Introduction

Okay so here you are going to write a short paragraph about the history of the sub genre of Jazz
you are going to discuss. I would aim to make this around 200 words. Certainly no more than 250,
this doesn't gain you any marks here, but sets up the essay nicely to lead into the main discussion
and informs the reader.

- Here you want to include documented dates the genre came about, early recorded examples and
pioneers. This will lead you into the main marked section of the written report.

Stylistic Interpretation.

Stylistic Requirements for the music.
- Instrumentation. - Okay so here we are going to discuss the instrumentation that is featured
within your track, bullet pointing here is fine as you're only identifying, but be sure to back up with
an analysis for the DISTINCTION, EXPLAIN for a PASS. Once all instruments have been noted,
you can then compare this to your research of the genre, i.e "is there are large ensemble of
instrumentation or is the ensemble small? - this essentially means how many musicians are within
the band. Are the instruments featured within this track typical of the genre discussed?

Typical instrumentation of a Rock N Roll band is:
- Vocals
- Lead Guitar
- Rhythm Guitar
- Bass
- Drums
What can be said about the genre of music your analysing?

Backup your findings by comparing the instrumention of the song you have analysed with another
of the same genre using wording like: "Drawing attention to another example of
DjentDeathMetalCore we can see that Professor Xavia has also used an ensemble that consists
of ............., this also suggests that a typical instrumental line up of genre X contains ......."

Finally, conclude this section by stating why you think the ensemble consisted of these
instruments, what value do they possess?

Aim for this section to be around 350-400 words.

Once you have documented the instrumentation used for the song, continue onto discuss the
following:

Artistic Phrasing and Detail
- Before half term we looked at a case study of Minnie the Moocher by Cab Calloway. Calloway is
an early example of a Pioneering Cool Jazz musician. During the first initial bars of the song, we
analysed the horn section and concluded:

- The horns are back on the beat - lazy sounding, no urgency, long sustained notes.
- Lead trumped, muted to create a distinct 'dirty/ sleazy effect.
- Lead vocal melody line, notes are sustained, draw out, not rushed.
- Scat vocal technique used, typical of this era of Jazz?

Lyrical Content (If any - if not, why not?)
- Again, during our in-class analysis of Minnie the Moocher we identified that the topic of the song
was Prostitution/ Adultery/ Gold-digging.All of which are poorly regarded within society, could this
be reflected within the previous examples of instrumentation discussed? I think so!

**** Conclude this section by drawing any relation to the genre. DOES THE TOPIC RELATE TO
THE GENRE? Or does it share any relevance. I.e Rock N Roll - Lyrical content: Money, Adultery,
Drugs etc.....

!!!!THEORY!!!!
Okay. I get it, this is the easy peasy part you have been waiting for and can't get enou.... okay,
whatever! But this is the part of the essay the brief is most interested in and where the marks lie.

IMPORTANT - You do not need to do an entire song - just a few bars from an improvised
section.

Although many of you are stressing for this section, if we get into the nitty gritty of the
the assignment brief its not actually that difficult....

Chords, Scales and Modes
This is the easy bit - Providing you can find the manuscript/ tab/ notation of the music you are
working from, it should contain the chords, if not written out, then notated.
- Now for a PASS it asks to EXPLAIN
- My interpretation of this would be to literally EXPLAIN the chords - do we see any trends here?
Well, within Jazz music we see a lot of 7th chord types, dom7, Maj7, min7 etc... why is this, what
intervals are contained within these chords? - All this has been discussed within class. 1 3 5 7
etc....

- For Pass, I wouldn't even go into detail on modes, you can simply imply what scale is being
used, whether it is Minor, or Major tonality. What basic modes imply this? Ionian for major and
Dorian/ Aeolian for Minor depending on the chord.x
Cheet - Dorian 1 2 3b 4 5 6 7b
Aeolian 1 2 3b 4 5 6b 7b

- For MERIT you are asked to ILLUSTRATE
- My interpretation of this is to put these chords into some form of context, to do this you need to
find out the key signature of the song and work out how the chords relate, this is what we did
during today's lesson. i.e C D E F G A B - a progression Am//// C//// F//// G//// is known as a vi I IV
V (6 1 4 5) chord progression in the Key of C.

- For Merit you can add more illustration to the Pass answer. Why does a particular mode relate to
the chords being used? Tie this back to the modes of the major scale again state whether the
tonality of the chords imply major minor or atonal, If major, then it may be Ionian, Mixolydian or
Lydain, if minor then Dorian Aeolian etc.....

- DISTINCTION
- My interpretation of a DISTINCTION grade answer for this would be as follows: Create a fully
detailed ANALYSIS into the basic underpinning of a section of the song. How the chords related
to the tonic (key of the song). Including all of the above mentioned within
the PASS and MERIT sections of the criteria.

- For a DISTINCTION I would expect to see accurate knowledge being displayed regarding the
modes; use the melody line to help you extract what notes are being used over the chords,
compare what notes lie within the measure (bar) and what notes are within the chord, this will tell
you what mode is being implied over the chord.

Conclusion
Write up a quick conclusion to tie all your findings back to the original aim of your essay and state
your findings here. This should be done after you have finished each genre.

Final Conclusion
Ensure your report is not lacking that shiny professional look with this all new product!!! Final
Conclusion!!!!! With the all new 2014 JTH conclusion you should include what all your findings
show, and how you have benefited from completing this task.

!!!!!!!!ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!

AT ALL TIMES WHILST DOING THIS WORK, ENSURE IT TIES BACK TO MELODIC
IMPROVISATION, IMPROVISATION BEING THE KEY WORD HERE IN THE BRIEF. MAKE
SURE THE WORK YOU ARE ANALYSING FEATURES IMPROVISED SECTIONS.

Now, all you need to do is do this for three contrasting songs, and BOOM, you essay will be
done.

Good luck guys, and I hope this email helps with your work.
