Feature Writing
Feature articles that appear in the newspaper are intended to supplement depth and perspective in a news story. It
tells the reader a story which based on facts and can never be a fiction. Feature begins with the lead. It is also written to
inform, entertain, and explain, give an opinion and present human interest story.
Characteristics of the Feature Article
a) It presents factual.
b) It uses novelty more often than with a summary lead.
c) It can be timely or timeless. A good feature depends upon current issue. However, some feature stories are not in
current happening as long as the topics or issues catch the readers interest.
d) It can be in any length. Feature articles can explain deeper the details. Unlike, news stories need to be cut in order
to give direct happenings of the event and the important key points.
e) It has variety of tone. It depends on its purpose whether it is light or serious. More often, feature article is more
informal than that straight news that gives the actual happenings and factual.
Suggested subject matter for Feature Stories:
Unusual hobbies in the classroom
Instructional feature on how to use or protect anything which the writers prefer to write.
Suggestions for trips during semestral break. Inform the reader the descriptions of amusement available, length of
trips and places.
Usual experience
Trending fashions in clothes for women and men
Special days like Valentines Day, Graduation Day
Personality sketches
Feature article has its own form and style. It also has different classifications. The following are the types of Feature
article:
1. Feature story (or news feature) - The main concern of this type of feature takes a subject of current interest. The
feature story deepens the information provided in the news story. However, it doesnt mean to supplant the news
story yet to add information and elaborate the happenings of the news to make it clearer and more vivid.
Example:
Long-running strategy RPG dodges permadeath with one of the year's best. There were greater
commercial and critical successes than Fire Emblem: Awakening's in this Year of Luigi, but none could be as
sweet. The underdog series finally saw the acclaim that it deserved from a mass audience for a banner year, one in
which the stakes couldn't have been higher.
2. Human interest story Commonly, this type of feature articles depends on the creative writer. The topics
usually involve the interest of the people. Some topics relate about dramatics, odd, humorous or sensational.
Example:
Supporter holds special fundraisers to remember loved ones
Mike Ryan
Twelve years ago when Mike Ryan was 14 years old, he had never heard of chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD). So he was surprised and concerned when his father John was diagnosed with the lung
disease later that year. Mike learned that COPD would diminish his typically active father's lung capacity, and
that there was not much his family could do to stop it from progressing.
"We tried to take as many household chores off of my dad's plate as we could, but he wanted to live life
as normally as possible," Mike said. "Daily chores seemed to be strenuous for him, but he was stubborn and
would just set aside more time so he could stop and catch his breath as he worked."
COPD is a combination of lung damage and mucus buildup that makes it hard to breathe. It can include
chronic bronchitis, emphysema and sometimes asthma. It is often caused by smoking, but pollutants and
secondhand smoke can be causes as well. Approximately 1.2 million Illinoisans have COPD, yet half are still
undiagnosed. Until John's diagnosis, he had simply thought he was short of breath due to years of smoking.
For a year after he was diagnosed, John continued to work long hours as an electrician and tried to keep
up with work at home.
"The doctors were shocked," Mike said. "They told him he must be Superman for handling his workload
on such a diminished lung capacity."
Despite his desire to keep life as normal as possible, the family couldn't ignore it when John's health took
a turn for the worst.
"My dad would have to sit down and catch his breath even during his walk from our backdoor to our car,"
Mike said.
The Ryan family found out that the only way John could improve his health was by getting a lung
transplant. They were hopeful. Mike had heard stories about lung transplant recipients who were up and walking
the day after surgery, and he didn't think it hurt to have hope his dad's procedure would go just as well.
"Unfortunately, my dad had a reaction to his medicine the day after his surgery and kept developing
infections," Mike said. "For the next 11 months, he never even made it out of bed to enjoy what his new lungs
could do for him."
John passed away in May of 2004. A disease that had once been foreign to Mike had suddenly changed
his life. A few years later, he had to face it again when his cousin Kathy Merkle was diagnosed with COPD. The
family wanted to really fight the disease.
In 2010, Kathy organized a group to rappel in Respiratory Health Association's Skyline Plunge! Chicago
event. The city's only urban rappel adventure, Respiratory Health Association hosts Skyline Plunge! Chicago
twice a year to raise awareness and funds for lung disease research and programs. "Kathy's Steppers," as the group
dubbed themselves, rappelled 27 stories down theWit Hotel and raised more than $8,000 for the charity. Mike
saw the fun his relatives had at the daring charity event and he rappelled twice more, raising $4,000.
Now that Mike has lost two loved ones to lung disease (Kathy passed away in July of 2012), he continues
to raise funds and awareness for Respiratory Health Association. Recently, he held a fundraiser at Trinity Bar in
Chicago to raise funds for Respiratory Health Association's lung disease research and programs. It raised more
than $3,000 for the local nonprofit, in addition to the $2,000 he raised through two other fundraisers.
"Respiratory Health Association's mission is very near and dear to my heart," Mike said. "When I share
with friends what I'm raising money and awareness for, it often sparks conversations with them about how they've
been affected by lung diseases. Through my charity work, I've realized that chances are you know someone who
has lung disease or been affected by it in some way."

3. Interview article- May be conducted interviews to acquire information such as opinions, ideas on a topic of
interest to the public. The interviewer may seek questions usually from prominent person, recognized authority
and celebrity to gather facts of personality that gives appeal to the people.
Example:
An Interview With Dr. Michael Hurd
By Joseph Kellard
Dr. Michael Hurd is a psychologist in private practice in Chevy Chase, MD. He offers in-person therapy,
phone consultation, and e-mail consultation. He is the author of the forthcoming book Bad Therapy Good
Therapy: And How To Tell The Difference (Barclay House, New York). He also publishes The Living Resources
Newsletter, which covers psychology, education, and politics.
Axiom 3: Since modern philosophers have made a mockery of philosophy and thus destroyed its connection and
importance to life, do you think that most people are ignorant of the fact that a healthier mind is rooted in
understanding and correcting their fundamental philosophic ideas; that one's psychology is a derivative of one's
philosophy?
Dr. Hurd: Absolutely. Most people think philosophy is a bunch of nonsense--and, given what they are offered by
modern philosophers (from Kant onward) as well as religion--who can blame them? Some people do understand,
or at least sense, that their emotional states have something to do with their underlying ideas, but such people are,
in my experience, few and far between. The great majority of people I encounter, as a mental health professional,
approach therapy with the assumption that therapy is a passive process in which something is "done to" them (like
surgery, or medical treatment) as opposed to an active process of identifying mistaken ideas and behaviors. They
often react with surprise and even resentment when they learn that they are responsible for their emotional states,
and that they have to work on changing their emotions by changing their underlying premises and their behaviors.
Some recover from this realization quickly, and are subsequently able to make progress in therapy.
Axiom 3: Philosopher Leonard Peikoff has said that psychology is in a pre-scientific state. He compares Sigmund
Freud to Plato, in that Plato raised all the right questions in philosophy but gave all the wrong answers. Aristotle,
Plato's student, provided the right answers. Similarly, Freud raised the right questions in psychology but gave the
wrong answers; however, there has been no Aristotle in psychology yet. What do you think of this analogy? And
do you think Objectivism, Ayn Rand's philosophy, has contributed to any valid ideas in psychology, or developed
any better or new rational paths for it?
Dr. Hurd: I agree with the analogy between Freud and Plato. Freud's main contribution is that he established a
scientific basis for emotions and consciousness which had previously been the domain of religion and mysticism.
Unfortunately, he also advanced the idea that man is nothing more than an instinctual beast torn by essentially
uncurable internal conflicts. In some respects, this is worse than religion, because it eliminates all possibility of
man developing a moral code, including a rational one. If man is a hopeless animal, after all, then what's the point
of identifying a proper morality? Objectivism provides the base for a rational psychology. First of all, it provides
a rational moral code, a code which (unlike that offered by religion) actually works, is actually life-enhancing
rather than life-destroying. A multitude of psychological problems are caused by the dominant Judeo-Christian
ethic that sacrifice is the good, rather than rational self-interest, productivity, and happiness. Secondly,
Objectivism provides a rational epistemology, reason, and identifies the fact that emotions are simply automatic
consequences of one's underlying ideas, values, and premises. Studying Objectivism and--more importantly,
psychologically speaking--internalizing, automatizing, and integrating Objectivism into day-to-day life represents
an enormous step forward into psychological health. Of course, the specific methods of resolving emotional
problems are to be found in the fields of psychology and psychotherapy, rather than philosophy. For instance,
cognitive-behavioral therapy (which I practice) helps a person identify the premises implicit in his
emotions/behaviors and to correct and challenge them, where necessary. To the best of my knowledge, the
innovators of cognitive-behavioral therapy (such as Aaron Beck and David Burns, both psychiatrists) were not
students of Objectivism, nor were they influenced by it, but Objectivism nevertheless provides the philosophical
basis for this technique. By "philosophical basis" I mean the idea that emotional states are a consequence of one's
underlying ideas, thoughts, and premises.
Axiom 3: What advantage does an individual who generally understands and consistently practices Objectivism
have in overcoming psychological problems, such as unearned guilt or unwarranted fears, than a person who just
passively follows a hodgepodge of contradictory fundamental ideas, such as those offered by religion, skepticism,
pragmatism? Dr. Hurd: A serious Objectivist will usually approach therapy with more realistic and accurate
expectations. He understands the nature of man and the proper code by which a man should live. He is at an
enormous advantage compared to, say, the religious altruist, who thinks he is a bad person if he does not sacrifice,
or the cynical pragmatist, who does not think anything and usually just wants a quick-fix to get rid of his
problems with little or no work. The mistake many Objectivists make, in my experience, is that they feel guilty
for their mistaken emotions, as if they somehow had a mistaken emotion on purpose. For example, an individual
might feel morally guilty or bad simply because he had an altruistic or mystical emotion. He needs to understand
that emotions do not have the metaphysical status of actions. Emotions can be mistaken, or illogical, and in need
of correction, so he can better function in and enjoy life. But emotions, as such, cannot be "bad" or "good" the
way actions can. Internalizing and automatizing rational ideas, in the context of a society in which the philosophic
ideas are overwhelmingly irrational, is no easy task. Psychological health, like liberty, requires eternal vigilance.

4. Interpretative feature- This type of feature articles tells how and why of a news story. It can explain and inform
what caused the event or the possible consequences of the event. It gives the reader a background and importance
of economic, political, social and other problems of everyday life.
Example :

Development of Low-maintenance Tracks
Kazuhiko Murao, Hirotaka Aihara
The railway track maintenance unit has been involved in the research and development of reduced
maintenance tracks since before 1965 (i.e., since the days of the former Japan National Railways (JNR)) in order
to reduce the amount of work required to maintain existing ballast tracks
used for operations. In order to minimize the effects on train operations on operational lines, following
requirements have to be cleared two to three hour-installtion time, which is available for track maintenance and
rational track-laying costs that help to reduce maintenance costs after track-laying. The Technical Center has
developed the "TC Type Low-maintenance Tracks" that have superior labor-reduction characteristics and cost-
effectiveness. These tracks were introduced on the Yamanote Line, the most heavily used line within the JR East
Group, in 1998, and the total length of track that has been laid has been gradually extended. This article presents
an overview of the TC Type Low-maintenance Tracks, and technical initiatives concerning the expanded use of
these tracks.
Railway tracks are made up of rails, sleepers, and track ballast. This construction efficiently distributes
the load of the trains to the roadbed. Repeated loads on the structure by trains repeatedly going over it cause the
track ballast and roadbed to gradually sink. When the rail surface of the tracks that the trains run on become
uneven, this adversely effects the ride and can even lead to trains jumping the tracks in the worst cases.

How to talk to your kids about depression, burnout
By Darrielle Snipes, WKYC-TV, Cleveland

CLEVELAND Sometimes getting children to open up can be difficult especially when they are
going through something like depression. They may not know how to explain themselves. So approaching the
subject by listening can make all the difference. Parents should know best if their children are having bad day or
slipping into depression. "My one recommendation to parents ... let them talk," says Dr. Vanessa Jensen, a
psychologist with Cleveland Clinic's Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health. If a child doesn't open up the first
time, keep bringing it up. But be somewhat clever in your approach, she says. Talk about your own experiences or
what you've observed about your child's behavior. "So, observations might be, 'Ya know, I noticed you look kind
of worried. That look on your face makes me think something is going on.' So start with what you see," Jensen
says. Most important: Listen and don't be afraid to ask the tough questions the ones you might not want to
know the answer to. "Do you ever get so down you don't want to be here? Or do you want to be dead?" Jensen
says. Signs of depression include a remote attitude, dropping grades and mood swings. Ask your children how
their day went. It might get the conversation going. If they are falling asleep while doing homework or are
grumpy, burnout may be the diagnosis. Getting that conversation going could help parents and kids agree that
scaling back on activities might be the answer.

6. Informative article-An informative article informs the reader by explaining and giving details on a given topic.
The informative article is not an argumentative article that tries to persuade the reader to one side or the other. It
may instructs and imparts knowledge by giving scientific facts.

9 Ways of Having Healthier Lungs
If we take good care of our lungs, they can last a lifetime. The lungs are very durable if they are not
attacked from the outside. With a few exceptions, our lungs do not get into trouble unless we get them into
trouble. Here are some things everyone should do to keep the lungs healthy as with age.

Smoking is the worst thing that can be done to your lungs on a regular basis. There is not any safe
threshold when it comes to smoking. The more you smoke, the greater is your risk of lung cancer and COPD,
which contains chronic bronchitis and emphysema. In addition smoke is very harmful and there is mounting
evidence that just being in an environment where people have smoked or even third hand smoke is very
dangerous. It is not enough to quit only cigarettes. Marijuana, pipes or cigars can harm your lungs the same way.

More than 155 million people still live in areas where air pollution is a threat to health. Air pollution can
not only make diseases like asthma and COPD worse, but it can also kill people. You can make a difference by
opposing efforts to cut regulation and supporting clean air laws. On the individual level you should cut use of
electricity, avoid burning trash or wood and drive less.

Exercise in itself wont stronger your lungs but it will help to get more out of them. The better your cardio
respiratory fitness is, the easier it will be for your lungs to supply your heart and muscles with oxygen. Regular
workouts are particularly important if you have chronic lung disease. Your lungs need all the help they could get.
If your asthma symptoms are triggered by cold air, use a scarf or mask your face to warm the air before it gets to
your lungs.

Example:
Nagasaki Anniversary: Japan Marks 68 Years Since Atomic Bombing
TOKYO -- Nagasaki's mayor criticized Japan's government on Friday for failing to back an international
nuclear disarmament effort as the country marked the 68th anniversary of the atomic bombing of his city. Mayor
Tomihisa Taue said Japan's inaction "betrayed expectations of the global community." Japan refused in April to
sign an unconditional pledge by nearly 80 countries to never use nuclear weapons. The document, prepared by a
U.N. committee, is largely symbolic because none of the signatories possesses nuclear weapons. Countries with
nuclear arsenals that have not signed it include the United States, Russia, India and Pakistan. Japan does not have
nuclear weapons and has pledged not to produce any, although some hawkish members of the ruling party say the
country should consider a nuclear option.
Taue said that as the world's only victim of atomic bombings, Japan's refusal to join the initiative contradicts its
non-nuclear pledge. "I call on the government of Japan to return to the origin of our pledge as an atomic-bombed
country," he said at the peace park near the epicenter of the 1945 blast.
Tokyo apparently refused to sign the document because of its security arrangement with the United
States, which could allow the U.S. an option to deploy nuclear weapons from Japan to counter the threat of North
Korea. That suggests that Japan's government would approve the use of nuclear weapons under some
circumstances, Taue said. About 6,000 people, including U.S. Ambassador John Roos, attended Friday's
ceremony after offering silent prayers for the victims of the U.S. atomic bombings on Nagasaki on Aug. 9,
1945, and on Hiroshima three days earlier. The bombings prompted Japan's surrender in World War II. The
Hiroshima blast killed an estimated 140,000 people, and another 70,000 died in Nagasaki. Opposition to nuclear
power in Japan has risen sharply after a March 2011 earthquake and tsunami ravaged the Fukushima nuclear
plant, which spewed radiation and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people. Despite the public's safety
concerns, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is aggressively pushing to export nuclear plants and technology to
developing countries, including Turkey and Vietnam, and is trying to step up nuclear cooperation with France and
India. In a speech at the ceremony, Abe did not mention the dilemma Japan is facing over nuclear energy. He said
Japan as the sole victim of nuclear attacks has the duty to achieve a nuclear-free world and keep telling the world
of the inhumane side of nuclear weapons.

New Year, Heres Day and other holidays.
Example:
Signs of Spring
By Sunny Brown
As many people across the nation are still digging out from under record snowfalls it hardly seems the
time to start thinking about light white, crisp ros and fruity red wines that tickle the palate and speak of warm
days and spring flowers, but we Winegeeks like to stay ahead of the curve. So here are our recommendations
wine-wise as soon as you start to see Signs of Spring.
Starting with the white wines, nothing says "I love you Warm Spring Sunshine" quite like a bottle of
Gruner Veltliner. It could be called the perfect spring fling as it is a crisp and dry white with flavors and aromas
that range from white pepper, flowers, green apples, cream and many other light and lively notes. Great Gruners
are also said to have a slightly green edge to them, similar to fresh spring peas or even fiddlehead ferns, which by
the way are only available in the spring. Coincidence? Hmmm.
The Hiedler Gruner Loess from the Kamptal region is a crackling lightning bolt of cold and clean
intensity, filled with spring floral notes, gobs of juicy fresh fruit and a nervy and high strung style that is making
my mouth water just thinking about it. Buy, drink, burp, repeat.
Other options that work for spring are floral Albarios from Spain, fruity Pinot Gris from Oregon,
spritzy Vinho Verdes from Portugal and my personal favorite, the sweet/ tart dichotomy that is a great German
Kabinett Riesling. Each of these wines are light and lively and work well with the lighter fare that graces the
spring dinner table.
Another option along these lines is the arrival of the yearly allocations of delicious ross from Europe
and California. These are definitely not the sweet Mateus that clogged palates and wine store shelves in years
gone by. Dry, fruity, floral and fresh ross from the world over are released every spring, and Winegeeks
everywhere will be lining up to take advantage of their delicate and easy to love qualities.
One that stands out every year is the Chateau Virgile Costieres de Nimes Ros. From rocky soils in the
far southwestern edge of the Rhone Valley in southern France, this is a whimsical yet quality ros. The bright
raspberry, cherry and even orange zest notes are offset by fresh acidity and a light and crisp feel. When you want
just a little more red fruit and spice than a white can provide, but want to avoid the heavy qualities of a red this is
your answer.
And finally what would a wine lovers life be like without a red or two in the rotation? Even on the most
gloriously bright and clear and white wine-like of Spring days a light and fruit-forward red can be a welcome
addition to the mix. Pinot Noir is always fun if done right, and I am talking real Pinot Noir here, no syrah-like
15% alcohol fruit-bomb from Napa or even Willamette, or even whatever they are putting in the Red Bicyclette
these days, no I mean elegant, perfumed, soft, delicate and almost see-through Pinot. And to find this style there is
only one place to turn: Burgundy. There is no region on earth more suited to producing transparent styles of Pinot,
and the light red and black fruits, lavender perfume, subtle earthen notes and bright acidity of a fine red Burgundy
is about as Spring-like as a red can get. They also pair nicely with seafood, poultry and light dishes from the grill,
which so happen to be quite fashionable in the Spring months.
The Bourgogne Rouge from Joseph Voillot is what my taste buds mentally picture when discussing this
style of wine. Many Bourgogne Rouge come from younger vines, inferior vineyards or are blends from the entire
30km stretch of Burgundy. However the Voillot is sourced from old vines grown entirely within Volnay and
Pommard, two of the very best and most storied communes in the Cote dOr. Volnay in particular is known for
creating wonderfully elegant and feminine styles of Pinot Noir, which just so happen to coincide with our sought-
after lighter style of Pinot.
Other red options for Spring include juicy and fragrant Cabernet Francs from California, soft and sweet
Dolcettos from Italy and young Tempranillos from Rioja, Spain.
The options are many, but ultimately your wine selection may be dictated by your mood, the weather, and how
many days a week you can fire up the grill after its long winter sleep. Either way, with a few warm days and lots
of bright green grass around the corner you cant go wrong with these wines.

Example:
The Love of Different
By Anonymous, Stratford, CT
My first love was in middle school, the fall of seventh grade. He wasn't a guy from my school. My friends
and I must have been filled with the want for change, because we danced with many guys that night. We were
actively seeking different. Consequently, we had a couple of rules we followed that night: other people would
pick out your clothes; other people would do your make up; other people would do your hair. Nobody was going
as themselves. Shockingly this wasn't a costume party, we just wanted change. My philosophy (not that I knew
everyone else's at the time) was that I was going to have fun with people who didn't know me. For one night I
was going to be a different person (or try to be).
The afternoon before the dance I got ready with a bunch of friends at Caroline's house. The first thing we
did when we got there was figure out what everyone was going to wear. We all dumped out what we had brought
into a pile. A problem appeared. Looking at the mass of clothing it appeared at first that nobody would be trading
clothes; that everyone would have to wear what they brought. All sorts of teenaged articles of clothing covered
the bed. All sorts of sizes, colors, and shapes of clothing you could imagine were quickly everywhere as we tore
through the pile of clothing seeing what we could find. Everyone mutually decided that I would be the one who
needed the most help getting ready and deciding what to wear. My clothing consisted of a tank-top of Caroline's
that was entirely too big (but tied in the back so you couldn't tell by looking at it), a blue button down that I
brought with me (unbuttoned and worn over the tank-top), and a jean skirt that I thought was too small (I had to
be convinced that it wasn't too tight or too short), but my friends dressed like me that night, wearing semi fitting
clothes.
After we were all satisfied with our clothing choices, we crowded into the bathroom that adjoined with
Caroline's bedroom and we all crammed around the mirror. Curling irons and straightening irons were plugged in
to heat up. It was again mutually agreed upon that I would go first. Everyone (except me) agreed that I should
have my hair curled. Unknown to them, my hair doesn't really cooperate when you're trying to curl it, and it ends
up looking frizzy as opposed to having actual curls; but I let them win that argument. I let them win the argument
again when they wanted to put make up on me. When they were finished with me I watched them finish getting
ready.
A few hours later we arrived at the dance. Before we even walked in we knew this was going to be
different from all our other dances. I remember it was raining, and we made a break for the door. We were
breathless. From excitement, from running, from the loud bass upstairs. Checking our names off on the list, we
walked upstairs where it was hot, loud, dark, and smelled like guys. We were early. The other girls from our
school had yet to arrive and we were surrounded by guys. Guys we didn't know. For our young age of thirteen, it
was everything we could have hoped for. We took advantage of it. My friends went from guy to guy, getting
phone numbers and emails, writing down their own information on Poland Spring water bottle wrappers to give
to the guys they danced with.
A while into the dance Emma, one of the friends I had come with, came over and said, "Can you come to
the bathroom with me?" I told her I didn't want to go right now. "But it's really important." I sighed and
followed her to the bathroom. We went to the mirror and look at ourselves. Then I looked at her. "Well? What did
you bring me here for?" She turned to me. "This guy, Rolando, is stalking me. I danced with him once and now he
won't leave me alone." I smiled. "Really?" "Yeah," she says. "He's probably waiting outside the bathroom right
now for me to come out." I went to check. A first look at the guy outside the bathroom suggested nothing
suspicious, but I kept watching him and noticed that he was pacing back and forth as if waiting for someone. Yes,
he was her stalker. We made a run for it back upstairs to lose him and start dancing. A few minutes later Caroline
said so me, "Looks like Emma's not the only one with somebody interested in her." As I turned around I saw a
blond guy in a baseball cap starting at me. I tried not to make eye contact with him and I turned back around and
continued the conversation I was having with Caroline. The next thing I knew the guy that was staring at me was
right behind me and Caroline did a disappearing act and left me. Alone. With him.
The entire time we dance, Fields of Gold by Sting is playing. The room was hot and I could feel his
sweaty hands on my back. We talked about the weather and didn't know what to say to each other. The
conversation went in circles. My head was spinning; maybe from the conversation, maybe from the hot room. At
the end of the dance we exchanged emails. When my dad came to pick me up at the end of the dance I told him it
was the best night ever and I thought I was really truly happy.
The day after the dance my friends thought it was the best night ever. A year later we looked back on it
and realized it wasn't really that great. This year we looked back on it and realized how fake we were, how fake it
all was. We could have been part of a music video for "Waiting for Superman" by Daughtry. Anybody could have
looked at either of us and thought that, "Shes waiting for Superman, to lift her up and take her anywhere; Show
her love and climbing through the air." We had the same mindset as the girl from the song. We were waiting for
something that wasn't going to come. The guys we danced with, we stopped talking to after a couple of weeks.
We don't remember them. They don't remember us. We tried too hard to not be ourselves. My first love? Well,
maybe it was love or maybe it wasn't, but it all started when I was pretending to be somebody else, and as time
went on, I realized that I needed to be myself and that changing yourself for a person that you think you love it
not the right way to go about it.

A Paris Farewell
By AMY M. THOMAS
Published: March 25, 2011

IVE always been one of those girls. A die-hard Francophile. An American helpless in the face of Parisian
charms and pleasures. A New Yorker who could never seem to shake the City of Light. I went for a college
semester, I went with boyfriends, I went to eat chocolate. And finally, for a two-year period beginning in 2009, I
went to live my dream.
Now that Im back home in New York, my vision of Paris has been altered. What was once mysterious is
now intimately understood. What was once mythical is now more real (though, admittedly, still magical). To
some extent, Paris will always belong to the Truffauts, Fitzgeralds and Bernhardts of the world. But now some of
my own history runs through its streets too.
Weaned as I was on A Moveable Feast and Memoirs of Montparnasse, when I moved to Paris, I saw
it clearly divided between the artsy Left Bank and the buttoned-up Right Bank. The Left Bank was for thinkers
and dreamers; artists and musicians; students and stargazers who famously sought inspiration and, peut-tre,
absinthe. Its where Josephine Baker shimmied, where Hemingway feasted and where Sartre and de Beauvoir had
endless philosophical debates.
The Right Bank was for bankers at the Bourse and flneurs on the grand boulevards. It was where
manicured gardens, symmetrical squares and majestic monuments reigned supreme; a mlange of foreign
embassies, tony boutiques and chichi cafes, all steps from where King Louis XVI and thousands of others were
guillotined at the Place de la Concorde during the French Revolution.
I made my home in the center of the Right Bank, off the Rue Montorgueil. On an amazing market street
filled with patisseries, fromageries and boucheries, nothing made me happier, or feel more Parisienne, than
meandering up and down the pedestrian blocks, inhaling the irresistible smells of roasting chickens, stinky
cheeses and warm, yeasty baguettes. On more occasions than warranted, Id treat myself to a crme-filled pain
aux raisins from Stohrer, one of the oldest bakeries in Paris. Not too far away in the Marais, at a bread stand
inside the March des Enfants Rouges, the Cornet Vegetarien a sandwich of fresh greens, grated carrots and
fennel, marinated onions and thinly sliced avocado, dressed with olive oil and honey and dusted with chives and
lime zest was like nothing Id ever eaten. And the man who prepared it, Alain, a barrel-chested maestro who
was given to bursts of song and dance, always made my day.
For macarons, I learned there was only one place to go: Pierre Herm on the Left Bank. If I was alone, I
took the delicate ganache-filled meringue cookies to the Square des Missions trangres, a small spot of green in
the center of the well-to-do Rue du Bac neighborhood, and ate them in gleeful silence. But if I were bringing
friends from out of town for the petites douceurs, wed savor them together near the central basin in the Jardin du
Luxembourg, where tourists and Parisians alike crowded around to watch the motorized sailboats skate across the
water.
Back over on the Right Bank, inside the Palais Royal, I found a welcome solitude among the rows of trees
pruned into perfect squares. I loved the Technicolor flowerbeds during late summer and how the rosebushes
miraculously bloomed in winter, the buds like drops of blood against the white snow. And in the spring, the green
fields and gold dome of Les Invalides opening before me when I zipped across the Pont Alexandre III to the Left
Bank never failed to make me sigh.
As my circle of exploration expanded from the city center, I started seeing Paris itself growing in new
ways. Cashmere emporiums and Costes brothers cafes were infiltrating the Left Bank, nudging it away from
bohemian into the realm of haute bourgeois, while neighborhoods like Belleville and the Haut Marais, with
their emerging artists and galleries, infused the Right Bank with creative juice. Apparently, my staunch division
of Paris based on riverbanks wasnt so black and white. And by the time my two-year stint was up, two other
sides to Paris were luring me: the east and the west.
I was first introduced to Canal St.-Martin on Pariss east side by a friend who lived there and took me on
my maiden Vlib bike ride, guiding me past the waterways peaked iron bridges and enchanting locks where
Amlie had skipped stones to the flat and sprawling Parc de la Villette just north of the neighborhood. The
boomerang-shaped canal was once Napoleons conduit for supplying fresh water to Paris. Later, the surrounding
area became home to the working classes. But since the millennium, as my friend pointed out and I couldnt
help but notice as we wended our way through picnicking Parisians flaunting Ray-Bans, iPhones and flashy
baskets (sneakers) the quartier has attracted more and more artists and writers, young couples and hipsters (or
bobos bourgeois bohemians in Parisian parlance).

11. Personal sketch- Tells about the profile of a well-known personality. It usually features the distinctive traits of a
personality.
Example:
Character Sketch of Anne Frank
By BryantP, san jose, CA
During the era of World War II, the Nazis ruled Germany. Nazis were led by an evil mad, Adolph Hitler,
he wanted everyone who was different to be killed or imprisoned. One brave girl lived during this tragic event.
This girl became famous for her diary which later became a book. Her name was Anne Frank. Anne and her
family were Jews which meant they had to be killed or imprisoned according to Hitler. Anne and her family,
afraid to get killed or captured went in to hiding for two years. During these two tough years, Anne, a nave and a
nuisance little girl developed into a mature young lady.
Anne was a bright-minded teenager who knew what was best for her life. Hiding in a small attic from
Nazis had many rules to follow because the Frank family did not want to get caught by Nazis. During the day we
mustnt make any noise that might be heard downstairs. Anne did not like all these rules but she was still capable
of following them all. I respect Anne for her ability to respect and follow all the rules in the Secret Annex. I
would have never been able to follow all the rules. Anne knew that following the rules would save her from the
Nazis which make her a smart girl. Anne kept going strong and stayed bold during the Holocaust which is why
she is well known now. I think Anne is a girl who would have been the most successful women in her time.
Living in a small attic with a bunch of people can get annoying. Anne is a nosy and nave girl who talks
and asks many questions. Everyone in the attic tries to change her attitude by lecturing her, but Anne will only
listen to herself. I have a lot to put up with and have to pretend to be deaf in order to escape the old, much-
repeated ticking-off and warnings. I think Anne is a type of person like me because she does not listen to people
only when it is important. Im generally considered to be the most badly behaves of the three people. The
people in the attic say Anne is the least favorite because she rebels against people and is extremely talkative. The
attic is a small place to live in so people have a tiny bit of patience and gets mad easily. Anne is usually the one
who makes the whole room angry with her behavior. I can relate to Anne because we both love making people
around us mad and we both are nosy little kids.
One person who has big arguments with Anne was her mother, Mrs. Frank. Anne and her mother do not
bond well; Anne likes her father more than her mother and says she only loves her father. Finally I told Daddy
that Im much more fond of him that Mummy. Her mother gets upset because Anne never goes to her for any
help. I think Anne has the right to only love her father because throughout the book, I saw that her mother is not
greatly caring. Her mother keeps trying to get Anne to love her but Anne just does not love her mother. Her
mother understands Annes feelings but still gets upset. I dont want to be cross, love cannot be forced. Anne
keeps trying to love her mother but just cannot which shows she tries and never gives up.
Anne Frank was a young lady many people around the world respected and I am part of those many
people. She developed from an obnoxious girl to a cultivated young lady. She gave everyone vivid details about
the difficult times she had during the Holocaust. Anne wrote much informative wisdom in her well-known diary.
Anne was a brilliant writer who had the ability to get readers to picture what she wanted to say. I feel that Anne
was a brave girl because she stayed strong and did not panic during the Holocaust. Anne was a girl who changed
the world which gives her an important role in everyones life. She taught me a valuable lesson which was to
never give up and stay strong.

How to keep the Readers Interest?
Have a good title and subject to catch the interest of the reader.
Choose your purpose before writing the feature article. Feature may:
- Portray personality
- Share experience
- Entertain and convince the reader
- Give out moral lessons
- Affect readers mind
- Brings happy and sad endings for the reader
Be detailed and definite in writing.
To get the readers attention, use the word you approach.
Make use of vivid, fresh figures of speech to add colorful words in the feature article.
Use quotations or questions
Parts of a Feature Story
1. Title- Often one or two lines used for the article. It gives the reader a hint about the purpose of the article.
2. The Lead- Tis is the first paragraph of the story. It grabs the readers attention with the lead using different types
of lead -- question, quote, snapshot, etc. and finally it states your purpose. The lead is probably the most important
part of your story. This is because it has to catch the readers attention. Usually feature stories are not vital to
someone's existence, so they won't read your story if they are not hooked.

3. The Body -This is where the main highlight of the story is developed. In writing a body for feature article it must
have:
Unity and coherence for the facts, details that are developed.
Having a good transition that could avoid the changes of thought or idea.
4. The Conclusion- The conclusion is a short part of the article just like the lead but it is not as hard to write.
Usually, it restates your lead. It could also be a condensed summary of the entire article. Most of the feature
stories end with a quote. Hence, you don't need to write anything to wrap up the story, but you do need to find the
perfect quote that would really match the idea of your article. Some stories end on a positive note. This could be
inspiring, hopeful, or even make the reader smile.

Structures of Feature Writing
How to write a feature article?
The form of feature article is the same as any expository or narrative writing which has an introduction or a lead, the body

the opening of the story requires the most attention from both the reader and the writer.
There are types of lead:
o News summary lead- Emphasizing the importance using the 5 Ws who, what, where, when and why and an H
how.
- Example:
BOSTONMassachusetts Rep. Karyn Polito has blocked plans by House Democratic lawmakers to pass
a $400 million midyear spending bill for a second straight day.
Source: Boston, MA news, breaking news, sports, video | Boston.com
o Quotation lead- When introducing a quotation, choose a verb that best reflects the author's attitude toward the
material you have chosen to quote. It also gives familiar indications about the article.
- Example:
"You really don't know what freedom is until you have had to escape from terrorist captivity, says Tom
Dennon, an Air Force pilot stationed in Iraq.
Source: Website Success Through Intelligent Access to Information
o Question lead- Consists of questions to challenge the knowledge and interest of the reader.
- Example:
Have you ever wondered how you would survive if you found yourself alone in the wilderness? How
would you defend yourself against predators?
Source: Kim's Korner for Teacher Talk
o Contrast lead- It is used to point out the two opposite facts to emphasize the fact that will be the highlight of the
article.
- Example:
It doesn't look like much of a place to live. The walls are painted a dark gray-green, there are few
amenities, and the living space makes the average cheap motel room look immense.
Source: School of Journalism and Mass Communication
o Analogy lead- Likewise the contrast lead but it uses the similarity of the two facts that will be the theme of the
story.
- Example:
AMSTERDAM -- The Netherlands is considering anti-terrorism laws that make the United States' Patriot
Act look like a civil libertarian's dream come true.
Source: Journalism jobs, journalism internships & journalism awards
o Picture lead- It shows an image description of the setting of an article that is primarily serves as the introduction
of the article.
o Janus- faced lead- It can relate the past situation in future situation for the purpose of comparison with the
situation in present to have a theme for the article.
o Startling statement lead- Open with a startling statement that arouses reader interest.
- Example
Eastmont cooks serve nearly 500 pounds of pasta each.

Quiz
Fill in the blanks.
___________1.) that appear in the newspaper are intended to supplement depth and perspective in a news story. It tells
the reader a story which based on ______2.) and can never be a _______.3.) Feature begins with the ______.4.) It is also
written to inform, entertain, and explain, give an opinion and present ______5.) interest story.

ACTIVITY 1
Read and analyze the feature story. Then, identify what kind of feature story it is.
The Last Frontier
Between Borneo and Manila, there is an archipelago with a biodiversity that is virtually unmatched, both
underwater and above. Robinson Crusoe would feel right at home here on this final frontier called Palawan. With a kayak,
snorkel and hiking shoes, I cross this boundary and enter paradise. If youve ever paddled in the waters around Bali or Ko
Phuket, you would know the overwhelming feeling you get from ocean kayaking. Sitting in my canary yellow kayak,I
make my way around the northern islands of Palawan. Filipino kayaks actually require you to sit on top of them, rather
than inside them, so with every little wave, I brace myself, hoping not to fall off. Playing in the waves, I see a wooden
bangka (outrigger canoe) a hundred metres to my left. The boat, with floats on both sides to keep it stable, is coming from
the direction of Whale Island and heading to the mainland with three dark men, probably from the local Tagbanua tribe,
paddling in unison. Whale Island is just one of hundreds of islands here and its not very familiar to anyone. Its a true last
frontier. A moment ago, I had an inviting sandy beach with palm trees to my right, now, all I see are rugged rock
formations, hardly 10 metres from my boat. Where the waves crash against the rocks, I notice fossilised shells and sea
urchins. To avoid being thrown onto the rocks, I paddle hard to get to the island of Miniloc. My timing is perfect; high
tide is coming in and the pathway filled with sea urchins slowly becomes submerged. Seated on my kayak, the water
carries me through, onwards to the big lagoon of Miniloc. Its an emerald green lake, and in some places, the coral has
grown up to the surface of the water. I really need to be careful where I place my paddle. The cliffs that surround the lake
and disappear into the water are overgrown with tropical rainforest. Even if I were to succeed in climbing onto the rocks,
the density of the forest would simply make a hike an impossible undertaking. The lake itself is a true underwater zoo
with coral, turtles and even small sharks living here. These sharks will only bite off your hand, not a whole arm, the
receptionist at my resort on the other side of the island had joked. Still, I dont even come close to thinking of jumping
into the water. Im just fine bobbing about above the water. Getting out of the lagoon is a lot trickier as it turns out. I feel
the force of the current and even before I reach the mouth of the lagoon, I can feel my arms becoming heavier. When I get
back to my resort, a couple of hundred metres of paddling away, I do nothing else but enjoy the sunset and a coconut.

How to Make Corals Colorful, Part One: New Information, With Particular Attention to Blue-Green Fluorescent
Pigments
This month we'll begin to examine brand new information on effects of lighting (both intensity and spectral
quality) and how it affects coral coloration. In addition, we'll piece together some information from various research
papers, and parts of the coral pigmentation puzzle will begin to fall in place. It is very unusual for important research
papers on coral coloration to appear simultaneously, yet this happened in the later portion of 2008. Together, results of
efforts by researchers (Alieva et al., 2008, D'Angelo et al., 2008, Feldman et al., 2008, Gruber et al., 2008, Vogt et al.,
2008), along with others' (Oswald et al., 2007, Schlacher et al., 2007), offer fascinating glimpses into the mysterious
world of coral coloration, with insights offered on types of pigments and how we, as hobbyists, can manipulate the
environments of captive corals and induce coloration. The goals of these articles are to enable the hobbyist to visually
identify the color bandwidth of a particular pigment and, once identified, categorize the pigment and apply information
provided on light intensity and light color to induce, or maintain, coral coloration.
We should note that a number of factors are involved when making corals colorful. Light, of course, is critical,
but the importance of this parameter should not diminish the criticality of other co-factors such as water motion, pH,
alkalinity, nutrient loadings, etc. However, it cannot be denied that, when all other conditions are correct, light can
literally make or break colorful pigmentation. In situations where the pigment can gain or lose coloration, light energy can
bend the shape of the pigment molecule (called the 'hula twist'), sometimes resulting in coloration (photoconversion) or
coloration loss (photobleaching). When the light energy falls below a certain threshold level (either intensity or spectral
quality), the pigment molecule 'relaxes' to its normal state. In some cases, light energy breaks the molecular bond(s)
completely, leading to an irreversible change in apparent coloration.
This month, we'll examine pigment clades, and effects of light quantity and quality on the blue-green (cyan)
fluorescent pigments. But first, a review of terminology used in this and following articles is in order.

spends 52 minutes, or 11 percent of each working day, not working: in scheduled coffee breaks, unscheduled
rest breaks, at lunch beyond the normal hour and so forth. The average working woman spends only 35
minutes, or 8 percent of her working day, in such scheduled and unscheduled rest breaks. The same study found
that the amount of effort expended by women at work is 112 percent that of men. The discrepancy is more
dramatic than the statistics indicate because men earn more than women for the same type of work. The
average man in the study earned $13 an hour, compared to 9.34 for the average woman. The women tended to
hold mainly clerical jobs, but those in managerial positions also outperformed their male counterparts.

NEW YORKManny Pacquiao arrived for his press conference looking out of the ordinary. Wearing a
shiny blue suit and sporting a new haircut, he walked confidently to greet journalists.
Whatever tax troubles he may have were not apparent in his demeanor. Gone was the hangdog posture.
The world boxing champion and local politician approached the podium and went straight to the point.
I know that theres a big question mark in our first fight in 2012, so this time around we have to answer that, he
said at the press conference at New World Stages, where Top Rank announced the April 12 Pacquiao-Bradley
rematch in Las Vegas. I just want to prove to Brad about what hes saying that my killer instincts and
aggressiveness (are gone)I think hes rightmaybe Im just too kind and nice to my opponents in the ring, but
this time around I will have to make sure that I am still (on top), he added.
Pacquiao and undefeated WBO welterweight world champion Timothy Bradleys 2012 fight was a
controversial split decision marred by allegations of fixing. Bradley won the match after the 12th round, but
boxing analysts and leagues of loyal fans argued the title should have been given to Pacquiao. Oscar de la Hoya
went on to say that Bradley should have refused the title belt as Pacquiao had won the fight.
I asked Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach and Top Ranks Bob Arum what assurances they had that questionable
decisions will not happen again. Were gonna have international officials that are much bigger and better panel
of judges, Arum told The FilAm. Well, no assurance really, said Roach. Bradley said Pacquiao no longer has
those killer instincts, weve got to show him that he does. And that motivates me. I think well knock him out this
time. Im very confident that hes going to win. Roach has announced that Pacquiao will have training camps in
General Santos City in the Philippines, China and in Los Angeles. Bradleys trainer, Joel Diaz, said sharing the
ring one more time with Pacquiao was quite a privilege for his boxer. I feel there is an unfinished business, he
said. Come April 12, Pacquiao and Bradley are the ones who are gonna give the people what they want to see.
Its going to be a great fight, they both have something to prove. Manny is gonna prove that hes still in the game
and that hes still the superstar in boxing and for Bradley he has to maintain that title.
Bradley said he had long been an underrated boxer. I am excited for this fight because I embrace the
challenge, he told reporters. I love challenges and I love when people say that I cant do something cause I love
to prove them all wrong like I have been doing in my whole career. Even though Im the champion, I wanna be
the underdog because Im still set out to prove that Im one of the best fighters in the world, he continued. He
said he is out to prove that this time around, his victory against Pacquiao will be more decisive.

o Coverage story- This kind of sports article is said to be the on-the-spot coverage of an actual game or event. It
is also about games already played. Some highlights of the game should be included in the lead such as the
suggested pointers: the score outcome, significance of the results, spectacular plays, comparison of the team,
individual star, weather condition, crowd and celebration.
Example:
Rockets Beat Lakers 134-108 for 8th Straight Win
LOS ANGELES Dwight Howard thoroughly enjoyed his first road game against the team he left as a free
agent after one tumultuous and contentious season, getting 20 points and 13 rebounds in the Houston Rockets'
134-108 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night that extended their winning streak to eight.

The streak is Houston's longest since a franchise-record, 22-game run in 2007-08 under coach Rick Adelman.
James Harden scored 11 of his 29 points in the final 1:25 of the third quarter and added 11 assists.

Wesley Johnson scored 24 points for Los Angeles, and Kendall Marshall had 20 points and 16 assists. The injury-
ravaged Lakers remained tied for last place in the Western Conference with Sacramento at 18-36 and are 5-23
since Dec. 20, when they beat Minnesota to get back to the .500 mark at 13-13.

It was Howard's third game against the Lakers since leaving the organization to sign a four-year, $88 million
contract with the Rockets in July. Los Angeles offered him a five-year, $118 million deal to stay.

The eight-time All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year played 76 games last season, averaging 17.1
points and a league-best 12.4 rebounds despite residual pain from back surgery compounded by an torn labrum
in his right shoulder.

Howard's only season in Tinseltown ended with a whimper a four-game sweep by San Antonio in the first
round of the playoffs, when he was ejected from what would turn out to be his final game as a Laker for
protesting a non-call.

The sellout crowd booed Howard every time he touched the ball. It began during warmups about 45 minutes
before the game, after a few of his ex-teammates came over to say hello at midcourt. The fans then drowned out
public address announcer Lawrence Tanter before he could get Howard's name out of his mouth during the
introductions.

Less than 90 minutes before tipoff, the Lakers dealt guard Steve Blake to the Golden State Warriors for reserve
guards Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks. Coach Mike D'Antoni was still talking about Blake in the present
tense during his pregame session with reporters before the deal was consummated, and the trade left him with
only eight players in uniform and his 28th different starting lineup due to injuries to Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol,
Steve Nash, Xavier Henry and Nick Young.

Jordan Farmar returned to the lineup after missing four games because of a sore hamstring, and Jodie Meeks was
back in action after sitting out five games with a sprained right ankle.

Harden helped the Rockets build a 64-43 halftime lead with 15 points in the first game for both teams following
the All-Star break. Howard added 14 points and 10 rebounds the 10th time this season that he had a double-
double by halftime. The biggest discrepancy was in second-chance points, with Houston holding a 19-0 advantage
at the half and a 26-4 margin overall. They outrebounded the Lakers 56-32.

NOTES: Howard received a technical foul just 78 seconds into the game after dunking on Chris Kaman. ... The
Rockets were 18 for 35 on free throws, after attempting more than 50 in each of the previous two meetings.
Howard was 5 for 16 in the first one, 10 for 24 in the second one, and 2 for 6 on Wednesday. ... Bryant hasn't
played in any of the games against Houston since he and Howard became ex-teammates. In fact, he's played in
only six games altogether. The season series concludes on April 8 at Los Angeles. ... The Lakers have lost seven
games by margins of at least 20 or more points. ... Harden scored at least 30 points in each of his previous four
games against the Lakers. ... Houston overcame a double-digit deficit in each of its previous seven wins against
the Lakers, whose biggest lead in this one was just one. ... The Rockets began a five-game road trip that will end
right back here at Staples Center against the Clippers.

Example:
NU scrapes past Adamson, readies for La Salle
MANILA, Philippines National University watched as semifinals contender Far Eastern University fell at the
hands of lowly University of the Philippines Sunday.

And it appeared like a day of upsets when the Lady Bulldogs got quite a scare before eluding Adamson, 15-25,
25-23, 25-20, 34-32, to keep its pursuit of the top spot going in the UAAP Season 76 womens volleyball
tournament at the Arena in San Juan.

The players just dont want to let a close game slip away, NU coach Edjet Mabbayad told reporters in Filipino
after his squad moved half a game behind pacesetting De La Salle in the standings anew with a 12-1 card.

Dindin Santiago pumped in 21 points while Myla Pablo and Carmin Aganon added 14 apiece for NU, which
needed four cracks at match point to seal the win.

The Lady Falcons, on the other hand, muffed six chances to extend the game, before an unforced error by Faye
Guevarra sent them into a tie with Far Eastern University anew in fourth place with identical 6-7 records.

Adamson, which drew a game-high 25 points from Sheila Pineda, blew an opportunity to move into solo fourth
after FEU took a stunning fourth-set defeat at the hands of UP earlier.

Both teams went back-and-forth in the fourth set. A Marleen Cortel hit in between two blockers put the Lady
Falcons at set point for the sixth and final time, 30-29.

Mylene Paat knotted the count at 32 but he followed up her block point with a costly service error before a four
touches violation was called against Adamson to give NU the hard-earned victory.

Mae Zapanta chipped in 15 points, including two piercing hits that put the Lady Falcons at set point twice.

NU remains as the only team capable of dealing three-time defending champion La Salle its first loss that would
prevent the Lady Spikers from nailing an outright championship berth.

But Mabbayad knows his team wouldnt stand a chance if it will perform the way it did Sunday.

We wont win against La Salle if we play like this. The players need to focus more, he said.

La Salle, which has dropped a set only once in its 12-0 start so far, dominated NU in their first round meeting.
The Lady Bulldogs get to redeem themselves on Saturday when the two best teams in the league meet again at the
Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Every team has its weakness and lets just see what happens, said Mabbayad.

Structures of the Sports story
Writing about a game event is essentially the same as writing a straight news story. Like straight news, sports
stories are written in the inverted pyramid style. The main difference between sports and news writing is in the lead. A
sports lead usually emphasizes who and how of an event because sports story focuses on the action of the event, while a
straight news lead usually emphasizes who and what.
How to write a sports story?
1. Headlines- Attractive and colorful words are used in the headlines especially verbs. Actually, there are verbs that
in themselves describe the outcome of the game. Among these are: rout, shade, roll back, edge, nip, overwhelm,
clobber, whip. Sometimes, scores appear in the headlines so that it can easily catch readers attention. It gives the
reader an idea who won, against whom and by what score immediately.
2. Types of Sports Lead
5Ws lead- Sports leads normally use the 5Ws and H as the lead emphasis. Leads should include the who, what,
when, where and how. The who may be the teams involved or the names of key player. The what will normally be
the name of the sport, league or tournament. The when should be the date or day of the event, and the where
should be the location of the event. The how is usually a brief description of how the game or contest was won
and the score.
Example:
LPCNSH poured 30 baskets in the last three minutes to whip out the LPMain 70-45 at CAA National
High School yesterday morning.
Key Play Lead- It gives special significance of the game, who gives the winning team a high score and it is also a
moment of intense interest.
Example:
Jeron Teng second-half scoring binge led the DLSU Archers to a come-from-behind 94-93 victory over
the UST Growling Tigers in Wednesday night's basketball opener at Mall of Asia Arena.
Outstanding Player- The highlights of the game or the hero of the play .
Example:
Roliver Romero of Las Pinas Science High School, after 2 hours of battle over the chessboard, copped the
title of Chess Master after outwitting Las Pinas East chesser Adrian Mendez in 20 moves during the District Meet.
Analytical Approach Lead- It gives the reader the review of the game. The highlights of this straight report
include the strategies used in the game, the star player or the outstanding performer, who cause of victory or
defeat.
Example:

3. Body- In this part of sports article, it includes:
Key play and outstanding performer- the story must report who standouts the most to their opponents
Quotations from players, trainers coaches
Play-by-play account- it is seldom found in the school paper for the lack of space. The detailed event or
round-by-round account happened in the game cannot be describe.
Personalities and background on players.
The highlights of the event
Summaries of results and statistics- these are the best score for the day and may be compiled for future
reference.

How to write the Sports Story?
The score outcome- This is the most significant point in sport story because the writer has to tell the readers who
won the game.
Significance of the results- The writer has to inform the reader whether the championship match is at stake or
whether the victory evens up an old score or whether it affects the standings of the team in a game.
Spectacular plays The writer has to write the highlights of the game, important baskets or run and the time they
were executed or made.
Comparison of the teams- It tells about the condition or the players on both sides, whether one team appears to be
better condition, what department of the game the winning team excelled over the other.
Individual stars- Who were the stars of the play and how did they perform? Include their background, too.
Weather condition- Inform the readers under what condition the game was played. Was it cold, hot or was the
weather ideal for the game?
Crowd and celebration- A writer shouldnt get too involved as a cheering spectator but he can mention the crowd,
its size and behavior during the game. Was it a record crowd or was it unruly? Moreover, tell the readers whether
it is a tournament or special game.
What is a Sport Lingo?
