Notes from the Pastor - Happy Pentecost Sunday! Happy birthday to the Church! Happy Birthday
to all of us! Pentecost Sunday or the descent of the Holy Spirit is considered the immediate birthday
of the Church! Before the apostles received the Holy Spirit they were scared and they hardly under-
stood what our Lord have taught them and what had happened to Him. When they gathered together
they kept the doors locked and the windows closed. But when they received the Holy Spirit every-
thing changed. They became courageous and remembered and understood everything that our Lord
taught them. They opened the windows and doors and proclaimed the Gospel of Christ. Since then
the body of Christ continued to grow and the church lives on forever, as Christ have promised. Many
powers that persecuted the church, like the Roman Empire, have come and gone, yet the Church con-
tinues to live.
As the Holy Spirit is actively doing His work, for sure the devil continues to oppose it. This ex-
plains all the troubles we are encountering through the history of the Church. With the present prob-
lems the Church is facing with nowadays, some people say and feel that our present church does not
reflect Christ anymore. Some became lukewarm in their faith. A few chose to abandon the Church.
Does this mean the Holy Spirit has abandoned us? Certainly not! The Holy Spirit continues to work
in, with, and through the Church and through us.
In our liturgical celebrations, Pentecost ends the Easter Season and once more we are back to the
Ordinary Time of the year. But the Holy Spirit continues His work of sanctification and inspiration
to all of us. This is part of what Saint Pope John Paul II have envisioned, the new Pentecost-the new
evangelization! Meaning, like the apostles at Pentecost, may we dispose our minds and hearts to His
presence that we may be transformed into the will of God in our lives and the world. With that, like
the first Pentecost may we come out from our doubts and fears and proclaim Christ in our lives by

Influential Saints of the Early Church
This Monday, June 9, is the feastday of ST.EPHREM, of Syria, the only one
of his nation to be honored as a Doctor of the Church. Born in 306 A.D. at
Nisibis in Mesopotamia (no longer a nation but now part of Syria), his Chris-
tian mother raised him to love Christ. However, his pagan Father caused him
to leave home at an early age because he leaned toward Catholic worship. St.
Jacob, bishop of Nisibis, took him under his wing and gave Ephrem a good
education. He was baptized at age 18 and was immediately given the office of
a teacher because of his great knowledge of Catholicism. He wrote many
works in defense of the Church. When Bishop Jacob died, he left teaching and
entered a monastery where he spent the rest of his life as a teaching monk,
explaining the mysteries of our Holy Faith in speech and word. He was known
as The Prophet of the Syrians. He reluctantly accepted his ordination as a
Deacon due to his humility. He died in 373. In 1920, he was given the title,
Doctor of the Church. Fr. John Reinkemeyer said, Sometimes, it seems, it
takes 1600 years to fully realize a mans worth.
ST.BARNABAS, though not one of the Twelve, is considered an Apostle by
the early fathers and St.Luke, himself, because of the great part he took in ap-
ostolic work. He lived in the First Century and was a Jew of the tribe of Levi,
born in Cyprus, a small island nation south of Turkey. His name had been Jo-
seph, but the Apostles changed it to Barnabas when he converted to Christiani-
ty. The name means son of encouragement and he is known by this name
throughout the New Testament. Hes first mentioned in the 4
th
Ch. of Acts
where first converts at Jerusalem lived in common and sold their lands and
other possessions and laid the proceeds at the feet of the Apostles. Barnabas
sold his farm and donated the money to the Apostles. He became a respected
figure in the Christian community in Jerusalem and after Judas took his life,
the Eleven met to elect a successor. Barnabas was on the ballot with Matthias,
and they chose Matthias. One thing was for sure, he wasnt a cry-baby. He
simply went about doing the Lords work, with status or not. Later, he
preached at Antioch, the capital of Syria, along with Paul for a year. Then, they
set out together for Cyprus and various other cities in what is now Turkey. He
attended the First Council of Jerusalem also. Tradition relates that he died in
Cyprus where he was stoned to death around 59 A.D. His feastday is this

St. Josephs Ice Cream Social
St. Josephs Catholic Church in Arma is celebrating its 50th Year Anniver-
sary at its present location. As part of the year long celebration, we are hosting
an Ice Cream social on Sunday, June 22, at 1:30 to 3:00. We would like to
invite the members of your church to come and join in our celebration, tour our
premises, view our picture wall, visit with friends and enjoy the homemade ice
cream.
There is no charge for the afternoon, just an invitation to the community to
share our 50 year celebration. We invite you to view our picture wall that is on
display in the parish hall. It is comprised of the many weddings, baptisms,
first communions, confirmations, anniversaries and family events that have
taken place at our parish over the past 50 years, beginning in December of
1964when the first mass was held in the new church on Christmas.

The Holy Spirit is an untapped deposit in so many of us
as individuals, family, our small Christian community, our
parish and the Church at large. Our lives too can become
His witnesses if we allow Him to act in and through us. The
fruit of the Holy Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22 will be
evident in our lives and interactions. We will be attractive
to others who are stressed up and whose lives are meaning-
less or without love. They will meet Jesus through us. If
we want our Church to grow, we need to develop a greater
communion and fellowship with the Holy Spirit. We should
not just preach about him as an experience. We should not
just invoke his aid before a meeting and then forget about
his presence and guidance while each one tries to get his
own hidden agenda across. The Holy Spirit is the principal
Agent of Evangelization. Let the anointing of the Holy
Spirit at our baptism, confirmation and priesthood be alive
