GOAL LINE TECHNOLOGY SHOULDNT BE INTRODUCED IN WORLD FOOTBALL.

Modern football came into existence in what it seems a century ago. Although soccer went
through great evolution before the modern football was born, with the introduction of penalty and
offside being the most prominent advancement in football, to name a few, it was relatively stable during
the past century. In these hundred years soccer spread tremendously throughout the world and now
with the modernization of stadiums, sports equipments and the preparation of major tournaments with
the world cup being the biggest sporting event in the world, football prides itself as the worlds most
popular game with over 2 billion fans in all over the world. World football governing body FIFA has a
successful record of governing global football since 1904. It is under this body where major alterations
to the laws of the game are discussed and decided upon. Now with the increasing number of
controversial goals in major tournaments, FIFA is considering as a necessity to introduce goal line
technology. FIFA president Sepp Blatter said, Goal line technology is no longer an alternative but a
necessity following the denial of Ukraines vital goal against England in their group D clash in June
19,Euro 2012. Although the introduction of goal line technology may seem a milestone in global football,
soccer will no longer be a sport but a form of business where the need for perfection is inevitable.
Goal line technology is such an expensive technology and substantial amount of money is
needed to implement this technology only in the stadiums of richer clubs and football associations.
Although the proponents of this issue argue that the technology is ready and has already been tested,
the fact is that this technology will only be used in richer competitions in Europe. This is unfair as it
demonstrates the difference in wealth between the west and other parts of the world. Where European
football will be modernized by the use of this technology and others, traditional football will still be
found in some parts of the world like Africa and Asia and this is a huge blow to FIFA as it governs not
only European football but global football as a whole. Another argument raised by some people is that
whatever the cost is, GLT will solve goal line controversies which ruined the prospect of some football
clubs and cost the jobs of some managers. However, one should know that goal line disputes are such
rare cases and spending this amount of money is inexcusable.
As FIFA is now opting for GLT, it is clear that FIFA is obsessed for perfection and with the
introduction of this technology FIFA will still be far from perfect. There are disallowed penalties and
contentious offsides which are more common then goal line disputes and as these cases are still
happening in football matches there is a conspicuous degree of injustice which may bring the need to
introduce other technologies and later the automation of whole football matches. Furthermore, it was
only after the 2010 world cup that FIFA introduced two more goal line referees to settle the matter of
goal line clearance but little has been achieved to solve this problem as goal line disputes still occur.
Likewise the introduction of goal line technology may seem another effort to solve this problem but the
fact is that it will bring unprecedented problems such as referees losing control of games to some extent
as they will heavily depend on the technology. Also, a simple fault which occurs in the system will cause
havoc and ruin the smooth flow of matches, the simplest being halting the game until the problem is
fixed.
One of the strongest arguments put forward by those who are in favor of this issue is that GLT
operates with an extraordinary speed and it only takes a fraction of a second to relay the decision to the
referee. Contrary to this absurd claim is the fact that football will lose its nature of spontaneity and
speed as there is an external system to decide whether a goal has been scored or not. More importantly
what keeps football so interesting and intriguing are the discussions about referees mistakes in the
media and among the fans and with the GLT put in place such an enthusiasm will be lost and there will
be no more suspense in football matches. All this means GLT will spoil and remove all the fun in football
which will rather make soccer a form of business not a sport any more.
In conclusion, pressure is mounting on FIFA to introduce goal line technology in professional
football as sport broadcasting media scrutinize every single error in football matches but with constant
human efforts to solve this matter FIFA will enjoy the praise of being the most conservative governing
body in world sport. As one of the FIFA members who voted against technology changes said The
human decision is a critical component of it. Its the beauty of the game and its what keeps people
talking in pubs afterwards, a technology free global football will reflect FIFAs motto For the Game for
the World.
