INTRODUCTION
Do you often get frustrated when you realise that youve forgotten to lock your doors? Do
you know that improperly locked doors can pose a huge safety issue to you, your loved ones
ad your property?(Electronic Security Association, 2014) In fact, we have identified this
issue and we not only acknowledged the extent of the problem, but we also came up with a
solution. MAXIMA is a door locking smart electronic set that would truly blow your mind. Its
the ultimate solution that will turn trouble-free door-locking and guaranteed home security
into a reality!
3.BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
Our vision is to simplify door-locking and facilitate prompt reaction to threats to house
safety for all home owners around the world.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Electronic door-locking devices industry
Industry: electronic door-locking devices industry. The industry is electronic door-locking
devices industry (contact-less locking).
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: Low Buyers dont have a lot of choices. Currently, there are
only about 5-8 providers of electromechanical door-
locks.(Ha,2013)
Supplier power: Low Raw materials such as metal strips, wires and
hardwares etc. for electronic locks are relatively
attainable. There are also many suppliers for software
technologies who could work on developing the
software necessary for electronic locks to work with
an app.

3

3
Threat of new entrants: Low The creation of electronic door locks incoporates
intricate designs of new softwares, including unique
commincation channels between phone and lock.
Both technology and time are required to integrate
existing door systems and have new feature
initiatives. Therefore, currently there are strong entry
barriers. (Ha, 2013)
Threat of substitutes: High Older customers or the neophobic might prefer
traditional locks and keys over electronic locks. There
are many different types of traditional locks which are
currently used by the majority of society.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low There are about 5 to 7 existing competitors on the
market right now , each of which provides a
electronic/electromechanical lock.Those products are
new and many are still under going developments.
Companies compete by offering different designs.
Overall, the rivalry among existing competitors is fairly
low given the number of competitors and their
relatively differentiated functions.(Derene, 2013).
Overall attractiveness of the industry: In general, the electronic door-locking devices
industry is an attractive industry to enter. 4 of the 5 Porters forces are low. The industry has
low buyer power due to limited choices andlow supplier power the amount of technology
and raw materials are easily attainable. Threat of new entrance and rivalry among existing
competitors are also low. Only the high threat of substitute is unfavourable, which is due to
peoples attachment with traditional keys and locks. However, this can be overcome by the
convience and new feature iniatives of our product, which would become a competitive
advantage for us. Overall, the industry is attractive.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs

MAXIMAprovides convience to forgetful customers and safety assurance to all homeowners.
Therefore, we will target a wide segment of the market. Firstly, in terms of convience, busy
commuters, working professionals who have limited time will be benefited. Secondly,
anxious housewives or senior people who prefer more assurance would be attracted by the
multi-functions of the product. It would give them a sense of security as well as provide
them with convience.By ensuring that all doors are locked, MAXIMA would significantly
decrease burgulary events and achieve our vision, to benefit all home owners around the
world. (Metropolitan Police, 2010)
3.4 The Product and Service
The product consists of a mobile app and a gadget. The gadget uses sensors and chips to
enable remote control of all the doors of the owners house. It also sends messages to the
owner via its corresponding app on the smart phone in event of an intrusion. The app
provides the owner with access to other house security systems whenever and whereever,
to monitor the house (i.e authenticate risk by checking the security camera tape
immediately after alert message has been sent). MAXIMA significantly reduces time spent
on locking doors in the house, minimises risk of being burgled and also enables fast reaction
to burgulary, increasing chances of recovery to valuables.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Software engineering is vital for the products success. A supplier such as Beyond Services
Limited would have the electronical technology expertise to be able to develop, programme
the software, enhance flow and provide constant updates to the product. Another supplier
such as LG Electronics could manufacture the hardware part and implant data transmitters
within the gadget to enable data-syncing between the two parts.
A partner could be advertising agencies such as Fairfax Media NZ who provides publications
and websites throughout New Zealand. By partnering with them, our product will be able to
reach more people.(Fairfax Media, 2013) LG electronics can also be a potential partner. As
they manufacture many electronic products, MAXIMA could negotiate with them to become

a potential add-on product for consumers. This would allow MAXIMA to increase publicity.
Sales could increase as the product becomes more attractive and reliable to customers.
3.6 Strategy: Differentiation
The competitive scope is broad as MAXIMA targets all house owners. Household safety is a
priority for most people and the tendancy to forget locking doors also plagues many, so
both the convience and safety assurance .
MAXIMAs cost strategy is high cost. Currently, as an innovative new product, its cost of
production is high due to a large amount of labour, time and technologysuch asextensive
software engineering are required. A focus on quality would be emphazised, and will be the
competitive advantage.
The overall strategy is therefore Differentiation.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Technology Development (R&D)
The most important value chain activity for this business is Technology development.
Technology development is crucial for the business to succeed as thats what delivers value
to customers and forms the business competitive advantage. The value chain activity aligns
with MAXIMA visionas well as its competitive strategy, differentiation. R&D allows MAXIMA
to constantly improve its quality in order to guarantee convenience and safety. Therefore,
technology development is an important value chain activity that allows MAXIMA to deliver
value to customersmaximise their satisfaction, and in turn generate profits.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. LOCK PROTOTYPING PROCESS
