The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is
a museum of modern and
contemporary art, designed by
Canadian-American architect Frank
Gehry, and located in Bilbao, Basque
Country, Spain. The Museum was
inaugurated in 1997. Set on the edge
of the Nervin River in Bilbao , Spain,
the Guggenheim Museum is a fusion
of complex , swirling forms.
The object was to design a building
with a strong identity. The museum
had to make the citizens take their
city back, which was once a port city
that had seen better days. Its
factories and shipyards were closing
one after the other. The museum had
to be a monument, which would

THE ATRIUM-As you enter, you
see an atrium which is truly
the heart of the museum
around which the various
exhibitions are organized. It is
crowned by a metal flower.

THE SALVE BRIDGE-
The bridge is
integrated into the
building by the means
of a tower located at
the end of Gallery 101
running beneath the
bridge.

EXHIBITION

The museum has
twenty exhibition
galleries, some of
them with regular
proportions and
others with
curved shapes.

arches which is
entirely column

THE TRAMWAY CROSSING-
In the route through the
city, the tramway passes
underneath the museum.
The office building is
located above it in blue .

THE ENTRANCE
PLAZA The plaza
connects the
museum to the city
and organizes the
transit of pedestrians

SPACES
The building has 4 ways to be
accessed:
1-the main entrance is from the
plaza 2- The stairs that connect the
plaza to the lower floor. 3- Access
from the estuary. 4- Access from
the foot bridge.

TITANIUM SURFACES
Different materials for different shapes
have been used. The cladding of the
classic galleries is in stone square or
rectangular. The buildings curved
volumes are covered with thin titanium
panels. Titanium gives the building its
identity, a skin comprising of 24,000
sq.m of metal plates. The repetition of
sheets folded emphasizes the
movement
