The Default Linux OS Installation Basis for Modification

The "default" kernel version must be verified

Later, either CPU or PSU update should be undertaken to keep the installation compliant with current
Oracle standards.

Invoke the installer:
./runInstaller
The installer initially shows settings for a default enterprise edition database configuration.
Grid Control will require customized parameters to avoid creating the sysman schema.
Check the Advanced Installation radio button and Next.

Select the Custom option radio button and Next.

The available database product components are listed, with the default components checked on the
Available Product Components screen. The Oracle Programmer component has been deselected.

Verify that the groups are properly registered on the Privileged Operating System Groups screen and

After successful installation, linking and setup, the Configuration Assistants are run, and can be tracked
on the Configuration Assistants screen. First is the Oracle Networking CA, where the listener for the

Determine a name for the listener or leave the default on the Listener Name screen.
A different name can often help keep different listeners identifiable on the same host.

Select the TCP protocol (default) on the Protocols screen, then Next.

Select Next to proceed without configuring another listener on the More Listeners? screen.

After successful configuration of the database listener, the Database Configuration Assistant starts off
with The Database Templates screen asking for database type. Select the Custom Database radio
button and then Next.

Enter the SID and Global Database Name in the Database Identification screen. The Global Database
Name may or may not use a domain suffix.

On the Management Options screen, deselect the default option to configure Enterprise Manager. This
Configure Enterprise Manager option creates the repository and web site for Data based Control, but

Set up the database passwords for the SYS and SYSTEM administrative users on the Database
Credentials screen. These can be configured to be the same or different at this time. Set the to b e the
same for the convenience of this demonstration. It is more secure to pick unique passwords for each
user, however.
Select Next when passwords and confirming values have been entered.

Leave the default File System storage option checked on the Storage Options screen for this exercise.
Notice that ASM is also accommodated.
Select Next.

recovery is desired. Do not check Enable Archiving, but note that it is an option if hot backup is

On the Database Content screen, deselect Enterprise Manager Repository, which is again provided
here for Database Control configuration and to be avoided. Also deselected here is the Oracle
Warehouse Builder option, which will not be of interest in a repository database.

Once the init parameter table is revealed, select the option to Show Advanced Parameters to expand
the list on the Initialization Parameters screen.

For example, the undo_retention parameter should be altered from 900 to the required 10800.
Select Close when finished with all parameter checks and modifications.

which are recommended. The pre-11g option is shown selected above.

The default option to enable automatic maintenance tasks should be selected on the Automatic

initialization parameters also discusses the redo log count and sizing. The addition of a fourth redo log is

Modification of the default redo log definition (of which there are three) is also required on the Database
Storage screen. When all existing redo log definitions have been altered to the recommended 100 MB,

Invoke the patchset installer with the runInstaller utility from the Disk1 directory at the top of the

screen.

window will result if this data is not provided.
Select Next when finished.

A check of the database Oracle Home is done on the Product-Specific Prerequisite Checks screen to
ensure the inventory can take the update.

Review the patchset installation summary and select Install, if no changes are required on the patchsets
Summary page.

Select username from dba_users;
Shows the user set created on installation using the settings shown in this document. Notice that
sysman and mgmt_view have not been created, so the database is ready for a Grid Control repository.
