GATEWAY TO CAMPUS|An Extensive Look At Talleys Public Realm
FINDINGS
The majority of people found on the site proved to
be walking by, while a lesser equal amount of people
were found to be leaving or entering the gym or stu-
dent center.
Few people walked in groups, either socializing or
carrying food in their hands. The people who walked
alone were either listening to music with headphones
or were using their phones while walking.
As many as ten people were found riding their skate-
board or jogging down Cates ave. A majority of zone
three was used by cars, slowing down when pedes-
trians crossed the street.
ANALYSIS
The public realm outside the entrance Talley was
well-used, considering the cold weather during the
time of observation. If the weather was warmer, we
suspect that more students could have been found
outside using the space.
There were many physical attributes that people
could have interacted with on the site. Thse include
the benches beside the ramp, the bicycle rack near the
gym, and the crosswalk between Talley and Carmi-
chael Gym. Many of the surfaces that people walked
on indicated change bychanges in elevation (steps
and ramps) or changes material (brick and concrete).
Talley provided shelter while the sidewalk beside
the gym was open to above. Cates avenue is a safe
street for pedestrians as well as for vehicles. Cer-
tain objects in the street indicated vehicles to slow
down such as speed bumps or the painted stripes on
the road. Overall, the area is utilized as a transition
space between buildings, with little opportunities to
gather.

IMPLICATIONS
As part of the new plan for the Talley Student Cen-
ter, Duda/Paine Architects developed a new scheme
which includes an improved entrance area.
...[the student center] creates a crossroad -
both literally and fguratively- that refects and en-
hances a contemporary intersection of traditional
academic boundaries through social activity.... The
signifcant indoor and outdoor public spaces encour-
age interaction.
Designed to be a cultural hub, the entrance to the
student center will focus on creating a social atmost-
phere virtually accessible to all people while creating
an aesthetic environment.
LOCATION
The location we chose to observe is on NC States
campus, located between the Talley Student Center
and Carmichael Gym. The site boundaries were de-
lineated by physical features on the site, such as the
curb stops or changes in material.
SITE CONDITIONS
The feld research was completed on Sunday Janu-
ary 27, 2013 from 2:00p.m. to 3:00p.m. The tem-
perature was roughly 40 degrees Farenheight. The
weather conditions were sunny with a slight chill,
and weak winds.
Background noise was present in the form of cars
passing by, people talking, and generators running
near the gym.
METHODOLOGY
The site was divided into fve subareas, each based
on the material changes and phsyical attributes pres-
ent on the site. Between three group members, three
rounds of observation were done so that each zone
was observed three times.
For each round, one member would consecutively
observe two zones. Each round lasted briefy fve
minutes. In our observations we took note of the
peoples gender, whether they were in a group, the
direction they were heading towards, and the activ-
ity they seem to be doing.
After our feld observation, the data was translated
from the physical base map to a digital fle, where
the peoples locations were best placed with accu-
racy.
RESEARCH AIM
The aim of this feld assignment was to assess the
use of space between Talley Student Center and
Carmicahel Gym.
What spaces are used more duing certain times of
the day?
What physical attributes afect peoples decisions in
where they were going?
How efective is the design of the space so that it
may be used most efciently?
