About the School:
The Michael E. Berdy School, Public School 188
New York City Community School District 21K
New York City, New York
Grades: Pre-K-5
The Need
The Michael E. Berdy School in New York City researched
LEGO Education WeDo
many programs that would help prepare their students for the
future. The staff wanted students to be turned on at school
by being engaged in their work and learning to think critically.
They wanted a program that enabled all students gifted
and talented, general, and special needs to work both
collaboratively and independently on projects.
The Solution

Principal Fred Tudda and his staff implemented LEGO
Education solutions in their school as part of the daily

instructional program, as an after-school program, as an
enrichment program, and periodically as a Saturday family
program. They chose to include WeDo sets, software, and
curriculum combined with additional brick sets. They made a big
investment, and its yielding big results.
The Results

Within the first year of implementation, school attendance
has improved, and there is a noticeable increase in student

engagement and participation. The program is changing the
way students are thinking and the way they are working and
enabling them to develop 21st-century skills. First of all, students

are now thinking critically when reading a book or working on

a math problem. Second, the solutions have changed the way
students are thinking about their futures, discussing college
and professional careers. Third, the program has allowed for

LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3
A Teachers Story
My students are sometimes challenged, frustrated, thrilled, but
always engaged, says Tom Dubick, teacher at Charlotte Latin
School, Charlotte, North Carolina, on using robotics to teach
in his middle school classroom. The use of robotics to teach
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) allows
students to be rewarded for effort and creativity. They cant
memorize the correct answer but instead have to use higherlevel thinking skills to solve problems and meet challenges.
As Tom says, Every time the robot does what it is told
(programming), but not what the student intended, they begin to
understand programming and engineering. By being in control
of their learning, they begin to overcome their fears of math and
science. This not only opens their minds to new futures and
careers such as engineering but also teaches them 21st-century
skills that they will use in any career path they choose.

teach using LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3. It enables students to build,

Activity Pack
Make It Move: Students are challenged

to design, build, and program robots
that move using motors with rotation
sensors. In five projects, students apply
mathematics and science knowledge
to create robots that measure distance
and speed, move without using wheels,
maximize power to move up an incline,
and move and turn to create regular
polygons. Students will also apply their
knowledge of simple and complex
machines and use ratios to describe
proportional relationships.
Make It Smarter: Students are challenged
to add sensors to their robots to control
behavior and to measure, graph, and
analyze sensor data. In five projects,
students develop robots that use sensors
that measure ambient and reflected
light, distinguish specific colors, measure
distance from an object, recognize
a touch-sensor state (pressed or not
pressed, or pressed and released), and
measure angular displacement or rate of
change.
Design Engineering Projects is a curriculum

package with 30 hours of classroom instruction and
open-ended problem-solving activities that make
learning science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics through real-life robotics
engaging and fun for students.
The structure of the activities in the
Design Engineering Projects curriculum
mimics the engineering design process
used by scientists and engineers in
many industries. Each project starts with a design brief

E V3 Middle School Science Activity Pack
NEW
Developed together with Fraunhofer, a global application-oriented

research organization, in close collaboration with science teachers, this
activity pack consists of 14 physical science experiments for middle school
that utilize the data-logging capabilities of the LEGO MINDSTORMS
Education EV3 hardware and software, as well as the LEGO Education
Renewable Energy Set and the MINDSTORMS Temperature Sensor.
The experiments are centered on renewable energy (energy production
and consumption), thermal physics (boiling/melting points and heat
transmission), mechanics (forces and motions), and light (light intensity).
Each experiment is structured to fit within a 45- to 90-minute science lesson
with small, engaging LEGO models that do not require a lot of time for
building and programming.
The Middle School Science activity pack is correlated to Next
Generation Science Standards and will be available in March 2014.

The Need

In a traditional learning environment, students
are often asked to master concepts using a penciland-paper approach. All too often this methodology
fails to really capture students attention and engage
them in a learning process resulting in a deeper
comprehension of core content. Years of elementary
teaching experience brought this subject to light for
Breigh Rhodes, a third-grade teacher at Zachary Elementary
in Zachary, Louisiana. Over time, Breigh has come to believe
that students must be actively involved when they are learning.
I find that generally all elementary students learn more
effectively when they are able to use manipulatives and handson applications to construct and shape their learning, shares
Breigh. This is why when it was time to introduce the concept
of simple machines to her classroom, Breigh looked to LEGO
Education.

Elementary teacher, Barb McClain, uses this hands-on language

arts tool to engage and motivate students to read and write.
The Need

As a Title I elementary educator for Grades 1-3, Barb
McClain is always looking for an engaging way to motivate
students to write. Many young students are very creative
and have lots of ideas but struggle to get their ideas down
on paper, which can make writing a frustrating experience.
She says, Children love LEGO bricks and enjoy creating,
building, and using their creations to tell their story.
The Solution
The combination of LEGO elements joined with the
interactive software provides a unique opportunity to
teach and reinforce elements of reading and writing. The
curriculum included in the activity pack correlates to all
of the language arts Common Core Standards. According
to Barb, A teacher can simply set the program to cover
the materials they need to teach and then stand back
and let the learning begin! The LEGO bricks enable the
students to create, sequence, and tell their stories in a
hands-on way and then later use the visual they created
to write their stories. The software allows the students to

publish documents that they are proud of and anxious to
share with their peers.
The Results
In fact, the students created quite a buzz around
school by sharing their StoryStarter experiences and
creations. Barbs classroom began having many visitors,
including teachers and administrators curious to see how
she was creating such excitement about reading and
writing. She said, I was approached by parents telling
me how excited their child was about the LEGO project
and couldnt wait for the weekend to be over so that they
could get back to school to work on StoryStarter.

The Need
At the Pittsburg State University Early Childhood Preschool Lab on

the campus of Pittsburg State University, Director Kari Cronister
teaches two groups of students. She simultaneously teaches
while also teaching three- to five-year-old preschool students.
This makes for busy days, so its important that the solutions
Kari brings into the classroom address multiple learning standards
while truly engaging students.
The Solution
The LEGO DUPLO Creative Builder Set, which introduces students
to building with LEGO DUPLO bricks and following simple directions,
supports many key curriculum objectives including exploring shape,
college students interested in becoming preschool teachers
space, position, and numeracy while also encouraging cooperative

building and teamwork. Since implementing the set, Kari has seen
an improvement in the students early math skills, especially
in the area of number recognition. Additionally, the activities
included challenge her preschool students to use descriptive
language to express their thoughts and create narratives about
their builds, supporting early literacy skills. Using the product in
this way has also fostered language development in their nonEnglish-speaking children. Students are actively learning but are
also having fun with the DUPLO set. Kari said, They quickly
became actively engaged and enjoyed replicating the cards
as well as creating their own masterpieces. Currently, the
set, which supports up to four students at once, is being
used during free-play time, but there are plans to use it at
the light table during their block center and to potentially
create an exclusive center focused on DUPLO Creative
Builder.
The Results
All in all, Creative Builder is a great fit for the lab
because both the college and the preschool students
have benefited from working with this user-friendly
set. The college students have gained experience
with a hands-on learning tool that can be used for both
assessments and play, and the preschool students enjoy
the opportunity to be creative and work through the
challenges together. Kari looks forward to expanding the
use of the set in her classroom and creating additional
learning opportunities for all the students, big or small.
