HI there!
My name Is James. I'm a fuII-tIme Sound EngIneer based In the Hawkesbury area
of NSW, AustraIIa {near Sydney).
I have worked wIth audIo professIonaIIy for 17 years as a Sound EngIneer, a MusIc
Producer and a fuII-tIme DJ. In fuIfIIIIng these roIes, I aIso deveIoped the skIIIs,
knowIedge and experIence needed to edIt and mIx dance routIne musIc to the
hIghest professIonaI standard.
CurrentIy, 90%of my work comes from peopIe who need professIonaI edItIng on
theIr dance routInes. I work for dance teachers, studIo owners, choreographers,
eIsteddfod adjudIcators and parents of dance students - worIdwIde!
I made thIs guIde to be a usefuI tooI for anybody pIannIng musIc for dance
routInes. It IncIudes 5 essentIaI tIps for creatIng quaIIty dance backIng tracks.
I am confIdent you wIII Iearn somethIng that wIII heIp you reach the next IeveI of
professIonaIIsm wIth your dance routIne musIc.
AII the best!
James

You don't need me to teII you that your choIce of musIc wIII make or break your dance
routIne. If you are a dancer, you probabIy aIready know that. However, thIs Is not the
pIace for song choIce advIce.
What I want to taIk about Is where to source the best quaIIty musIc fIIes. Once you have
chosen your songs, If you want a professIonaI soundIng backIng track you need to use the
best quaIIty musIc fIIes you can get your hands on.
Mp3, M4A and WMA are aII "compressed" formats. CompressIng a fIIe resuIts In a smaII
fIIe sIze wIth a reIatIveIy Iow Ioss of sound quaIIty. These have become the standard for
dIgItaI musIc because theIr smaII sIze makes them easy to downIoad, store and transfer.
Mp3, M4a and WMA are sImIIar quaIIty formats, however one MP3 Is not necessarIIy the
same quaIIty as another MP3, even If It Is the same song! It aII depends where the fIIe
came from, how It was compressed, how much It was compressed AND how It was
mastered. Same for the others!
The best pIace to source quaIIty musIc fIIes Is ITunes.com and Amazon.com or the artIst's
own websIte. The quaIIty In thIs case wIII be as good as It gets for downIoadabIe musIc,
however Amazon usuaIIy charges Iess than ITunes - as Iow as 99c per song.
If you have a choIce, do not buy songs that say "Mastered for ITunes". These wIII sound
better through your computer speakers but worse through your PA system.
AIso, equaI In quaIIty to downIoadIng the musIc, wouId be to extract the song as MP3 or
WMA off the orIgInaI CD {If you have It) usIng ITunes or WIndows MedIa PIayer.

GeneraIIy, the worst pIace to get your musIc Is off Youtube. It's fIne for gettIng
Ideas but you don't want to use a song rIpped off Youtube for your performance.
Youtube vIdeos are HIGHLY compressed because vIdeo fIIes are so Iarge and more
often than not, the audIo that comes wIth the vIdeo Is hIghIy compressed aIso. It
usuaIIy sounds cheap and nasty; especIaIIy through a Ioud PA system and even
more especIaIIy, If you are dancIng after someone eIse who used quaIIty musIc
fIIes for theIr routIne.
Now, If you want to stand out and use the absoIute best then you wIII want to buy
the orIgInaI CD and extract the songs off It In a compIeteIy uncompressed format
such as WAV or AIFF. These wIII sound as good as the CD ItseIf - even better than
an MP3 purchased from ITunes.
The CD doesn't even need to be new. SometImes you can get a second hand copy
off eBay or Amazon for next to nothIng. As Iong as It doesn't have scratches that
cause the CD to skIp, then one CD Is as good as another and the WAV or AIFF fIIe
you extract off It wIII be exactIy the same.
If I were a dancer competIng In a hIgh profIIe competItIon or TV dance audItIon, I
wouId defInIteIy go for thIs optIon. Every IIttIe thIng you can do to Improve your
dance routIne heIps!
The onIy free edItIng software that aIIows you to extract songs off a CD In an
uncompressed format {WAV), Is Wavepad Sound EdItor. OtherwIse there are many
free CD audIo extractIng programs you can fInd onIIne.

For the technIcaIIy mInded...
BasIcaIIy, the Iess conversIon a song goes through the better. Every tIme a song
fIIe goes through a conversIon process there wIII be a smaII but notIceabIe Ioss In
cIarIty.
Therefore, If you need to edIt your song, you shouId edIt and export your song |n
the exact same fIIe format It started In. For exampIe, If you downIoad a song In
MP3 format and edIt It, you shouId aIso exportJsave the fInIshed song as an MP3
usIng the exact same bIt rate and sampIe rate {usuaIIy 16 bIt J 41,000 Hz for
compressed formats).
"ConversIon" can mean from one fIIe format to another {e.g. MP3 to WAV) or one
bIt rate to another {e.g. 16 bIt to 24 bIt) or one sampIe rate to another {e.g.
41,000 Hz to 48,000 Hz). Just try to keep It the same as you started wIth!
Of course If you are bIendIng 3 songs together and 2 of them are In a dIfferent
format than the thIrd, then somethIng wIII have to be converted. To mInImIse
quaIIty Ioss, I recommend exportIng your fInIshed project In the format that the
majorIty of the songs started In.
AddItIonaIIy, If you happen to be usIng professIonaI software for your edItIng {IIke
ProtooIs), you wIII aIso need to make sure your 'sessIon settIngs' match the fIIes
you pIan to work on. 24 bIt J 48,000 Hz Is exceIIent for recordIng, but you wIII
Ioose quaIIty If you Import a musIc fIIe whIch Is onIy 16 bIt J 41,000 Hz {whIch
most are) because your program wIII have to convert It before you can start
workIng on It. ThIs Is not good practIce.

Lets say you want to be a IIttIe dIfferent...
There's a weII known pop song you'd IIke to use for your dance routIne but you
don't want to get caught usIng the same musIc as someone eIse In the same
competItIon. Maybe you want to be unIque?
The soIutIon... dance to a REMIX of the song! A remIx Is a song that has been
edIted or compIeteIy recreated to sound dIfferent from the orIgInaI versIon.
You couId have a MusIc Producer IIke myseIf create a custom remIx for you.
However re-mIxIng a song takes a Iot of hours and can be quIte costIy.
The aIternatIve Is to fInd a suItabIe remIx that has aIready been made. The best
pIace to search:
Sound CIoud Is a websIte where songwrIters, DJs and producers can upIoad theIr
musIcaI creatIons so they are avaIIabIe for the worId to hear. It Is not uncommon
that a popuIar song wIII have 10 or more remIxes on Sound CIoud, each of them
made by dIfferent artIsts who have recreated the song In theIr own styIe. About
50%of these artIsts aIIow theIr musIc to be downIoaded for FREE!
There Is a Iot of goId on Sound CIoud - so check It out!

Most peopIe are aIready aware of the two most popuIar free musIc edItIng
programs:
AudacIty {PC J Mac) and
Garage Band {Mac onIy)
Both of these have edItIng and IayerIng tooIs and a range of effects that many
dance teachers fInd suItabIe for most of theIr needs. You can aIso fInd many

There are however a range of other free programs wIth theIr own unIque features
that, If Iearnt, wIII Increase the scope of what you wIII be abIe to accompIIsh.
Keep In mInd, there are no free programs that deIIver the fuII capabIIItIes and
sound quaIIty that can be produced wIth hIgh end professIonaI software IIke AvId
ProtooIs wIth UnIversaI AudIo PIugIns, nevertheIess, each of these free programs

{I can onIy speak for myseIf here....)
1. It's fast! I usuaIIy have projects compIeted In Iess than 2 days.
2. It saves tIme! Just thInk of aII the thIngs you couId do If you dIdn't have to edIt
your own musIc!
3. It's easy! Anybody can attach musIc fIIes to an emaII and type some
InstructIons. Payment Is easy too. Once the job Is compIete, I emaII you an InvoIce
and you wIII be abIe to transfer the money onIIne.
4. You get better resuIts! There are many skIIIs for ImprovIng musIc that one
Iearns doIng an Advanced DIpIoma In Sound ProductIon that you wIII never Iearn
by sImpIy teachIng yourseIf. I've aIso spent many years workIng as a professIonaI
DJ - deveIopIng a Iarge range of creatIve bIendIng and re-mIxIng technIques that
dancers generaIIy know nothIng about.
I aIso work wIth the best edItIng and mIxIng tooIs In the busIness - worth over
$10,000. These 3 factors, aIong wIth my passIon and dedIcatIon to quaIIty, enabIe
me to cut and mIx dance routIne musIc to the hIghest professIonaI standard.
5. You get support! There are many ways I have been abIe to heIp my customers
other than sImpIy edItIng. I have been asked to suggest songs that hIt a certaIn
theme, Iocate songs that they couIdn't fInd themseIves {IIke rare InstrumentaI
versIons) as weII as gIve aII kInds of audIo and musIcaI advIce.
If there Is anyway I can heIp you wIth your next dance routIne, pIease do not

Need to quIckIy send musIc or vIdeo fIIes for someone eIse to hear or work on?
ThIs bonus tIp wIII heIp get you started...
MP3, MP4 and WMA fIIes are quIte smaII by today's standards and can sImpIy be
attached to an emaII or Facebook message. However In the event that a Iarge fIIe
{such as a vIdeo fIIe or an uncompressed musIc fIIe) needs to be transferred over
the Internet, there are a few optIons for fIIe-sharIng.
The most popuIar fIIe-sharIng tooI Is "Drop Box". It Is free to downIoad, easy to
use and you can transfer 2 GB of data every month for free.
There are aIso other free servIces avaIIabIe for fIIe sharIng whIch have theIr own
strengths and weaknesses. LIke Drop Box, they work on muItIpIe pIatforms {e.g.
PC J Mac J AndroId J IPhone J TabIet).
A free account at "HIgh TaII" wIII aIso aIIow you to upIoad 2 GB of data every
month, however unIIke Drop Box, the recIpIent does not need theIr own account
to downIoad the fIIes. ThIs wouId be a good optIon for a once-off transfer.
MIcrosoft's "SkyDrIve" {now caIIed "One DrIve") IncIudes 7 GB a month for free
and has some unIque features, as does "GoogIe DrIve" whIch IncIudes 5 GB a
month for free. Another popuIar fIIe transfer system that Is used by a Iot of bIg
companIes Is "We Transfer".
A more detaIIed descrIptIon of these appIIcatIons can be found on each of theIr
downIoad pages whIch you can Iocate very easIIy wIth a sImpIe GoogIe search.
