Aluminium 0.130 0.380 0.645 0.880 1.130 1.370 1.640 1.890
Brass 0.160 0.305 0.470 0.640 0.805 0.980 1.135 1.300

At the end of the experiment, we have achieved the aim of our objective that is to determine the
elastic modulus (E) of beam specimen by method of deflection. With the spirit in teamwork, we are able
to finish this experiment with flying colors. Unfortunately, there are some errors occur during the middle
of the experiment that makes the modulus of elasticity (E) value slightly different compared to the
theoretical value.
The modulus of elasticity that we get from the experiment is 69.29GPa for Brass, 91.259GPa for
Aluminium and 158GPa for Mild Steel. It was compared with the theoretical value that is 105GPa for
Brass, 70GPa for Aluminium and 200GPa for Mild Steel. It is about 34% error for Brass, 30.37% for
Aluminium and 21% for Mild Steel. As we can see, the comparison between the theoretical and
experimental is quite far. So, the problem/error must be eliminate in order to have a perfect experiment.
Firstly, we must identify the problems that occur during the experiment. We have detected that the beam
used in the experiment is already bent before we apply the load on the both sides of the beam. The beam
was bent maybe because of frequent used by other students that doing this kind of experiment. The beam
specimen is maybe experienced fall from high place that resulted it defect internally. In order to avoid this
kind of error, new specimen is used and is kept perfectly to avoid any kind of defects.
Secondly, the dial gauge used in the experiment is very sensitive to vibration. Even a little
disruption to the beam caused a big deflection reading that later will affect the modulus of elasticity (E)
for experimental value. The parallax error was also detected. This happen when we want to get the
reading of any gauge, the eye position is not in parallel position. So, to avoid this kind of problem from
happening again, all of the member must have an extra caution during the deflection is measured. Dont
simply vibrate any objects that support the experimental apparatus.
For another method to calculate the modulus of elasticity (E) from the experiment, direct
integration and Castigliones method can be used. This will able for us to determine the modulus of
elasticity (E) of the beam specimen in many different ways.
