On Friday, May 23, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin appointed Churchwell to ll the lake enthusiast repre- sentative position on the board, replacing outgo- ing board member Betty Kerns (Stillwater). He is lling an unexpired term ending August 29, 2015. Churchwell retired as president of Public Ser- vice Company of Okla- homa (PSO) in July 2004, after a career in the elec- tric utility and energy industry that spanned nearly 40 years. As he brings that experience to his new leadership role at GRDA, it will ben- et not only the orga- nization itself but all of its stakeholders across Oklahoma, said GRDA Chief Executive Ofcer/ Director of Investments Dan Sullivan. Mr. Churchwell brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our board, Sullivan said. His career in the elec- tric utility industry, as well as his knowledge of Grand Lake and ongo- ing lake issues make him a great choice that will make immediate, posi- tive contributions. Churchwell currently serves on the board of the directors of both the Grand Lake Water- shed Alliance and Har-Ber Vil- lage Museum, located on the shores of Grand Lake. He previ- ously served as a member of the I nt e r na t i ona l Society of the Energy Advocates; board mem- ber and chairman of the Council of Education and Workforce Develop- ment for the State Cham- ber of Oklahoma; and as a previous board mem- ber of Rural Enterprises of Oklahoma. He holds a bachelors degree in communications from the University of Tulsa and completed Harvard Business Schools ad- vanced management program. Thomas Churchwell has spent his entire ca- reer in energy manage- ment in both the public and private sector, said Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin in a press release announcing the appointment. He brings a unique leadership skill- set to the GRDA and will serve this agency well. GRDA is governed by a seven-member board of directors, com- prised of representa- tives from each GRDA customer class (munic- ipals, electric coopera- tives and industrials) as well as the GRDA lakes area. Two at-large rep- r e s e n t a t i v e s also sit on the board. Appoint- ments are made by the Okla- homa Governor (3), Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Repre- sentatives and President Pro Tem- pore of the Oklahoma State Senate. Two other board positions are ex-officio, filled by the general manager of the OAEC and the executive director of the Municipal Electric Systems of Oklahoma (MESO) or by their designees. Headquartered in Vin- ita, GRDA is Oklaho- mas state-owned elec- tric utility; fully funded by revenues from elec- tric and water sales in- stead of taxes. Directly or indirectly, GRDAs low-cost, reliable elec- tricity touches 75 of 77 counties in the state. At no cost to taxpay- ers, GRDA also man- ages 70,000 surface acres of lakes in the state, including Grand Lake, Lake Hudson and the W.R. Holway Reser- voir. Today, GRDAs 500 employees continue to produce the same power for progress that has benefited the state for 75 years.
