Players from Seneca and Oakcrest high schools scramble for a loose ball in a South Jersey Group II tournament game played May 20.
The Golden Eagles rode seven second-half goals to a 12-2 victory over the visiting Falcons. Kevin Gray scored two goals and notched
two assists for Seneca.

Four years ago, Cherokee High
School student Nick Musulin had
a goal of getting involved in com-
munity service in his school. In
his time, he forged a relationship
with St. Jude Childrens Research
Hospital, established partner-
ships with area businesses and
raised more than $20,000 for the
charity.
On Wednesday night, the dis-
trict gave back to Musulin for his
years of hard work.
Musulin was named the Chero-
kee winner of the Student Volun-
teer Award, an annual recogni-
tion given to one student at each
Lenape district high school who
went above and beyond perform-
ing service in the community. The
other three award winners were
Lenape High School's Craig Cas-
sidy, Shawnee High School's
Abbey Wiker and Seneca High
School's Shawn Tuman.
For Musulin, the ceremony
was a culmination of four years

The Tabernacle Historical So-
ciety will hold its annual Straw-
berry Social on Saturday, June 7
from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the
grounds of Tabernacles town
hall at the corner of Tabernacle-
Medford Lakes Road and Carran-
za Road. In case of rain, it will be
held at the Tabernacle United
Methodist Church on Carranza
Road.
As a fund-raiser for a Seneca
High School scholarship, the
Strawberry Social has been a
tradition of the historical society
since 1976. Its a fun time to enjoy
the fruits of the town and to meet
your fellow townspeople. While
the main attraction is the cake,
strawberries and topping, hot
dogs and beverages will also be
available. The strawberries are
always sourced from the local
farms in Tabernacle. The cakes
are all homemade, and the por-
tions are very generous. In addi-
tion, the society will have various
items available for purchase.
These include historic plates,
afghans and Christmas orna-
ments. New this year, the Dave
Hangley Band will perform live
country music.
The bicentennial of 1976 gener-
ated the idea for the community
to band together to preserve, pro-
tect and promote the history of
the town. Once called the "Taber-
nacle in the Wilderness, Taber-
nacle was a part of Shamong,
Washington Township and
Chatsworth as the Lenape Indi-
ans lived throughout the area.
The Tabernacle Historical Socie-
ty boasts that they have a basket
woven by the last of the Lenape,
Indian Ann. She is buried in the
Tabernacle Cemetery.
The historical society main-
tains and preserves three build-
ings in the town. The Pepper
House was proudly owned by
only three families. It was built
in 1860 by Gilbert Knight who
fought in the Civil War and was
the towns blacksmith and a mem-
ber of the Grand Army of the Re-
public. Samuel and Carrie Scott
were the next owners who ran a
filling station and grocery store
across the street from the house.
The last people who owned the
Pepper House were Arthur and
Clara Pepper who resided there
until the 1950s. The Pepper
House is located on Carranza
Road, the second building from
town hall.
The Friendship Schoolhouse
was not originally built in Taber-
nacle, but many of the towns peo-
ple went there. It was located in
Washington Township on a cran-
berry farm and brought to Taber-
nacle in the 1970s. The building
was restored by the society and
placed on the grounds of what is
now Sequoia Alternative School
on Carranza Road. For a number
of years, the schoolhouse was
used as a teaching tool for the
fourth graders who studied New
Jersey history and the Native
American culture. Today, historic
tours are given annually to the
third graders who visit the town
hall, Pepper House, Friendship
School, Tabernacle Cemetery and
Indian Ann burial site as well as
the Carranza Monument.
Another Tabernacle landmark
that the society maintains is the
Tabernacle Cemetery's two out-
buildings and arch. One of the
two buildings has the original
two-hole outhouse located inside.
The historical society is work-
ing diligently to preserve, protect
and promote the towns history. It
needs the public's help to com-
plete many projects that are
planned for maintenance and ed-
ucation. All are welcome to the
Strawberry Social and to their
monthly meetings on the second
Thursday of the month at 7:30
p.m. within town hall.

Reading, writing and running a busi-
ness. Yes, the Lenape Regional High School
District has a different spin on the three
Rs as its transition service program con-
tinues to grow.
Ashlee Barton is a senior at Seneca High
School. For the last two years, in addition
to her usual requirements as a high school
student, shes been learning the ins and
outs of running A Rose in December, a flo-
ral shop on Stokes Road in Medford. The
goal of the program is to prepare students
for careers once their education ends.
Through this mentorship, Ashley has
learned life skills, including processing of
flowers, customer service and marketing,
LRHSD job developer Kim Mileszko said.
December Giberson-Shover, owner of A
Rose in December, has been a member of
the districts transition service program
for more than five years.
It teaches students a lot that they wont
learn in the classroom about what it takes
to run a business day to day, Giberson-
Shover said.
In addition to handling customers and
maintaining the store, the students who
work in the shop are required to research a
charitable organization and create a mar-
keting plan to bring to Giberson-Shover.
The goal is to hold a fundraiser for an or-
ganization that is close to the students
heart. Bartons choice was Compassionate
Friends Therapeutic Riding Center in
Medford.
CFTRC provides structured horseman-
ship programs specifically designed to
achieve maximum therapeutic benefit for
individuals with special needs.
Therapeutic riding, taught by a Profes-
sional Association of Therapeutic Horse-
manship International instructor, provides
structured horsemanship programs for in-
dividuals with special needs. Individual
programs assist each rider to meet their
goal and develop independent skills that
often carry over to the students everyday
lives.

elcome to the beach! Were
so glad you came. I see you
have six people in your
party this afternoon. Will that be
smoking or non-smoking?
Remember that question smoking
or non-smoking? Seems like ages ago
that, every time you went out to eat,
the hostess at your favorite restaurant
would ask you that question.
Would you like to negatively im-
pact your health and those around
you, or would you like to breathe un-
sullied air? Maybe that would have
been a better question.
Now, it seems like that question
might be back again, but at a different
place than you might think outside
of all places, at the beach.
Last week, a state Senate committee
approved a bill that would ban smok-
ing at beaches and public parks
throughout the state. The committee
amended the bill, which the state As-
sembly passed in March, to add a sec-
tion to allow towns to set aside up to 20
percent of a beach or park as a smok-
ing area.
Yep. A smoking area. Outside.
Seems funny, doesnt it?
New Jersey, like the country as a
whole, is taking a major step to control
smoking, even though it isnt a con-
trolled substance. And good for New
Jersey.
Studies continue to show or,
rather, they show even more so how
harmful second-hand smoke is, and as
such, it is right and proper for govern-
ment entities to further control when
and where smoking can occur.
Smoking is still legal in the state, of
course, so basically, New Jersey is tak-
ing the stance that it doesnt care if
you harm yourself as long as you
dont harm others.
Good for New Jersey, and good for
every other place that is passing simi-
lar bills.
People who travel to the beach, a
playground or a park do so to enjoy the
outdoors in all its glory. Nearby smok-
ing, to non-smokers, can ruin that ex-
perience and affect their health. It is
only right and fair, then, that our gov-
ernment protects non-smokers from
that which is harmful to them and in
which they are choosing not to partici-
pate.
Now if only tobacco wasnt such a
big business and didnt bring us so
much tax revenue, we could outlaw it
all together.
Smoking or non-smoking?
Thats a question that you could be asked once again

riders lives. Their progress is re-
markable and rewarding, espe-
cially when witnessed over time.
Each rider shows improvement
in different ways, CFTRC presi-
dent and program director Sherri
Briggs said on the organizations
website. We have witnessed non-
verbal students become inspired
to communicate and speak. An-
other example is one student that
came to their first lesson in a
walker and has steadily become
strong enough to walk without as-
sistance. Many riders achieve a
steadily increasing level of inde-
pendence from the assistance of
leaders and side walkers on the
ground. Other riders are able to
realize the goal of being able to
ride a horse on their own with lit-
tle assistance from volunteers on
the ground.
Barton knows the lessons shes
learned while working are ones
that will stick with her for the
long term.
Its been really great to learn
how a business is run from the
ground up, Barton said. Ive
learned a lot.
For many students, this is their
first experience working, but
Giberson-Shover remains im-
pressed by their commitment and
ability to learn.
This is a program that does a
lot of good, that other businesses
should support. Theyre good
kids. My hope is they become per-
manent employees after they
graduate, Giberson-Shover
said.

Wiker totally shocked by award
of hard work and determination.
He let rejection after rejection for
his school fundraising event blow
right by and eventually started a
head-shaving fundraiser event,
with proceeds going toward St.
Jude's. The event debuted in 2012
and has now become a fixture on
the Cherokee calendar.
We were able to partner with
the Philadelphia Flyers,
Musulin said. We were able to
get businesses and celebrities in-
volved.
Each of the district's four hon-
orees received their award for dif-
ferent accomplishments, but they
each had something in common.
District director of programs and
planning Chris Heilig said all
four recipients accumulated
more than 300 hours of service
each. All four were not only in-
volved in clubs in their school
community, but also reached out
and served within their respec-
tive towns.
Wiker provided a good example
of performing service outside
school grounds. The Shawnee stu-
dent led an effort to construct a
rain garden at the Vaughan Com-
munity House in Medford Lakes.
A video during the ceremony
filmed her and other Shawnee
students performing the work.
I was totally shocked, Wiker
said upon learning she won the
award. I was speechless. I didn't
think I was going to win it.
Tuman was honored by the
award, but left the audience with
words of encouragement. He
noted how one doesn't just need to
work at or attend one of the high
schools to get involved.
I think its amazing that,
where we live, you can serve, he
said.
The Lenape district also hon-
ored parent volunteers who
served the school district through
parent organizations. From
school bands to sports and robot-
ics teams, parents from all four
high schools were recognized
with certificates for their service.
As parents, youre our stu-
dents first teacher, Superintend-
ent Carol Birnbohm said. You
show what community service
looks like in action.
The recognition of the parents
is something the student award
winners recognized as well. Each
thanked their parents for their
guidance.
All four award recipients will
be graduating and heading to col-
lege in the fall. Musulin said he
wants to continue his involve-
ment in community service as he
heads to Indiana University.
Still, Wednesday night's cere-
mony is one he will never forget.
It's incredible, Musulin said.
It's amazing to be around some
of these other people who have
served their school.
