Mountains tower high above the frozen wasteland. Pine trees speckle the massif, staining the bases with a dark green. Twigs and pine needles cover the dark brown forest, ll- ing the air with the sweet smell of pine. Wolves howl through the frosty night, ter- rifying their helpless prey as they chase it down. The moon is hovering in the sky, il- luminating the mountains and the cold snow as the soft powder falls to the dark earth. A challenge that Sultainia faces was farming was not easy in the regions where [Sultanians] lived, the hard cold mountains are too rocky, which prevents farming. (Frey 268) The coarse fur of a goat rubs against the grey granite as it de- partures to locate a meal to eat as the sneaky wolves track down its herd. The frigid air among the towering mountains makes for a beautiful place to live. It is in this favorable/unfavorable geo- graphic environment that the civilization of Sultania will be founded. It is a civiliza- tion whose design takes its inspiration 2 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f from the study of past civilizations such as the Arabs, the Aztecs, the Greeks, the Mayans, the Mesopotamians, and the Ro- mans, among others. This book will docu- ment the necessary steps to take in order to create a successful civilization. 3 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them. - Albert Einstein SECTION II 4 Analysis of the Problem Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f The rst step in building a successful civi- lization is to secure basic human needs such as food and water. Due to its geogra- phy, the major challenges the civilization of Sultania faces in achieving a basic food and water supply include the following: Because Sultania is located in the moun- tains, there is little land to use for an em- pire or civilization. There is a very small water supply because snow and ice cover rivers. Because the snow covers the land, it would be nearly impossible to farm. One of the only ways to farm would be to raise cattle but would be risky because the cattle wouldnt be able to survive the harsh environment and slowly they would die off. Another challenge is that there would be several predators in the environment. The predators may try to attack the civiliza- tions for food and other recourses. Also it would be uncomfortable living there be- cause of the high altitude and the dry, cold climate. If a civilization or empire failed to resolve these issues, their empire 5 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f or civilization would fade and so would the people. 6 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f When the solution is simple, God is answering. -Albert Einstein SECTION III 7 Proposed Solutions Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f In order for a civilization to prosper, it must be able to modify the geographic area around it in order to meet the basic needs of supplying its inhabitants with food and water. Instead of growing crops, they need to raise sheep and goats. This would be simi- lar to what the Greeks did which was, they raised sheep and goats, which can graze on sides of mountains. Goats pro- vided milk while sheep provided wool to make clothes and blankets. If there was a large population of deer and bear, they could hunt for them and use their skin for blankets and their meat for food. Because the ground is full of snow, they can put piles of snow in a pot and put on a re to melt the snow into water in the winter; but in the summer, use aqueducts do get water. Because there is few land to live on and lots of avalanches, people would live in tree houses for more land. 8 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f The happiness of society is the end of government -John Adams CHAPTER 4 9 Law and Government Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f Lessons on Democracy In History, as we learn about Govern- ment, there has been constant failure as governments were adopted and aban- doned, each time struggling to provide for their citizens but being defeated by im- perfections and greed. Over the course of hundreds of years, many governments have been aban- doned, and still are being overthrown to in present time. Just recently, Egypt has - nally overthrown their tyrant who has been abusing his power for the past year and has now installed a new form of gov- ernment. Monarchies, Oligarchies, Tyrannies, and more all collapsed when they failed to provide what was required to posses a successful civilization. In Athens, they had used a form of government called Di- rect Democracy, where people would vote for themselves. But alas, as seen in the failed Athenian government, it be- comes an impossible battle to try to let everyone input upon decisions.Direct de- mocracy is not a good way to run a 10 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f county, let alone a city. If that were at- tempted in America, it would be a govern- ment collapse. TheAthenian Assemblyquickly became tired of voting so often. Sparta tried something different: They had 30 men in power, who drew up laws, ran the day-to-day processes, and overall called the shots, which was theCouncil of Elders. TheSpartan Assemblycon- sisted of all citizens, who shouted to cast their votes. But this was just an illusion of power, as they didnt make decisions. If the Elders didnt agree with the people, they would go ahead and do what they wanted anyways. The way the Spartans worked was largely successful; due to the 11 Hanging Gardens of Sultania Gallery 4.1 Minecraft Ancient Architecture Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f fact that no one person held too much power, besides the kings. 12 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f CHAPTER 5 13 Code of Laws Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will nd a way around the laws. -Plato Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f 1) If people steal, half of their belongings will be conscated and they will go to jail for 3 months. 2) If you kill someone and you have a son or a daughter, they will be killed and you will go to jail. 3) If someone does grafti, the owner of the property will be allowed to grafti on the other persons property 4) If insults a police ofcer, they would be arrested. 5) Murder would be legal if it is during a time of war and the person who was mur- dered was a very bad person. 6) Minimum wage is $15 an hour 7) You must attend school for at least 15 years 8) The counterfeit money is illegal 9) You can not kill your self inside the city 14 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f 10) Male citizens have to serve in the mili- tary for at least 3 years. 11) You must have a warrant to hunt and if you dont, you will be ned 300 Sulta- nian dollars. 12) If you are caught selling drugs, you will be jailed for 4 years. 13) There must be a background check to get a gun. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership. -Nelson Mandela Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f Lessons on Political Leadership from Ju- lius Caesar Julius Caesar, one of the worlds most well known ruler, had accomplished thousands of accomplishments, but 30% of Rome hated him. He had attempted to give wealth and prosperity to the citizens of Rome but his senators killed him be- fore he gave money and prosperity to the citizens. He had angered the citizens in his class, which is a huge change from other rulers loosing power. Julius only helped the lower class instead of both of the classes. Lessons on Political Leadership from Augustus Caesar Augustus Caesar is an amazing role model for leaders. He aided people in need, protected himself from evil, made everyone in Rome happy, and was pre- sumed as a god at the end his life. So, naturally, I crave my civilization to be like his. Sure, he made many mistakes, such as forcing people to marry and have chil- dren to gain economical benets, but over- all he improved the Roman Citizens qual- ity of life. I would want my leader to reno- vate and build public infrastructure. Building public structures is important to civilizations, for example, it is stated in the text, Augustus began a program to 17 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f make Rome safer and more beautiful. This program included restoring 82 tem- ples and building new statues, theaters, and a large outdoor arena, or forum (Frey). If I ruled in the Roman Era, this would be an important part of my reign. I think that my civilization would be well ruled if my leader took ideas from the rule of Augustus Caesar. 18 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f CHAPTER 7 19 Decline of Western Rome If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the abil- ity of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace. -Franklin D. Roosevelt Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f The civilization of Sultania can learn lots of things from the Western Rome Civiliza- tion. To avoid Sultania from crumbling, it needs to be constantly reconstructed, and would need an educated, democratic soci- ety. This will ensure that everyone has a say in the government, and people would be educated enough to want to work and succeed throughout their life in Sultania. First I would ban ghts, because they are barbaric and too violent for people to par- ticipate in. To ensure that my army is strong, I will make sure that only the strongest, toughest and smartest people that apply will be able to join. I will tax my citizens as much as they can afford, so they are not going to become bankrupt. I will have two police stations and a re sta- tion and a hospital to ensure the safety of my citizens. According to the book, Augustus Caesar Built police stations to protect his citizens from criminals. These are some of the factors which will contrib- ute to the ourishing nation of Sultania 20 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f One life is all we have and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrice what you are and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying. -Joan of Arc CHAPTER 8 21 Systems of Belief Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f Civilizations need a religion to stay to- gether. Religion is the reason most civiliza- tions rose and became an empire. They teach people right from wrong and give consequences to those who preform hor- rid actions and promote good actions. Greece, China, Rome, and almost all of Asia all had a religion, and look where it got them. Rome was declared the mighti- est empire ever, and China reigned for centuries. Religion helped get civiliza- tions as close to the gods as possible. Re- ligion inspired kings and emperors to make monuments, Pyramids, and relig- ious centers. All successful civilizations need a religion to protect them. Religion saves lives, solves problems, and answer questions. If Roger Smith were a Confucianist, he would have to save the boy because it is morally right. The goal of a Confucian- ist is to make a peaceful world full of love and acceptance. So, Roger Smith would have to save the boy, so he can make the world more peaceful helping people throughout his life. According to the book, Confucianists only wanted a world of peace and relationships. Not war and hatred (Frey 208). If Roger smith saves the boy, he would have a potential rela- tionship and he would have saved a life, which would make the world more peace- ful. He would be achieving the two parts of Confucianism, which would make him a devoted Confucianist. Also if he doesnt save the boy, he would have to live the 22 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f rest of his life with guilt. Roger Smith, as a devoted Confucianism would save the boy to come closer to world peace and maybe have a relationship with the boy. If Roger Smith were a Buddhist, he would have to save the boy, because the last thing a Buddhist wants to see is suf- fering. In order for Roger to reach enlight- enment, he must save the boy. According to the book, the Eightfold Path is a fa- mous Buddhist philosophical idea, which is also known as the Right Effort (frey 159). The right effort means that people must promote good actions, but expel evil actions. So, if Roger Smith doesnt save the boy, then he would be promoting evil actions and expel good actions, which will be a negative and prevent him from reaching enlightenment and make him a non-devoted Buddhist. His job as a Buddhist would be to save the boy and ex- 23 This is a peaceful area for my citizens to calm themselves and meditate. Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f pel evil, so he stays a devoted Buddhist and is not a disgrace to the mighty Bud- dhist himself. If Roger Smith were a Hindu, his moral obligation as a one would be to save the boy. If he does not save the boy, he will not be obeying dharma, so his karma will not be good. If he doesnt save the boy, he could be reincarnated as some- thing bad such as a bee or a y. This is why he must save the boy. If he saves the boy, than his dharma will improve, so his karma will be better. According to the book, Dharma is the persons moral obli- gation, and karma is the reward/ punishment for reincarnation (Frey 148). This is why he must save the boy to im- prove his karma. If his karma is good, then he could be reincarnated into some- thing good such as a president or a suc- cessful businessman. Now you know why religion is re- quired for the world. Religion is a large portion of peoples lives and protects them from killing, stealing, and lying. With a belief system that people can fol- low, they will be knowledgeable on what the right moral thing to do. They can con- nect with others like them. It brings hu- mans together. The positivity that comes with religion is a great factor to bring cheer peoples lives. This is why religion is important to people. 24 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f In an effort to create a successful civili- zation, the people of Sultania have estab- lished their own belief systems. It shares similar religious beliefs and teachings with other world religions and helps the people of Sultania live with strong moral values. Here are some examples. The word Natlus means to do what is right. The people of Sultania believe that if you do what is right, you will be re- warded with a good afterlife. If a citizen does not do what should be done, they will be punished. He will be eternally punished, and will never see daylight again. This could help my civilization thrive, because it compels my citizens to do the right action. According to the his- tory book, it stated that in Hinduism, peo- ple had to follow right action (frey 233). This civilization thrived for hundreds of years. This illustrates that it was an effec- tive part of their beliefs. Also many other religions have right action. In Islam there is zakat, which is where the wealthy must donate 2.5%of their earnings to charity. In my opinion, I think this is very important and it shows right action in many ways. Right action is one of the most important rules in beliefs, and it has helped civiliza- tions thrive. The second moral value Konod, means to treat your peers as if they were you. This benets the Sultanian society be- 25 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f cause it enables almost everyone to get along, and abolishes violence. Because al- most every civilization has collapsed be- cause of conict, Sultanias Moral value, Konod, abolishes violence to make sure that it thrives for hundreds of years and never disappears. Jesus Christ once said respect your neighbor as if they art thou self. Christianity is one of the most well known religions, and has been around for hundreds of years. This shows that this moral is very important to Sultania, be- cause it will ensure that Sultania will be around for a very long time. This is one of the best moral values, because there will be less hate, less jealousy and less disgust. third moral value, Canderous is simi- lar to Salat. Instead of praying 5 times a day, Citizens of Sultania only pray once a day. This will ensure that my citizens are dedicated to their religion, but do not let religion change the way they live their life. Praying is a way of showing loyalty to God, which will benet my citizens be- cause it would be a way for them to clear their minds. Also, prayers often teach chil- dren and adults moral values. For exam- ple: in Church, Christians often are taught to love one another and be the best per- son possible. This illustrates that that this moral from Christianity helped civiliza- tions thrive for hundreds of years.
26 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f Sultanias Sacred Space In Sultania, this is a religious structure named Ashloobo, used for worshiping God. This building was build to represent Natlus, the moral value for the golden rule. The people of Sultania believe that praying is a way out. It is a way for them to relax, also it teaches them values to use in their lives. Ashloobo is a disk shaped room, with a throne atop everything. This shows that everyone is worth the same, but the king is above all. According to the book, each civilization had a shrine or a temple (frey 239). These are some of my religious buildings. The Middle Ages Rise of Feudalism and the Church The fall of Rome and the threat of being destroyed once again by the barbarians led to the rise of Feudalism, and the Catholic Church. After the Visigoths at- tacked Rome, they had no main govern- ment or warriors, to protect themselves from the barbarians. King Charlemagne had united himself with the Church. Char- lemagne united himself with god and the Church, which ended the mayhem and destruction the Visigoths had caused his domain, and had given him more power. According to the book, Charlemagne was the rst holy emperor. This shows that he had helped Rome and Europe gain back 27 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f power. He helped the Church gain power and Europe recover. Charlemagne was the savior of the Catholic Church, and Rome, who helped save thousands of peo- ple. Decline of Feudalism In my opinion, the Bubonic plaque had the greatest impact on Europe because of all the people it killed, and how much it damaged it caused Europe. No one new about the ees and how they were biting the rats, then biting the kings subjects, which caused the plaque and killed. Also, it caused putrid odor and bleeding skin. It had wiped out the majority of the Euro- pean population and was the death of feu- dalism but the birth of the renaissance. Another reason Feudalism fell was be- cause the king gave rights to peasants and surfs, and agreed to pay them if they had joined his army. This resulted in a ter- rible way for the nobles, because they had no one to farm and clean on their manor. Also The Magna Carta, signed by King John made it so all the power that the king had could be stripped away. But there were many good things, which hap- pened towards the end of Feudalism. Be- cause of the exodus of peasants joining the army, the King of France appointed a girl named Joan of Arc, the warrior of god to lead all the peasants into battle. Sadly, the church thought she was a witch, so they burned her to the steak. Peasant sol- diers had created a new weapon called 28 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f the long bow, which was more accurate and could shoot farther than an ordinary bow. The fall of Feudalism was great for many reasons. But the main one was be- cause it gave peasants and surfs rights. From Feudalism to Humanism In my opinion, the Black Death led to the renaissance. After the plaque hit Europe it led practically all the survivors to think that god let them down and that the church was just using them. People were enraged because of this. All their lives they were believing in God, striving to be the best Christian possible, then believing God had punished them with the plaque. This is what damaged Europe so much and led to the end of Feudalism and the birth or the renaissance. The birth of the renaissance gave Surfs rights, and an op- portunity to become successful, so they quit their jobs and began to learn sci- ences. People forgot about the church and began moving forward. They began learn- ing more about sciences and math, which has beneted our world. 29 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance. -Confucius CHAPTER 9 30 Power of Ideas Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f In the middle ages, they focused on the church, and how they could impress god to go to Heaven. However during the ren- aissance, the humanist mind set was fo- cused on advancing in every single sub- ject, but be less interested in church. Peo- ple began to experiment with shadows and depth in art, learning how the human body works etc. People wanted to learn in this era. They wanted to revisit ancient theories and either validate them or dis- prove them. The Renaissance is one of the most important times ever because it was the evolution of art. Art in the middle ages was at and unrealistic, however during the renaissance the art changed. It began to have more depth, better shad- ows, more realistic and better colors. Stat- ues began to look more realistic and were life sized rather than giant or miniature. They played with indents and ne de- tails, which helped make the stature look incredibly more realistic. All of these con- tribute to the fact that the renaissance is possibly the most revolutionary era of all time. Humanism in Sultania is extremely im- portant and is the era Sultania began to discover new things. People were inter- ested in sciences and math, However there are some people who destroy the Sultanian buildings. Instead of torturing them, we simply made them rebuild the house, so they would learn how to build a house and could have a future as a car- 31 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f penter. With a humanist mindset in Sulta- nia, people became less violent and more focused on bettering themselves. In con- trast, People were focused on the church in the middle ages. According to frey, Peo- ple began to break away and question the church, Which took away lots of its power. There were many questionable teach- ings and practices of the Catholic Church that caused people to think the church was corrupt. The churched sold indul- gence, which is where the church would forgive anyone who bought these cards. If someone had one of these cards and the kill someone, that someone would give his card to the church and he would still go to heaven. Another reason people thought the church was corrupt because they would sell simony, which is where the church sold ofces to people. Also anyone who opposed the church was burned alive in public. The ideas and questions of reformers such as Martin Luther differed from the traditional beliefs of the Catholic Church and threatened its power. Heresy was the act of speaking out against the church, and claiming that the beliefs and prac- tices that individuals were forced to do, were in fact corrupt or not Christian at all. John Wycliffe was an English scholar who changed the words of the bible from 32 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f Latin to English. Because the church as ly- ing to everyone, it was a big threat for people to know what content the bible possessed. He was burned alive because of his crime; he was burned to the stake. People were so frustrated with the church that they were willing to be burned just like John. Martin Luther was a huge threat to the catholic church. Yet he was so popular and powerful that they were afraid to kill him or burn him to the stake. The reason that Martin Luther became disillusioned with the church was that the pope leo x needed money to nish building St. Pe- ters Cathedral. The pope sent bishops far and wide to sell indulgences to anyone who had enough money to buy them. Lu- ther was incensed and he tacked his ninety-ve theses against the catholic church, to the door in Witten, Germany. Leonardo Da Vinci is probably the most important person to incorporate into Sultania based on his contributions. A quote from him is Simplicity is the ulti- mate sophistication. Da Vinci helped It- aly ourish with his New/Hip ideas. He had created the blueprint for the ying machine and painted the Mona Lisa. He could help modernize Sultania and in- form people about sciences to boost their intellect. Also, Da Vinci invented the Ma- chine gun, which could help win wars 33 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f and battles. This Person could help bene- t my society because of all the contribu- tions he had made to Art, Math, and Sci- ence. He had created the blueprints for the ying machine, which was highly benecial. It could be used for warfare and nding new land to expand Sultania. However the main reason I want to have him in my civilization is because of how he inspired others to be as great as him. If others wanted to be as good as him, then mankind would have had discovered elec- tricity many years before Tomas Edison did. 34 Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f CHAPTER 10 35 Bibliography & Images Hashmi, Sultan Tuesday, June 3, 2014 10:07:12 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:a7:53:8f Bibliography Frey, Wendy.
