CLUBS AND SOCIETIES IN OUR
COMMUNITY
INTRODUCTION
Clubs and Societies offer a variety of benefits and help to bring all likes of people together
who share the same interests. At the University of Auckland they offer over 120 Clubs and
Socieities to Students and Staff.
In the Auckland Community they are currently advertising 438 Clubs and Societies. These
clubs can help to bring people together and give everyone the chance to make friends. Clubs
are a great way to make friends and acquaintances with people who share the same
interests as us. The problem is, people lack awareness of the availability to these Clubs and
Societies on offer. Our solution is to create an application for Mobile phones called
ClubsApp which will promote Clubs and Societies in our community. It helps to consolidate
all Clubs/Societies/Group information into one place. Retailers will be able to use the
application to follow market trends or sell certain products to target markets that have been
established and found through ClubsApp.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To provide a universal tool that helps bring communities together through expressed and
related interests.

3.2 Industry Analysis: Community Group Industries
Industry: Community Group industry
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: Low Buyer power is low in this industry as this solution
is unique and other similar competitors havent
developed softwawre as specific yet.
Supplier power: High Supplier power is high as the ClubsApp concept
has not been successfully executed by other
competitors, so it will be the only provider.
Threat of new entrants: Low Threat of new entrants is low in this industry as
there are few alternatives that assist in
consolidating Club and Society information to
instigate people in the community to use Clubs
and Societies. Software is low cost but hard to
create.
Threat of substitutes: High Threat of substitutes is high as most clubs and
societies have information available to the public.
These can be obtained on websites or in the
phonebook.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low Rivalry among exisiting competitiors is low
because there arent many other competitors in
the Community group industry.

4
Overall attractiveness of the industry: Despite the amount of software developers in New
Zealand, there is no current softawre available that is specific to ClubsApp which gives it a
competitive advantage in its specialisation.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
Studying at the University of Auckland and other Universitities in New Zealand can be a very
stressful experience. Having friends to pass the time by and to study with is great to keep
stress under control. The services that ClubsApp has on offer allows students and also
people out in the community to find an available community group specific to their
interests/hobbies and lets them join the club at the touch of a button.
3.4 The Product and Service
The ClubsApp will provide simple access for all users. The users can sign-up to ClubsApp, and
in the biography section of their individual profiles they can certify their interests and
hobbies. Automatically, the ClubsApp services can help to find recommendations of Clubs
and Socieities that meet the interests and hobbies. Also, using location services, ClubsApp
can help track your location and provide details of the Clubs and Socieites in the area.
For users looking at using the ClubsApps services to find a Club to join, they can access an
interface with:
a. Clubs and Societies in the area
b. Information on these Clubs and Societies (location, meeting dates, meeting times,
current affairs, pictures, Club Managers, participating members)
c. Application tabs to join Clubs
d. Profile editing (personal details, interests and hobbies) to help specify different Club
Searches
e. Also, Clubs and Societies outside the area
For users who are looking at starting their own Clubs, or advertising an exisiting Club they
can access an interface with:
a. All the same options that users who are looking for clubs to join

b. Club page creation
c. Club page editing
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Seeing as ClubsApp is a software development company, no raw material suppliers will be
needed. However, copyright tools will be needed to aid the application maintenance and
creation such as JAVA.
Partners would be the distributors like Apple App Store, Google Play etc. Also, partners will
include the retail companies that want to use ClubsApp information to keep up with market
trends.
3.6 Strategy: Differentiation (High Cost)
The market is considered to be narrow as is focuses on Club and Societies in a community
but the customer-base is broad. Seeing as Clubs and Societies can be started about
anything.
ClubsApp offers a unique resource and addresses customers specific needs. The way it is set
up, provides protection over substitutes which creates a higher entry to barrier as buyers
have less power to find alternatives.
The overall strategy is therefore Differentiation (high cost)
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Technology Development (and R&D)
The most important value chain activity for this business is Technology Development.
Technology Development would be the most important value chain activity for this business
as ClubsApp is a software product and service. This would make the application efficient for
customers and partners as the required level of technology is met to help and minimise all
errors pertaining to the application.
3.8 Business Processes

6

6
3.8.1. CLUB RECOMMENDATION AND JOINING PROCESS This business process is where users
open the app and are prompted with recommendations of Clubs or Societies they could be
interested in.
The recommendations are made from the interests/hobbies the user has stated on their
profile biography. If the user has not stated any interests or hobbies on their profile
biography, they are given recommendations of Clubs that are generaing a lot of interest in
their area.
The process shows the user opening up a club page that catches their interest, then the
decision to whether they ask to join the club or not. If Yes! they are welcomed into the
Club. Clubs may have requirements for users to meet before joining.
If the user doesnt find the Club interesting, feels the information provided is inadequate or
has a querie regarding experience in/about the Club, there will be a Feedback or Querie
button which they can use to share their thoughts with us. (not included in process model:
Feedback goes straight to our System Monitoring and Maintenance process services)

3.8.2. FEEDBACK AND QUERIE PROCESS - The feedback and querie process is a simple task for
users. If they have an experience they would like to share, they can use the Feedback and
Querie section on the application. If it was a negative experience, it will be reported to our
System Monitoring & Maintenance & Update services where this problem can be further
investigated and solved. The Feedback and Querie service can also be used if a user
encouters a problem with ClubsApp.
Application Reviews can also be made. Users will be able to give reviews on ClubsApp, or
reviews on the Clubs within ClubsApp. For example, the Hamburger Making Society have
inadequate information provided on their Club Page. The service will allow users to inform
us that the Hambuger Making Society needs to update their information.
