Night Series.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IN TDE?

I have 450+ people on my email list and our Facebook page has 665 members now.

WHY DO SO MANY RIDERS OF ALL AGES AND PACES RIDE WITH TDE?
Our winning formula was no dues, no meetings, no officers and no by-laws or rules.
That and we ride from taverns, not BFE.
HOW DO PEOPLE JOIN / CONTACT YOU?
Im the sole contact and I can be reached by

My honorary title is Grand Pooh-Bah which is how most people know me. Just to

GETTING A FEEL FOR TDE

Heres a few things you should know about us
Our credo is: Its never too late to have a happy
childhood.
We dont have any club officers, we have a Grand
Pooh-Bah and thats all we need.
Only one rule: Be nice.
We ride bikes and drink beer. (not always in that
order)
You will never pay dues. (but, Weve been known
to pass the hat)
You will never have to plan or lead a ride. (We
have Ride Captains for that)
Our meetings take place in the tavern were riding from.
The Agenda: having fun and making new friends.
All you have to do is ride.

The History of TDE in two paragraphs (as told by the Grand Pooh-Bah)
Tour dEville started in the late 90s as a small group of friends that met to ride on weekends. At the 1998 Great Pumpkin Metric they
entered the EBCs Team contest and chose the name Tour dEville taken from one of many nicknames for Evansville.
Their lead was Gene Tenbarge. Back then Genes style was follow me. I joined up in 2001 when I started working at Mead Johnson.

HEALTHY LIVING

What we Learned from Jim Fix

by Lisa Bell

Do you remember Jim Fixx? It is always surprising to me that a man

who had such impact on exercisers for an entire generation seems
largely forgotten. For those who do not remember, Jim is the author of
the 1970s best-selling book, The Complete Book of Running. He is also
the man who is credited with popularizing the sport of running to help
start Americas fitness revolution.
The story of Jim Fixx is particularly ironic. A man who at 35 was
overweight and unfit working a high-stress, sedentary job as a magazine
editor, Jim took up running after pulling a muscle in a tennis game.
His father had suffered a heart attack at age 35 and lived the life of an
invalid until his death 8 years later. Jim believed that running would
help him avoid the same fate.
Jims prescription for living to 100 was to run 10 miles a day seven
days a week. Period. Fixx believed that changing
his nutritional program would simply muddy the
waters since it was the exercise that would help
him live beyond 100, not his diet. He preached
that running alone could provide immunity
against heart disease without a change in diet or
supplemental vitamins and minerals.
Jim not only ignored his peers who advocated
a healthy diet, he publicly criticized them. The
worlds leading authority on eating a healthful diet
to heal clogged arteries at that time was Nathan
Pritikin, who wrote Diet for Runners. Pritikin
described a conversation he had with Jim Fixx.

In 1984, six months after this conversation, a man was discovered

lying dead beside a road in northern Vermont clad only in shorts and
running shoes. That man was Jim Fixx. At only 52- years of age the
nations leading spokesperson for the health benefits of running had
died of a massive heart attack. Dr. Joel Wallach, author of the classic
Dead Doctors Dont Lie, and nominee for the 1991 Nobel Prize in
Medicine says, Jim Fixx had five cardiomyopathy heart attacks in his
52nd year due to a deficiency in the mineral selenium. The fifth one
killed him. He paid a terrible price for his belief that nutrition doesnt
matter and that exercise by itself is completely protective.

Exercise is king,
and nutrition is
queen. Put them
together and
youve got a
kingdom.
- Jack LaLanne

Jim phoned me and criticized the chapter Run

and Die on the American Diet in my book The
Pritikin Promise. In that chapter I said that many
runners on the average American diet have died and will continue
to drop dead during or shortly after long-distance events or training
sessions. Jim thought the chapter was hysterical in tone and would

54

frighten a lot of runners .Too many men, I told Jim, had already died
because they believed that anyone who could run a marathon in under
four hours and who was a nonsmoker had absolute immunity from
having a heart attack.

So why is it that exercise alone is not sufficient

by itself to achieve long-term health? One
answer lies in Dr. Ken Coopers 1994
groundbreaking book called The Antioxidant
Revolution. Dr. Cooper described a process
called oxidative stress which he indicated
was the underlying cause of over 70 chronic
degenerative diseases. The same process that
causes iron to rust or a cut apple to turn
brown is the underlying initiator of diseases
like coronary artery disease, cancer, strokes,
arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimers,
dementia, and macular degeneration. That is
because oxygen, which is essential for life, is
also dangerous during metabolism due to the
unstable molecules it creates in the body called
free radicals.

When we exercise moderately we kick off a limited amount of free

radicals. But when we exercise excessively, as in the case of distance

Ask yourself: Do you get the recommended 9 to 12

servings of fruits and vegetables per day?
runners or professional athletes, the number of free radicals increases
exponentially. This process breaks down cells outer wall, ushering in
infection, DNA damage, and even cancerous mutations. It is why Dr.
Cooper discovered that some athletes who trained intensely ended up
later struggling with serious chronic illness.
In order to protect athletes from this dangerous side of oxygen Dr
Cooper and other health professionals recommend antioxidants which
act as bodyguards for healthy cells. Although our diets provide the best
source of antioxidants, most Americans fall short of the recommended
9 to 12 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Most consume only
1-2 daily servings leaving them woefully under protected.
To compensate, the American Medical Association recommended in
2002 that all adults supplement their diet. However, since the FDA
does not regulate the supplement market and there are significant
differences in the quality, bioavailability, and absorption of supplement
products, consumers must do their own research. An effective way to
determine the quality of a vitamin supplement is to measure whether
the most-difficult-to-absorb molecules have made their way from the
gastrointestinal tract into the cell. Protective antioxidants provide this
benchmark since they are fat-soluble and do not readily disperse in the
watery environment of the gut.

healthy life. Without adequate nutrients in the body exercise can

actually accelerate chronic degenerative disease and even death.
Perhaps fitness icon Jack LaLanne, who recently died healthy at the ripe
old age of 96, said it best, Exercise is king, and nutrition is queen. Put
them together and youve got a kingdom.
Lisa Bell RN, MBA is a health coach who writes and lectures widely
on the impact of lifestyle on the aging process. As a business owner
she leads a team of health care professionals, gyms, and individuals
working to inspire positive lifestyle change in the community. A
former ICU nurse, pharmaceutical and nutritional executive, Lisas
career has spanned from the bedside of dying patients to the corporate
boardroom. Over the past quarter century she has researched and
