INTRODUCTION
The Kingdom of Norway is a Scandinavian constitutional monarchy. It is the second least densely
populated country in Europe. Norway maintains close ties with the EU and its member countries
despite rejecting full EU membership. Norway is not a member of the European Union, but has
signed the Schengen Agreement and is thus participating in the co-operation on common
passport and border control, as well as several other issues within the EU policy area of Freedom,
Security and Justice. Norway is the world's third-largest natural gas exporter; and seventh largest
oil exporter, making one of its largest offshore oil finds in 2011. The country works outside EU
regulations and is thus very prosperous, as everything on their land belongs to the country itself.
Norway has a very high level of economic integration with the EU and their member states. Now
that Norway is a flourishing country is a big plus, but as a student is it convenient to study in
Norway?
To answer this question we will look at:
Best university
Cheapest flights and transport options
Domicile options
Possibility to study in English
Scholarships and grants
Spoken Language
Public transport from the university
Costs of studies
The costs are converted into eurocent as Norway still uses the Norwegian crown.

BEST UNIVERSITY
The University of Stavanger in Norway was reviewed the best on Google maps with 4.7 stars out of
5. The University of Stavanger welcomes a growing number of international students and staff to
the region each year, and hosts numerous projects, events and other cooperation activities every
year. The University has been welcoming students from all over the world since it was established
in 2005. International students form a fundamental part of the community on campus, and
3 | P a g e

currently just over 10% of the students have international background. The university has a lot of
studies to offer.
Cheapest flights and transport options
There is a big variety of studies one can choose from. That is the reason why the University of Stavanger
is one of the best in the country. On the website the students reviews were very positive and that the
University welcomes international students was also one of the reasons that is got almost rated 5 out of 5
stars.

There are several ways to go to Stavanger. If you go by flight then it costs (one way ticket):

There is one direct flight option to Stavanger and the airport is very close to the university.
The airport of Stavanger, Sola, is situated 15
km from downtown Stavanger. The airport
offers daily connections to various airports in
Europe, such as London, Copenhagen and of
course Amsterdam. In addition, there are
frequent departures to Norwegian cities such
as Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Kristiansand.
On the map it takes 15 minutes to go to the
University and 20 minutes to the city center,
which is little more north from the university,
if you go by taxi or own transport.
Unfortunately the public transport drives on
the grey part and that takes nearly an hour.
5 | P a g e

Or one could go by car from the Netherlands to Stavanger and that would take approximately 15
hours, here below are the details.

In 1247 km you arrive in Stavanger, which means
1247:100x5,5L = 68,58 euros (Total kilometers divided by the 100km and then multiplied by the
average fuel consumption 4,5, but for leniency 5,5)
It cost 137 euros when you get carpooled by a driver who would like to drive back. You save more
than hundred euros in comparison with the cheapest flight, but it is a long trip.

DOMICILE OPTIONS
There are two options you can choose from:
Domiciles outside campus:

The prices are considered expensive for a lot of people, but you are in either way close to the
university. On the right you see the price range from the average price. You are also not restricted
to Universitys rules when you take the decision of renting your own place.
DOMICILES ON CAMPUS
The price is approx. NOK 3000-4500 per month which means between 370 euros and 550 euros.
The rooms are fully furnished and have free broadband Internet connection. This is a considerably
cheaper option.
The website of the University of Stavanger notes:
The rooms are very modest with basic furniture only (bed & desk)
The capacity of student housing is limited. Consequently we regret that there is no
housing guarantee
There are no family flats available to international students.
Contracts cover usually one or two full semesters, and full semesters only (5 months*).
It is not allowed to terminate a contract during the first semester
International students cannot change their room with another person in the dorms, nor
change dorms without the approval of SiS Housing. This is due to security reasons
A change in the study plan, in the date of arrival or departure has to be immediately
reported without delay
Reception Opening Hours at SiS Housing: Monday - Friday 08:30 -15:30

POSSIBILITY TO STUDY IN ENGLISH
Most bachelor and master courses are in English. The University provides a Norwegian language
course for the courses that are provided in Norwegian. It offers beginner Norwegian language
7 | P a g e

courses at a reduced rate to new international students. The courses are held twice a week for 12
weeks and four different schedule options are available.
For the English courses it is fundamental that you have passed your TOEFL test (Test of English as
a Foreign Language) in order to follow the classes/programs.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS
Scholarship:
At the University the scholarship is intended to cover expenses in connection with getting
established abroad, as well as additional expenditures. Travel expenses should be covered by the
students financial resources.
PhD students who submit complete application forms are assured funding for three months, but
may apply for extra funding (see below) for extended stays up to six months, or visits shorter than
three months.
-Application procedure
In order to apply, the student must fill out a standard application form.
The intention of the scheme is to help students who cannot get overseas research grants
elsewhere. It is mandatory that you have tried to attain funding from external sources before
applying for the UiS scholarship, and that you inform the Faculty if you obtain external funding.
The application must contain:
Completed application form
Binding invitation from the host institution, confirming that you, upon arrival, will have a place to
work and professional follow-up
Rejection from external funding source(s), or document showing that there are no relevant
external funding sources
The main supervisor must sign the application and confirm that the overseas research stay will be
an integrated and relevant part of your doctoral study.
Within one month upon returning from your research stay, the Faculty must receive a report that
briefly describes the academic value of the stay and the use of the scholarship. The report form
will be sent to you.

GRANTS
Mostly the PhD programs are granted or a scholarship scheme is set up. There are different ways
to fund a PhD program. Private funding is normally not allowed. When an applicant is the
addressee of external funding, the employment relation is not managed by the University of
Stavanger. In this situation, the financial terms of participation in the PhD program must be
clarified by the funding party and the University of Stavanger before the application can be
approved.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT OF UNIVERSITY
The university has a PICK-UP SERVICE
The University of Stavanger organizes pick-up service for new international students at the
beginning of Autumn/Spring semester. The service includes pick-up at the airport and
transportation to your accommodation and is available only during Arrival Days. There is no
continuous connection available from airport to university provided by the university, there is
enough public transport in the area to bring you to your destination, whoever by own expenses of
course.
COSTS OF STUDIES
Now this might be the most important topic. Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the
world, as already seen at the apartment rent prices outside of campus.
STUDY COSTS
The University of Stavanger is a state university and does not charge tuition fees. All students are
required to pay a registration fee of NOK 700 per semester (approx. 90). One needs to bear
COSTS OF LIVING
All students from non EU/EEA countries should be able to document financial means equivalent
to full funding by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund at the current rate. For the
academic year 2013-14 this amounts to approx. NOK 95000 or 11700 euro that is intended to cover
living expenses during one academic year, including housing. So parents have to be ready put
aside a thousand euros a month in order for the student to live without any financial problems.

These statistics count for the whole city of Stavanger. Here underneath you can find the prices in
local currency. If you apply the stats above then you need to sum up 2750 NOK (340 euros) for
semester fees, textbooks and one IKEA trip to buy necessities. Total sum up first month is approx.
1330 euros 10800 NOK and then it drops to the normal sum up per month of 8050 NOK or about
990 euros.

CONCLUSION
Very short and simple, Norway is the place to be when you are well off. They have a great
educational system and all the reviews were very positive. Unfortunately Norway is very expensive
and this makes it harder to live over there. The main suggestion is if you want to study in a
Scandinavian country and you are interested in the Petroleum Engineering or the Petroleum
Geosciences Engineering or such than this is your best shot. Norway is an ace in these subjects. If
not then I would consider a cheaper and closer to home option. If you are interested in this
university, then please visit the website uis.no and follow University of Stavanger on Google+.
