Headlines
A headline is a heading usually on top of an article in a newspaper.
It contains words to tell what the article is about.
It is usually in bold font to attract peoples attention to make readers to read the whole article.
Unlike any piece of literary work, news stories have no titles; they have headlines. Headlines are considered to be
the display windows of newspapers intending to catch the readers attention. Bruce Westley, author of the book entitled
"News Editing", says that writing headlines is one of the most challenging jobs of the copy desk because it has to embody
the jist of the news which need to keep the readers want to read more.
Characteristics of a headline
The way headlines are written varies from one newspaper to the other but most headlines have these common
characteristics:
Eye catching- Use words that are thought-arousing.
Believable- Do not get so wrapped up in trying to make your headline so prepped up that you become untruthful.
Easy to read- Use a font style that is readable and understandable.
Active voice- Use verbs that are in the active voice. Avoid using verbs in passive form for they make headlines
lousy.
Brief- Brevity is the key. Make your headline short and simple without compromising the essential details.
Precise and concise- Headlines should not leave false impressions to the readers.
Tips for headline writing
The headline should be constructed simply and clearly.
The first letter the first word (may it be or not a proper noun) and proper nouns should be capitalized.
Use colorful and vigorous verbs on the present form to connote freshness of the news.
Never use the word "may" for it gives a hint of uncertainty, thus stripping the authority of the news item.
Omit articles (a, an, the) and other words such as "to be" and "and". Instead use commas as substitute for the word
"and".
Use brief language. Use the shortest words possible.
Avoid using abbreviations unless widely known.
Be positive. Avoid negative words. They weaken not only the headlines but also the news stories.

Mechanics of headline writing
After having an idea what to write in your headline, the next step is to construct it in a way that it fits the space
allocation on the page. We have to consider the presentation of different sizes and kinds of type in various column widths.
A headline schedule would be handy for us to know the number of letters that can fit in a particular space allocation.

1. Crossline- This type of headline pattern is composed of a single line running over two or more columns. It is

Skills in headline writing
A good headline writer:
Is able to see the story clearly and effectively relay it to the readers without removing the essential facts and
elements.
Must convey the right perception of the story by presenting factual information in its right perception without
leaning to any inclination dictated by his own set of beliefs and biases.
Must be equipped with deep knowledge on use of different words and their proper vocabulary meanings.
Must be updated on any new word, term and expression evolving within the target cultural and geographical
group.
The headline writer must have a sharp sense in sentence structure.
Must have a sharp sense not only with the choice of words but also on how the sentences are structured..
Must not leave any room for ambiguity.
Uses words that are clear, concise and devoid of any double meanings.

Types of news stories
According to two types:
Straight new story- This type of news story is the one that are written candidly, and in direct fashion. The inform-
ation usually follows an inverted pyramid pattern wherein the details are presented from the most important to the
least important. Below is the diagram of an inverted pyramid to be used in writing a straight news story.
Soft News is opposite to what a hard news is. The best details are saved until the last part. It contains the topics
that give entertainment to people or those that gain human interest from it. Its lead contains the least important
details for the news story but as its paragraphs go by, the facts it states become more vital for the readers.

According to the approach of the readers

Human interest story- This type of news story greatly appeals to the emotion and attempts to gain a response from
the reader.
Interpretative news- This type of news story helps the reader to understand the relevance and importance of facts
of the story.
News feature- This type of news story provides an informative discussion of news events or technical subject in a
expository form.
Side-bar story- This type of news story is written briefly. It just provides some lighter aspects of an event. It is
usually seen side by side a significant news item.

reporters are assigned to make regular contacts for news. A reporter that is assigned must be responsible for the
news that develops on it. He/ she should know her sources well and be good friends with people who may provide

The lead
The beginning of a news story is called the lead. It is the most important part of the entire account. Because
newspapers are read rapidly, the opening of the story requires the most attention from both the reader and the writer. The
lead answers the questions who, what, where, why, when and how (also known as the 5 wives and 1 husband).
A good lead is short and provocative. It emphasizes the news feature, the most dramatic and the most arresting
element of the story. There are two types of leads. The summary or conventional lead and the novelty or unconditional
lead.


Summary or conventional leads
This classification of leads is the oldest known to journalists. The following are the kinds of conventional leads

1. Who lead (name feature) - names makes news especially the prominent ones. A person may be featured because
he/ she is famous or because of the facts in the story that distinguishes him/her from ordinary.

Pointers in writing a news story
1. Write a summary as soon as you have gathered all the facts.
2. Be accurate in interpreting the data that you have gathered.
3. Present facts without bias.
4. When mentioned for the first time, names should be stated in full.
5. Avoid using words that have the tendency to prejudice the reader.
6. Begin every paragraph with sentences containing significant facts.
7. Write mostly in short sentences. Keep it short and simple.
8. Do not cram.
