Tool Deployment Strings
Tool Deployment Strings
Wireline Operations - Toolstring
Wireline Toolstring
A wireline toolstring is essential for the effective
manipulation of sub-surface flow controls being
deployed from surface on wireline, into the well.
By controlling the direction of tool travel at surface,
the toolstring operator provides the impact loads
required to manipulate the devices being deployed.
This operation is referred to as "Jarring Action".
The toolstring also provides the weight required to
overcome friction and pressure differential within
the stuffing box, allowing the tools to descend into
the well.
Cromar wireline toolstrings are supplied either with
conventional threaded connections or with
proprietary quick release connections.
Typical Wireline Toolstring
A typical wireline toolstring consists of the following
components:
Wireline Rope Socket:
attaches the wireline to the toolstring.
Wireline Stem Bar(s):
provides the weight required to create an
effective jarring impact.
Wireline Knuckle Joint(s):
aligns the tools in the well, preventing them
from hanging up; improves the jarring action.
Wireline Mechanical Jar(s):
acts like a sliding hammer, utilising the weight
of the stem bars to convey a powerful
jarring impact.
Wireline Tool:
carries out the particular service required
by the operator.

Slickline Rope Sockets
Slickline Rope Sockets
Product code: 124
Disc & Spring Rope Socket
Cromar Disc & Spring Rope Sockets are used to
attach wireline to the toolstring and are
predominately used with wireline sizes up to and
including 0.092. The rope socket assembly consists
of a body with external fishing neck, spring, guide
and wire carrier.
The wireline is passed through the body, spring and
guide before being wrapped tightly around the wire
carrier. The short end of the wireline is firmly
wrapped around the long end of the wire carrier
using twelve to fifteen close wraps. A clean break
made close to the last wrap allows the spring and
guide to pass over the wraps. The knot is then
installed into the body.
Pear Drop Rope Socket
Cromar Pear Drop Rope Sockets are used to attach
wireline to the toolstring and are predominately used
with wireline sizes from 0.092 to 0.125. The rope
socket assembly consists of a body with an external
fishing neck, sleeve and a brass wedge (pear drop)
which is grooved to accommodate the wire and comes
complete with a securing grub screw.
The wireline is passed through the body and sleeve
and wrapped around the groove in the pear drop. The
pear drop is then pulled tightly up into the matching
taper on the sleeve. The pear drop knot is then
installed into the body.
Pear Drop rope sockets have to be ordered to suit the
wire size being deployed.

cables to the toolstring and are predominately used
with cable sizes up to and including 5/16. The rope
socket assembly consists of a body with an external
fishing neck, threaded bottom sub and cable clamp
complete with set screws.
The cable is passed through the body into the cable
clamp and secured into a recess using three set screws.
When weight is applied, wedge shaped contour jaws
will secure the cable in the clamp.
Slip Rope Socket
Cromar Slip Rope Sockets are used to attach braided
cables to the toolstring and are predominately used
with cable sizes up to and including 5/16. The rope
socket assembly consists of a body with external
fishing neck, threaded bottom sub and a slip carrier

Roller Wireline Stem Bar
Cromar Roller Wireline Stem Bars are designed to
replace conventional stem bars for operations in
deviated well bores. The rollers on the stem bar
run along the underside wall of the tubing. The use
of rollers greatly reduces the friction that
conventional stem bars would encounter.
Roller stem bars are conventional sinker bars,
modified with milled slots to accommodate simple
roller wheels. The wheels run on high tensile steel
axle bolts, which are locked in position by roll pins.
Cromar Roller Stem Bars are available in various
diameters and lengths. They are supplied with
industry standard pin by box connections complete
with fishing necks. Wheel diameters are sized as
required to suit the tubing.
When ordering, please specify required roller
size.

Link Wireline Jar
Cromar Link Wireline Jars, often referred to as
"spang jars" or "mechanical jars", are designed to
act like a sliding hammer, utilizing the weight of
the stem bars located immediately above, to convey
powerful jarring impacts. Upward and downward
impacts (jarring actions) are achieved by controlling
the direction and speed of the wireline at surface.
The effect of a given jarring action will depend on
the speed of movement, stem weight, the jars
stroke length, tubing size and deviation, fluid
viscosity and well pressure.
Link jars consist of two sections that are linked
together like a chain. Both halves of the jar are free
to extend or collapse over a controlled stroke length.
Standard stroke lengths are 20", 24" and 30".
Cromar Link Jars are available in various diameters
and stroke lengths. They are supplied with industry
standard pin by box connections complete with
fishing necks.

Product code: 146
Hydraulic Wireline Jar
Cromar Hydraulic Wireline Jars are normally situated
above a set of mechanical link jars.
They are designed to deliver a controlled upward
impact load during wireline operations. The closed
hydraulic system within the jar makes it possible
for the jarring action to be controlled within a broad
range, from a very light impact to one of substantial
force.
During normal operations, a controlled pull is applied
to the wireline, which lifts the top sub and mandrel
upward, while the piston is momentarily held back
by the hydraulic fluid. This impeding action allows
an adequate pull to be applied on the line to achieve
the required jarring intensity. When the piston
passes from the cylinder bore into the larger by-
pass bore, the fluid resistance is reduced, allowing
the mandrel to accelerate upwards and strike the
middle body insert which conveys the jarring force
to the toolstring.
The jar is closed and reset for repeat operation by
slacking off toolstring weight, which telescopes the
mandrel back into the tool. A spring loaded check
valve (valve plug) opens to allow oil to flow through
the piston easily as the mandrel moves downwards.
A balance piston at the lower end of the middle
body is free to move up and down to compensate
for the internal volume changes and equalize internal
and external pressures as the jar is operated.
Cromar Hydraulic Jars are available in various
diameters and are supplied with industry standard
pin by box connections complete with fishing necks.

Wireline Jars - Spring
Product code: 372
Spring Wireline Jar
Cromar Spring Wireline Jars are normally situated
above a set of wireline link jars. They are designed
to deliver a high upward impact load during heavy
duty wireline operations.
The spring wireline jar is a simple mechanical tool
which actuates when the operator applies a steady
pull to the wireline. The pulling action causes the
spring to compress fully, allowing locking balls to
release and free the inner mandrel which then
accelerates upwards and strikes the top sub, creating
an upward jarring force.
Spring jars are just as effective as hydraulic jars.
Because they are completely mechanical, spring
jars do not suffer from the hydraulic jars inherent
problem of gassing up and so they are practically
maintenance free.
When the wireline is not particularly elastic, or
where jarring has to be carried out near to the
surface, a Cromar accelerator (stretch simulator)
should be used to provide the jar with the necessary
energy.
It is important to note that the force required to
actuate the spring jar must be at least equal to the
spring force. Therefore the line pull at surface must
overcome the spring force plus the buoyant weight
of the toolstring and wire, as well as frictional
forces. When applying the required line pull, it is
possible that the yield strength of the wireline may
be exceeded. This situation must be considered
beforehand in order to avoid breaking the wireline.
For instance, in deep wells, the lightest spring should
always be fitted.
Cromar Spring Jars are available in various diameters
and are supplied with industry standard pin by box
connections complete with fishing necks.

Tubular Wireline Jar
Cromar Tubular Wireline Jars are designed to act
like a siding hammer, utilizing the weight of the
stem bars located immediately above, to convey
powerful jarring impacts. Upward and downward
impacts (jarring actions) are achieved by controlling
the direction and speed of the wireline at surface.
The effect of a given jarring action will depend on
the speed of movement, stem weight, the jars
stroke length, tubing size and deviation, fluid
viscosity and well pressure.
Tubular jars are used during fishing operations,
when the jarring action of standard link type jars
could be impeded by wire, debris or other foreign
matter in the tubing. Tubular jars can also be used
with toolstrings being deployed inside large tubing
or casings, where conventional link jars tend to lock
up and buckle at full stroke.
Cromar Tubular Jars are available in various
diameters and stroke lengths. They are supplied
with industry standard pin by box connections
complete with fishing necks.

Knuckle Joint
The Cromar Knuckle Joint is designed to provide
flexibility within the wireline toolstring. One or
more knuckle joints can be inserted into the toolstring
at the operators discretion, to meet operational
requirements.
A knuckle joint is particularly useful when it is
situated below the jars, to provide angular movement
between the toolstring and the running or pulling
tool. This is especially advantageous during side
pocket orientation with kick over tools.
Cromar Knuckle Joints are available in various
diameters. They are equipped with industry standard
pin by box connections and double fishing necks.
Knuckle Jar
Similar in design to knuckle joints, the Cromar
Knuckle Jar incorporates an extended ball mandrel
and ball mandrel body. This small internal stroke
allows the knuckle jar to be used for light jarring
operations.
Cromar knuckle jars are available in various
diameters and come with industry standard pin by
box connections. All Cromar knuckle jars come with
double fishing necks.

Shock Absorber-149
Accelerator- 148
Shock Absorber
The Cromar Shock Absorber is designed to dampen
impact shock loads that can occur during wireline
deployment and so prevent damage to sensitive
instrumentation being run on the toolstring.
The shock absorber consists of a main body, top sub
(fishing neck), bottom sub, inner mandrel and upper
and lower absorber springs. The lower spring is
heavier than the upper one, as it has to sustain the
tool weight. The floating action of the mandrel
against the springs dampens the shock loads.
Cromar Shock Absorbers are available in various
sizes, for H2S and standard service.
They can be supplied in stainless steel on request.
Accelerator
Cromar Wireline Accelerators are designed to
simulate line stretch when jarring at shallow depths
with spring or hydraulic power jars. Positioned above
the jars in the toolstring, the accelerator assists in
maintaining a constant pull as the power jar opens.
After the jar has fired the spring(s) in the accelerator
absorbs the recoil action of the toolstring on the
wire, releasing the energy stored within the spring(s).
Cromar accelerators are available for all toolstring
sizes, with industry standard pin by box connections
complete with fishing necks.

Anti Blow-Up Tool
The Cromar Anti Blow-Up Tool is designed to be
used in the toolstring when downhole instrumentation
tools are deployed in a well with multi zoned
completions.
The anti blow-up tool prevents toolstrings from
being blown up the production tubing by excessive
cross flow between zones.
The tool is designed such that in the event of its
being blown upwards, the bottom sub lifts up and
drives out two arms that lock into the tubing wall,
stopping any further upward travel. Subsequently,
a controlled pull on the wireline will lift up the top
sub and retract the arms to release the toolstring,
Cromar Anti Blow-up Tools are available to suit all
production tubing sizes from 2 3/8 through 5 1/4.
They are supplied with industry standard pin by box
connections complete with fishing necks.

Tubing End Locators
Tubing End Locators
Product code: 137
Tubing End Locator
The Cromar Tubing End Locator is designed to locate
the end of the production tubing, allowing the total
depth to be measured.
A tubing end locator consists of a solid body with a
milled pocket to accommodate the latch finger. The
latch finger is spring loaded and retained by a latch
pin. A shear pin is installed below the latch finger,
which retains the finger at 90 degrees.
During wireline operations, once the tubing end locator
has exited the production tubing into the casing, the
spring loaded latch finger falls down on to the shear
pin. When retrieving the toolstring, the latch finger
prevents entry into the production tubing. At this
point the depth is recorded. After shearing the pin
the latch finger falls back into the pocket and the
toolstring is retrieved.
Cromar Tubing End Locators are available to suit all
tubing sizes. They are supplied with industry standard
pin by box connections complete with fishing necks.

The Cromar Dump Bailer is designed to allow
chemicals such as acids or other fluids, to be spotted
on top of any subsurface device in the well.
The dump fluid is installed in the bailer at surface.
The bailer is then run into the well on wireline,
down to the depth of the subsurface device. It is
functioned by jarring down to shear a pin, which in
turn allows A plunger to shear a rupture disc, allowing
fluids to discharge.
Cromar Dump Bailers are available in various sizes

Hydrostatic Bailer
The Cromar Piston Hydrostatic Bailer is designed to
remove debris which has settled on top or around
a subsurface control within the well, preventing
retrieval by regular wireline operations. A hydrostatic
bailer is used when debris cannot be removed with
a normal pump bailer assembly.
The hydrostatic bailers upper section consists of a
chamber sealed at surface atmospheric pressure,
complete with a relief plug at the top and shear
piston subassembly on the bottom. The piston is
pinned to the bottom sub prior to deployment.
The bailer is activated by jarring downward, which
shears the pin on the piston. Well pressure then
causes the piston to accelerate upward, creating a
suction which draws the debris into the tool.
Cromar Hydrostatic Bailers are available in various
sizes and are supplied with industry standard pin
connections complete with fishing necks.

C-GS Pulling Tool
Product code: 043
C-GS Pulling Tool
The Cromar C-GS Pulling Tool is designed to deploy
and retrieve sub-surface controls with internal fishing
necks.
The C-GS pulling tool is of the jar/shear down to
release type. It can be converted to a C-GR jar/
shear up to release tool, by installing a C-GU shear
up adapter. The C-GR type of tool is recommended
where downward jarring on the sub-surface control
is required prior to pulling.
The C-GS pulling tool consists of a cylinder complete
with top sub, inner core and spring loaded dog set.
Once the tool has been engaged on an external
fishing neck, a downward jarring action will shear
a pin to release the spring loaded dogs and allow
the tool to be retrieved.
Larger sizes of C-GS pulling tools have a pinning
ring. The pinning ring compresses the main spring,
allowing the operator to install the shear pin safely.
Once the shear pin has been installed, the pinning
ring must be backed off prior to deployment.
C-GS pulling tools are available in various sizes.
They are supplied with industry standard pin
connections complete with fishing necks.
Please refer to C-GU adapter section.

C-GU Shear Up Adapter
C-GU Shear Up Adapter
Product code: 056
C-GU Shear Up Adapter
The Cromar C-GU Shear Up Adapter is designed to
convert a standard C-GS pulling tool (jar/shear down
to release) into a C-GR pulling tool (jar/shear up
to release).
The C-GU adapter can be installed on a C-GS pulling
tool with the shear pin in place. Once installed, the
shear pin in the C-GS is removed and the whole
assembly is categorized as a C-GR type, operating
with a shear up action.
The C-GR tool is recommended where downward
jarring on the sub-surface control is required prior
to pulling.
C-GU shear up adapters are available to suit all C-
GS sizes of pulling tool. They are supplied with
industry standard pin connections complete with
fishing necks.
Please refer to C-GS pulling tool section.

C-BB & C-BE Pulling Tools
Cromar C-BB and C-BE Pulling Tools are designed to
engage external fishing necks on sub-surface controls
within the well. The C-B design of pulling tool has
no skirts and the dogs are exposed, making this type
of tool particularly useful for engaging fishing necks
fouled by sand, trash or other debris.
The C-BB and C-BE pulling tools are identical except
for the length of the dogs. The C-BE model has
longer dogs, which increases the effective reach of
the tool.
The C-BB pulling tool can also be used to pull W, B

C-C1 & C-J Running Tools
C-C1 & C-J Running Tools
Product code:
C-C1-086
C-CJ-074
C-C1 Running Tool
The Cromar C-C1 Running Tool is designed to deploy
and set sub-surface flow controls with external
fishing necks.
When dressed with a thread protector ring, for
applications that do not require a No-Go on the tool
itself, the C-C1 is used to deploy flow controls
equipped with W, Z and TS lock mandrels.
By removing the thread protector ring and installing
a properly sized locating ring, the tool is converted
to a No-Go type. The locating ring acts as a positive
tool positioner when deploying flow controls
equipped with S lock mandrels.
The Cromar C-C1 running tool consists of a sub
complete with fishing neck, a pin connection, shear
pin holes for retaining the lock mandrel, an internal
thread to accommodate model A shanks, and a
thread protector or No-Go ring.
C-J Running Tool
The Cromar C-J Running Tool is designed to deploy
and set sub-surface flow controls equipped with S,
N, E, J, P and F lock mandrels.
The C-J running tool consists of a sub complete with
fishing neck, a pin connection, shear pin holes for
retaining the lock mandrel and an internal thread to
accommodate a prong.
Lock mandrels being deployed by the C-J running
tool are located and set by downward jarring. Once
the lock mandrel has been set in the nipple,
subsequent upward jarring will release the running
tool from it.

C-W & C-Z-6 Running Tools
Product code:
C-W-077
C-Z-6-082
C-W Running Tool
The Cromar C-W Running Tool is designed to deploy
and set Type B, C and W slip lock mandrels.
The C-W running tool consists of a top sub complete
with fishing neck and pin connection, a middle sub,
a bottom sub, a collet set and an inner core.
When the desired setting depth has been attained,
The toolstring is picked up to set the slips and
expand the locking element into the tubing wall.
Further upward jarring secures the mandrel in a
locked position, expanding the packing element
further, prior to shearing the pin and releasing the
running tool from the lock.
C-Z-6 Running Tool
The Cromar C-Z-6 Running Tool is designed to deploy
and set subsurface flow controls equipped with DB-
5 lock mandrels for landing in the corresponding
No-Go landing nipples.
The C-Z-6 running tool consists of a top sub complete
with fishing neck and pin connection, an inner
mandrel (plunger), an outer mandrel (plunger ring)
and bottom sub (lock pin retainer). A garter tell
tale spring is provided to provide a positive indication
that the lock mandrel has set correctly in the No-
Go landing nipple.
The lock mandrel being deployed by the C-Z-6
running tool is located and set by jarring downward.
Once the mandrel has been correctly set in the
landing nipple, the running tool is then released
from the lock mandrel by jarring upward.

C-X & C-R Running Tools
C-X & C-R Running Tools
Product code:
C-X-078
C-R-076
C-X Running Tool
The Cromar C-X Running Tool is designed to deploy and
set sub-surface flow controls equipped with X and XN lock
mandrels, landing in corresponding selective or No-Go
landing nipples.
When the running tool is set in the selective position, the
keys of the lock mandrel are fully retracted, allowing the
flow control to pass through landing nipples of a similar
size and type. After passing through the desired nipple,
an upward pull trips the locating dogs on the running
tool, moving the keys on the lock mandrel to the control
position. The lock mandrel is then lowered back into the
landing nipple, where the keys will locate in the profile.
The lock mandrel is then set by jarring downward.
A subsequent upward jarring action will release the tool
from the lock mandrel.
If the running tool is set In the non-selective position,
the lock mandrel will locate in the first corresponding
nipple in the tubing string.
C-R Running Tool
The Cromar C-R Running Tool is designed to deploy and
set sub-surface flow controls equipped with R and RN
lock mandrels, landing in corresponding selective or No-
Go landing nipples.
subsequent upward jarring action will release the tool
from the lock mandrel. In the non-selective position, the
lock mandrel will locate in the first corresponding nipple
in the tubing string.

Wireline Operations - Running Tools
C-CST Check Set & C-RX Running Tools
C-CST Check Set & C-RX Running Tools
Product code:
C-CST-080
C-RX-079
C-CST Check Set Tool
The Cromar C-CST Check Set Tool is designed to
allow the operator to confirm that sub-surface flow
controls, equipped with X and R lock mandrels, have
been correctly landed and set in their corresponding
landing nipples.
The C-CST check set tool consists of a top sub
complete with fishing neck and pin connection, and
a housing with shear pin cover and inner core.
The check set tool is deployed into the well and
located in the lock mandrel. Downward jarring is
then applied to establish that the lock mandrel has
been set. Once the tool has been retrieved from
the well, the sheared pin provides evidence that
the lock mandrel was correctly set.
When ordering, please specify lock mandrel size
and type.
C-RX Running Tool
The Cromar C-RX Running Tool is designed to deploy
and set sub-surface flow controls equipped with X
and R lock mandrels. This tool is generally used for
installing a wireline retrievable safety valve in the
uppermost landing nipple.
The C-RX running tool allows the lock mandrel to
be deployed with its keys set either in the control
position or in the selective position.
When a lock mandrel is being deployed into a
selective (non No-Go) landing nipple, the keys must
be in the control position (keys out). This position
enables the tool to be set in the first corresponding
nipple.
When a lock mandrel is being deployed into a No-
Go landing nipple, the keys must be in the selective
position (keys fully retracted). This position enables
the tool to be set in the corresponding No-Go landing
nipple.
C-RX running tools are fitted with tell tale snap rings
and can be fitted with an upper shear pin as required.
Both items will provide the operator with a positive
indication that the lock mandrel has been set
correctly.

C-B Positioning (Shifting) Tool
C-B Positioning (Shifting) Tool
Product code: 100
C-B Positioning (Shifting) Tool
The Cromar C-B Positioning (Shifting) Tool is designed
to shift inner sleeves to their open or closed positions,
in XA, RA, XO and XD sliding side doors.
The C-B positioning tool locates into recesses in the
upper or lower end of the sliding side doors internal
sleeve. Upward or downward jarring action will then
shift the sleeve to the desired position. The tool
will release automatically, once the sleeve has
travelled to its optimum position.
In the event that the sleeve cannot be shifted, the
tool can be released by shearing the pin, whereby
the keys will retract and the tool can be recovered.
Selective keys are available, which do not incorporate
the automatic release profile and rely totally on
the shear pin as the release mechanism.
The C-B positioning tool will not pass through a
position 1# type S landing nipple.

C-BO Selective Positioning
(Shifting) Tool
The Cromar C-BO Selective Positioning (Shifting)
Tool is designed to select and shift (downward only)
the inner sleeves of XA, RA, XO and XD sliding side
doors. The C-BO tool can be used in conjunction
with a standard C-B positioning tool.
The C-BO selective positioning tool incorporates a
selective control mechanism similar in design to the
one used on C-X and C-R running tools, which holds
the keys in the retracted position when running
through sliding side doors of a similar size and type.
After passing through the desired sliding side door,
an upward pull will trip the locating dogs, moving
the keys to the control position. Downward jarring
action will then shift the sleeve to the desired open
position. The tool will release automatically once
the sleeve has travelled to its optimum position.

C-L Kickover Tool
The Cromar C-L Kickover Tool is designed to deploy,
set and retrieve valves from 2 and 2 1/4 MMG,
M, KBM and KBMG side pocket mandrels.
The C-L kickover tool is used in conjunction with
standard side pocket valve running and pulling tools.
It is important to note, however, that a 4 1/2
spacer bar must be deployed when installing side
pocket valves in MMG and MM mandrels.
Once located in the mandrel, an upward movement
of the kickover tool will move the main body
downward until it is engaged by the locking dogs.
Further downward movement of the tool into the
mandrel will then cause the arms to kick over
and align with the mandrel pocket.
The C-L kickover tool consists of a top sub complete
with fishing neck, pin connection and integral knuckle
joint, inner mandrel, main body assembly with two
spring loaded locking dogs and a bottom sub with
a box connection.

C-OM-1 Kickover Tool
The Cromar C-OM-1 Kickover Tool is designed to

The C-OM-1 kickover tool is used in conjunction with
standard and special (for deviated wells) side pocket
valve running and pulling tools.
Once the tool has been located in position below
the mandrel, an upward movement causes the
locating finger to engage in the orientation slot,
which turns the tool to correctly align it with the
pocket. Continued upward movement then causes
the arm to kick over into the mandrel pocket.
The C-OM-1 kickover tool consists of a top sub
complete with fishing neck and pin connection, an
upper body with locator finger and kickover springs,
a lower body with arm assembly with a box
connection and an arm housing (tray), which protects
equipment being deployed and retrieved from the

A knuckle joint should be run above this tool to
assist with orientation. Spacer bars are required
when retrieving valves from MMG side pocket
mandrels.

Split Skirt Wirefinder (One Piece)
The Cromar Split Skirt Wirefinder is designed to
locate and ball the upper end of the broken wireline
in the well bore during fishing operations. The wire
ball can then be engaged by a wireline grab and
retrieved.
The wirefinder is deployed into the well attached
to a light fishing toolstring by means of a dummy
rope socket and pulling tool. Once the wirefinder
has located and set down over the end of the broken
wireline, downward jarring action will cause the
wire to be bailed or bent over into the tubing,
forming a ball.

Expandable Split Skirt Wirefinder
The Cromar Expandable Split Skirt Wirefinder is
designed to locate and ball the upper end of the
wire in the well bore. The ball can then be engaged
by a wireline grab and retrieved.
Similar in design to the conventional type of
wirefinder, the expandable wirefinder has an external
No-Go sleeve that retains the fingers while the tool
is being deployed into the well. The No-Go sleeve
is then landed and sheared out, releasing and
expanding the fingers. This action allows the tool
to be deployed from a smaller tubing into a larger
one.
Care should be taken to correctly size this tool to
the No-Go nipple located at the intersection between
the larger and the smaller tubing.
The expandable wirefinder is a non-stock item which
is manufactured to customer specifications for each
particular application.
When ordering please specify Cromar product
number and actual OD of tool required.

Wireline Operations - Fishing Tools
Wire Grabs & Center Spears
Wire Grabs & Center Spears
Product code:
Wire Grab-176
Centre Spear-177
Wire Grab
The Cromar Wire Grab is designed to retrieve a
broken wireline during fishing operations, after a
split skirt wirefinder has been deployed to locate
and ball the upper end of the wire in the well bore.
The wire grab consists of a top sub complete with
fishing neck and pin connection and a body with
two or three bendable prongs. Each prong has several
pointed barbs welded on the inner side to form
hooks. The flexible design allows the operator to
bend the grab prong ends to suit the tubing ID which
helps to prevent the wire grab from bypassing the
broken line.
The wire grab is deployed into the well attached to
a fishing toolstring by means of a dummy rope socket
and pulling tool.
When ordering, please specify Cromar product
number and actual OD of tool required.
Centre Spear
The Cromar Centre Spear is designed as a last
resort fishing tool, to retrieve broken wireline from
the well. This tool is not recommended for general
wireline fishing operations. The centre spear should
only be used in cases where the wire is balled up
so badly that it is impossible to get hold of it with
a standard two-pronged grab.
Once wire is wrapped around this tool, it cannot be
released until it reaches the surface.
The centre spear is deployed into the well attached
to a fishing toolstring by means of a dummy rope
socket and pulling tool.

Wireline Operations - Fishing Tools
Wireline Retriever
Wireline Retriever
Product code: 263
Wireline Retriever
The Cromar Wireline Retriever is designed to locate
and retrieve cut or broken slickline or small diameter
braided cables from the well bore, during fishing
operations.
The wireline retriever consists of a top sub complete
with fishing neck and pin connection, mandrel, body,
spear point, slip and split skirt. The retriever may
be dressed with the appropriate sized split skirt to
make it adaptable to various sizes of tubing.
In operation, the wireline retriever is deployed into
the well on a fishing toolstring. As it descends, well
fluid and friction cause the skirt to ride up on the
mandrel, exposing the spear point and the gap
between the spear and the skirt. Tool contact with
the broken line is indicated by a loss of running-in
string weight. Stopping causes the skirt to move
down the mandrel, wedging the caught line. The
wireline is then pulled up, securely wedging the
broken line into the tool.
Wireline retriever bodies are available in 1 1/2 OD
& 1 7/8 OD sizes.
When ordering, please specify Cromar product
number, body size and OD of skirt required.

Skirted Magnet
The Cromar Skirted Magnet is designed to retrieve
ferrous debris from the top of tools in the well.
The skirted magnet consists of a top sub body
complete with fishing neck and pin connection,
magnet and skirt. The skirt is manufactured from
a non-magnetic material and has two main functions,
namely to prevent debris being dislodged during
retrieval and to prevent hindrance during running
and pulling, by keeping the magnet off the tubing
wall.
When ordering, please specify Cromar product
number and actual OD of tool required
Tar Baby
The Cromar Tar Baby is designed to retrieve loose
small objects from low temperature shallow wells.
Similar in design to a conventional lead impression
block, the tar baby consists of a top sub body complete
with fishing neck and pin connection. Internally the
body is filled with an appropriate type of tar to suit
the well temperature conditions.

Wireline Operations - Fishing Tools
Rotary Wireline Cutters
Rotary Wireline Cutters
Product code:
Standard Cutter-156
Interface Cutter-155
Rotary Wireline Cutters
The Cromar Rotary Wireline Cutter is designed to cut solid
wirelines (0.092, 0.108 & 0.125 OD) or swabbing cables
(3/16 & 7/32 OD) when the toolstring becomes stuck
in the well.
Standard Cutter
The standard cutter is deployed into the well under its
own weight, guided by the wireline or cable. When the
cutter strikes the rope socket on the stuck toolstring, the
shock is transmitted to the rotating knife, which cuts the
wire. The rotating action of the knife pushes a tapered
slip upwards, wedging and locking the wireline or cable
onto the cutter. This locking action allows the cutter to
be recovered to surface on the wireline.
Interface Cutter
The Cromar Interface Wireline Cutter should be used
when there is a risk of the wireline or cable being cut
prematurely.
The cutter is deployed into the well under its own weight,
guided by the wireline or cable and lands on the rope
socket of the stuck toolstring. A flat bottom go-devil
drop bar is then deployed to operate the cutter. The drop
bar strikes the inner sleeve of the cutter, which drives
downwards to rotate the knife, which in turn shears the
wireline or cable. The rotating action of the knife pushes
a tapered slip upwards, wedging and locking the wireline
or cable onto the cutter. This locking action allows both
the cutter and the drop bar to be recovered to surface
on the wireline.
After each operation, the cutter must be stripped down,
thoroughly cleaned and inspected for wear or damage.
Centralisers
It is important to deploy cutters and drop bars with
appropriately sized slip over centralisers fitted. This
prevents the cutter or drop bar from wedging with the
lost toolstring.

Angled and Flat Bottomed Go Devils
The Cromar Go Devil is designed to cut and retrieve
wireline from a stuck toolstring. It is manufactured
from a solid length of bar and has an integral wireline
socket head with a milled slot and guide to
accommodate and retain the wire.
All Cromar go-devils are provided with locating
grooves to accommodate slipover centralisers.
Cromar supplies two types of go-devils, designed
for two different situations:
Angled Bottom Go Devil
In situations where the stuck toolstrings rope socket
is clean, an angled bottom go-devil can be deployed,
which will cut the wire when it strikes the rope
socket.
An angled bottom go-devil is only used in a well
where fluid is present in order to slow the descent.
Appropriately sized slipover centralisers are fitted,
to prevent the go devil from wedging with the stuck
toolstring or causing tubing damage when it kicks-
off.
When ordering please confirm wire/cable
size required.

C-GO Fishing Socket
The Cromar C-GO Fishing Socket, sometimes referred
to as a Gravel Gerty, was originally designed to
extract equalising prongs from sub-surface flow
controls. However, its full dog engagement, large
reach and non-release features make it ideal as a
fishing device for latching tools with badly damaged
fishing necks.
By installing an extended cylinder, the C-GO tool
becomes a very useful tool for engaging a fishing
neck, below a parted tool.
