Example:
Jessica, Jimmie and Joan love to eat Mandarin oranges. During the Chinese New Year festive
season, the three girls went for Eat below 5 minutes competition at a carnival. The ratios of
oranges eaten by the three girls are 2:5:3.

If Jessica ate 12 oranges at the competition, what is the total number of oranges eaten by the 3
girls?

Sol:

Jessica : Jimmie : Joan
2 : 5 : 3
2x : 5x : 3x

2x =12
X = 6

Total oranges = 2x + 5x + 3x = 10x = 10 (6) = 60 oranges


Example:
The Jacksons family consists of 3 children Josh, Bill and Jim. Given that the age ratio between
Josh and Jim are 2:5 while the age ratio between Bill and Jim is 2:3. If Josh is 6 years old, how
old is Bill ?

Sol:

Josh : Bill : Jim
2 : : 5 multiply by 3 to achieve 15
: 2 : 3 multiply by 5 to achieve 15
6 : 10 : 15
6x : 10x : 15x

6x = 6
x = 1

Bill = 10x = 10(1)=10
