Part II: Annas Illnesses

Illnesses Effect on System (if applicable)

Diabetes Sickle Cell
Anemia
Heart Disease Urinary Tract
Infection
Cardiovascular

Hypertension
occurs as a
result of
damaged
blood vessels
from high
levels of
glucose in the
blood.

Abnormal
shape of red
blood cells
causes clotting
and makes id
harder for the
heart to pump
blood to the
entire body.
Makes it
harder for the
heart to pump
blood to the
entire body
and may cause
an
enlargement of
the chambers
of the heart.
Spesis may
occur. When
there is sepsis
in the body, the
wide spread
inflammation
can lead to an
unsafe drop in
blood pressure
the can lead to
organ failure in
the heart.
Digestive

It is harder for
the body to use
glucose as an
energy source
as a result of
the insulin in
the body no
encouraging
the cells to
take up the
glucose.
Bilirubin
gallstones -
sickle cells die
in 20 days;
liver breaks
down the
bilirubin; extra
bilirubin can
become a
gallstone in the
gallbladder

(bilirubin forms
Blood may not
arrive at the
stomach or
other digestive
organs and
may cause a
lack of nutrient
absorption in
the body.
Clotting may
lead to a drop
in blood
pressure that
may lead to
organ failure
such as liver
failure.

bile)

Immune

Lack of blood
flow to the
nervous
system may
occur due to
damaged
vessels. This
would keep the
body from
sending the
signals to the
brain to jump
start the bodys
immune
system.
There is not as
much blood for
the phagocyts
to travel
through to
impose a
nospecific
response to
the affected
area.
Harder for
blood to flow to
affected areas
and transport
macrophages
and antibodies.
Increased
production of
lymphocytes (B
& T cells) and
antibodies
against the
bacteria;
Inflammatory
response (may
increase
additional UTI
and/or damage
to urinary tract
structures.
Nervous

Damaged
nerves can
cause tingling
sensations due
to a lack of
blood flow.
Lack of blood
flow can lead
to sensations
in lower and
upper
extremities of
the body.
Harder to
supply blood to
the nervous
system.
Burning or
stinging
sensations can
occur and are
symptoms.
Respiratory

Kussmaul can
occur due to
ketoacidosis
which is a
common
complication of
diabetes.
Acute chest
pain is a
common
symptom from
sickle cell
anemia.
Not as much
oxygen
exchange in
the lungs plus
a lack of blood
flow to the
lungs.
Lung failure
may occure as
a result of the
wide spread
inflammation.
Urinary

Kidneys can
becom
overworked
and necrosis of
kidney tissues
can occur,
which causes
kidney failure.
Sickle cell
anemia
increases the
risk of a UTI
because of the
lack of blood
and
macrophages
Blood is not
transferred to
that area which
increases risk
of infection.
Pain in
excretion and
localized
inflammation
which can
cause pain.

that are
transported to
that area.
