News From The Dominican Republic Dear Friends in Christ, Nov. 11, 1991 Greetings in Christ from the Dominican Re public. We have been on the go since our last newsletter. When we stop and look at what has been accomplished, with the Lord's help, we have to give Him the praise for this ministry! Let me give you an up-date as to what all we have been doing. We had the busiest summer of our 18 years of missionary work. We had two groups, one from the Chicago area and one from Christ in Youth. Both groups of young people stayed in Dominican homes and ate Dominican food and made lasting impressions on the people here and were just as touched themselves. The CIY group helped pour the floor and plaster the walls at the Nagua church. Nagua is way up in the country, and since they have no running water we all got to take our baths in the river I We had an outstanding Family Camp in August, with over 350 present. Economic conditions are very hard here and we were worried that it might affect the camp but the people here really sacrificed to get there. They love the fellowship so much. Bob Gurwell from Puerto Rico did an out standing job of preaching and we had at least 18 baptisms on Sunday morn ing. Our Leadership Training Seminars continue to be a blessing for the workers here. We've had Keith Wise, Roger James, and Dean Hammond, all U.S. preachers, here to teach in the last three months. They've been a blessing for the workers and have been blessed by their visits here. We're having Chris DeWelt this month and then Norman Weaver, from Miss ions Services here in December. We've been averaging about 90 for the monthly sessj.ons. It's a lot of woi'k but an economical use of time and money to train our workers. It is interesting that the work in Chile and Mexico are also using this type of program for training their leader ship. _ You received an appeal about the water project in Cabismal to finish a cistern/church. The good people at IDES recently sent $6500 towards that project and it is quickly being finished! We poured the roof of the cistern last Saturday and the blocks are being laid for the church build ing right now. The people there are thrilled and working hard to get the job done. We had to mix all of the concrete, by hand, as there are very few cement trucks here and it was too far up in the mountains. There were 115 bags of cement and rock and sand so it was a long day of hard work but we had a great crew of workers and the job was finished before dark. We also praise the Lord that our van is paid for! We have put it to a lot of hard use and the roads here are very hard on vehicles but it's running well. We appreciate all of you who helped with that project. We have also helped one of the churches in Santiago, at Arroyo Hondo to open a medical clinic that is open every day and on Saturday mornings. Dr. Jose Disla is staffing the clinic and it is in an area of real need and the church is already reaping the benefits. Page 2 - York Family Update The people in the community see that the church is concerned about them and that reflects very well on the congregation. We've got many plans for the next four months. We are hosting a group from the Mundelein, IL church that are coming to pour the roof at the parsonage/clinic in Hoya del Caimito in Santiago. They will be here right after Christmas. We're praying for 500'young people to be in at tendance! Please pray with us for that. It should be exciting! Our family is fine. Suzanne is busy in the mornings teaching Kin der at Emily and Laurie's school. She is really enjoying that. Emily and Laurie are doing very well in school. Their Spanish has acquired the Dominican accent! They have a lot of friends on our street and in school and churches so they keep busy! They both are studying piano and Emily is also studying trumpet. She has also followed her father by having to wear glasses but she doesn't mind too much! Many thanks to the churches in Ironton, Ohio, Old Union at Dan ville, IL, and Nebo, KY for their care packages! We have really enjoyed the "goodies" that you sent. We have had real difficulties with the power outages since July. In August and September the lights were out about 15-18 hours a day. Our water was off last weekend and we've had very low water pressure since August but you really get used to it pretty quickly! We get our exercise hauling water! Thanks again for your prayers and help. Because this is such a growing work, more funds are always welcome. Let us know if your church or class would like to help.
