A Narrative Report
on the
Supervised Industrial Training (SIT) Program

On-the-job experience can be as valuable as anything learned in the academics. After all, one
cannot really understand what a job is all about until he have worked in that environment. Internships
are great opportunities to speak directly to people who have experience in the role one aspire to; and
their knowledge of the job and working environment will give someone a greater understanding of
what its all about and what is needed to progress.
Experience is becoming a crucial factor for employers when deciding who gets their foot in
the door. Its strongly advised that students and graduates take the opportunity to complete a period
of work experience to ensure they have a competitive advantage over their peers; and thats where
an internship can make all the difference. So, what actually is an internship?
An internship is a period of work experience offered by an employer to give students and
graduates exposure to the working environment, often within a specific industry, which relates to
their field of study.
Internships can be done in a range of sectors, including sales, marketing, engineering, graphic
design, management, I.T. and many, many more. Throughout an internship, one will develop a variety
of soft skills, including communication skills, personal effectiveness, presentation skills, creative
problem solving and influencing skills.
An internship experience can also give someone a real insight into the world of work,
allowing the chance to build on the theory learned at university and helping to gain practical skills that
will help strengthen someones curriculum vitae and thus making him more employable. Internships
offer the chance to test skills in real-life situations, explore career options and gain an insight into an
organization or career path. As for my on-the-job training experience, all of these has been possible
with one of the leading construction company in the Philippines the D.M. Consunji, Inc.
D.M. Consunji, Inc. has been known today as the countrys Builder of Landmarks and has

construction. Through continuing research, DMCI is a pioneer in the application of advanced
construction technologies in the Philippines. It is renowned for completing technologically complex

Foreign governments and corporations have likewise tapped DMCI for large scale projects.
The US Navy hangar in Subic. In addition, DMCI has constructed or has served as a significant
contractor in a number of projects abroad.

man-hours at the Shell Petroleum Corporations STAR project.
As for the Companys recent ventures, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1
Rehabilitation project is considered as one of the biggest structural retrofitting work in the country.
This is where I am assigned as an intern.
The NAIA Terminal 1 Rehabilitation project is a 1.3-billion contract with the Department of
Transportation and Communications (DOTC). The project involves the structural retrofitting,
improvement of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection facilities, as well as architectural
works of the 32-year old building.
As an intern, my work as a civil engineer reflects the duties of the field engineer, office
engineer and service (quality control) engineer. These were made possible as the management of the
project assured that all of the things involved in this rehabilitation shall be learned by the interns.
