Two 1.5 V alkaline batteries (LR44) or 1.55 V silver-oxide
batteries (5R44) are needed to provide power for the
camera's exposure meter.

Because the batteri es are used to power onl y the exposure
meter, the camera operates even i f they are exhausted or

<Battery Precauti ons>

batteri es and warm the camera before shooti ng. The bat-

To obtain correct exposure, it is important to set the
film speed correctly. The speed of the film you are us-
ing is printed on the film box.
To set the fi l m speed, l i ft up the Fi l m Speed Ri ng and turn
i t unti l the desi red ISO speed comes opposi te the i ndex

Focusing is done with a split-image focusing center,
microprism collar and a surrounding matte screen.

The aperture control s the amount of l i ght that reaches the
f i l m. l f t he Apert ure Ri ng i s t urned t o a one st ep hi gher
number (from 4 to 5.6, for exampl e), the amount of ex-
posure wi l l be reduced by hal f; i f i t i s turned to a one step
l ower number, the amount of exposure wi l l be doubl ed. The
aperture not onl y control s the amount of l i ght, but al l ows
you to take pi ctures by usi ng the l ens' depth-of{i el d effect
(see page 26). To set the aperture, turn the ri ng and set the
number you want (wi th cl i ck) opposi te the Aperture/Di s-
tance Index. Intermedi ate setti ngs can al so be used.

Your camera features a center-weighted metering sys-
tem which measures the light intensity with emphasis
on your subject in the center of the viewfinder. lt also
measures the brightness rn the surrounding area.
The camera operates on manual exposure. At fi rst, set the
fi l m speed. You can choose any appropri ate combi nati on of
shutter speed and aperture to obtai n correct exposure.
l f you press the Shutter Rel ease Button hal fway i n, the ex-
posure meter wi l l swi tch on and an LED wi l l turn on i n the
vi ewfi nder to i ndi cate exposure. The LED wi l l turn off as
soon as you take your fi nger off the button.
As the exposure meter i s based on a center-wei ghted
system, al ways pl ace your subj ect i n the center of the
vi ewfi nder for l i ght meteri ng.

<Exposure Met er Coupl i ng Range>
The fol l owi ng chart shows the coupl i ng range of the
camera' s bui l t-i n exposure meter. l t i l l ustrates the shutter
speeds that are usable at different ISO speeds.
Non-coupling range
lf you reach the end of the film, the Film Advance Lever
will no longer operate. Do not force it. Check the Expo-
sure Counter to make sure the end of the film is reach-
ed, wind the f ilm back into ifs cassetf e and unload the
casseffe. Send the exposed tilm tor processrng
as soon
as posslb/e.

lf there is a significant diflerence in brightness bet-
ween the main subject and its background, you will not
be able to get correct exposure in the normal metering
procedure. ln this case, exposure compensation is nec-
essary.

l f you are taki ng a backl i ghted subj ect or, i f a bri ght back-
ground occupi es a l arge area ol the pi cture frame (e.9. por-
trai ts wi th a bri ght sky or sea i n the background, subj ects
standi ng agai nst a wi ndow, etc.), your subj ect wi l l turn out
underexposed and dark. In such cases, gi ve twi ce or four
ti mes as much exposure so that i t i s correctl y exposed.

sec. to get correct exposure, make compensati on as fol -
l ows:
r Compensation with the Aperture Ring
For 2X exposure compensati on, l urn the ri ng from F16 to
F' l 1. and for 4X. to FB.
r Compensation with the Shutter Speed Dial
For 2X exposure compensati on, turn the di al from 1/250
sec. t o 1/ 125 sec. , and f or 4X, t o 1/ 60 sec.

l f a dark background occupi es a l arge area of the pi cture
frame (e.9. spotl i ghted subj ects on a stage), on the contrary,
your subj ect wi l l turn out overexposed and l i ght. In such
cases, reduce the amount of exposure to hal f or one-fourth
so that i t i s correctl v exoosed.
Exampl e:
l f the camera' s exoosure meter i ndi cates F4 and 1/60 sec.
to get correct exposure, make compensati on as fol l ows:
r Compensation with the Aperture Ring
For 1l 2X exposure compensati on, turn the ri ng from F4 to
F5.6. and tor 114X. to FB.
r Compensation with the Shutter Speed Dial
For 1l 2X exposure compensati on, turn the di al from 1/60
sec. t o
