Everyone is equally important and valued? Lets face it Sesame Street
lied to you, and your mum and it would seem, the good people behind
the hilarious show, Avenue Q that adorns our cover. But what fun that
disappointment has spawned. All the feel-good fun, sing-along tunes and
endearing puppet characters of the Street or the Muppets - but with the
rose-tint set to zero and acerbic humour set to eleven. Song titles like
Everyones a Little Bit Racist and If You Were Gay or The Internet is
for Porn might suggest something mean-minded but disguise a show
of limitless joy. Perhaps not for the really easily oended - but we know
YOUre not faint-hearted in the face of such things, eh? Go get some.
And then reect on the ridiculousness of racism and homophobia and
nationalism and Sesame Street and life. Or not

More intriguing creativity at IG:LU in CHURCH STREET this month, the show, which runs
from THU 19SUN 29 JUN going by the name IS IT ART? IS IT WORTH IT? THAT WILL
DO Its a showcase for two young, now Edinburgh-based artists, sculptor MICHAEL KAY
[1] and painter BETH CAREY [2].
Works on display include Kays minimalistic geometric sculptural forms, where he strips
away the unnecessary to focus on the conceptual with a sense of wit and irony. Careys
creations contrast and complement Kays with her investigations with paint on canvas. She
explores vivid colour and the natural movement of her chosen medium across a surface to
evoke a sense of the biological and uid.
Meanwhile over at IMAG, owers and representations thereof are the order of the day with
a couple of exhibitions:
KARL BLOSSFELDT: ART FORMS IN NATURE [3] (07 JUN05 JUL) reveals the work of a
German photographer (18651932) celebrated by the Surrealists and early modernists
for his pioneering close-up images of plants and ora. - NB: images for illustrative purposes only.
BUD TO BLOOM [4] (14 JUN12 JUL) is an exhibition of contemporary craft works inspired
by the natural world and life-cycle of plants, selected from the Crafts Council Collection.
The shapes, patterning, colours and materials of the works in the exhibition have been
inuenced by plants, owers and fruit, in playful, creative and experimental ways. This
exhibition includes leading UK glassmakers ANGELA JARMAN and NEIL WILKIN, textile
artist MICHAEL BRENNAND-WOOD, designer TORD BOONTJE, silversmiths DAVID
CLARKE, JUNKO MORI and LIN CHEUNG, and ceramicists FELICITY AYLIEFF, MARY
ROGERS and RICHARD SLEE (pic 4 - NB: item may not be part of show).
If all that gives you a hankering to do something yourself, there are a couple of workshops
in ower photography using your mobile phone on 14 JUNE, 10AM1PM & 18/25 JUNE,
79PM. Run in conjunction with Inverness College UHI and lead by MATT SILLARS, lecturer
in photography, the rst session will involve taking photos at Inverness Botanic Gardens
followed by two evenings at the colleges Longman Campus showing you how to enhance

Films about royalty are always going to play well even if theyre usually a load of old tosh.
And most people didnt hold out much hope for GRACE OF MONACO [5], even if NICOLE
KIDMANs alabaster beauty made her the perfect t in the role of Grace Kelly. Good things
are being whispered though, even if the Grimaldi family have withdrawn support and US
distributors are apparently getting cold feet. No such controversy surrounding the amiable
THE LOVE PUNCH [6], with PIERCE BROSNAN and EMMA THOMPSON (both seem to be
enjoying a critical revival) starring in a heist rom-com set in Paris, London and French Riviera.
What else this month? EDEN COURT have a fascinating-looking UK GREEN FILM FESTIVAL
as well as the NT LIVE ENCORE screening of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE
NIGHT-TIME and MANON LESCAUT live from the Royal Opera House. KAREN GILLAN (woop) re-
surfaces in Mike Flanagans OCULUS [7] a horror yarn about reunited siblings and a demonic
presence with many familiar tropes, but delivering the scary bits with some panache the
indie mentality behind it meaning its not just a compilation of special effects. And there are
multiple other pleasures to be had including ROBERT DOWNEY JR, SCARLET JOHANSSON,
SOFA (Modern Family) VERGARA, DUSTIN HOFFMAN and writer-director JON FAVREAU in CHEF

About The Bird.
In the world of childrens stories, JULIA DONALDSON is modern royalty, most notably
for writing The Gruffalo, but also for an astonishing output of consistently top-notch
creations. One such is a yarn called WHAT THE LADYBIRD HEARD [1], a colourful
farmyard adventure co-written with Lydia Monks. It may not be the best known of her
works, but its certainly one of the most enjoyable, as youll nd out if you head along
to the production at EDEN COURT on 08 & 10 JUN. The very fact that its in the Empire
demonstrates how popular its likely to be, so if you want to catch the story of the
eponymous ladybird trying to foil a couple of baddies trying to steal a cow, then book
your tickets sharpish.
Aimed at a rather older audience, though still under the family banner, is LA
TRAGEDIE COMIQUE [2] (EDEN COURT, 10 JUN), a one man show performed by Tim
Licata and directed by Ian Cameron. Written by Eve Bonfanti & Yves Hunstad with an
English translation from Licata himself, its the work of the excellent Plutt La Vie, a
Scottish touring theatre company with a European avour producing imaginative, vibrant,
entertaining and visually driven performances that tour throughout Scotland and abroad.
And whats it about? Well, something that, with shades of Samuel Becket, seems to be
about a character waiting for his Actor to be born and is apparently rather more fun and
rather less Legs Akimbo than you might imagine.
If you want your childish pleasures rather more straightforwardly visceral then youll be
hightailing it to STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 19 JUN for STICKY KIDS GO FOR GOLD
[3]. The ever-popular Sticky Kids team presents two performances of another action-
packed show for 27 year olds with a contemporary subject matter as Molly and Mac
are off to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Mac is all set to compete, but will he
win a medal? The action songs are all taken from the hugely popular Sticky Kids Fun
and Fitness range. The 10am show is now completely sold out but there are still a few

GoNORTH, the creative industries festival, is
back in Inverness on 04 & 05 JUN. We spoke to
the events director AMANDA MILLEN who told
us more and emphasised that EVERYBODYs
welcome - so check it out
I How did you rst get involved? Back in
2007 I was working for BBC Scotland and was on
secondment to HIE. I was born in Inverness so the
idea of working on something like GoNORTH was
very exciting. I hadnt heard of it before, but when I
found out what it was it was incredibly inspirational.
I How has the event changed since it rst came
permanently to Inverness? Its really over the
past three years that its changed, getting much
more of an international prole. Back then there
were maybe a couple of hundred delegates and
now theres over 1000. Weve got 120 speakers!
I The event usually coincides with RockNess,
but of course thats not happening this year. How
do you think thatll impact on visiting delegates?
I dont think it will. Up until a couple of years
ago we had our own stage there so its a shame
we dont have that platform for our acts, but
GoNORTH is strong enough now to stand on its
own and attract people to come up here.
I What are your best memories of previous
years? One speaker who was particularly brilliant
was Mark Jones from Wall Of Sound. Just to see
him walking around and meeting people was a lot
of fun. Then of course theres acts like Chvrches
who played here before
they were famous and
have gone on to be
successful.
I And what are you
most excited about
this year? Richard
Jobson should be
good. And a panel on
character and storytelling
with the author Denise
Mina. Weve also got
this thing called the
Gaming Playground
where developers will be
bringing computer games
and anyone, young or
old, can try them out.
I Some of the readers might not be aware that

anyone thinking of attending, give us an idea
of what to expect. Yeah, its really important
to get the message across that its OPEN TO
EVERYBODY AND ITS FREE. Its not like you have
to pay an extortionate fee and travel halfway
across the world to South By South West. Its right
on our doorstep and we want to attract people
from right across the Highlands and Islands as
well as people coming from further aeld.
I A bit more about yourself. Whats your
favourite record of all time? Ive got loads
associated with different decades of my life.
I loved Stairway To Heaven once, but I dont
listen to it now. At the moment Im a big Pharrell
Williams fan.
I And your favourite lm? Again there are so
many. I always like lms with a twist like The Usual
Suspects and Lucky Number Slevin.
I Any nal words? EVERYBODY COME ALONG.
Theres something really inspirational happening
right here in Inverness that we should be very
proud of. Lets celebrate it.

listen to it now. At the moment Im a big Pharrell
Williams fan.

Suspects and Lucky Number Slevin.

Kudos to the folk at Bogbain Farm for kicking of the festival season last month in ne style
with Brew At The Bog. And theyre looking to keep the momentum going with NORTHERN
ROOTS FESTIVAL INVERNESS (28 May01 JUN) an event which used to take place entirely
at the farm, but this year nds itself spread around venues in Inverness itself, with the
likes of RACHEL SERMANNI [1], AOIFE ODONOVAN, WILL POUND, BELLA HARDY, THE
DIRTY BEGGARS, ADAM HOLMES, BLUE ROSE CODE, FINDLAY NAPIER, ANNA MASSIE
and MIKE VASS appearing at EDEN COURT and HOOTANANNY, plus a ceilidh at BOGBAIN
to round things off. More: northernrootsfestival.com
Its a great month for lovers of all things classical. Not only is there a chance to take in
Scottish Operas acclaimed production of MADAMA BUTTERFLY (see theatre pages for
more), there are also appearances by several noted ensembles. STRATHPEFFER PAVILION
is particularly well served, with the HIGHLAND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA performing works
by Beethoven, Saint-Saens, Copland and more on 01 JUN, then the SCOTTISH CHAMBER
ORCHESTRA [2] making their annual visit on 25 JUN with a programme that includes
pieces by Schubert, Haydn and Mendelssohn.
More classical treats (and indeed more Mendelssohn) at NAIRN COMMUNITY CENTRE
on 08 JUN when the FEJES STRING QUARTET [3], one of Scotlands premier chamber
ensembles will play an engaging programme of old Felix as well as Mozart and
Shostakovich. And, on 14 JUN at ARDROSS COMMUNITY HALL, visionary guitar virtuoso
SIMON THACKER and the outstanding young Polish cellist JUSTYNA JABLONSKA [4]
present KARMANA, combining elements from classical, jazz, Indian, Flamenco, Celtic and
Balkan musical traditions.
Still on the Balkan tip, the BUDAPEST CAF ORCHESTRA [5] come to EDEN COURT on
11 JUN. Inspired by the music of the Balkan gypsies, the playlist ranges from tragic and
evocative ancient Jewish melodies to traditional Romanian or Russian dances, Hungarian
Czardas, Ukrainian folk songs and much more, including many of the musicians own
electrifying compositions. Rather wonderful.
A word too for the folk duo of MARIT FLT & RONA WILKIE [6] (EDEN COURT, 04 JUN)
who draw upon their geographical roots to explore the commonalities between Scandi-
and Scottish Highland tunes. Expect all manner of musical styles, brought to life by
Ronas ddle virtuosity and Marits breath-taking mastery of the versatile ltmandola, an
instrument whose very name intrigues
YOLANDA BROWN [7] is a virtuoso on a rather more traditional instrument, the saxophone
and following a hugely successful visit here last year shes back at EDEN COURT on 19
JUN, no doubt demonstrating why shes being lauded as one of the nest new talents in
British jazz.

Ken Kelman: Ironic irony. . .
I know weve touched on this
subject before, but every time
I hear Alanis Morissettes
Ironic it rankles me that there
is nothing really ironic about it.
And Ive heard it again recently
and the ranklings back with
a vengeance. black ies in
your Chardonnay .. only spoons
in the drawer when youre
desperately seeking a knife -
these scenarios are not irony,
theyre Sods Law at best .. or
as most of us would
have it just life.
This time though Ive
started to wonder if
maybe Alanis originally
had genuinely ironic
situations in mind but
due to poetic constraints
and the need to t the
whole thing into a four
minute pop song these
were so seriously edited
that the irony was lost.
What I propose to do
therefore is to try to
re-create some of the
original situations

Lets start with the line in
the chorus: Its like rain on your
wedding day. Imagine the chap
in question, the Groom if you will,
is a TV weather forecaster .. but
not a very good one. Every day he
diligently forecasts the weather.
Every day he gets it wrong. He
cant help himself, he plugs the
gures into the algorithms, runs
the predictions on his computer,
stands condently in front of his
weather map, tells everyone itll
be dry, calm and sunny - next
day theres a blizzard and force
ten gales. The Friday before his
Saturday wedding the software is
suggesting rain for the next day,
rather than being disheartened
our hero is well pleased, he knows
hes no good as a forecaster, he
knows he always gets it wrong ..
thats why hes smiling in front of
the camera at six oclock as he
condently predicts rain on his
wedding day. Next day, outside the
church at three in the afternoon,
the heavens break - for the rst
time ever hed got the forecast
right - ironic isnt it.
Next: its meeting the man of
my dreams .. then meeting his
beautiful wife .. Im imagining
here that the lady in question
runs a computer dating agency.
Shes a generally impulsive,
devil-may-care sort of character,
who at 43 is thinking it might be
time she settles herself down and
gets married. Trouble is shes not
sure if its ethical to use the data
gathered by her own web site to
track down her perfect man. Of
course shes already done this
and found someone whos so
unequivocally right for her that
shes beginning to think computer
matching might really, actually,
work. Shes swithering though,
normally her impulsive nature
would ensure shed met the
man by now but well, you know -
theres still the ethics. Hang it
she thinks .. and quickly arranges
a social-evening for two weeks
hence, to which she invites all
her subscribers - shell snare him
there!
Two weeks elapse and
across a crowded room,
over the gentle murmur
of conversation and clink
of champagne glasses,
she spots her quarry. And
he spots her. Their eyes
meet and his smile shows
hes clearly attracted
to her, after 20 years in
the dating industry, she
can just tell. They move
toward each other, in her
mind, the attraction in
his eyes growing by the
step .. I should have
done this weeks ago she
thinks. And indeed never
a truer word was thought
as he introduces her to his new
wife and its like looking in a
mirror. Theyd met through the
web site only 10 ten days before
and in a whirl-wind romance of
almost unimaginable spontaneity,
married just twenty-four hours
ago. Theyd come to thank her
and cancel their subscriptions.

As for a no-smoking sign on
your cigarette break .. I guess
that could be ironic simply if you
worked on a tobacco plantation..

Walk the streets of Inverness and youll notice that somewhere amid the leisurewearntats
homogeneity theres a growing band of folk developing an individual, creative fashion style. Good
news then that this month sees the launch of HIGHLANDS FASHION WEEK [1] running from
0207 JUN with a whole week of workshops taking place at IG:LU in CHURCH ST. Free of charge
and completely open to the public, the workshops will offer advice on many different areas of the
fashion industry including hair, make-up and catwalk modelling.
At the end of the week on Sat 07 Jun theres a FASHION SHOW FINALE at Inverness Caledonian
Thistle hosted by NICKY MARR. Tickets are priced at 8, with a donation from every ticket
sale going towards HFWs partner charity Highland Facilitators Team which deals with autistic

Fashion used to play a major part in the creative industries get-together GoNORTH which now
seems to have found a natural home here, taking place this year on 04 & 05 JUN. This time round
though, matters couture are taking something of a back seat with only one seminar about such
things. Emphasis is again mainly on music with performances at venues all around town from
the likes of BROKEN RECORDS, NEON WALTZ, MIAOUX MIAOUX and more, a discussion with ex-
Skid RICHARD JOBSON and plenty of talks about various aspects of the music biz. Theres also
a strong lm-makers strand with almost 40 submitted shorts being screened and this year, for

Brazil is not the only place hosting a World Cup this month theres another one to enjoy
closer to home in the form of the UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP at FORT WILLIAM on
07 & 08 JUN. The two day festival of mountain biking on a staggeringly impressive course
is historically recognized as one of the best two-wheel events in the world, attracting top
athletes from more than 25 nations and this years staging is bound to impress. Its a
ne spectator sport too so if you want to nd out more, head to fortwilliamworldcup.co.uk
Fort William is going to be pretty busy that weekend as on 08 JUN it also hosts THE GREAT
GLEN RALLY. Building on the success of last years rally, this Highland Car Club event lets
you enjoy, for 70, a days motoring fun with scenic non-competitive road sections, special

Back on two wheels and building up the excitement ahead of the Tour De France at the
beginning of July, the Highlands hosts the CAIRNGORM MOUNTAIN CYCLOSPORTIVE on
14 JUN. Its the UKs highest event on a public road (632m) and the routes (theres a
choice of two) take you from the heights of Cairngorm through the north of the Spey Valley.
This lesser known area has stunning scenery and quiet roads, which should make for
quite a ride though apparently the Tour Of Britain organisers still refuse to acknowledge its

Finally, more physical exertion celebrated at the NAIRNSHIRE CHALLENGE (22 JUN), a
30-mile duathlon on foot and bike in which competitors cover 12.3 miles on rough tracks
through the grouse moors of Cawdor Estate, before changing onto bikes at Drynachan for

Theres a real sense of verve to the programming at EDEN COURT these days, reecting a
growing self-condence that ensures a consistently high quality of offerings doing justice
to what its easy to forget is a remarkable artistic venue. As if to emphasise this admirable
swagger and rmly rebutting any notions of parochialism that hang rather too heavy in the
air these days, this month sees the venue looking across the Atlantic to present some
glorious American creations.
AVENUE Q [1] (17 & 18 JUN) had the critics hollering accolades to the heavens when it
opened on Broadway and holds the rare distinction of winning a trio of TONY awards (the
US version of the Oliviers) for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.
The story of a college graduate moving to New York serves a starting point for a riotous
production involving Muppet-esque puppets, hilarious songs and even a little politics,
both personal and public. Its penned by Robert Lopez, co-creator of the West End and
Broadway smash-hit the Book of Mormon and like that one it manages to combine a
delicious irreverence with some very well made points (as the singalongs Everyones a
Little Bit Racist, If You Were Gay and The Internet is for Porn demonstrate). Rarely has
the puppetry/showtune interface been so successfully explored. Unmissable.
When it comes to Stateside theatre, SAM SHEPARD is generally regarded as that nations
most inventive and exciting playwright, matched only perhaps by David Mamet, but with
a far more varied and cherishable body of work behind him, not to mention a rather ne
parallel career as both actor and songwriter (hes written songs with Bob Dylan and played
banjo on Patti Smiths cover of Nirvanas Smells Like Teen Spirit).
Much of that is explored in the ambitious CHORALE: A SAM SHEPARD ROADSHOW [2]
running at EDEN COURT on 12 & 13 JUN comprised of three plays, two lms, a night of
music and a workshop. Phew.
Visceral early play The Holy Ghostly and the poetic monologue The War in Heaven, make
up the Thu double bill, whilst the following day kicks off with a 2pm workshop on the
collaborative theatre of Shepard with Joseph Chaikin, centred on a screening of award-
winning director Shirley Clarkes lm Tongues (16+), led by director Simon Usher. Later,
the double bill features the little seen lm version of Savage/Love (also directed by Clarke)
followed by a live performance of The Animal (You), a journey through the landscape of
Shepards music. After all that theres a solo live music performance by Herons! (aka Ben
Kritikos) who provides live music for the performances and whose work is reminiscent of

Theres an abundance of great stuff at EDEN COURT this month and dramatic productions
dont come much more enduring than THE MOUSETRAP [1] (23-28 JUN). The lm rights
were sold when Agatha Christies archetypical murder mystery was rst taken to the stage,
but only on condition that a movie couldnt be made until the run ended. Sixty years later the
studios are still twiddling their thumbs. The longest running show of any kind in the history
of British theatre - with over 25,000 performances-is now going on tour and stopping off up
here to deliver what remains a thriller whose elements still echo across the work of so many
thriller writers since. Dont miss it, but agree to the traditional promise audiences must make
not to give away the ending.
Another timeless classic is Puccinis MADAMA BUTTERFLY [2] and youll get to enjoy
possibly the most memorable-tune packed opera ever written if you head along to SCOTTISH
OPERAs production on 05 &07 JUN. The story of Cio-cio-Sans heartbreaking love affair with
a US naval ofcer never fails to move and this revival of Sir David McVicars 2000 production
is a particularly impressive staging.
An always welcome visitor to these parts is the MICHAEL CLARK DANCE COMPANY and
ANIMAL/VEGETABLE/MINERAL [3] (13 JUN) promises to be as intriguing (and elusive)
as always. Theres music from Scritti Politti and Sex Pistols in Clarks history of close
collaboration with contemporary artists, designers and musicians. And bodies bending every
which way.
Its not just inside Eden Court that all the action is happening, as the venue presents a
couple of fascinating looking events this month in spaces hitherto unused for theatre. Like
INVERNESS TENNIS & SQUASH CLUB, the venue on 11 JUN for SQUISH SQUARED [4]
presented by Room 2 Manoeuvre. Part of the Commonwealth Games culture strand its a
humorous contemporary dance duet about the competitive streak men have, so a squash
court is the perfect location to examine such impulses. You watch through the glass and
after the show get the opportunity to whack a few squash balls.
Another seemingly unlikely, but actually perfectly apt venue is SO COCO on the corner of
CHURCH ST and the HIGH ST, where you can see INDIAN PETERS COFFEE HOUSE [5] on
27 JUN. It tells the true, extraordinary story of Scotsman Peter Williamson (1720 1799) who
was kidnapped in Aberdeen, sold as a labourer to a farmer in Pennsylvania and then captured
and enslaved by native Americans before returning to Scotland and, as you do, opened his own
coffee house in Edinburgh, ran a private post ofce and invented a submarine for commuting
across the Firth of Forth to Fife. Sometimes truth really is stranger than ction.

Okay, so maybe one these beauties from top Scottish award winning milliner, may

Graduating with a First Class Hons degree from Glasgows Metropolitan University,
William wasted no time in setting up his own business. In 2008 he won the UK-
wide Creative 30 competition a project set up to discover the UKs most talented Creative 30 Creative 30
creative young people. Following this, he opened his Glasgow city centre studio
and showroom in January 2009. William won Accessory Designer of the Year at the Accessory Designer of the Year Accessory Designer of the Year
Scottish Fashion Awards in both 2010 and 2012.

As I sat at my window seat at the
Contrast Brasserie, with its fabulous
view of the River Ness, a story came
to mind that I had read a couple of
months ago about how this is the
rst year in over 90 years that there
have been no o cial sightings of
our friend Nessie. Not since 1925 has
she been so mysterious - she has not
been spotted in 18 months, which is
a bit sad because who wants to live
in a world where there is no Loch
Ness Monster? However, it got me
thinking that maybe everyone is
looking in the wrong place. After all,
the very rst recorded sighting of the
monster was in the river not the
loch. Granted this was way back in
565AD and it was by a Viking who
were famously rather fond of the old
grog but apparently Columba had
banished Nessie from the Loch after
she inadvertently killed someone, so
the poor love was hiding out in the
river, we presume.
What has all of this got to do with
my restaurant review? I hear you ask.
Well it occurs to me as I contemplate
the river from this gorgeous spot,
that maybe there is a job going to
be the o cial River Nessie hunter
which would involve me sitting
at the window in this sumptuous
restaurant, being brought delicious
food while I look out for the secretive
monster? I am willing to negotiate
on salary.
However let me get down to
business because what drew me
to Contrast was not the excellent
monster spotting opportunities but
the 10.95 / 2 course or 13.95 / 3
course lunch menu. It is a pleasant
stroll from town along the river bank
(if it werent such a drizzly day) and
it cannot be denied that the view
across the river to Eden Court is
exceptional.
I had phoned ahead to ask if the
one vegetarian choice on the lunch
menu could be expanded upon to
give us some choices and when we
arrived I was delighted to be told by
our very welcoming server, Katie,
that the chef had devised another
vegetarian option on the lunch
menu and that we were also free to
order from the evening menu.
So, my starter was a Pea Panna
Cotta With Mint and Crme
Frache. Of course we are all more
familiar with the panna cotta as a
dessert so this savoury one was a
rst for me and I didnt quite know
what to expect. It arrived looking
like a fabulous cocktail and did not
disappoint. Gorgeous pea avour
with a soft, creamy consistency,
topped o with a hint of potato
salad and watercress with a powerful
dressing to balance the subtlety of
the dish. Quite a bold dish I thought,
with a defying your expectations
quality.
My dining partner plumped for
the Cream of Broccoli Soup
emphasis on the cream rather than
the broccoli pale in both colour
and avour, delicately augmented
by a little herb oil and nigella seed.
Teetering a little between rened
and dull.
My main course was a Roast

Cauliower Risotto. This was the
extra dish put on by the chef and we
were delighted they hadnt resorted
to that tired pasta with a tomato
sauce standby. It was a true risotto
consistency-wise and beautifully
seasoned. Everything that is good
about a cauliower cheese dish was
encapsulated in this dish and I loved
it. Body, bite and plenty of avour.
My partner chose the Gnocchi dish
from the evening menu - though
this was an adapted version and did
not contain identical ingredients
listed on the menu - with more of a
avoured potato dumpling than a
traditional gnocchi (though they are
much of a muchness). However, said
dumplings were deliciously herby,
light, soft and enjoying the company
of some very vivid plate-mates.
There were lots of elements to this
dish, all presented very strikingly.
Naked roasted carrots standing like
sentinels around the dish, super tasty
vegetable crisps strewn in wanton
abandon, the dumplings sensibly
holding the whole thing together
and then there were the pickled
walnuts as brazen as can be. I
am not a fan of the pickled walnut
but for my dining partner it was
all his Christmasses come at once.
This provided explosive pockets of
intense sweet-sour amongst the
earthily real avours on oer from
the carrots, crisps and puree and
made for an unusual and bold dish.
There seemed a recurring theme of
simple, back-to-nature avours -
further reinforced by the side dish of
vegetables arriving with the mains
- more of the naked, lightly roasted
carrots, steamed broccoli and roasted
polenta - full marks there.
Desserts did not disappoint either.
I had Strawberry Panna Cotta
with Lemon Curd and New
Season Berries. It looked rather
pretty in its glass and we were back
on more familiar ground with a
sweet strawberry panna cotta. Richly
creamy, the delicate strawberry
avour was complimented rather
than overpowered by the lemon
curd. The berries were a perfectly
concentrated blend of tart and
sweet. Expectations were exceeded
always a good thing.
My dining partner chose again from
the evening menu Chocolate
Fondant. 70% Bitter Chocolate,
Rich Toee with Malt Ice Cream.
You will be possibly familiar with this
dessert, the one where you have to
wait 15 minutes because it has be
be cooked at just the right time and
temperature to get that outrageously
gooey innard. In my experience the
dish has sometimes not been worth
the delay but on this occasion I
am happy to report that the wait
was rewarded. Presented in a
striking dish with a generously sized
chocolate fondant sat on a caramel
sea of toee sauce. The ice cream,
with a side of malt(eser) shavings,
was supremely creamy, more like a
clotted cream, which always gets my
vote. Indulgence pure and simple -
like having your back, feet and ears
all massaged at the same time.
What a very pleasant lunch and
excellent value. The service was really
great, a very friendly server who
was genuinely interested to know
if the veggie dishes put on by the
chef had satised and we did not
feel rushed at all. The subtle real-life
savoury avours may prove lacking in
repower for some - but these were
quality ingredients being allowed
to speak for themselves, a bold and
interesting statement.
As they have also given me a loyalty
card, I daresay I will be tempted to do a
bit of River Nessie spotting again soon.
