Brazilians enjoy the holidays. The biggest
celebration is Carnaval, which is a party
linked to the Christian calendar. It is the
last feast before Easter and takes place
during the three days before Ash
Wednesday. There are 3 national days in
Brazil. The first one, Tiradentes Day, is
held on 4/21 and commemorates the first
attempt at independence in 1789.
Independence Day, on 9/7, celebrates
the foundation of the nation in 1822, while
the Proclamation of the Republic Day,
on 11/15, remembers the creation of the
first government a few months later.

Brazil has the greatest variety of animals in
the world. Its thought to be home to 70% of
the worlds animal species. There are about
600 species of mammals. The rivers hold at
1,500 species of fish. There are 1,600
species of birds more than any other
country. There are many reptile species, too,
including 5 types of alligators. 100,000
different insects and bugs have been listed so
far! There are at least 3,000 different species
living in every square mile of forest. Most live
in the worlds largest jungle, the Amazon rain
forest. But, not all of Brazil is made up of
jungle. About 60% of the country is covered
in grasslands (or pampas), pine forests, and
semideserts.

Almost all Brazilians are descended from 3
ethnic groups: the Amerindians, European
settlers (mainly from Portugal), and Africanz
forcibly shipped there as slaves. Since the
beginning, these groups have mixed. The
Portuguese settlers, who were mostly young
men seeking new lives, married Amerindian
women. Their children were called
mamelucos. A few years later, when
Africans began to arrive, there was more
integration. Cafusos, had Amerindian and
African parents. The children of Europeans
and Africans were called mulattos.
The number of Brazilians has tripled in the
last 50 years, making the population the fifth
largest in the world.

Brazilians are soccer crazy and their country
has produced some of the sports greatest
players including Edson Arantes Nascimento,
better known as Pele. Brazil has won the
soccer World Cup more than any other
country five times. Basketball, volleyball,
auto racing, and martial arts also attract large
audiences. The country has been chosen to
host the 2016 Olympic Games, the first to be
held in South America.
Brazil is famous for its contributions to music
which include samba and bossa nova.
Brazilians, especially those living in the
populous Southeast region of the country,
love to spend their leisure time at the many
beaches found there.

Landmarks
Landmarks
Cristo Redentor, the Statue of Christ the
Redeemer, stands on Corcavado
Mountain overlooking the city of Rio de
Janeiro. It shows Jesus standing with his
arms stretched out, welcoming all people.
It was built by engineer Heitor da Silva
Costa, and is one of the tallest statues in
the world.
The Amazon River is the world's 2nd
longest river, but it is the widest, and has
more water floeing through it than any
other. Catfish in the Amazon can grow to
over 200 pounds. The Amazon river lies
on the equator.
