Math Coordinate Plane and Ordered Pairs
Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.G.A.1 Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, a
coordinate system, to plot points. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel
from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in
the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the
coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.G.A.2

Objectives: Students will be able to label and graph an ordered pair on a coordinate plane.

Materials: Smart Board, students notebooks, pencils, worksheets

Procedure:
Students will come into class and get their rocket math folders. After rocket math,
students will take out their notebooks and begin the do now.

Introduction:
Do Now trapezoid riddle

Body:
Define coordinate plane and show picture
Explain x-axis and y-axis
Define the origin
Define ordered pair
(x, y) explain I have to walk before I jump. X gets graphed on x-axis and y
gets graphed on y-axis
Now taking what we know about coordinate planes and ordered pairs, we can
now graph ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.

Example 1: Plot K (2, 3)

Example 2: P (1, 4)

Example 3: M (3, 7)

Example 4: Write the ordered pair for each point. Answer: (5, 4)

Example 5: Write the ordered pair for each point. Answer: (2,2)

Example 6: Write the ordered pair for each point. Answer: (0, 3)

Explain classwork worksheets
Pass out tier 1 classwork worksheet. When students finish tier 1, they can work
on Tier 2 worksheet. Tier 3 will be a logic puzzle.

Closing:
Ask: What are important things to remember when graphing ordered pairs on
coordinate planes?
Pass out homework

Assessment: I will know if this lesson was successful if 85% of students are able to correctly
complete the tier 1 classwork handout and if 80% of students are able to complete the tier 2
classwork handout.

Homework: Worksheet on coordinate plane

Management, Transitions, and Differentiation:
Management wait time, stop and think

Transitions transition from morning routine to math, transition from rocket math to
math class, transition from math to morning meeting

Differentiation Smart Board, turn and talk
