OPERATIONAL INSTRUCTION OF THE MONOCHROMATOR

INSTALLATION OF THE LAMP

1. Place the Light source upright so that the arc lamp is in vertical position.
2. Remove the screws (Wider screws that can be unscrewed with hand).
3. Pull out the lamp slowly, vertically and very carefully. Caution should be maintained not to let the lamp
touch the walls of the casing. This may damage/ break the lamp. Place the lamp inverted so that it would
rest vertically.
4. Red color wires indicate +ve and black indicates ve and should be connected to the anode and the
cathode respectively.
5. The positive (anode) is indicated on the lamp by a + mark. Remove the top screw to which ve (black
wire) is connected. Rotate the lamp slowly anticlockwise so as to separate the lamp from the casing.
6. Install the Lamp by rotating the lamp clockwise with the +ve marked side into the lamp holder of the
casing to which the +ve (Red) wire is connected.
Follow the rest of the steps follow in reverse direction from 5 to 2
Precaution:
1. Never touch the envelope of the lamp. This would damage the lamp. If at all cleaning of the envelope is
required use dry tissue paper used for lens cleaning. Dont use any liquid solution for cleaning.
2. Be very careful in connecting the wires. Red wire should always be connected to the anode and the
black wire should always be connected to cathode. Any error would lead to severe damage to the
instrument and the user.
POWER SOURCE
The front panel of the power source contains indicator for Watt, Current, Voltage. Optical feedback probe is
required only when very high accuracy of the light intensity is required during the measurement. For normal
use this is not connected. There is a power control knob and also a red and green push button switch.
The back panel contains +ve and ve cables indicated in red and black. It also contains a 4 pin cable
meant for controlling and power supply to the fans used for cooling the light source.
1. Before switching on the power supply ensure that the +ve and the -ve cable connection to the lamp
source is made appropriately. Also ensure that the 4 pin cable is connected. This is very very important;
otherwise there would serious damage to the instrument and the user.
2. Put the display mode to watt.
3. Adjust the power knob to 40-50% of the maximum. This is approximately between 140 180 watt. This is
required to give enough potential to start the arc lamp when the power is switched on. A very high or low
potential would damage the arc lamp.
4. Power on the system by switching on the power supply at the back panel of the power supply.
5. Check the rotation of the cooling fan of the power supply and the Lamp casing unit.
6. The lamp should be started after 2 min (approx) from the switching ON of the power supply. This is done
by pushing once and releasing immediately the green push button.
7. Keep the system in this state for 5 min (approx) so as to give sufficient time for the light source to
stabilize.
8. Adjust the lamp power slowly (Important) by rotating the power knob. Maintain the lamp wattage in the
range 220 Watt (min) to 280 (Max) which is about 80% of the rated wattage of the lamp. Using the lamp at
its full wattage would damage it.
9. Wait 5 min (approx) again to allow stabilization of the lamp power before performing the experiment.
Caution: Dont look into the white light with direct eyes.
MONOCHROMATOR:
1. There is no switch to power on the Monochromator (MC). Plug in the power supply cord directly and the
green light glows indication that the MC is powered on. Connect the USB cable.
2. The slit width can be adjusted using the screw provided at the opening for light entrance and the light
output. When not in use shut down completely the slit and close the shutter to avoid any dust particles
entering the panel and blocking the grating (Important).
3. Earthing wire should be connected at the appropriate provision in the MC.
Caution: With the top panel open dont speak near the MC. The split from the mouth may block the grating.
Cleaning of the grating is a very difficult process and can only be done using a blower.
INSTALLATION OF THE SOFTWARE.
Details are given in the additional leaflet supplied by the vendor.
SOFTWARE OPERATION:
1. Double click the shortcut on the Desk top.
2. Press Initialize. Sound is heard in the MC. When the initialization is complete, the sound stops.
3. Click the setup. In the popup panel click the Auto grating.
4. Position implies the wavelength. Input appropriate wavelength in the visible range and click Set. Check
if the output light of the MC corresponds to the input wave length. For example an input of 632nm
wavelength would give the output of Red light.
5. Read position confirms the wavelength set.
SWITCHING OFF THE WHITE LIGHT SOURCE AND THE MONOCHROMATOR:
1. Before switching off the MC, Set the position to Zero by giving an input of 0.0 and then clicking Set.
Confirm the position set from the Position Read. Close the software.
2. Switch off the MC by removing the plug in.
3. Press the Lamp OFF switch (Red) in the front panel of the power supply. Press once and release
immediately. Dont stay.
4. Make the power adjustment to zero by rotating the power knob in the front panel.
5. Dont switch of the power supply (in the back panel) immediately.
6. Keep the system running for at least 45 60 minutes. This would allow sufficient time for controlled
cooling of the lamp. Direct environment cooling would damage the lamp.
7. Manually switch off the power supply after then.
Note: Once switched off, there should be minimum 45mins to 1 hour gap before the next experiment can
be started.
