"'Then you just pretend you're half--? I beg your pardon, sir,' I caught myself. 'l didn't mean to
be---'
Mr. Raymond chuckled, not at all offended, and ltried to frame a discreet question: 'Why do
you do like you do?'
'Why--- oh yes, you mean why do I pretend? Well, it's very simple,' he said. 'Some folks don't ---
like the way I live. Now I could say the hell with 'em, I don't care if they don't like it. I do say I
don't care if they don't like it, right enough--- but I don't say the hell with 'em, see?"'
(200-20L)
ln To Kill a Mockingbird, Mr. Raymond's actions and lifestyle causes Maycomb's residents to
believe that he is evil and wrong in his ways, and that he only acts so because he seems to be
constantly sipping alcohol out of a brown paper bag. However, when Dill and Scout actually
converse with Mr. Raymond, they find out about the real Mr. Raymond and his beliefs. After
reading his explanation for his actions, the reader discovers that his appearance was
just
a
mask concealing his compassionate
personality.

To Kill a Mockinqbird: Mayella Ewell
"One corner of the yard, though, bewildered Maycomb. Against the fence, in a line, were six
chipped-enamel slop
jars
holding brilliant red geraniums, cared for as tenderly as if they
belonged to Miss Maudie Atkinson, had Miss Maudie deigned to permit a geranium on her
premises. People said they were Mayella Ewell's." (L70-L7Ll
Due to the fact that Mayella is part of the Ewell family, Maycomb assumes that she is part of
the whole Ewell stereotype. On the other hand, by taking care of the geraniums, Mayella
proves that she's responsible and considerate, and that she's trying to be a better
person. This
demonstrates how appearances are deceiving because Mayella looks
just
like the other Ewells
in her family, and lives
just
like the others, too. However, when Maycomb looks closer at
Mayella's personality and her choices, they discover that she has a decent personality and a
better character than the rest of her family.

Movie: Beautv and the Beast
ln the Disney movie Beautv and the Beast, an arrogant prince turns away an elderly woman,
who offers him a rose in exchange for shelter, during a storm. The old woman then transforms
into a beautiful enchantress, and casts a curse upon the prince, giving him a beastly
appearance. She gives him the rose and instructs him that, in orderto get rid of the curse, the
prince
must make someone fall in love with him before the rose loses all its petals.
Later in the
movie, the "Beast" falls in love with a beautiful girl named Belle; at first, Belle is wary of Beast
because of his appearance, but soon warms up to him. When Belle's suitor, Gaston, finds out
about Beast, he becomes determined to slay the Beast and be proclaimed
a hero. During the
climax of the movie, Gaston and Beast are fighting on a balcony when Gaston stabs his rival
with a small blade; unfortunately, Gaston slips and falls off the balcony into the ravine below,
and Belle embraces Beast in what seems to be his last moments. Belle pronounces
her love for
Beast, and Beast turns into the prince,
his curse broken,
There are two instances during the movie that represent the theme appearances are deceiving;
in the beginning, where the prince
doesn't want to help the elderly woman because of her
appearance, and in the middle, where Belle does not like Beast because of his appearance. The
arrogant prince
didn't believe in helping the old woman and didn't appreciate her gift
exchange; this shows how people
are ignorant of others and only pay attention to their looks
and not their character. When Belle feels wary of the Beast, it shows how people,
because of
fear, choose to
judge
by appearances and don't look at a person,s personality.

Kelly Slater: Best Athlete
Kelly Slater "holds the record for being the youngest and oldest world champion," "Whose
career win percentage over two decades was near 80% and climbing," "who, 20 years after his
debut win as a pro, recaptured a lead in the race for yet another world title," and "who's owned
the top slot in their sport's All-Star voting L5 times, and year-after-year humbles a fresh set of
young rookies -- even those less than half his age -- who are allegedly coming to dethrone
him."lSadly, Kelly Slater is also a surfer, and surfers don't get much recognition as pro-athletes
because some
people consider surfing not a sport.. When comparing Kelly's statistics with
athletes majoring in other sports, including football, basketball, hockey, golf, and more, there is
still no one who has the tremendous skill as Kelly.
Critics don't acknowledge Kelly Slater as a better athlete than most because they consider
surfers as laid-back and not really skilled. Surfing also doesn't
get broadcasted as much as
football or hockey, and people think that if something's not on TV, then it's not that important.
Kelly appears to be the average American surfer-dude, and because of that, people assume that
he isn't that important or skillful as other pro-athletes. This ties in with the theme that
appearances are deceiving because critics only look at Kelly and assume that he's not really a
pro-athlete because he chooses to surf instead of playing football. They don't know about his
humbleness and dedication to surfing, nor do they look at all his statistics.

Pyrite: Fool's Gold
Ever since the California Gold Rush, people have been fooled by iron pyrite, a mineral that
strongly resembles gold. Otherwise known as "Fool's Gold," pyrite is shiny and yellow-gold
in
appearance. However, pyrite is inexpensive and very easy to find while gold is very valuable and
rare' Gold-diggers think pyrite is gold because they can't tellthe difference between the two.
However, pyrite
has different properties
from gold. Gold is very malleable and, when hit by a
hammer, gets squished into a small cake. Pyrite, on the other hand, is brittle, and shatters when
hit. Gold itself doesn't reflect light and is dull and heavy. Pyrite is very shiny and is much lighter
than gold. People also get tricked because pyrite is found in gold-digging
streams,
just
like gold.
Fool's gold literally exemplifies the theme that appearances are deceiving; people get fooled by
pyrite because they only pay attention to how pyrite looks. lf they didn't look at
just
the outside
of the pyrite and actually test the pyrite to observe its properties,
then they would discover
that pyrite is not what it seems to be. Because people don't pay attention, when some of them
try to sell the fool's gold to other unsuspecting people,
those buyers get deceived because they
think that since the sellers found the "gold" themselves and appear to be experienced, they can
trust the sellers.

RPG Game: "Epic
Batfle Fantasy
3"
ln this game
designed by Matt Rosznak, a British game
developer otherwise known as kupo707,
there are three main characters: a swordsman named Matt, a magician named Natalie, and a
gunman
named Lance. Matt, Natalie, and Lance become friends through a battle of strength;
after saving the world once, they seem to have awakened an ancient entity named Akron.
Akron strips them of their powers,
and they become transported into a new dimension. ln
order to regain their powers
and defeat Argon, the three heroes embark on a adventure,
encountering numerous foes and allies on the way. Natalie appears to be weaker than her
comrades and therefore insignificant.
She wears charming dresses, attacks with whimsical
staffs, and is the stereotypical "cute girl."
However, she is the most important of the group;
without her healing abilities, Matt and Lance, in the case of mid-battle death, would never be
revived. lf Natalie dies, then the remaining characters will eventually run out of food items to
replenish their energy and die, causing a game restart.
Natalie's appearance and actual abilities demonstrate how appearances are deceiving; Mr.
Rosznak gives
Natalie a fragile, adorable image and convinces the game-player
that Natalie is
dependent on Matt and Lance for survival. However, when the game-player
actually observes
Natalie's powers
and strength, Natalie proves
to be a worthy ally for Matt and Lance. This
example helps prove
how someone might look a certain way (Natalie
seems fragile and not
important) but end up having characteristics
that deviate from their appearance
{without
Natalie, Matt and Lance won't be able to finish battles).
