, Subramaniam told IANS.
It is also important that the top man leaves
the post in a better condition. He (Manmohan
Singh) has diminished that office. The next prime
minister will have to bring it back to its original
(stature) and it is a difficult (task).

Sonia, Rahuls offers to quit rejected, CWC for thorough party revamp

ongress president Sonia Gandhi and party

vice president Rahul Gandhi Monday
offered to resign owning responsibility for the
crushing defeat in the Lok Sabha polls but the
party rejected it while promising a thorough
revamp and structural changes and admitting it
was unable to connect with the electorate.
Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi made the
offer of resignation at the Congress Working
Committee (CWC) here meeting but the party
leaders unanimously rejected their offer.
The CWC, the Congress highest decisionmaking body, authorised Sonia Gandhi to take
whatever steps necessary in order to revamp
the party organisation at all levels and sought to
boost morale of party workers by pledging more
opportunities for them in the party.
The party chief blamed polarising campaign
of Bharatiya Janata Party for the defeat and said it
was backed by unlimited resources and a hostile
media. She said the party needed clear-headed
and fresh thinking to correct shortcomings and
unless structural changes were made the party

will not be able to meet the serious challenge

it faces.
Party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said
that 29 of 38 members spoke at the meeting which
lasted about two and a half hours. According to
party sources, almost one-third of the time of the
meeting was taken up by the members urging
both Gandhis not to press their resignations.
A resolution adopted at the meet termed the
results a matter of great disappointment and

said the CWC understands the pain of

party workers and will collectively take
corrective steps to win back support of
people.
There were shortcomings and
the party failed to read the profound
changes that had taken place in the
country during UPA rule, mainly
because of its policy measures, it said.
We should introspect as to why
we were unable to connect with the
electorate. Both the government and
the party must share responsibility for
the failure and we do so, it said, calling
for corrective measures by the party and its state
governments.
The CWC pledged that it will create within
the party opportunities and structures that will
pave the way for a thorough revamp of the
organisation. It said the Congress will continue to
defend values of democracy, secularism, inclusive
development and social justice.
Sonia Gandhi, in her speech, said UPA
government faced anti-incumbency and said the

party should try to understand why its support

base was eroded to such an extent.
Have we
fully identified with aspirations of our people? Are
we in tune with the aspirations of the youth? Have
benefits of growth really reached the people? Is
our party keeping pace with the change, she
asked.
She said she had not been able to bring
necessary changes to strengthen the party and
took full responsibility for the this crushing
defeat and was prepared to relinquish her
position.Speaking soon after her, Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh said that the problem will not
be solved by resigning.
Dwivedi said after prime minister spoke,
Rahul Gandhi also offered to resign saying that
there should be accountability and he had not
been able to meet expectations from him.
The CWC was full of praise for both
Gandhis for their effort in campaign, while they
appreciated the way Manmohan Singh led the
United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government
for 10 years, said Dwivedi.

Modi takes victory laps, taunts Congress on defeat

N
ew Delhi/Varanasi, May 17 (IANS) A day
after he led the BJP to an unprecedented
triumph in the parliamentary polls, Narendra
Modi, set to be Indias next prime minister,
Saturday undertook victory laps in Delhi and
Varanasi, the second Lok Sabha seat he has won,
and taunted Congress over its historical loss.
A sea of supporters waved Bharatiya Janata
Party flags, blew conches, beat drums, danced
and shouted slogans as soon as the Gujurat chief
minister stepped out of the Delhi airport after
flying in from his state. The celebrations continued
all through the long route to the party office.
Besides BJP president Rajnath Singh, the
seven newly-elected party MPs from Delhi were
among those who received Modi, visiting Delhi
a day after the announcement of the Lok Sabha
results.
His tone and expressions much more relaxed
than what was witnessed during his over 400
rallies during the poll campaign, Modi dedicated

the partys thumping victory in the Lok Sabha

polls to the generations of loyal party workers
as he reached partys national headquarters at 11,
Ashoka Road in central Delhi
The first political reference in his speech came
only late in the evening in the Hindu holy city of
Varanasi, when he took a jibe at Congress for its
pathetic loss, as it was limited to 44 Lok Sabha
seats.
We have heard about coalitions to form
government but now we have a situation where
they need alliance for opposition, Modi said
in Varanasi after he offered prayers at Kashi
Vishwanath Temple, referring to the partys
unprecedented, poor show.
In New Delhi, the BJP office was converted in
a fortress, but it could do little to keep the party
workers and supporters away who kept gathering
outside the premise, dancing to the tune of bands
playing on the cordoned, decorated road.
In a message of peace, Modi released a

bunch of white balloons here, as rose petals were

showered in welcome.
Modi attended a meeting of partys
parliamentary board of the party, which decided
to meet May 20 to formally elect him as its leader.
It is a mere formality, there is no need to tell
who will be elected, Rajnath Singh said after
the meeting, which was attended by veteran
party leader L.K. Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Murli
Manohar Joshi, Arun Jaitley, M. Venkaiah Naidu,
and Amit Shah along with others.
The BJP president also said after the meeting,
they would call a meeting of National Democratic
Alliance (NDA) allies.
He also said that they have not yet finalised a
date for the swearing-in ceremony for Modi or his
cabinet.
Modi then left for Varanasi, the second Lok
Sabha seat he won along with Vadodara.
In the holy city, where he defeated Aam Aadmi
Partys Arvind Kejriwal and Congress Ajay

Rai, Modi performed a ritualistic puja at the

Vishwanath temple, one of the most pious Shiva
temples.
He then participated in a Ganga arti at the bank
of the river, holy for Hindus.
I was stopped from speaking to my people
in Varanasi. In spite of that, people voted for me.
They put a stamp on my silence, he said in an
indirect reference to the Election Commission
which had stopped him from holding a rally in
a Beniyabagh, a Muslim dominated area, on
security grounds.
Modi also promised to clean up the holy city.
By 2019, when we celebrate the 150th
anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, we should have
cleaned up the country, Modi said on the banks
of the river.
BJP became the first non-Congress party
since Independence in 1947 to win a comfortable
majority on its own in the 545-member Lok
Sabha.

Nitish Kumar quits as Bihar CM over poll debacle

atna, May 17 (IANS) Bihar Chief Minister

Nitish Kumar resigned Saturday, taking moral
responsibility for the rout of his Janata Dal-United
in the state in the general elections, even as party
legislators reiterated their support and asserted
they would persuade him to continue.
Governor D.Y. Patil late Saturday accepted the
resignation.
After Nitish Kumar made the announcement,
most of JD-U legislators announced that they
would persuade him to change his mind for sake
of the states development while hundreds of party
leaders and workers flocked to the party office
to express their solidarity. Incidentally the same

party office was deserted Friday after the results

came out. I led the partys campaign. I take moral
responsibility for the election result, a visibly
despondent Nitish Kumar said at press conference
after submitting his resignation.
The JD-U won only two of the states 40 Lok
Sabha seats - as against 20 seats 2009, when it was
in alliance with the BJP, with which it parted ways
last year after a 17-year-long alliance.
Nitish Kumar made it clear that he has not
recommended the dissolution of the assembly,
while a meeting of the legislature party has been
scheduled for Sunday.
We did not get the expected support...(and)
there is no doubt that the mandate is for the BJP,
said Nitish Kumar, who has been in the saddle
since Nov 24, 2005, and won a second term in the
2010 assembly elections. He added that he has not
seen this kind of polarisation in Indian politics.
Bihar minister Vijay Choudhary said that
everything will be decided in the meeting Sunday.
All of us are with Nitish Kumar. It is a rumour
that some JD-U legislators are unhappy and likely
to desert, he said.

JD-U legislator Gajanand Shahi alias Munna

Shahi said that there was no chance of any split in
the party. Another JD-U legislator Izhar Ahmad
said: We will not accept his resignation in the
JD-U legislature party meeting Sunday.
Another legislator, Anant Kumar Singh said
Nitish Kumar is a popular leader and if there is a
requirement, the party will go to people for a fresh
mandate. At present we are trying to convince
Nitish Kumar not to resign, he said.
Nitish Kumars arch rival, Rashtriya Janata Dal
chief Lalu Prasad told media persons that his party
will keep watch on developments. I know that the
Nitish Kumar government has numbers with it as
he is having simple majority, said Lalu Prasad,
whose party was also decimated in the polls.
The BJP however described the resignation as
a political stunt. There is nothing new in it, Nitish
Kumar is habitual of resigning. He had resigned
when a rail accident took place during his tenure
as union railway minister and later withdrew
it, tweeted former deputy chief minister Sushil
Kumar Modi, who had called for Nitish Kumars
resignation after the poll results Friday.

Leader of the opposition Nand Kishore Yadav

termed it a natak (drama) as part of Nitish
Kumars strategy to end a revolt-like situation
among his party legislators.
People expressed shock over the development.
It is going to be a big setback for Bihar, which
is on the development track under Nitish Kumar.
I never expected it, said businessman Ashok
Kumar Singh.
Anant Kumar, a student, said: I think he was a
victim of caste and communal polarisation in polls
as he was only talking about development and
asking people to support him for his work.
Since the JD-U fared poorly in the Lok Sabha
election, there had been intense speculation the
Nitish Kumar government may fall.
Another setback was that then JD-U bagged
only one of five assembly seats where by-polls
were held along with the Lok Sabha polls. The
RJD bagged three seats and the BJP took one.
In the 243-member assembly, the JD-U has 118
legislators while the BJP has got 91. RJD is placed
third with 22 lawmakers, Congress has four and
others are 8.

Modi is PM
What happens next?
A

midst much hype and hyperbole, Narendra Modi has been elected
Prime Minister of India. For a fatigued electorate, who put him there
and now watch with tired eyes, the time has come to hold the PM and his
administration accountable.
In one of his early post-victory rallies his comment to the people went
something like this, You have taught me to walk, to be a leader. If I am
successful in leading this country, then the credit goes to you. If I fail, perhaps
I have fallen short in being a good student and learning well.
When the 63 year old then Prime Minister designate made his first visit to
the Parliament on the back of a landslide victory, he bowed before and kissed
the steps of the building as he entered it. He was going to a meeting of the
BJP parliamentary party and his allies and colleagues in the NDA.
The dust seems to have settled somewhat since. The messages of
congratulations have been sent and received. Tears have been shed and the
stock market toddled back into stability of sorts. Rating agencies worldwide
eagerly declared that a stable government would vastly improve the business
environment in India. Foreign investors are no doubt keen to shake hands
with this new Prime Minister with a development for all mandate.
But a week into the job, what more can India expect. If as Chief Minister
of Gujarat Narendra Modi was hands on; can we safely assume that as Prime
Minister it would be the same avatar but with more depth, dimension and
flair?
It might seem like answers to these questions are foregone conclusions
through endless column-spaces of analysis on the subject. But if this
election has proven anything, it is that the Indian voters do not get swayed
or influenced by analysis. Consider the BJPs victory in light of the focus on
Narendra Modi and his many failings in the run-up to these elections. He still
won by majority, so it seems pragmatic to wait and watch and at best, take
an educated guess.
So far, word has it that plans are quietly being rolled out but nothing has
been explicitly stated. Taking an educated guess, and coupled with reliable
speculation word is out that the Home Ministry is likely to go to veteran
leader Rajnath Singh and the Defence Ministry to Murali Manohar Joshi.
Another senior leader Arun Jaitley could be tasked with the Finance Ministry.
Economic growth over the last two years has decreased sharply leading
to an air of stifled restlessness amongst people. And clearing bottlenecks to
accelerate infrastructure projects is likely to be a key priority for the new
Government according to a leading rating agency. Additionally, broadly
improving the business environment and accelerating economic activity
through reducing red tape, structural reforms to governance would be early
goals for Narendra Modis core team.
Much has been said about Narendra Modis style. From autocratic to outof-the-box, expectations are no doubt high. Even those known to be his close
confidantes can say for certain what the people of India can expect.

HEIR courage, resilience, and sacrifice in

the face of extreme adversity, remind us
that we need to be grateful for what we have
and enjoy today
When the first Girmitiyas arrived in Levuka
on board the ship, Leonidas, on May 14, 1879,
they had nothing much with them. They had
their holy scriptures, culture, language and
strong work ethic.
Under the indentured labourer system, they
were to work in the sugarcane plantations. And
work they did.
They worked under extreme slavery
conditions and lived in coolie lines in very poor
conditions. Yet, they endured and became an
integral fabric of the Fijian society. Indo-Fijian
descendants and every Fijian should be proud
of their contribution to the building of this
nation.
The rich legacy of Girmitiyas continues
to inspire Fijians. Their courage, resilience,
and sacrifice in the face of extreme adversity,

remind us that we need to be grateful for what

we have and enjoy today. Their story is not
only for their descendants but for all Fijians.
We need to recognise this important segment of
our history that the Girmitiyas were among the
pioneers of our sugar industry. Their story was
carved is blood, sweat and tears.
As the country prepares to return to
democratic elections on September 17, let
us remember their sacrifices and those of our
forebearers who made similar sacrifices in
other aspects of national life both in times of
peace and war.
Such a rich legacy should be motivation
enough for us to strive for those things that
will help us grow as a nation. Too often, we
focus on issues that are negative and have no
consequence in the overral scheme of things.
The Girmit spirit will help us move forward.

With a dubious legacy, Indias accidental premier bows out

John Chalmers - Reuters

hen it was clear that he was set for a

stunning election victory last week,
Indias Narendra Modi sent a message that
read simply India has won: It instantly
set a record as the countrys most retweeted
Twitter post.
And yet two days earlier the top
trend on Twitter India had been
#ThankYouDrManMohanSingh, a popular
tribute to Manmohan Singh, who bows out
after 10 years as prime minister with deep
respect even if voters thrashed his party in
the polls.
Singh will be remembered for the reforms
he drove through as finance minister in 1991
that prised open a state-stifled economy. In
his budget speech that year, he quoted Victor
Hugo, saying No power on earth can stop an
idea whose time has come.
Those reforms snapped India out of a
shuffling rate of growth of that time, lifted
millions out of poverty and propelled the
country into the league of dynamic emerging
economies.
In a blizzard of commentaries examining
81-year-old Singhs legacy in recent weeks,
the Oxbridge-educated economist has been
praised for his intellect and personal integrity,
and world leaders have reached out to wish
him well in retirement.
And yet Singhs stock tumbled during his
second five-year term as economic growth
skidded, inflation ballooned and spectacular
corruption scandals clattered like skeletons
out of a cupboard. His public silence on many
matters became the butt of jokes, including
one which said movie theatre patrons were
being asked to put their mobile phones in
Manmohan mode.
Singh struggled to fend off the perception
that the real power in his government was

Sonia Gandhi, leader of the Congress party

and widow of former prime minister Rajiv
Gandhi, whose family has ruled India for
most of the time since independence from
Britain in 1947.
In a book published during the election
campaign, The Accidental Prime Minister,
a former media adviser said that Singh
allowed his authority to be undermined by
Gandhi.
You must understand one thing. I have
come to terms with this, the author, Sanjaya
Baru, recalled the prime minister telling
him in 2009. There cannot be two centers
of power. That creates confusion. I have to
accept that the party president is the center
of power. The government is answerable to
the party.
Singhs spokesman dismissed the book
as an incorrect interpretation of the prime
ministers decade in power, but the memoirs
only served to reinforce a popular perception
that an extra-constitutional authority had
called the shots for years.
FATHER OF REFORMS
The only prime minister since independent
Indias first leader to serve two full fiveyear terms and the first Sikh to have held the
office, Singh told his final news conference
that history would in the end be kind to him.
Swaminathan Aiyar, a prominent Indian
journalist, said that Singhs achievements
would indeed become his story.
People will forget Manmohan Singhs
failings, and remember him as the father
of economic reform and superfast growth,
Aiyar wrote in a Times of India commentary.
Born into a poor Sikh family in a part of
British-ruled India now in Pakistan, Singh
studied by candlelight to win scholarships to
Cambridge and Oxford, earning a doctorate
with a thesis on the role of exports and free

People will forget

failings, and remember
him as the father of
economic reform and
superfast growth,
trade in Indias economy.
He held the top finance and economic
planning posts in Indias bureaucracy for
decades and was also head of the central bank
before joining the cabinet in 1991. He became
prime minister in 2004 when Sonia Gandhi,
who led the Congress party to a surprise
victory, declined the job fearing her Italian
birth would be used by Hindu nationalist

opponents to attack the government.

As prime minister, Singh sought to
liberalize the economy further. However, he
often ran into resistance from wayward allies
in his coalition government and from his own
left-leaning party, which prioritized welfare
schemes such as a jobs program for the rural
poor.
In 2008, he stood up to his partys onetime communist allies over a civilian nuclear
energy deal with the United States that took
his country out of decades of diplomatic
isolation over its atomic weapons program.
Singh saw Indias growth story wobble
in the last years of his premiership as global
economic turbulence combined with a policy
paralysis at home battered the investment
climate.
His second term was also overshadowed
by mass protests against corruption, and he
was widely criticized for apparently turning
a blind eye to the graft raging around him.
Harish Khare, who served as the prime
ministers media adviser from 2009 to
2012, described Singh in an article for the
weekly magazine Outlook as spectacularly
unflamboyant, but credited him for making
historic course corrections that brought India
more social harmony, equity and regional
peace.
A leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party,
which routed Congress in the election,
praised the outgoing prime minister for his
dignity and grace but like many voiced
doubt about his overall record.
It was the inability to speak up within
his own party that may compel the historians
to take a different view of the man, Arun
Jaitley said in an article sent to media last
week. Only if he had stood up at the right
time and disagreed he would have been
regarded with still a greater honor.

Will Nehru-Gandhi dynasty reboot or fade out?

Amulya Ganguli

arendra Modi is not far off the mark

when he says that the May 16 results
will be the Congresss worst.
Drawing room and tea-stall chatter
nowadays centres on whether the 128-yearold no longer a Grand Old Party will be able
to reach the 100-seat mark in the 545-member
Lok Sabha in which two MPs are nominated.
It must be mortifying for the Congress
that this figure has become something of a
psychological marker. There will be a faint
sigh of relief in its portals if the party can
cross it, and a precipitous plunge into despair
if it cannot.
Yet, only three decades ago, when the
party won 415 seats in 1984, few would have
thought that such a low benchmark would
become a crucial reference point for it.
The only consolation for the Congress
will be that such wild swings of fortune are
not unknown in Indian politics. After all, the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is on the
verge of recording its best ever performance,
won only two seats in 1984.
If anything, these fluctuations show that
a stable two-party system is yet to emerge in
the country, as in the West.
For the Congress, however, the focus has
to be on the post-poll scenario since a defeat
is staring it in the face. More than the future

of the party, its members and supporters must

be wondering about the fate of the dynasty.
Will it gradually fade away or will be it be
able to lift itself by the bootstraps to face the
challenges which it never anticipated ?
Since four generations of the NehruGandhi family - from Jawaharlal Nehru to
Indira Gandhi, Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi and
Rahul Gandhi - have been the mainstay of
the Congress, it will not be easy for the party
to cut its umbilical links all of a sudden.
The expectation is that not only will the
party men feel like orphans in the dynastys
absence, unable to think and decide for
themselves, but that there will be no one
to keep them from indulging in fratricidal
warfare - a role which only the family was
capable of playing.
During the Congresss earlier periods of
trouble, as the 1977 defeat in the aftermath
of the Emergency, or the 1989 setback
because of the Bofors howitzer scam, the
party was fortunate in having charismatic
family members like Indira and Rajiv to help
it to claw back to power. If Rajiv hadnt been
assassinated in 1991, it is quite possible that
the Congresss 1991-96 stint would have
been further prolonged.
At present, however, neither Sonia
nor her son, Rahul, can claim the kind of

charisma and popularity for which Indira

and Rajiv were known. To make matters
worse, their economic outlook is not in sync
with the post-liberalization India, where
individual initiative has greater salience
in an atmosphere of capitalist enterprise in
contrast to the familys earlier emphasis on
a public sector-driven controlled economy.
Ironically, it is the Congresss archopponent, Modi, who has taken advantage
of the prevailing mood of free enterprise
although it is the Congresss prime minister,
Narasimha Rao, who opened up the economy
in 1991.
Is the fact of Rao not being a family
member (though a loyal Congressman) a
cause of annoyance to the familys feudal
instincts, making it virtually disown the
economic reforms which he started?
It is no secret that Sonias disinterest in
the reforms inhibited the Manmohan Singh
government from energetically pushing them
forward, thereby slowing down the growth
rate in the last few years. The sluggishness
could not but have pleased Aruna Roy,
a member of the left-of-centre National
Advisory Council (NAC) led by Sonia,
who had been bemoaning the governments
emphasis on growth.
Since charisma is much more than just

being good-looking, the family will have

to come to grips with the changes that have
taken place since Sonia learnt her first
lessons in realpolitik in Indiras household
and Rahul came of age. The major change
is that socialism has become outdated, as
Manmohan Singh said, probably in sorrow,
because the doctrine has a fairly high number
of followers in India.
They are present not only in the communist
parties, but also in the academia and in the
NAC. It is the inputs which this outfit
gave to Sonia which derailed the reforms
process. The Congress itself has a number
of socialists in its ranks, including Defence
Minister A.K. Antony and the Kerala unit,
which refused to allow foreign investment in
the retail sector in the state.
If the Congress is to have some chance of
success in the election after the forthcoming
one, which may be earlier than in 2019, it
has to pay heed to Amartya Sens call for
a right-wing, market-oriented, secular party.
For an avowed leftist like the Nobel laureate
to take this line is probably an appeal to the
Congress.
If the Congress pays no attention, the
field will be left open for a right-wing,
market-oriented party which cannot be
called secular.

PM gets standing ovation on last working day in

South Block office

rime Minister Manmohan Singh was given

a standing ovation by his staff during
a farewell hosted for him Tuesday, his last
working day at his South Block office, when
the cabinet also met and cleared the elevation
of the Indian Army vice chief, Lt. Gen. Dalbir
Singh Suhag, as the new head of the force.
Manmohan Singh will submit his resignation
and that of the cabinet to President Pranab
Mukherjee May 17, a day after the Lok Sabha
election results are declared.
Around 110 staffers of the Prime Ministers
Office (PMO) gathered at South Block to give
a farewell to Manmohan Singh, who steps
down after a decade at the helm of the country
leading the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)
government.
The staff gave the prime minister a standing
ovation, a PMO official told IANS.
The prime minister, who did not betray
much emotion, also thanked his staff for their
work. Many officials presented him bouquets.
Manmohan Singh told the PMO staff: I am
very thankful to you all for your service to the
nation. May god bless you.
The official said that it was Manmohan
Singhs last working day in his South Block
office.
Some of the staff who have interacted with
the prime minister during the last 10 years were
seen wiping away their tears, the official added.
Present along with Manmohan Singh were
National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon,
Principal Secretary Pulok Chatterjee, Prime

Ministers Advisor T.K.A. Nair and his Media

Advisor, Pankaj Pachauri.The farewell was
hosted in the spacious corridor of the PMO.
The union cabinet, headed by the prime
minister, also met Tuesday, possibly the last
time for executing government business.
Sources said the cabinet cleared the name of
Lt. Gen. Suhag as the next army chief.
The defence ministry had Monday
recommended his name. The government

move came after the Election Commission gave

the government the go-ahead for appointing the
new army chief.
The BJP had opposed appointment of
the new army chief at the fag end of the
governments tenure.
On Tuesday, the Congress again hailed
Manmohan Singhs experienced and seasoned
stewardship.
India is proud to have earned so many

laurels and respect during the last ten years,

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu
Singhvi said.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi is slated to
host a dinner in honour of the prime minister
Wednesday, party sources said.
Manmohan Singh will deliver a farewell
address to the nation May 17 after he submits
his resignation and that of his government to
the president.
Before that, the prime minister will attend
his last cabinet meeting at which the members
of council of ministers will thank him for his
leadership.
He is likely to address the nation May 17
afternoon, a PMO official told IANS.
Manmohan Singh will continue as the
caretaker prime minister till his successor takes
the oath of office.
The official said that prime minister will
move out of his present 7, Race Course Road
residence and go to his new residence at 3, Moti
Lal Nehru Marg, after the new prime minister
is sworn in.
Manmohan Singh had earlier this year
announced his retirement after a decade at the
helm of two successive United Progressive
Alliance (UPA) governments. On Jan 3 this
year, Manmohan Singh addressed his final
press conference, and only his third in ten
years. He announced his retirement at the press
conference.

Breaking Brahmin monopoly: Hindu temple to

have women, lower-caste priests
- Quaid Najmi
of the state government to take over the temple
in 1968 after the recommendations of the B.D.
Nadkarni Committee.
A former cabinet minister in Maharashtra,
Dange said that the

eres another traditional male bastion

set to crumble. With a Supreme Court
prod, the renowned 900-year old Vitthoba
Temple in the pilgrim town of Pandharpur
will script religious history when it appoints
its first women priests as also priests from the
backward classes as part of an inclusive mission.

This is the first initiative in the country by any

temple trust to break the centuries-old monopoly
of the Brahmins over the temple puja and other
rituals. We are keen that puja and rituals should
be thrown open to all castes, especially nonBrahmins, Anna Dange, chairman of the Vitthal
Rukmini Temple Trust (VRTT) explained to IANS.
The VRTT advertised this week, inviting
applications for eight posts of priests from

all practising Hindus and women wellversed in the two-or-three special pujas for
Lord Vitthoba and his consort Rukmini,
besides other temple rites and rituals.
We shall interview the candidates May
18 and finalise the appointments which
shall be purely temporary and contractual
with the remuneration depending on the
merits of those selected, said Dange.
The VRTT move was prompted by a Supreme
Court judgement in January in a four-decadeold litigation dismissing the claims of exclusive
ancestral rights over the earnings and rituals at
the temple by the Badve and Utpat families here.
The two families had challenged the decision

apex courts verdict has already brought

about a seachange in the past few months
in the earnings of the temple, situated
around 350 km southeast of Mumbai.
Earlier, the two families used to auction
the daily pujas for the two presiding deities
starting at Rs.7,000 ($117) for Rukmini and
Rs.20,000 for Lord Vitthoba. They kept the
daily earnings which were around Rs.150,000
and grew manifold on special occasions and
festivals. Now, all the money is coming to
the VRTT. This year, the temple income will
be more than five crore rupees, Dange said.
The VRTT has been flooded with applications
and many are ready to work free as they
consider it a divine service, Dange said
with a smile. The excited applicants are said
to hail from OBCs, Marathas, the scheduled
castes and scheduled tribes and other castes.

The temple hosts the idol of Lord Vitthoba,

a local version of Lord Krishna, and his
consort Rukmini, and is revered by the
150,000-strong population of the town.
It has a unique scripture on its walls dating to
1195 on which the devotees would rub their backs
to free themselves from the cycles of re-birth.
Attracting around 30,000 devotees from
Maharashtra and other parts of India every
day, the temple atmosphere is festive during
four annual pilgrimages when around nearly
two million devotees daily throng there.
On Navratri and Dassehra, the deities look
spectacular daily with new clothes and jewellery,
with lights and decorations that reflect in the
serene waters of the Bhima river on whose
banks the temple stands, Dange told IANS.
Incidentally, the world-famous 200,000
dabbawalas of Mumbai are staunch devotees of
Lord Vitthoba and Rukmini and they take a brief
vacation for their annual jatras to Pandharpur.
The dabbawalas belong to the clan of Varkaris
who walk hundreds of kilometres from different
parts of the state in processions taking two-three
weeks during the Hindu months of Chaitra (MarchApril), Ashadhi (June-July), Karthik (OctoberNovember) and Maghi (January-February).
A trip to Pandharpur means a visit to some other
famous temples in and around the town, including
the Goddess Tulja Bhavani Temple, the family
diety of the great Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati
Shivaji; Shri Swami Samarth Temple; Lord Shri
Kshetra Temple and Lord Dattatreya Temple.

India must regain its lost glory in

education: President
President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday
said India must regain the lost glory of its
educational institutions and once again become
a centre for cross fertilization of ideas from
across the world. Addressing a delegation
from QS, ICAA, British Council, FICCI and
KPMG who presented the first copy of QS
University Rankings: Asia 2014 to Mukherjee
at Rashtrapati Bhavan here Monday, the
president said India will sooner than later find
its rightful place in the global ranking of higher
education institutions.
Indian educational institutions dominated
the world for a period of around 1,800 years
from 6th century B.C. to 13th century A.D. and
were a magnet for scholars from all over the
world, the president said.
India must regain the lost glory of the
past and once again become a centre for cross
fertilization of ideas from across the world, he
added.
Published annually since 2009, the QS
University rankings: Asia highlights the 300 top
universities in Asia on nine key performance
indicators providing an overview of higher
education in one of the worlds most dynamic
and rapidly developing regions.
The president asserted he had always
emphasized on the need for countrys

educational institutions to improve their global

rankings, and expressed happiness that the
efforts were bearing fruit as the number of
Indian institutions in the rankings had increased
to 17 this year as compared to 11 in 2013.
Mukherjee assured the delegation that
Indian authorities would extend all possible
cooperation to them in obtaining necessary
information in the appropriate format from
Indian higher education institutions.
The institutions should be transparent and
all relevant information should be published in
their websites, he said.
The president is visitor of 98 higher
educational institutions in the country, including
central universities, IITs, NITs, IISERs, IISc,
Indian Maritime University, and IARI Nalanda.

2 to 6 crore Bangladeshi
migrants in India
There are 2-6 crore Bangladeshi migrants
living in India - the largest illegal migration
from one country to another, a former senior
officer of Indias border guards said Tuesday.
Nobody can verify the trend of Bangladeshi
migrants in India but our estimation is no less
than 2 to 6 crore of them in India, former
Border Security Force (BSF) additional director
general P.K. Mishra said at the launch of his
book Bangladeshi Migrants - A threat to India.
Many of them have settled between Purnia
and Islampur (Bihar), which are very close to
the Nepal border. In Pari Pura in Srinagar, there
is a Bangladeshi migrant village, he said.
Mishra claimed that 25 percent of the items

disbursed under the Public Distribution Scheme

goes to the Bangladeshi migrants. What we can
give to our children are snatched by them, he
charged.
There has been 20 years of land acquisition
in (Assams) Guwahati and Kokrajhar.
Government land has been sold to migrants
by the states revenue department, said
Mishra, alleging that the Congress government
in the northeastern state has closed its
eyes to all this due to vote bank politics.
The Bangladeshi chunk in India is the largest
illegal migration from any one country to
another, said former BSF chief Prakash Singh.

New government must continue

peace process with Pakistan: Omar
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar
Abdullah Tuesday said it is important that the new
central government continues the peace process
with Pakistan.
Speaking at a discussion titled Discussion
between India and Pakistan on Jammu and
Kashmir - A historical perspective at the Kashmir
University, Abdullah said the back channel
dialogue between India and Pakistan should move
forward as he believes Kashmir problem has a
political genesis and needs a political resolution.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs special
envoy on Pakistan and Afghanistan Satinder K.
Lamba, presently spearheading a back channel
dialogue with Pakistan, delivered a keynote
address at the function, dwelling in detail the
contours of a possible solution to the problem.
Abdullah said that it is most important that
the new government taking office in New Delhi
carries forward the process of dialogue with
Pakistan and takes ahead the progress made by
ambassador Lamba in this regard.
The transitions in the administration in
Pakistan have impacted the forward movement

in the back channel dialogue more than those in

India, he said, noting that the forward movement
seen during the time of President Pervez
Musharraf was not at the same pace in President
Asaf Ali Zardaris period.
India looked forward towards the dialogue
process with Pakistan both during the period of
Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Dr. Manmohan Singh.
I hope the new government in New Delhi would
not allow the dialogue process to die.
You cannot give any solution which will be
acceptable to each and every citizen of the state.
You have to work out a solution which will satisfy
the aspirations of the majority of the people
though such a solution is difficult to sell yet this
is the only way-out in this regard, he asserted.
He said the dialogue process has two sides and
the two parties with different positions have
to come to a meeting point so that productive
progress is achieved. He reiterated the
necessity for addressing the issue politically
while respecting the aspirations of the
majority of people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Cabinet clears Lt. Gen. Suhag as

army chief
L
t. Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag is set to be the
next army chief with the cabinet clearing his
name Tuesday, sources said.
The decision was taken at the last working
cabinet meeting of the Congress-led UPA
government, which demits office on Saturday,
a day after the Lok Sabha election results are
announced.
The defence ministry Monday recommended
the name of the army vice chief to the government
as the next head of the force.
The move came after the Election
Commission gave the government the goahead for appointing the new army chief.
The Bharatiya Janata Party had opposed
appointment of the new army chief at the
fag end of the governments tenure.
The prime minister will hold his last cabinet
meeting May 17 morning, before handing over to

the president the resignation of his government to

allow the formation of a new regime.
An alumnus of Sainik School Chittorgarh, Lt.
Gen. Suhag joined the National Defence Academy
in 1970 and was commissioned in 1974.
He served as a company commander during
Op Pawan in Sri Lanka, commanded the 53
Infantry Brigade that was involved in counterinsurgency operations in the Kashmir Valley and
commanded the 8 Mountain Division in Jammu
and Kashmir.
In 2012, he was put under a Discipline and
Vigilance ban by then outgoing army chief Gen.
V.K. Singh for a failed intelligence operation at
Jorhat in Assam.
The ban was revoked by Gen Bikram
Singh, when he took over as the army chief,
paving the way for Suhags elevation as the
Eastern Army Commander in June, 2012.

Former Tata Steel chief Russi

Mody dies
F
ormer chairman and managing director of
Tata Steel Russi Mody died in Kolkata on
Friday after a prolonged illness.
He was 96.
Born in 1918, Padma Bhushan Rustomji
Homusji Mody, popularly known as Russi
Mody, is known for his long standing
association with Tata Steel Limited, formerly
known as TISCO.
He retired from Tata Steel in March 1993,
leaving behind a legacy of 53 years, which won
him and the company international acclaim in
various fields especially in Industrial Relations.
Through his method of practical wisdom
and pragmatic decision-making, he led from the
front, winning hearts and minds alike.
Son of Homy Mody and Jerbhai, Russi
Mody completed his education from the Harrow
School and Christ Church College, Oxford,
after which he joined the steel company in
1939.
He rose through the ranks to become
Chairman of the company.
He was promoted to the position of Director
of Personnel in 1953, and took up the position
of Director of Raw Materials in 1965.
In 1970, he was appointed as the Director
of Operations and became Joint Managing
Director in 1972.
He then went on to become the Managing
Director of Tata Steel in 1974 and on Oct
23, 1984 he was appointed Chairman and
Managing Director of Tata Steel.
The Indian government bestowed the
Padma Bhushan upon him in 1989 for his
exemplary contribution to Indian industry.
Reacting to Modys demise, Ratan N Tata,
Chairman Emeritus, Tata Sons Limited, said in
a statement: Russi Mody was an institution at
Tata Steel. Under his leadership Tata Steel grew
significantly and he instituted many human
resource initiatives. He was well regarded and
respected by the work force throughout his
tenure. He lived a full and energetic life and
will always be remembered by his friends.
Cryus P Mistry, Group Chairman, Tata Sons,
said, Russi Mody was a stalwart who steered
Tata Steel to become one of Indias most
respected corporations.
Jamshed J Irani, Former Managing Director
Tata Steel & Director, Tata Sons limited,
said:Russi Mody left his stamp on every
activity that he touched. He was a giant among
men, and never failed to act convincingly in a

manner that he thought was right. For most of

the 40- odd years that I knew him, and worked
with him, he guided me in my duties and we
were great colleagues. He left his stamp of
authority on all aspects of life in Tata Steel and
in Jamshedpur. We will certainly miss him.
B Muthuraman, Vice Chairman, Tata Steel
said: Among Russi Modys several multidimensional characteristics, what stands
out is his passion for people, people aspects
and people development. He had a knack
of spotting talent and giving opportunity to
potential leaders, and all this without the help
of the current day performance appraisals,
various kinds of tests and so on. He was an
excellent judge of people. He would test
potential leaders by throwing into totally new
territory and watch their performance in the
new surroundings.
H M Nerurkar, former Managing Director,
Tata Steel, said : Our nation has lost a great
human being who realised the importance of
excellence in all facets of management and
globalisation earlier than many of his peers
thereby laying the foundation for the company
to grow in the liberalised economy. He will
always be remembered for the difference he
made to the life of employees of Tata Steel.
May his soul rest in peace.
Speaking on Modys demise, T V Narendran,
MD - Tata Steel, India and SEA, said: Russi
Mody has been an iconic leader not only for
Tata Steel but also for India. His connect with
people in the organization and the communities
around us, was legendary. I joined Tata Steel
when he was the Chairman & Managing
Director and had the privilege of seeing him at
work. He was a multi-faceted personality and
knew how to lead a full life. On behalf of all my
colleagues at Tata Steel, both past and present, I
salute Russi Mody.

NFP leader urges united approach Sukhi keeps this granny (102) going
- Avinesh Gopal

iji needs a new culture of dialogue, unity,

and co-operation with political leaders of
other ethnic groups to forge a new approach to
politics in this country, says the leader of the
National Federation Party.
Biman Prasad, in his speech to mark the
135th anniversary of the first Indian arrival to
Fijis shores, urged political and community
leaders to work towards a multi-culturalism
that secured a united Fiji.
As the nation commemorates the l35
anniversary of the arrival of Indentured Indians
to Fiji, the National Federation Party calls upon
all people of this country to remember and
reflect on the struggles and sacrifices of our
forefathers for equality, dignity and justice for
all our people.
At the same time, we should not forget that
May 14, the day that Indentured Indians arrived
on our shores, also is one of the darkest days in
our history when Fiji witnessed its first military
coup and the overthrow of the democratically

elected government in 1987, Mr Prasad said.

The start of the coup culture 27 years
ago has had devastating consequences for the
social, economic and political advancement of
our country.
After 135 years since the arrival of the first
Indians on Fijis shores, the time is right, not
only for the celebration of our rich history in
this multicultural society, but for a reflection of
the freedoms gained, and lost, on the journey,
he said.
Our forefathers operated on the basis of
freedom, human rights, dignity and a virtuous
living - the values that, over a period of time,
guided our fight against the vices of the

as she turned 102 years old on May 14, she said
it was something that had contributed to her
good health over the years.
Deogi Nair is one of the few lucky people
in the country to celebrate her birthday on the
day that marks the arrival of the first group of
indentured labourers to Fiji from India. And
she is also one of the few people in the country
who have crossed the century mark and are still
alive, fit and able to do things for themselves.
Her children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and great great-grandchildren
always ensure they have a small birthday
celebration for her on this day every year.
When a team from this newspaper met her
on May 13 last year, she was in good health,
with good vision, hearing and rolling sukhi
(Indian tobacco). Last week, she was still at it.
Deogi was born at Naitonitoni in Navua on
May 14, 1912. She married Chingovinda when
she was 16 years old. I started smoking sukhi
before my marriage and I told my husband that
he could do whatever he wanted but I wont
leave it, she said with a laugh.

Asked about her secret to good health, she

said, I dont like meat so I hardly eat it, even
fish, but I love to eat green vegetables and I
love my sukhi.
I dont drink yaqona or smoke cigarettes.
Im in good health because I smoke sukhi
whenever I feel like smoking and thats what
keeps me going.
If someone else cooks bhaji or bean, I wont
eat it. I prefer to clean them myself before they
are cooked.
The great great-grandmother said she was
happy to be born on the day when the first
group of indentured labourers came to Fiji

before her birth.
She has seven daughters, six of whom are

May 14 always significant in

Fijis history
- Avinesh Gopal

ay 14 is an important day as far as Fijis

history is concerned it is the day the
first group of indentured labourers set foot here
after arriving from India on board the Leonidas
in 1879.
And it is also the day when the first coup
was carried out in 1987, resulting in many
people, especially Fijians of Indian descent,
fleeing overseas.
The arrival of the
indentured
labourers
slowly moved the countrys
economy
forward,
as
intended, but the military
coup 108 years after their
arrival set it backwards.
In memory of those
who arrived on board the
Leonidas and afterwards,
the Fiji Girmit Council
has organised a function
in Lautoka tonight to
celebrate Girmit Day.
Council
secretary
Vishwa Nadan said May 14
was a very significant day
for the council, for Fijians
of Indian descent and the country as a whole.
Its the day when our forefathers came
to Fiji and Girmit Day is to recognise their
sacrifice and contribution towards Fiji and its
economy, he said.
We will pay homage to our forefathers and
revisit the difficulties they went through then,
as there were no means for them to get justice
unlike what it is now, he said.

Mr Nadan said items related to the indenture

system would be performed during the
celebrations at Girmit Centre tonight.
He said the younger generation would
be reminded of what their forefathers went
through during the indenture system, which
was commonly known as girmit.
We will also highlight the progress made
by the descendants of the indentured labourers
who were brought to
Fiji to toil the sugarcane
fields.
On the first coup on
the same day in 1987,
Mr Nadan said: Its
common knowledge that
the consequences of the
first coup has not put the
country back on par until
today.
The entire country
suffered because of the
coup and Fijians of Indian
descent left the country
in numbers. It was the
deciding moment for
many Fijians of Indian
descent.
The exodus of Fijians of Indian descent
started after the events of the 1987 coup and
its still happening today.
Mr Nadan, however, said the council
would not want to dwell much on the political
events of the past but instead focus on
moving the country forward politically and
economically.

Its the day when

our forefathers came
to Fiji and Girmit
Day is to recognise
their sacrifice and
contribution towards
Fiji and its economy,

Obesity, gout and the sluggish immune system

besity is recognised as a risk factor for gout,

cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and
some forms of cancer. What is less well known
is that carrying excess weight can also prevent
the immune system from functioning correctly.
For those prone to gout, this could work in their
favour!
The prevalence of obesity is increasing
worldwide. In New Zealand almost one in three
adults and one in nine children are considered
obese. The rates are even higher in Maori (48
percent obese) and Pacific (68 percent obese)
adults.
Obesitys effects on the immune system are
thought to underlie some of its connections to
chronic diseases. The link seems to be the fat
tissue itself. Fat cells have been shown to secrete
many factors that local immune cells respond to.
This promotes a state of overstimulation of the
immune system (chronic inflammation), which
impairs normal immune function.
For the past decade Malaghan Institute
Arthritis and Inflammation Group Leader Dr
Jacquie Harper has been investigating the
immune responses that drive gouta disease that
is strongly linked with obesity.
When foods such as liver, kidneys and
sardines are broken down by the body, uric acid
is released, says Dr Harper. Uric acid has many
important health benefits and the body is equipped
to deal with it, but only up to a certain point.
A gout attack is triggered by uric acid
crystallising in the joints. The immune system
perceives the crystals as a threat and launches an

immune response against them. It is the resulting

inflammation that causes swelling, reddening of
the skin and debilitating pain.
Uric acid levels are higher in obese individuals,

Rheumatologist Associate Professor Nicola

Dalbeth and colleagues, we investigated the effect
of diet-driven obesity on immune cell activity in
a model of gout, says Dr Harper. Our study is

increasing their likelihood that they will develop

gout. What has been unclear up until now however,
is whether their gout attacks are worse than those
in non-obese individuals, because of their existing
low level of inflammation. Dr Harpers research,
published recently in Rheumatologywould
suggest not.
In
collaboration
with
Auckland

novel in that we focused specifically on immune

cells not associated with fat tissue, to determine
the wider implications of obesity on immune
function.
We found that obesity elevates the
background inflammatory activity of these
immune cells, just as it does with fat-associated
immune cells. Interestingly however, rather than

making things worse, the presence of the crystals

actually decreased background inflammation.
This is good news for obese individuals
prone to gout because it suggests that their gout
is no worse than that which occurs in some lean
individuals. The bad news however is this study
further supports the growing evidence that obesity
impairs immune function.
While this work has focused on gout, further
research is necessary to determine the broader
impact of weight gain and dietary fat on the ability
of the immune system to respond to different
challenges.
This work was funded by the Wellington
Medical Research Foundation and the Auckland
Medical Research Foundation.

Settling in New Zealand: How migrants feel

Zee Shah
Contimued from last issue....

n the eight years since that study was

done, the large recruitment agency,
highlighted concern over continuing
employer resistance to immigrants, even
in the midst of a critical skills shortage and
an increasingly global market in skills. A
survey of 1705 employers indicated that
eight in ten believe there are barriers to
immigrants participating in the workforce,
and this held true across all industry
sectors and regions. Employers identified
nontechnical skills as the most common
challenge for immigrants, but only 8 per
cent thought technical skills challenged
immigrants. A favouring of immigrants
from Englishspeaking countries was
apparent, and over half were to applicants
from Europe, South Africa and North
America (the socalled ESANA countries),
while a high proportion of those without
job offers were from Asian countries, in
particular India. The most common reason
for offering a job to an immigrant was
that a local applicant was not available,
and successful immigrant applicants were
those with the right attitude. Once in the
job, however, employer satisfaction with
performance was very high at 88 per cent,
and 93 per cent said they would hire an
immigrant again.
Persistent employer negativity toward
employing immigrants has emerged as a
key reason why recent skilled immigrants
feel they are discriminated against. The
National Business Review (23 January

2004) quoted a consulting firm as saying

that almost all unemployed Chinese and
Korean immigrants in the IT area could
get jobs if employers got over their
xenophobic attitudes. The researcher
Marie Wilson concluded that employers
are prejudiced against colour and ethnicity,
and cover their prejudice with excuses
about English and culture (reported in
New Zealand Herald, 2 April 2005).
Recently, the Ministry of Health
released on comprehensive profile of the
health of Asian peoples in New Zealand.
Despite the progress in the health sector,
Asian health arguably occupies a marginal
space in the health system, outside the
frames of reference for the majority
of professionals providing public and
personal health services. Key health
concerns include access to health services;
cardiovascular disease, and diabetes for
Indian peoples; levels of physical activity;
and mental health, particularly in young
people. Despite these identified issues,
there is a policy void for the health of
Asian peoples in New Zealand, with no
clear mandate to consider or monitor
Asian peoples when undertaking research
or formulating policy.
My aim is to highlight these grave
issues to the larger immigrants community
& to all citizens per se. In my quest
to address these issues, here are some
recommendations that I feel would aim to
resolve some of these issues:
Appropriate employment is a
requirement to support the settlement
of immigrants. Employer aversion to
employing immigrants needs to be
addressed through a combination of
policies that reduce the perceived risk

(because of unfamiliarity) of employing

immigrants and other incentives to their
employment. These can be strengthened
with complementary initiatives designed
to educate employers on the benefits of
diversity by employing immigrants and
to reduce employer resistance.
Further research is needed in
relation to the labour market, employers
and workplaces to determine the extent,
nature and dimensions of what appears
to be systematic disadvantages faced
by immigrants in the labour market.
Research is needed also to identify
policies and practices that effectively
reduce barriers to immigrants and
which support diversity. Noting
that the highlighted concerns about
communication,
comparability
of
qualifications and prior work experience,
research is also needed to determine
the significance of differences between
New Zealand and immigrant employees
for productivity.
Many migrants do not register
with a GP and do not know where to go
for medical help, for this reason they
end up at the hospital which doesnt
have the resources to cope.
Register with a GP. Go to the
appropriate medical service like
Whitecross, if you need care, leaving
the hospital as a last resort.
Some people on Working Holiday
Visas do not have the comprehensive
medical insurance they are required to
have, making them vulnerable to mishap.
Make sure you have comprehensive
medical insurance and check the smallprint to make sure you are covered right
through your stay in New Zealand, not

just the first 6 months. Repatriation in

case of serious mishap is an important
inclusion.
There is a small group that fall
outside health provisions: people on a
one year work visa. This group do not
have access to free healthcare and often
do not have medical insurance. This
makes them highly vulnerable and often
they will not realise until something
goes wrong. People in this situation
can end up with large and unexpected
medical bills. There is a need for
Banking & Financial Organisations to
take heed of this & prove them their
comprehensive medical insurance!
Immigrants are future citizens, and
theyve paid a heckuva lot more for their
education than the domestic students. They
pay full freight for all services, unless
granted discounts by virtue of membership
to institutions or societies. (And even in
universities, for instance, theyre paying
5 times the rate of domestic students, for
every paper).
Signing off with an important question
to remember is: If the only industry New
Zealand had to rely on was its agriculture
(and the education and tourism draw did
not exist), would the country be able
to sustain itself? Would the country be
able to develop? International students
asking questions about whether they
can find employment in New Zealand
before, during, and after they attain their
qualification never get their questions
answered satisfactorily. Its the elephant in
the room & its high time we address the
situation. Do write back & let your views
resonate with us.

Banning a book pointless in todays age: Ruskin Bond

- Shradha Chettri

ts pointless banning a book in todays day

and age when everything is easily available
at the click of a mouse. A ban, instead, hypes
up even a not-so-worthy book for readers, said
noted writer Ruskin Bond.
It is no use banning a book in todays age
because one can easily read it from the internet.
So it becomes difficult to ban any form of
literature now, the 79-year-old told IANS in
an interview at the Cambridge Bookstore here
where he visits every Saturday to sign books
and interact with readers.
He was commenting on the controversial
withdrawal of the US scholar Wendy Donigers
book The Hindus: An Alternative History
that was taken off the market in February by its
publishers (Penguin) following pressures from
various groups.
Sometimes it also gives undue importance
to the book, the plump, bespectacled and
ruddy-complexioned Bond, who will turn 80 in
May and still has a fair amount of silver hair on
on his head, said.
Personally I think Donigers book did not
deserve all the fuss. It wasnt doing particularly
well, but after this controversy, more people
wanted to read the book, the Padma Bhushan
recipient pointed out.
Even though the raconteur understands the
importance of internet, he is unapologetic about
being technologically illiterate, and proudly

admits he would always prefer the smell of

books over the swiftness of web.
A book is something you can keep. It is
something you can possess for years, said the
writer, who penned his first novel The Room
on the Roof, when he was 17.
People like building their own libraries and
these books will always be there. Other forms
of entertainment will come along with it, he
added.
Of British descent, Bond, who was born
in Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh, and grew up
in Jamnagar in Gujarat, has surrendered to the

quaint surroundings of Landour near Mussorie,

now in Uttarakhand, since 1964.
This is where he writes, using pen and paper
and not bowing to the lure of technology.
The written word still holds the foundation
of story telling. Now-a-days many people
prefer to write on the laptop and computer, but
I very much believe in the power of written
word, said the Sahitya Akademi recipient who
is best known for childrens literature and ghost
stories.
Author of over 300 short stories, poems and
novels, he has written works like Ghost Stories

from the Raj, A Town Called Dehra The

Parrot Who Wouldnt Talk
and novels like Vagrants in the Valley,
The Blue Umbrella and Angry River.
His autobiographies, like Rain in the
Mountains and Scenes from a Writers Life
talk about his life in Dehradun and trip to
England also fall within
his literary oeuvre.
Despite writing exhaustively on his personal
life, nature and the many people around him for
over three decades, the writer of British descent
feels he would never run out of stories.
I have always written a lot about my past.
As I go back into my life, and the older I get, I
have more to write on because there are many
family, friends, incidents and events to be
remembered and told, said Bond, whose iconic
character Rusty was inspired from his own life.
There is never going to be a day when I will
run out of material to write about, he added.
Bond has a big surprise for his fans, who
would soon be
reading a philosophical tale from the author.
Age has not taken a toll on my writing, but
it has taken a toll on my tummy, he said with
a hearty laugh.
Now I am writing something philosophical
because as you get older your views on life
change, he candidly admitted.

chose to follow their
passion and become
entrepreneurs.
Add to that, names
like Suzzane Khan,
Mana Shetty and
Shilpa Shetty.
Their fields are
different
-from
interior designing and
hairstyling to wellness
clubs and philanthropy
-- but to the curious
me, a common factor binds them all: the desire
to carve their own niche; a niche away from the
shadow of their husbands success stories.
Take, for instance, Gauri Khan, wife of
Bollywood badshah Shah Rukh Khan. A
devoted wife and mother, Gauris tryst with
interior designing happened at her house Mannat
itself, but she gave her hobby a professional
twist by collaborating with another star wife,
Suzzane, who is a qualified interior designer.
Suzzane, estranged wife of Hrithik Roshan,
has an Associate of Arts Degree in interior
design from Brooks College in Long Beach,
California. She gained hands-on experience
while working with her mothers interior firm,
and has worked on homes of celebrities like
Rani Mukerji and Priyanka Chopra.
She has her own brands, and together with
Gauri, she recently announced the launch of
their latest real estate project, Naira. A luxury
mansion project in Goa, it will involve 12
luxury villas which will have a limited edition
collection of furniture and accessories from
Suzzanes The Charcoal Project.
Earlier this year, Gauri also launched her
own design store named The Design Cell, much
to Shah Rukhs delight and pride.
Twinkle and Mana are also names to reckon
with when it comes to the interior design and
decor business.
Twinkle, star kid of Bollywoods first
superstar Rajesh Khanna, is married to tinsel
towns khiladi Akshay Kumar. Had she
wanted, she couldve sat back and enjoyed a life

half, too takes pride in

being
multi-faceted.
She not only runs an
interiors store, she
also designs homes,
runs an NGO called
Save The Children
India and even hosts a
fundraising exhibition.
In an interview
with Mana in 2010,
I remember asking
her whether being a
celebrity wife gives a
fillip to her endeavours.
She gave a promising
response: I am not
always Mana Shetty

I am also just Mana.

I have an identity of my own. At least I
think so and I believe in it. Thats why I keep
doing a lot of things on my own. Yes, I do have
Suniel 100 percent behind me, but I think it does
make a lot of difference when you do something
on your own and youre not just a celebritys
wife, she said.
True, that!
No wonder that when Adhuna Akhtar got
married to actor-producer Farhan Akhtar, she
didnt give up her first love -- hairstyling -- to
be a star wife. She is now a celebrity hairstylist
and even works for movies.
Lets count in Shilpa Shetty too! Agreed that
she herself is a big name in Bollywood, and who
managed to loot the hearts of UP and Bihar
with her beauty and moves, but marrying a
London-based businessman threw up an option
of leading a relaxed life. What did she choose?
Shilpa is now a film producer, co-owner
of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise
Rajasthan Royals, she runs the chain of luxury
wellness chain IOSIS, and even has her own
fitness DVDs. Her latest is a foray into the
jewellery business. Woah!
The inference here transcends the fact that
these women have stepped out from a zone
which could be comfortable and stress-free. It
lies in the fact that whether you have a wealthy
spouse, who is famous and popular, it cant take
away the individuality that a woman can carve
for herself -- not just in a relationship, but in the
outside world too!

The ultimate X-Men : A war for survival

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for
the survival of the species across two time periods
in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The
beloved characters from the original X-Men
film trilogy join forces with their younger selves
from the past, X-Men: First Class, in order to
change a major historical event and fight an epic
battle that could save our future.
Director Bryan Singer reinvented the comic
book genre as weve come to know it. With
the debut of the hugely successful X-Men in
the summer of 2000, Singer established nothing
less than a new creative aesthetic in his motion
picture adaptation of the beloved comics stories
and characters. That film was followed by
Singers even more successful X2 in 2003.
In X-Men: Days of Future Past, Singer
returns to the directors chair to expand upon his
vision for the X-Men universe. Its a huge and
provocative story propelled by richly conceived
characters. Producer Hutch Parker believes
it is a combination of Bryans love, attention
and respect for these characters that makes the
directors X-Men films so compelling.
Singers involvement with the franchise
from its infancy has bred close ties among
both the returning production and acting
teams. The new film reunites producer Lauren
Shuler Donner, who has been involved in
all the X-Men films; writer/producer Simon
Kinberg, who was a producer on X-Men: First
Class; award-winning director of photography
Newton Thomas Sigel, ASC, who has worked
on seven projects with Singer; Oscar-winning
production designer John Myhre, who created
the original X-Men world; and composer/editor
John Ottman.
Singer also reunites with the cast of the
original X-Men films, as well as the young cast
of First Class, on which he wrote the story
and served as a producer. From the original
trilogy, X-Men: Days of Future Past toplines
Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen,
and Halle Berry; and from First Class, it stars
Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael
Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult. It was a thrill
to cast these people, both in the original X-Men
films and also in First Class, Singer notes,
and at that time, several of them had little to no
experience with films of this scope. Hugh came
from a musical theater background. Jennifer
had done only small independent films like
Winters Bone. Over the years their careers
have evolved, gained momentum and garnered
tremendous recognition. The coming together
of the original family and the new one has been
exciting for us all.
Shuler Donner feels that the X-Men stories
rich and provocative themes drew Singer to that
universe. Bryan is very serious when it comes
to the X-Men. He has always understood that
the stories underlying themes dictated a realistic
treatment. The characters are flawed in ways in
which the audience can identify. For example,
Mystique wants to be proud of who she is, and
Beast is self-conscious about his mutant ability
and thus hides it. If the characters are grounded
in reality, we will believe they can fly or heal
or have extraordinary powers. All the other
elements of an event picture are there action,
comedy, visual effects but binding it together
is human conflict and struggle. Bryan is able
to find depth and meaning in these comic book
stories because he always pulls from within
himself to find the pathos of the characters and
the ethos of the world in which they live.
The biggest reason I wanted to return to
the X-Men, Singer confirms, is not just the

X-Men films to
this point, like time
travel, that have
blossomed in the
comic books for
many years. I think
with each movie
you need to do
something new, and
I can guarantee theres a lot of new stuff in Days
of Future Past.

N

ew Delhi, May 15 (IBNS): The Indian

Film Festival of Melbourne (IIFM) 2014,
presented by the Victorian Government, finally
came to a close on Sunday.
The 11-day celebration brought Melbourne
to a stop as people from all walks of life and
ethnicity joined in to enjoy the films and the
various events.
The festival was opened by Bollywood
superstar Amitabh Bachchan with the Australian
premiere of Sholay 3D.
Bachchan interacted with his fans and
answered questions about his films and career
with his inimitable wit and candour.
The 600-strong audience was left mesmerised
as he recited some of the most loved poems
written by his father. Bachchan was also
honoured by the Victorian government and the
festival at the glittering inaugural IFFM Awards
night at Melbournes iconic Princess Theatre.
The heritage listed theatre came alive with
roaring appreciation as the awards were given
out to the much-loved stars from Bollywood Bachchan (International Screen Icon award),
Kangana Ranuat (Best Actress for Queen), Ritesh
Batra (Best Indie Film - The Lunchbox) ,Farhan
Akhtar and Irrfan Khan (Best Actor for Bhaag
Milkha Bhaag and The Lunchbox), Rakeysh
Mehra (Best Director & Best Film - Bhaag
Milkha Bhaag) and Vijay Acharya & Avtar
Panesar (Peoples Choice Award - Dhoom 3).
The esteemed jury of the most respected
Australian and Indian film practitioners
comprising Jill Billcock (editor of Moulin Rouge,
Elizabeth, Romeo + Juliet) , Rajkumar Hirani,
Simi Garewal, Rajeev Masand, Phillip Noyce
(director of Salt, Rabbit Proof Fence, The Saint,
etc) and Suhasini Mani Ratnam were in full force
to cheer the winners as selected by them.
The evening came to a spectacular close
with Bachchan playfully taking a selfie with the
2000-strong enthralled audience behind.
The festivities continued with the ever popular
Bollywood Dance competition held at the iconic
Federation Square on May 4.
Teams and dancers from all over Australia
took part with Malaika Arora Khan, Vijay
Acharya (Dhoom 3) and Avtar Panesar (VP,
YRF) as judges. The winning dancers were of
various ethnicities which was very heart warming
and special for Malaika.
The masterclasses by Suhasini Mani Ratnam
and Konkona Sen Sharma, inspired young
filmmakers who asked questions about the
different crafts associated with cinema. Over 45
films, in 20 different languages, from 5 countries,
including 21 Australian premieres were screened
at the 2014 IFFM making it the largest festival of
Indian films in the southern hemisphere.
The festival finally came to a stunning close
with the Australian premiere of Gyonar Baksho,
directed by Aparna Sen and introduced by twotime National Award-winning actress Konkona
Sen Sharma.

They said that Whistle Baja, based on

the signature flute tune from the classic
Hero has become the flavor of the season,
so much so that listeners have got largely
hooked to it.
According to the officials, the song
has already crossed 2.2 million views on
YouTube.
Raat Bhar is being called the party song
of the year and has garnered 7 lakh+ views,
the officials said.
The Pappi Song has been getting great

reviews for being a melodious and uplifting

song, officials further informed.
Heropanti is the story of two young
conflicting protagonists, their battles with
society and their coming of age love story.
Directed by Sabbir Khan, Heropanti
stars debutants Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon.
Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, the movie
is slated to release on May 23.
