ADULT
COURSE
GUIDE
2014
< SAMANTHA DEVERDICS
I was working as a receptionist when
I decided to pursue a career change
and follow my passion for art and design.
I came to an open evening and with advice
from tutors enrolled onto the Level 2
Extended Certicate in Art and Design.
I was really apprehensive about stepping
back into education after such a long time
but the tutors put me at ease and were
very encouraging. I loved the course and
stayed on to do my Level 3 and now Ive
progressed onto the Foundation Degree
in Textiles and Surface Design which
will include a placement in year two,
allowing me to gain some valuable
industry experience.

WELCOME
TO NEWCASTLE
COLLEGE
Start something amazing with Newcastle College, let us show you how
a part-time course can work for you. Whether youre looking to get back
into work, aiming for a promotion, or even thinking of a new hobby.
I already had a background in ne art but
struggled to nd a job, so I started thinking
about painting and decorating as there
seemed to be a lot more job opportunities
available in this sector. I enrolled on the
Level 1 Painting and Decorating (P&D)
course at the college, really enjoyed it,
so I did the Level 2 and progressed onto
the Level 3. The tutors were fantastic
and they really spurred me on.
I am now working as an acting lecturer
and learning support instructor in P&D,
which is the start of a new career for me.
I have to thank the staff at Newcastle
College for that theyve helped me
get to where I am today.

Course fees
Course fees in this guide have been broken down into two
categories; the standard fee which is for those aged 19-23 years
and the 24+ fee for those aged 24 and over. This has been done
so we can highlight to those aged 24+ those courses where you
are able to apply for the new Advanced Learning Loan.
The loan scheme has been introduced by the government to help
learners cover the costs of these tuition fees, this is called the 24+
Advanced Learning Loan, please see page 5 for full details.

to help learners cover the cost of course fees. The 24+
Advanced Learning Loan is easy to apply for, doesnt take
your household income into account and doesnt involve

You wont have to pay anything back until your income is over
21,000 a year and it is also a great way to access courses
that previously, for nancial reasons, may have been out
of your reach.
How do I apply?
You can apply now for a loan for courses starting on or
after 1 August 2013. Visit gov.uk/advancedlearningloans
to apply online or download an application form.
How much can I get?
The amount you will get depends on the type of course you
take how much the fees are for the course. The minimum
loan you can receive is 300.

Who is eligible?
Individuals who are:
aged 24 or over at the start of your course
resident in the UK
have not previously had a loan to do the same
qualication type and level of qualication
studying at Newcastle College.
How is the loan repayed?
If your course nishes before 2016 repayments wont start
until April 2016. You also wont have to pay anything back
until your income is over 21,000 a year and if your income
drops below this amount your repayment will stop. Go onto
study a higher education programme and you wont have
to repay your loan!
If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme
and you subsequently go on to successfully complete a
higher education course you wont have to pay back
your Advanced Learning Loan.

I was working as part of the editorial
and administrative team at a local
magazine when I started to consider
a career change and thought about
teaching. I did some research and
realised the colleges Foundation
Degree would allow me to get
into a teaching career quicker
than I initially rst thought.
When I nished my degree I was offered
a full-time position as an English teacher
in a local school and I am now in a job I
love, and couldnt be happier with the way
things have worked out for me. Without the
help and support from Newcastle College
I wouldnt be in the position I am in now.

Ive always been in full-time employment

up until 20 months ago when I was made
redundant from my job as a delivery driver.
This gave me the chance to rethink what
I wanted to do with my life and I liked
the idea of working in a more worthwhile
and caring profession.
I found out about the Employability courses
at the college and I enrolled on the Level
1 Mental Health Awareness course, really
enjoyed it and decided to progress onto
the Level 2 course. My aim is to become
a support worker working with disabled
children and this course has been essential
for me to get the career I want.
