Assessment Objectives
Reflective learning is central to the development of critical thinking, self-awareness and analytical skills
which are fundamental in effective consulting. Reflection describes the process of deriving meaning and
knowledge from experience and is a powerful means establishing a conscious awareness of how your
learnings can be applied to your personal life, studies and work practices.
Key learning outcomes of this assessment task are:
Challenge past and present realities and perspectives about the business-problem solving process
and consulting practice;
Reflect on personal conduct during the consulting project to self-assess individual strengths and
weakness;
Consciously connect the MGMT30012 experience with the development of new perspectives and
attitudes at a personal and professional level; and
Link experiences (client, project, team and subject) to the subject objectives.
Assessment Task
This assessment is based on your participation and engagement in the four interdependent learning
elements of MGMT30012: (i) Client Visits, (ii) Lectures, (iii) Consultations, and (iv) Peer Learning
Workshops. You are required to write a reflective essay to critically address a series of reflection
questions below. In doing so, you will be required to assess the extent to which your experience in
MGMT30012 has enabled you to achieve the various learning objectives of this subject.

Specifications
You are required to write a reflective essay which involves providing a personal response to experiences,
situations and/or events that you have encountered during the semester. The essay shouldnt be about
critiquing the course, client or assignments. Instead the essay is about you and your experience. There is
neither a right nor wrong way of reflective thinking; there are just questions to explore.
Your essay must address the following three points:
Evaluate the extent to which your MGMT30012 experience has provided you with new insights
and understandings on how the theory and practice of tertiary studies can be applied to resolving
real-world problems;
Draw comparisons and connections between: [1] what you have learnt and experienced in this
subject (i.e. client visits, lectures, consults and workshops), and [2] your prior assumptions and
preconceptions;
In which of the graduate attributes (interpersonal skills, time manage, commercial awareness,
initiative with ambiguity, independent learning and team skills) would you judge yourself
substantially developed? Is there any evidence or specific examples from your experience in this
course to support your claims?
What actions do you plan to take based on what you have learnt in this subject? Discuss this at a
personal (e.g. self-development) and professional (e.g. career-development) level.
In the write up of your reflective essay, please take note of the following guidance on what reflective
writing is and is not.
Reflective Writing Is Reflective Writing Is Not
o Your response to experiences, opinions, events or
new information.
o Your response to thoughts and feelings.
o A way of thinking to explore your learning.
o An opportunity to gain self-knowledge.
o A way to achieve clarity and better understanding
of what you are learning.
o A way of making meaning out of what you study.

argument.
o Pure description, though there may be
descriptive elements.
o Straight forward decision or judgment (eg.
Whether something is good or bad).
o A summary of course notes.
o A standard academic essay (eg. research, etc.)
Marking Criteria for Reflective Essay
While there may not be a right or wrong answer when asked to reveal your thoughts and opinions, the
quality of your essay will be largely determined by evidence of reflective thought that has been conveyed
in your writing. More specifically, you will be evaluated on your ability to article how MGMT30012 has
intersected with your tertiary educational experience.
