O p e r a t i o n s Tool Deployment Strings Tool Deployment Strings Wireline Operations - Toolstring Wireline Toolstring A wireline toolstring is essential for the effective manipulation of sub-surface flow controls being deployed from surface on wireline, into the well. By controlling the direction of tool travel at surface, the toolstring operator provides the impact loads required to manipulate the devices being deployed. This operation is referred to as "Jarring Action". The toolstring also provides the weight required to overcome friction and pressure differential within the stuffing box, allowing the tools to descend into the well. Cromar wireline toolstrings are supplied either with conventional threaded connections or with proprietary quick release connections. Typical Wireline Toolstring A typical wireline toolstring consists of the following components: Wireline Rope Socket: attaches the wireline to the toolstring. Wireline Stem Bar(s): provides the weight required to create an effective jarring impact. Wireline Knuckle Joint(s): aligns the tools in the well, preventing them from hanging up; improves the jarring action. Wireline Mechanical Jar(s): acts like a sliding hammer, utilising the weight of the stem bars to convey a powerful jarring impact. Wireline Tool: carries out the particular service required by the operator. O p e r a t i o n s Wireline Operations - Toolstring Slickline Rope Sockets Slickline Rope Sockets Product code: 124 Disc & Spring Rope Socket Cromar Disc & Spring Rope Sockets are used to attach wireline to the toolstring and are predominately used with wireline sizes up to and including 0.092. The rope socket assembly consists of a body with external fishing neck, spring, guide and wire carrier. The wireline is passed through the body, spring and guide before being wrapped tightly around the wire carrier. The short end of the wireline is firmly wrapped around the long end of the wire carrier using twelve to fifteen close wraps. A clean break made close to the last wrap allows the spring and guide to pass over the wraps. The knot is then installed into the body. Pear Drop Rope Socket Cromar Pear Drop Rope Sockets are used to attach wireline to the toolstring and are predominately used with wireline sizes from 0.092 to 0.125. The rope socket assembly consists of a body with an external fishing neck, sleeve and a brass wedge (pear drop) which is grooved to accommodate the wire and comes complete with a securing grub screw. The wireline is passed through the body and sleeve and wrapped around the groove in the pear drop. The pear drop is then pulled tightly up into the matching taper on the sleeve. The pear drop knot is then installed into the body. Pear Drop rope sockets have to be ordered to suit the wire size being deployed. Upward and downward impacts (jarring actions) are achieved by controlling the direction and speed of the wireline at surface. The effect of a given jarring action will depend on the speed of movement, stem weight, the jars stroke length, tubing size and deviation, fluid viscosity and well pressure. Link jars consist of two sections that are linked together like a chain. Both halves of the jar are free to extend or collapse over a controlled stroke length. Standard stroke lengths are 20", 24" and 30". Cromar Link Jars are available in various diameters and stroke lengths. O p e r a t i o n s Wireline Operations - Toolstring Wireline Jars - Hydraulic Wireline Jars - Hydraulic Product code: 146 Hydraulic Wireline Jar Cromar Hydraulic Wireline Jars are normally situated above a set of mechanical link jars. They are designed to deliver a controlled upward impact load during wireline operations. The closed hydraulic system within the jar makes it possible for the jarring action to be controlled within a broad range, from a very light impact to one of substantial force. During normal operations, a controlled pull is applied to the wireline, which lifts the top sub and mandrel upward, while the piston is momentarily held back by the hydraulic fluid. This impeding action allows an adequate pull to be applied on the line to achieve the required jarring intensity. When the piston passes from the cylinder bore into the larger by- pass bore, the fluid resistance is reduced, allowing the mandrel to accelerate upwards and strike the middle body insert which conveys the jarring force to the toolstring. The jar is closed and reset for repeat operation by slacking off toolstring weight, which telescopes the mandrel back into the tool. A spring loaded check valve (valve plug) opens to allow oil to flow through the piston easily as the mandrel moves downwards. A balance piston at the lower end of the middle body is free to move up and down to compensate for the internal volume changes and equalize internal and external pressures as the jar is operated. Cromar Hydraulic Jars are available in various diameters and are supplied with industry standard pin by box connections complete with fishing necks. O p e r a t i o n s Wireline Operations - Toolstring Wireline Jars - Spring Wireline Jars - Spring Product code: 372 Spring Wireline Jar Cromar Spring Wireline Jars are normally situated above a set of wireline link jars. They are designed to deliver a high upward impact load during heavy duty wireline operations. The spring wireline jar is a simple mechanical tool which actuates when the operator applies a steady pull to the wireline. The pulling action causes the spring to compress fully, allowing locking balls to release and free the inner mandrel which then accelerates upwards and strikes the top sub, creating an upward jarring force. Spring jars are just as effective as hydraulic jars. Because they are completely mechanical, spring jars do not suffer from the hydraulic jars inherent problem of gassing up and so they are practically maintenance free. When the wireline is not particularly elastic, or where jarring has to be carried out near to the surface, a Cromar accelerator (stretch simulator) should be used to provide the jar with the necessary energy. It is important to note that the force required to actuate the spring jar must be at least equal to the spring force. Therefore the line pull at surface must overcome the spring force plus the buoyant weight of the toolstring and wire, as well as frictional forces. When applying the required line pull, it is possible that the yield strength of the wireline may be exceeded. This situation must be considered beforehand in order to avoid breaking the wireline. For instance, in deep wells, the lightest spring should always be fitted. Cromar Spring Jars are available in various diameters and are supplied with industry standard pin by box connections complete with fishing necks. The effect of a given jarring action will depend on the speed of movement, stem weight, the jars stroke length, tubing size and deviation, fluid viscosity and well pressure. Tubular jars are used during fishing operations, when the jarring action of standard link type jars could be impeded by wire, debris or other foreign matter in the tubing. Tubular jars can also be used with toolstrings being deployed inside large tubing or casings, where conventional link jars tend to lock up and buckle at full stroke. O p e r a t i o n s Wireline Operations - Toolstring Shock Absorbers & Accelerators Shock Absorbers & Accelerators Product code: Shock Absorber-149 Accelerator- 148 Shock Absorber The Cromar Shock Absorber is designed to dampen impact shock loads that can occur during wireline deployment and so prevent damage to sensitive instrumentation being run on the toolstring. The shock absorber consists of a main body, top sub (fishing neck), bottom sub, inner mandrel and upper and lower absorber springs. The lower spring is heavier than the upper one, as it has to sustain the tool weight. The floating action of the mandrel against the springs dampens the shock loads. Cromar Shock Absorbers are available in various sizes, for H2S and standard service. They can be supplied in stainless steel on request. Accelerator Cromar Wireline Accelerators are designed to simulate line stretch when jarring at shallow depths with spring or hydraulic power jars. Positioned above the jars in the toolstring, the accelerator assists in maintaining a constant pull as the power jar opens. After the jar has fired the spring(s) in the accelerator absorbs the recoil action of the toolstring on the wire, releasing the energy stored within the spring(s). Cromar accelerators are available for all toolstring sizes, with industry standard pin by box connections complete with fishing necks. O p e r a t i o n s Wireline Operations - Utility Wireline Tools Tubing End Locators Tubing End Locators Product code: 137 Tubing End Locator The Cromar Tubing End Locator is designed to locate the end of the production tubing, allowing the total depth to be measured. A tubing end locator consists of a solid body with a milled pocket to accommodate the latch finger. The latch finger is spring loaded and retained by a latch pin. A shear pin is installed below the latch finger, which retains the finger at 90 degrees. During wireline operations, once the tubing end locator has exited the production tubing into the casing, the spring loaded latch finger falls down on to the shear pin. When retrieving the toolstring, the latch finger prevents entry into the production tubing. At this point the depth is recorded. After shearing the pin the latch finger falls back into the pocket and the toolstring is retrieved. Cromar Tubing End Locators are available to suit all tubing sizes. They are supplied with industry standard pin by box connections complete with fishing necks. A hydrostatic bailer is used when debris cannot be removed with a normal pump bailer assembly. The hydrostatic bailers upper section consists of a chamber sealed at surface atmospheric pressure, complete with a relief plug at the top and shear piston subassembly on the bottom. The piston is pinned to the bottom sub prior to deployment. The bailer is activated by jarring downward, which shears the pin on the piston. Well pressure then causes the piston to accelerate upward, creating a suction which draws the debris into the tool. The C-CST check set tool consists of a top sub complete with fishing neck and pin connection, and a housing with shear pin cover and inner core. The check set tool is deployed into the well and located in the lock mandrel. Downward jarring is then applied to establish that the lock mandrel has been set. Once the tool has been retrieved from the well, the sheared pin provides evidence that the lock mandrel was correctly set. When ordering, please specify lock mandrel size and type. C-RX Running Tool The Cromar C-RX Running Tool is designed to deploy and set sub-surface flow controls equipped with X and R lock mandrels. This tool is generally used for installing a wireline retrievable safety valve in the uppermost landing nipple. The C-RX running tool allows the lock mandrel to be deployed with its keys set either in the control position or in the selective position. When a lock mandrel is being deployed into a selective (non No-Go) landing nipple, the keys must be in the control position (keys out). This position enables the tool to be set in the first corresponding nipple. When a lock mandrel is being deployed into a No- Go landing nipple, the keys must be in the selective position (keys fully retracted). This position enables the tool to be set in the corresponding No-Go landing nipple. C-RX running tools are fitted with tell tale snap rings and can be fitted with an upper shear pin as required. The C-OM-1 kickover tool is used in conjunction with standard and special (for deviated wells) side pocket valve running and pulling tools. Once the tool has been located in position below the mandrel, an upward movement causes the locating finger to engage in the orientation slot, which turns the tool to correctly align it with the pocket. Continued upward movement then causes the arm to kick over into the mandrel pocket. The C-OM-1 kickover tool consists of a top sub complete with fishing neck and pin connection, an upper body with locator finger and kickover springs, a lower body with arm assembly with a box connection and an arm housing (tray), which protects equipment being deployed and retrieved from the side pocket mandrel. A knuckle joint should be run above this tool to assist with orientation. Spacer bars are required when retrieving valves from MMG side pocket mandrels. O p e r a t i o n s Wireline Operations - Fishing Tools Wire Grabs & Center Spears Wire Grabs & Center Spears Product code: Wire Grab-176 Centre Spear-177 Wire Grab The Cromar Wire Grab is designed to retrieve a broken wireline during fishing operations, after a split skirt wirefinder has been deployed to locate and ball the upper end of the wire in the well bore. The wire grab consists of a top sub complete with fishing neck and pin connection and a body with two or three bendable prongs. Each prong has several pointed barbs welded on the inner side to form hooks. The flexible design allows the operator to bend the grab prong ends to suit the tubing ID which helps to prevent the wire grab from bypassing the broken line. The wire grab is deployed into the well attached to a fishing toolstring by means of a dummy rope socket and pulling tool. When ordering, please specify Cromar product number and actual OD of tool required. Centre Spear The Cromar Centre Spear is designed as a last resort fishing tool, to retrieve broken wireline from the well. This tool is not recommended for general wireline fishing operations. The centre spear should only be used in cases where the wire is balled up so badly that it is impossible to get hold of it with a standard two-pronged grab. Once wire is wrapped around this tool, it cannot be released until it reaches the surface. O p e r a t i o n s Wireline Operations - Fishing Tools Wireline Retriever Wireline Retriever Product code: 263 Wireline Retriever The Cromar Wireline Retriever is designed to locate and retrieve cut or broken slickline or small diameter braided cables from the well bore, during fishing operations. The wireline retriever consists of a top sub complete with fishing neck and pin connection, mandrel, body, spear point, slip and split skirt. The retriever may be dressed with the appropriate sized split skirt to make it adaptable to various sizes of tubing. In operation, the wireline retriever is deployed into the well on a fishing toolstring. As it descends, well fluid and friction cause the skirt to ride up on the mandrel, exposing the spear point and the gap between the spear and the skirt. Tool contact with the broken line is indicated by a loss of running-in string weight. Stopping causes the skirt to move down the mandrel, wedging the caught line. The wireline is then pulled up, securely wedging the broken line into the tool. Wireline retriever bodies are available in 1 1/2 OD & 1 7/8 OD sizes. O p e r a t i o n s Wireline Operations - Fishing Tools Rotary Wireline Cutters Rotary Wireline Cutters Product code: Standard Cutter-156 Interface Cutter-155 Rotary Wireline Cutters The Cromar Rotary Wireline Cutter is designed to cut solid wirelines (0.092, 0.108 & 0.125 OD) or swabbing cables (3/16 & 7/32 OD) when the toolstring becomes stuck in the well. Standard Cutter The standard cutter is deployed into the well under its own weight, guided by the wireline or cable. When the cutter strikes the rope socket on the stuck toolstring, the shock is transmitted to the rotating knife, which cuts the wire. The rotating action of the knife pushes a tapered slip upwards, wedging and locking the wireline or cable onto the cutter. This locking action allows the cutter to be recovered to surface on the wireline. Interface Cutter The Cromar Interface Wireline Cutter should be used when there is a risk of the wireline or cable being cut prematurely. The cutter is deployed into the well under its own weight, guided by the wireline or cable and lands on the rope socket of the stuck toolstring. A flat bottom go-devil drop bar is then deployed to operate the cutter. The drop bar strikes the inner sleeve of the cutter, which drives downwards to rotate the knife, which in turn shears the wireline or cable. The rotating action of the knife pushes a tapered slip upwards, wedging and locking the wireline or cable onto the cutter. This locking action allows both the cutter and the drop bar to be recovered to surface on the wireline. After each operation, the cutter must be stripped down, thoroughly cleaned and inspected for wear or damage. Centralisers It is important to deploy cutters and drop bars with appropriately sized slip over centralisers fitted. This prevents the cutter or drop bar from wedging with the lost toolstring.
