1. Employee at Company A places a DID voice call to colleague at Company B
2. At completion of call, respective Session Management Edition systems send call details

and validation ticket to Company As Unified CM Session Management Edition, via IME
4. Next time employee at Company A calls colleague, Unified CM Session Management

Capacity Planning
On the ASA, capacity will depend on the type, whether audio
or video, and number of calls flowing through it.
Unified CM does not limit the number of IME calls it can
handle. It should be incorporated in the sizing tool when
doing the cluster design.
IME servers are sized according to how many enrolled DIDs
will be published on them.
Platform Maximum number of
Enrolled DIDs
Cisco MCS 7825-H2/I2 and 7825-H4/I4 20,000
Cisco MCS 7845-H2/I2 and 7845-I3 40,000

24
Cisco Intercompany Media Engine
Dial Plan Considerations
Use +E.164 form to identify the calling and called
numbers in all participating IME-enabled Unified CM
clusters.
E.164 Transformation Profile can be applied to an
associated IME trunk or gateway.
E.164 Transformation Profile is configured in Unified
CM under:
Advanced Features > Intercompany Media Services >
E.164 Transformation
The transformation method to a globalized +E164
format is specifically used in IME voice call records
and is necessary for IME processing.

25
Cisco Intercompany Media Engine
Design Considerations
Ensure Global Reachability of IME-enabled Unified CM
CUCM advertises to IME service and shared on DCR ring
External reachability and can be resolved by all Enterprises.
PSTN Fallback can be triggered by ASA
ASA detects degraded voice quality based on threshold set by CUCM
NTP required for Voice Call Records
VCR timestamps are an item used to match calls for verification
Call Restrictions by Blocking Learned Routes
IME Trust all calls by default but policy can be restricted based on
prefixes or domains.

26
Cisco Intercompany Media Engine
Design and Feature Limitations

disabled on the SIP trunk.
Stateful failover of IME is not supported.
Only existing SIP features and messages are
supported.

Cisco CUCM Session Management Edition
Design Considerations
The Design Must Ensure That Inbound and Outbound Trunks
Calls Are Evenly Distributed Across All Nodes in the Cluster.
The following factors will influence your design:
The types of Trunk used
Location of the primary node for a Route List
The number of CUCM nodes in the SME cluster and leaf clusters
Two factors consideration when designing for load balancing:
Route Local: Phone and Route List registration have an influence on
which server is used to initiate outbound calls
Trunk Type: Different Trunk types have different configuration
capabilities with respect to source and destination IP addresses and
port numbers These Trunk configuration capabilities have a
corresponding effect on how multiple Trunks of the same type are
configured between clusters
2010 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public BRKCOL-1985
41
Cisco CUCM Session Management Edition
Design Considerations
Scalability and sizing is based on Traffic Profiles
To correctly size the cluster it is important to collect real traffic profiles determining
percentage of calls that are intracluster, intercluster and offnet based on BHCA,
BHCC and average Call Hold Time. These traffic profiles may be based on the
average traffic per user or per trunk type.
Avoid use of static MTP
Non-MTP trunks offer more codec choices, support voice, video and encryption. It
does not anchor the trunk calls to MTP resources.
System Test features and functionality between UC systems
connected to SME
UC System testing should verify call flows and features. Go to
www.cisco.com/interoperability and select the link for Cisco Unified
Communications Manager Session Management Edition for what has been
tested by Cisco.

Cisco CUCM Session Management Edition
Key Takeaways
Central point of call routing and application aggregation extending B2B
communications through Intercompany Media Engine network.
Allows enterprises to consolidate PSTN access through one or more
central sites or leverage Service Provider SIP trunks at substantial cost
savings.
It may also be used to connect to third-party unified communications
systems and aggregate PBXs for migration to Unified Communications.

InterCompany Cisco TelePresence
IP Routing and Dial Plan Considerations
IP Routing with or without NAT/PAT on the Firewall
Enterprise internally advertises SP Exchange IP address to the Cisco
TelePresence CUCM servers and CTS endpoints.
External IP subnet is provided by SP Exchange for the Firewalls outside
network that is then advertised into the MPLS network using NAT or PAT.
or
Enterprise uses a non-private subnet for the Firewalls outside that is
advertised into the MPLS network for NAT and PAT or directly assigned on
CUCM cluster and CTS endpoints.
Dial Plan based on unique/same access code or unique route patterns
E.164 numbers for Enterprise CTS Endpoints
Unique access code for I-CCT calls such as 8+E.164 number
Same access code as PSTN calls such as 9+E.164 number
Unique route patterns for each remote I-CCT TelePresence number with
individual DNs or DN ranges.
