Multi-million dollar Deakin University Launch draws Hollywoods finest
Hollywood heavyweights Hugh Jackman and Rachel Griffiths will be assisting in the multi-million
dollar launch of the Deakin University Centre for the Moving Image (DUCMI) at the Geelong
Waterfront Campus on May 20 starting at 9am.
The launch of DUCMI includes the worlds largest screen gallery, two multi format cinemas and
hands on interactive, education and production zones.
This facility will put DUCMI on the map. I wish a facility like this was around when I was at
university, said Jackman.
Jackman will be available for photo opportunities and interviews for a period of time during the
launch.
Griffiths will be hosting an acting workshop for budding actors on the day.
I will love to be back in Geelong and working with the future talent of our industry, said Griffiths.
The event will be officially launched by the Federal Arts Minister, Kirby Brown. Minister Brown will
be announcing the release of Creative Australia, the new national cultural policy.
DUCMI is a world first, state-of-the-art facility for exhibiting and promoting Australian and
international screen content, said Minister Brown.
Cultural collaborations between DUCMI students and international students will also be on show at
the launch, as several short student made documentaries will be shown. These will cover topics such
as the environment and life in remote villages.
Movies and television episodes will be screening free for 24 hours on all screens beginning at 9am.
However, bookings are required to ensure a place.

Stars on their way to Deakin Universitys DUCMI launch
What: Deakin Universitys launch of Deakin University Centre for the Moving Image (DUCMI). The
exciting opening will put Geelong on the map as one of the top places to learn about film and
television.
Who: Hugh Jackman and Rachel Griffiths will both be assisting in the opening of DUCMI. Griffiths will
be available for interviews and photograph opportunities between 10am and 11am. Jackman will be
available for photo opportunities and interviews at 1pm until 2.30pm. Griffiths is also hosting an
acting workshop at 3pm. Minister Brown will announce Creative Australia at 12pm.
When: Opens Sunday, May 20, 9am. The event will operate in rain or shine.
Where: Deakin Universitys Waterfront Campus. Parking is free for the event in the Deakin car park
and there is surrounding parking along Geelongs waterfront. Public transport is easily accessible:

What public transport options do I have to get to the event?
Train services to and from Geelong through www.vline.com.au can be used and taxis and buses are
readily available at Geelong station to take you to the front door of the campus. Please visit
www.mcharrys.com.au for bus services ranging from the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf coast and all
throughout Geelong.
Where can I park?
There are many areas to park. Free parking is provided for the day at the Deakin University
waterfront campus car park and there is surrounding parking throughout Geelong if these spots are
taken prior to your arrival.
Will DUCMI benefit the Geelong community as well as Deakin University?
Yes the launch of DUCMI will not only benefit Deakin University but will benefit Geelong in the long
run as it will gain a reputation as being one of the best centres for those who wish to learn about
film and television, not only in Australia but worldwide.
Will there be information brochures about DUCMI available on the day?
Yes there will be an opportunity for attendants as they arrive to the event to be given an information
show bag.
Will the launch be suitable for young children in the families?
Yes, there will be gold coin donation face painting for the younger children and many child friendly
food options.
Will there be food and beverages available to purchase?
Yes, there are many stalls with different options available for everybodys taste. Options include
vegetarian and vegan options.
Is this a drug and alcohol free event?
Yes, there will be no alcohol available to purchase and illicit drugs are strictly prohibited. There will
be police on site monitoring the safety of attendants due to the high profile guests.
Do I need to purchase a ticket?
No, the event is free for anybody to come along to. Bookings are required however to ensure a
placing for the free movie screenings.

How do I secure a place in Rachel Griffiths acting workshop?
Bookings are required for the workshop as places will fill up quickly. There are 100 spots for budding

Will I be able to meet Hugh Jackman?
He will be available from 1pm to 2.30pm during the day for interviews and photo opportunities. He
will also be signing autographs.

Yes, the DUCMI launch is open to the public and welcomes anybody from the community to come

Deakin University excited to put Geelong on the map with the launch of DUCMI
Information about Geelong
Geelong is Victorias second largest city with a population of approximately 200,000 people. It is a
unique regional city which is surrounded by an array of picturesque sights including the Bellarine
peninsula, agricultural farms and the famous Great Ocean Road. The Barwon River flows through
Geelong and its surrounding suburbs which is home to many rowing events. Geelong has various
private and public schooling options as well as a TAFE college and the Waurn Ponds and Geelong
Waterfront Deakin University Campuses. Geelong is also home to the Ford car factory which
provides Geelong with 2000 skilled and semi-skilled jobs.
Deakin University
Established in 1974 Deakin University was Victorias fourth and the first regional university. Today
Deakin operates in an internationally connected mode as global partnerships and international
students continue to grow and flourish. Deakin University is Australias ninth largest University with
over 42,000 students enrolled, with one fifth of those being international students. The Geelong
Waterfront Campus where the DUCMI launch will be held has a student and staff population of

Deakin University Centre for the Moving Image (DUCMI)
DUCMI is developing the next generation of creative talent. The centre is a world first and state of
the art facility for exhibiting, promoting and preserving international and national screen content.
The DUCMI includes the worlds largest screen gallery, two multi format cinemas and hands on
interactive, education and production zones. Deakin University is committed to being ahead of the

DUCMI objectives
1. to promote and facilitate original research into film and film culture that contributes to the
wider understanding of its role in society;
2. to provide a platform for interdisciplinary academic discussions that involve cinema in all its
facets;
3. to encourage, and be a prime venue for, the national and international exchange of
esteemed doctoral, and postdoctoral film researchers;

4. to be a welcoming host for, and play an active part in, the organization of academic forums
that further peer debate, communication, and networks;
5. to play a custodian role in developing a wide range of accessible resources and tools for the
study of film and film related materials (including the Film Library, museum, a library, an arts

6. to establish an archival collection for the preservation and study of film and film related
materials;
7. to promote active collaborations and joint research initiatives into the study of film culture;
8. to stimulate , and actively participate in, the dissemination of results of research into film to
the public;
9. to offer expert advice and consultation for policing purposes concerning film culture.
Creative Arts and Creative Australia
In Australia 531,000 people work in the creative industries or are entrenched creatives in the
broader economy. Creative arts is a sector where growth is continuing to occur, and at a fast rate.
This year around 83,000 young Australians will graduate from tertiary courses in the area of creative
arts, when including TAFE graduates that number is doubled. Creative arts are beginning to be
embedded in Australian childrens lives with one third of Australian primary school children taking
classes in dance, drama, music and the visual arts. As of 2014 The Arts will be introduced into
Australian high schools as one of the core units in the national curriculum. Minister Kirby Brown will
announce the Creative Australia Policy which assists Australians who intend to pursue careers in the
arts and creative industries. The policy has funded DUCMI and guarantees its funding for the next
decade.
