Berlin Airlift/Blockade

Leading to Blockade

-Institution of Marshall Plan for European
recovery -London Conferences of
winter
& spring 1948
-London Program
(primary reason)
Beginning of Blockade
-1948 Soviets establish partial blockade in April and later
imposed a full blockade in June.
-Blockade prevented citizens of west
Berlin to receive food and materials
-Railways and highways were restricted
preventing access to materials
Berlin Airlift begins
-Airlift operation directed
by Lt. Gen. William
Tunner.
- If we withdraw, said the,
our position in Europe is
threatened, and
Communism
will run rampant.


Berlin Airlift
- Around 13,000 tons of supplies and food were
flown in daily
-Plane would take off or
land every 30 seconds
-Americans flew in coal
and food to west Berlin
-Cargo planes from
America, France,Britain.

Berlin Blockade Lifted
- Soviet Union lifts blockade on May 12, 1949.
-In total, 2,323,738 tons
of food, fuel, machinery
and other supplies
were delivered
-Total cost: $224million
-Airlift lasted 11 months
