History
Much of the land was Native American
territory before Indians were moved out
from 1802-1825, while white settlers moved
in 1821. By 1842 the town of Atlanta had six
buildings and a population of 30. A railroad
system was put into the city and population
grew to about 9,600 people by 1860.

Georgia had a great agriculture
industry, but with many slaves. When the
Civil War started, of course Georgia was on
the Confederacy because slavery was a part
of their economy. Atlanta became the hub
for distribution of military weapons and
food supply. In 1864, the battle of Atlanta
was here. Over 4 months of battling, the
mayor gave up and later on General William
Sherman from the Union ordered his troops
to burn down the city.
After the civil war, Atlanta started to
rebuild their city. During the mid-20
th

century the civil rights movement started.
Martin Luther King was a proud leader of
this movement. After this Atlanta put the
pass behind them and made the effort a
great city with a wide variety things to be
proud of. To this day that remains true.
