Executive Summary:

This report has been prepared under the subject research methodology and design, for the
fulfillment of the requirement for the MBA degree. This research is a problem finding research.
This research is conducted to find out the effect of load shedding on students assignment. The
research is based on questionnaire distributed to people belonging to Ace Institute of
Management. The study period taken for the research is 3 months. The report is based on the
sample of 30 respondents.

This survey will be useful for the students as they will be able to express their satisfaction
/dissatisfaction. This survey will be beneficial for the college as well, as it will be able to
improve its students satisfaction and thus create good reputation in the market. From the
research I came to know that there has not been any significant effect of load shedding on the
students of Ace. There are several other factors apart from load shedding that has been affecting
the timely submission of assignments of the students at Ace such as the time given for
assignment submission and the choice between electronic assignments and hand written
assignments..

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY

1.1 Background of the report
This project was assigned by the Pokhara University as a partial fulfillment of the requirement
for the degree of Master of Business Administration under the subject Business Research
Methodology. The research topic carried out is Effects of Load shedding on students
assignment. The reason behind choosing this research topic is because load shedding is the most
recurrent problem in Nepal at the present. Therefore, I wanted to find out to what extent load
shedding has been affecting the students, specially their submission of assignments. For that, I

12

have conducted the research through structured questionnaire with people inside Ace Institute of
Management.

1.2 Rational
This survey will be beneficial for the college, since by this survey they will know to what extent
the students at ace are being affected by the problem of load shedding. They will get an
understanding as to how students are facing the problem of timely submission of assignment due
to load shedding. The college will be able to see where the college is doing good, and also to
determine where the college is lacking and needs improvement. By focusing more on the factors
that needs to be improved. This will further help the management to attract more qualitative
students in the future.
This survey will be useful for the students as well, as they will be able to express their
satisfaction /dissatisfaction to the management as well as suggest ways for dealing with the
problem in hand. This will be presented to Management of the college. Hence they can expect
improvement for the days to come and a solution for the problem.

1.3 Objective of the study

For the partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MBA

To find out the extent to which load shedding has been affecting the students and their
submission of assignments on time.

To find out the probable solutions to the existing problem

13

1.4 Limitations

The sample population is very large but sample size taken is small.

As the questionnaire consisted of very few Yes/No questions, not much of analysis part
consists of tables, bars, and charts.

1.5 Methodology
The questionnaire will be given to students of ace morning MBA personally by the investigator.
The sample of 30 students will be chosen through simple random sampling design, where each of
30 individuals will have equal chance of being selected for the study. This will insure accuracy
and precision of result.
The questionnaire will be personally explained by the investigator to the sample on any topic
they do not understand, so that no communication gap will be created. This would thus avoid
misleading conclusion due to communication gap while collecting the information

1.6 Literature review

The report is on the effects of Load Shedding on students assignment at Ace institute of
Management and basically being a primary research, not much secondary data will be collected.
However few articles collected from internet on the related topics consists of:

www.nea.com.np
From this secondary data I was able to find out the capability of Nepal Electricity
Authority for providing electricity to the citizens of Kathmandu Valley. The extent to
which load shedding was going to increase.

14

The article published in The Himalayan Times- It mentioned that load shedding was one
of the most serious problems for the Nepalese people. Students being one of the biggest
victims of it. It said that load shedding was having a negative impact on the students
education standard. A mass of students had been directly or indirectly affected by load
shedding especially their grades and quality of work.

www.google.com

From this site I found out the meaning to some important terms and incidents related to
the research topic and gave me an idea about the current scenario.

CHAPTER 2: INTRODUCTION OF THE TOPICS

2.1 Load shedding
Load shedding means the cutting off the electric current on certain lines when the demand
becomes greater than the supply. It is the process by which an electricity utility cuts power to
some customers in response to a shortage of availability electricity.
15

2.2 The Current Scenario

The unending suffering of the masses is now taking its toll on the most vulnerable segment of
society, its students. Students from all over the city consider themselves the worst affected by
load shedding, as frequent power outages have brought exam preparations to a near standstill.
Many say they feel like they are living in the Stone Age, and have effectively no time to study at
home. Many students, particularly those who reside in hostels, are appearing for their
supplementary examinations nowadays and complaining about the frequent power outages.
The city is facing about 12 hours of load shedding everyday. One of the MBA students at ACE
complained that examiners and teachers do not understand their predicament, as they consider
load shedding to be no excuse. "With so much load shedding, it is hard for me or any other
student to study at night, which is the only time we have for college work. If this continues, I will
not be able to get good grades." "We suffer a lot as we have to write assignments and use the
Internet very frequently. Due to the trimester system observed in our university, it becomes very
difficult to maintain grades."

2.3 Background of the organization of study.

CHAPTER 4: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

4.1 Research Design
The research design adopted in this study is first descriptive, trying to find out the extent of the
effect of load shedding on students assignment and also look s to find out the potential solutions
to the problem. It is based on questionnaire distributed to students studying in Ace Institute of
Management, morning shift. The samples were chosen using simple random sampling design,
ensuring accuracy and precision of result. This research is trying to see the extent to which load
shedding is affecting the students timely submission of assignments.

4.2 Study place

The study was conducted in the premise of Ace institute of Management.

4.3 Study population

The study population covers all the students of Ace Institute of Management studying in
Morning Shift MBA. It constitutes of all students of MBA second, third and fourth trimester of
morning MBA.

4.4 Study period

The study period taken for this research is 3 months.

22

4.5 Sample size

The study sample taken for this research is 30 respondents all students of Ace Institute of
Management. The samples were chosen using simple random sampling design, where each of 30
individuals had equal chance of being selected. This has insured accuracy and precision of result.

4.6 Data collection

This survey is totally based on the primary data collected through questionnaires distributed to
the sample. However some secondary information about the organization was collected through
website, newspaper and magazines.

4.7 Data Analysis

Once the data was collected, the information were coded and got fitted on the SPSS program to
determine how satisfied the students at Ace Institute of Management are and to find out the
factors that students would consider most important for their satisfaction. By using various tools
of SPSS (One sample t test, frequency tests etc) the calculated values, tables, graphs were
derived. On the basis of these analyses has been drawn.

23

CHAPTER 5: FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS

This analysis is based on the report Effect of load shedding on students assignment. For this
30 respondents were asked to fill questionnaire, and on the basis of the response of the
respondents, analysis has been made.

they have handwriting problems and more thing is that they have easy access of electricity at
college.

Interpretation
Most of the respondents said that popularity of the load shedding is not decreasing. About half of
the respondents are indifferent to this question. So according the data we received we can see
that its popularity is seem to be decreasing. But this is not the case of ace. Respondents have
given this perception about decreasing popularity of electronic assignments because of load
shedding in Kathmandu. They think that all of the colleges cannot provide electric service at
their colleges.

I found amazing results in this question. Despite of having load shedding problems 86.6% of the
respondents do their assignment in the evening and at night while only few do at the afternoon
time. Students just need 2-3 hours to complete the assignment and they do it in the college. From
this we can conclude that load shedding do not have serious affect on students of ace. This might
not be the case for other college students.

A) H0=students do not prefer handwritten assignments.

H1= students prefer handwritten assignments.

Level of significance =5%

Cal T = -5.460
Tab T= -1.699
Since Cal t < Tab t we accept null hypothesis. Therefore students do not like handwritten
assignments in this load shedding problem too. This is because there is electricity back up at
35

college and most students do not like handwritten assignments because it does not look
professional and they have handwriting problems.
B) H0=students do not missed the submission deadline.
H1=students missed the submission deadline.

Level of significance =5%

Cal T = .750
Tab T= 1.699
Since Cal t < Tab t we accept null hypothesis. Therefore there is no significant relationship
between the submission deadline and load shedding. Students do not have missed the submission
deadline. From this also we can conclude that load shedding do not have affected timely
submission of assignments.
C) H0= students do not prefer electronic assignments.
H1= students prefer electronic assignments.
Level of significance =5%
Cal T = 4.176
Tab T= -1.699
Here calculated T is greater than table T. we reject null hypothesis that is students like electronic
assignments. So, we can conclude that load shedding is not reducing the popularity of electronic
assignments in ace.

Findings from open ended questions

36

The other factors that have been found from the questionnaire are:

It is found that majority of the students believe that the submission deadline of
assignments must be increased.

Students would be greatly aided if the college computer lab would be open till late hours.

It would be better if teachers would provide students with the alternative of submitting
either hand written assignment or electronic assignment.

37

CHAPTER 6: DISCUSSION
We can see form our research that there are several factors that affect the timely submission of
assignments than just the eminent problem of load shedding. The research has brought forward
us several facts that seemed to be rather unusual before. Load shedding definitely has a profound
impact on students and their quality of work but the strange thing that has been found by the
research is that at Ace Institute of Management students and their timely submission of
assignment have been affected more by factors such as short submission deadline of
assignments, early closing of the college computer lab, lack of alternative between choice of
doing assignment electronically and in a hand written format. The students were asked several
questions so as to find out the factors affecting their submission of assignments such as when did
they mostly do their assignment, how much time did they devote for their assignment, whether
hand written assignment was an alternative to electronic assignment, whether they were given
sufficient time to complete their assignment, etc. From their answers it was evident that students
at Ace somehow managed to cope up with the problem of load shedding some way or the other
but had faced several other valid problems that were affecting their submission of assignment on
time along with the quality of their work.

38

CHAPTER 7: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

7.1 Conclusion
From the finding and interpretations we can conclude that students at Ace Institute of
Management rather than being effected more by load shedding happening in Nepal were more
troubled by factors such as short submission deadline of assignments, early closing of the college
computer lab, lack of alternative between choice of doing assignment electronically and in a
hand written format.
This doesnt overpower the fact that load shedding has a tremendous impact on students in either
some direct or indirect way. The quality of work of the students is greatly affected as they have
to work under enforced constraints such as load shedding. The inability to work at the time of
their convenience itself is a huge drawback than it seems. Due to of access of electricity at ace,
students still prefer electronic assignment but have said that it would be a lot better if they were
also given the option of submitting hand written assignment instead of just electronic
assignments.

Others factors behind missing of assignments seemed to be sickness and house related problems.
From the research it is known that students are not given more assignment. During interview
with some of the faculties, they said that due to the excess pressure of trimester system; they give
few assignments to the students. From the research we can conclude that students at Ace have
found ways to tackle the problem of load shedding but are faced with critical issues that are more
in control of the college.

7.2 Recommendation
Even though there does not seem to be much impact of load shedding on the assignment of the
students there are several other factors and issues that are actually having an impact on the
students and their ability to submit their assignments on time. Some of these issues are
fortunately in control of the management of the college. Students satisfaction is important for
the college too as they have to develop good market value and in order maintain long term
relationship with the students to have good network. They can take several steps to ensure that
they are moving in the right path. Therefore, some of the things that the college can do in order
to increase students satisfaction are:

Students should be given the freedom to choose the method of doing their assignment i.e.
between electronic assignment and handwritten assignment.

Submission deadline of assignments should be increased depending upon the situation or

the scenario.

The computer laboratory at the college premises should be opened till late so as to
facilitate those students who dont have any backup at their home.

The generator backup at the college could be made more consistent and reliable so that
the students can rely on it.
