Describe the portfolio item:

Vital Signs

Explain the purpose for including the item:
Used to monitor a patients status prior to or during care

Discuss what you learned, its importance to you, what improvement you can
make:
How to measure:
Heart rate
Blood pressure
Respiration rate
Temperature
Pain
It is important for me to know how to take blood pressure because I am often
responsible for my grandmothers health while my family is busy. While in my
care, I hold the task of taking her blood pressure manually, in order to do this I
need to know her systolic and diastolic pressures, in order to treat her with her
medication.
An improvement I can make would be for clinics to accurately take blood
pressure, in order to prescribe the right dosage of medication for the right period
of time.

Describe the portfolio item:
The Skeletal System

Explain the purpose for including the item:
The skeletal system protects the body's vital organs (brain, heart and lungs) and
provides the body with shape. We are only able to move due to the presence of a
skeletal system. It is important to know the bones and the types of injuries that
can happen.

Discuss what you learned, its importance to you, what improvement you can
make:
I learned about all types of injuries that can affect the bones in our systems. It is
important to know this piece of critical information in order to properly treat and
injury to any bone in the body. An improvement that I can make would be the
techniques and materials that are used during care of these injuries. Such as
casts; inventing a material that is waterproof, that way the struggle of wrapping it
wouldnt be such a problem.

Describe the portfolio item:
Vision

Explain the purpose for including the item:
Knowing about vision and the problems that can affect eyesight is something to
be aware of in order to maintain the health of eyesight.

Discuss what you learned, its importance to you, what improvement you can
make:
I learned about:
Extra ocular eye muscles (EOM). For example, EOM intact means the
muscles of the eyes that control the movement work right.
Nystagmus: the jumping of the eyeball. This would be detected in a drunk
person.
Cataract (opaque lens; disk shaped) has a cloudy affect, usually found in
elderly people and premature babies.
Pterygium: a non-cancerous that starts in the clear, thin tissue (conjunctiva)
of the eye.
Blown pupil: asymmetric pupil size, due to: head inury, cerebral bleed, or
hemorrhage.
Dilated pupils: symmetric, this is a classic sign of drug use.
It is important to know about these changes in vision in order to correctly
diagnose and treat a patient.
An improvement that can be made would be to notice these signs in the early
stages in order to treat the problem from enlarging.

Describe the portfolio item:
Chain of Infection

Explain the purpose for including the item:
To prevent the spread of disease from one individual to another

Discuss what you learned, its importance to you, what improvement you can
make:
I learned that in order for an infection to develop, each link of the chain must be
connected. Breaking any link of the chain can stop the transmission of infection.

It is important to know chain of infection, because we can stop the spread of
pathogens by washing our hands and wearing personal protective equipment.
An improvement that can be made would be to inform the public about the chain
of infection and how to prevent it. Such as: providing classrooms with hand
sanitizer along with posters in the restrooms about effective hand washing.

Describe the portfolio item:
Hand washing

Explain the purpose for including the item:
Hand washing is by far the best way to prevent germs from spreading and to keep
from getting sick.

Discuss what you learned, its importance to you, what improvement you can
make:
How to wash hands, effectively and prevent the spread of infection.
It is important to have knowledge of effective hand washing techniques in order
to keep from spreading germs. Working in a health care setting requires
cleanliness, so it important to know how much soap to use and to lather for how
long in order to kill off any bacteria.
Improvements that could be made in hand washing would be to offer the general
public pamphlets about effective techniques along with the dangers that could
come with not washing hands, and how germs are spread.
