2. OBJECTIVES To determine the employee satisfaction level in the construction field of Bangladesh. To find the motivating or demotivating factors in the field base construction work.
3. INTRODUCTION Construction sector is one of the major and largest sectors in the world as well as in Bangladesh. The sector contributes a lot to the development of the country and also helps to remove unemployment problem. Generally a large number of skilled and unskilled manpower in needed to accomplish the development work of the country and therefore employee satisfaction level is much important factor to do the job perfectly. Motivation is much needed for the employees of the construction sector as the work is troublesome and needs hardwork. The risks of life are also much higher than any other sectors of the world. There are several factors that motivate and demotivate the employee in the construction field. As the large construction often take place on the remotest portion of the country, so employees and managers always demand for something new and challenging tasks and also demands for better facilities than the other sectors of the country.Place and environment of the work field may also have some impact on the employees performance and therefore satisfaction level may also vary with the place and environment of work. For this reason, office employees and field employees may not have the equal level of satisfaction. This study aims at finding the employee satisfaction level in the construction company of Bangladesh, evaluating the employee satisfaction level based on environment and finding the motivating and demotivating factors in the construction sector of Bangladesh.
4. LITERATURE REVIEW Job satisfaction is becoming an increasingly popular subject in the construction sector of Bangladesh as huge number of employment in a single construction project. As there is several constructions project is running in the country and it requires almost 2.0 million of work force, so job satisfaction level is of much importance for the construction companies to reduce the turnover rate either they are small of big in economic considerations. Studies have shown that job satisfaction can be relevant to understand individuals behavior and to predict labor market mobility (Clark, 2001, Freeman, 1978). Economists have been particularly interested in investigating the relationship of job satisfaction with other economic variables, including unionism (Meng, 1990), income and education (Clark and Oswald, 1996), and job security (Blanchflower and Oswald,1999). The contribution of the construction sector is quite remarkable in the national economy, but its existence is absent from the national economic plan. There are different sector in construction and through various activities the GDP contribution of the construction industry is about 1/5 th that of contributions of the agriculture sector (Ullah, 2000). The construction industry of Bangladesh is involved in the repair and maintenance of works; including internal finishes and services, and a wide variety of different type of new works such as road, bridge and dam construction as well as housing, electricity and mechanical engineering works. It is estimated that, the construction industry employs, 1.83% in 1995- 97(statistics 97) of the total labor force,it was 1.05% in 1990-91 (statistics 97). According to the Bangladesh bureau of Statistics report on monitoring of employment survey 2.0 million labor force is directly involved with construction sector out of total 51.0 million active labor force and the number is goes on increasing day by day as the construction sector in enlarging its arena (BBS, 2009). From the report of Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh it has been seen that construction sector shares about 9.07% of our total GDP in the FY 2010-2011 which is of the amount of 62325 crore BDT. As 2.0 million of active employed people are working in the construction sector of Bangladesh, and those who shares a good contributory part of our GDP so this sector has vast importance in the improvement of economic condition of Bangladesh.
5. METHODOLOGY To measure the job satisfaction level in the construction sector of Bangladesh four variables are choosen. The variables are the some factors that will directly influences the employees mind whether they are satisfied are not. The four variables are Autonomy (Ferrell & Skinner, 1988),Job Challenge(Cummings, Jackson, & Ostrum,1989),Performance Measures (Jaworski & MacInnis, 1989) and Job Security (Dubinsky & Hartley, 1986). Based on the four variables a questionnaire paper will be prepared which will consists of some questions. Each answer of the questions will be given a certain percentage of weightage. This questionnaire survey will be conducted among the employees of two construction companies named Infratech Construction Company. 10 % of the total employees will be asked for the answers. Based on the answers, given by the employees satisfaction level for each of the factor will be measured in percentage. The survey will also ask employees to list down the motivating or demotivating factors they are facing. Based on the answers, motivating and demotivating factors in construction job sector will also be listed in this research paper.
