The 63-year old National Institute of Engineering, popularly
called NIE, stands at the 59 th position among Indias top 75 Engineering Colleges, which includes IITs and NITs. It is the 4 th best engineering college among 160+ VTU affiliated colleges Approved by the All India Council for Technical Education, NIE is a grant-in aid institution and is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation. It is one of the 14 colleges in Karnataka state that was recognized and given autonomous status under Ministry of Human Resources Development- World Bank Technical Education Quality Improvement Project. NIE is one of the only two colleges in Karnataka that has been granted permanent affiliation by Visvesvaraya Technological University for all its courses. NIE offers degrees in undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes and provides certificates and post-graduate diploma courses.
Eicher Motors Incorporated in the year 1982, is the flagship company of Eicher group in India and a significant player in the Indian automobile industry. It had a technical and financial collaboration with Mitsubishi Motor Corporation of Japan to manufacture commercial vehicles. It is also the first company in India to have fully built-up indigenously developed heavy commercial vehicles (HCV). Presently, Eicher Motors is 50-50 joint venture with the Volvo group. It has involved in business activities ranging from design, manufacturing and marketing of reliable, fuel efficient, commercial vehicles of high quality and modern technology to manufacture engineering components and providing engineering design solutions. The Eicher trucks & buses manufacturing unit is based at Pithampur, near Indore. It has a work force of over 3000 employees with a sales turnover of USD 570 million. NIE-Eicher Centre for Automobile Technology (NECAT) Established under the ambit of Industry-Institute Collaboration at the NIE Golden Jubilee Complex, NECAT became operational since February 2009. Besides providing top-notch training and education to students and faculty members of Industrial/Vocational Training Institutes, Polytechnic Institutes and Engineering Colleges, the Centre is also conducting training programmes for the industry and automobile dealers. Main objectives of the Centre Implement Eicher Technical Training Programme, a proprietary teaching and education programme in Automobile Engineering and Technology Provide top-notch training and education to students and faculty members of Industrial/Vocational Training Institutes, Polytechnic Institutes and Engineering Colleges, and to industry personnel and automobile dealers Extensive hands-on practical sessions on the most scientific way of repair, maintenance and overhaul of commercial vehicles Create research facilities Offer Post-graduate Diploma in Automobile Technology, and joint certification Organise workshops and seminars Facilities Training at NECAT is a combination of theory and practice facilitated in an excellent environment. The Centre has been well equipped with practice units, dynamic cut-section models, special tools, wall charts, measuring instruments and diagnostic equipment for practical sessions. Of course, modern amenities and teaching aids are part of the Centre. In order to ensure that the training is conducted in the most scientific manner possible, both in-house faculty members and experts from proprietary item manufacturers, like BOSCH, Meritor,Cummins Turbo Technologies, JK Tyres, India Pistons, ZF India, Setco Automotive, Indian Oil Corporation, Kirloskar Bearings, Hubert Ebner, etc., are invited to handle classes. NECAT is comprehensive and geared-up to impart the best-in-class training in Automobile Technology. Basic Course on Automobile Technology (BCAT) Objective: To make the participants understand the product specifications, controls, operations, working principles of all aggregates (like engine, clutch, transmission, etc), pre-operational checks, routine maintenance and trouble shooting of commercial vehicles with extensive practical classes. Product range covered: LCV / MCV / HCV / MAV / BSIII / CNG / New Products Participants: Students of ITI/Vocational Training Institutes, Diploma and Engineering Duration: 6 days. Fee: Rs 2000/- per candidate Course content: Introduction & Preliminary test. Understanding vehicle specifications on vehicle. Working principle of diesel & petrol engine. Advantages & disadvantages. Engine terminology & demo of this on dynamic cut section. How engine works theory & practical sessions. Advanced Course on Automobile Technology (ACAT) Objective: To make participants understand the scientific way of maintenance/repairing and overhauling of all aggregates (like engine, clutch, transmission, etc), troubleshooting and new automotive technologies in commercial vehicles with extensive practical classes. Product range covered: LCV / MCV / HCV / MAV / BSIII / CNG / New Products Participants: Students of ITI/Vocational Training Institutes, Diploma and Engineering Duration: 12 days Fee: Rs 3000/- per candidate Pre-requisite: Basic Course on Automobile Technology (BCAT) Course content: Introduction & Preliminary test. Introduction to Engine Different types of engines like BSIII, CNG, CRDE etc., Introduction to Engine systems Intake & exhaust systems, Cooling, Lubrication & Fuel systems. Practical demonstration of engine systems at workshop. Failures, Reasons, counter measures on all systems of engine. Troubleshooting manual briefing & discussion on field complaints pertaining to engine. Brief on Electronic diesel control & CRDE. Engine dismantling & assembling. Introduction to clutch types of clutches & their control mechanisms. Failures, Reasons, counter measures on all type of clutches. Introduction on transmission system. Modular Courses The six modular courses are as follows: Fee: Rs 250 for each module/candidate M1: Vehicle Familiarisation Programme Objective: To make students familiarise with major aggregates/parts of modern commercial vehicles, understanding specifications, brief understanding of working principles of major aggregates. Content: Understanding vehicle from front bumper to rear tail lamp - various controls, aggregates/parts, purposes and usage, vehicle specifications, construction details, Salient features & Working Principle of aggregates, namely, engine, clutch, gear box, propeller shaft, axles, brake, suspension and steering system, Vehicle driving demonstration, details of other commercial vehicles available in Indian market. Duration: 1 day M2: Engine Systems Objective: To familiarize students on various types of IC engines used in modern commercial vehicles, construction and working principles of engine Content: Types of engines - diesel and CNG engines, construction and working principles of diesel and CNG engines, emission norms, BS-I, BS-II & BS-III engines differences, engine diagnostic tools, trouble-shooting. Duration: 1 day
M3: Transmission Systems Objective: To familiarize students on types of gear box and clutch used in commercial vehicles, brief understanding of construction and working principles of gear box and clutch. Content: Need of clutch, working principles and constructional details of clutch and types of clutch. Purpose of transmission, gears and gear ratio, gear ratio and torque, various types of gears, manual transmissions, constant mesh and synchronized gear boxes, transmission control, trouble shooting. Duration: 1 day M5: Braking and Steering Systems Objective: To familiarize students on braking systems and steering systems used in vehicles .brief understanding of constructional details and working principles Content: Classification of brakes, drum brakes and disc brakes, constructional details, theory of braking, concept of dual brake system, parking brake, material, hydraulic system, vacuum assisted system, air brake system, antilock braking and exhaust brake system. Front wheel geometry: castor, camber, king pin inclination, toe-in. conditions for true rolling motion of wheels during steering, steering geometry, Ackermann and Davis steering system, constructional details of steering linkages, different types of steering gear boxes, turning radius, wheel wobble, power assisted steering. Duration: 1 Day M6: Auto Electrical Systems Objective: To familiarize students on Electrical wiring harness, alternator, battery system, Starter motors and various controls. Content: Understanding the various lighting and control circuits, constructional features and working principal of alternators, battery and starter motors.
