NH001 B Wolfeboro (X05) is supposedly the oldest summer resort in America. (Also see NH026 - Wolfeboro Falls)
1. Ride Molly-the-Trolley for a narrated ride.
2. Visit the Wright Museum of World War Two History featuring items from WWII;
3. Also the Libby Museum has a collection of native specimens and artifacts.
4. Take dinner cruise aboard the Mount Washington; food is fantastic and afterward there is live music. Look
for the ice cream shop near the boat launching dock.
NH002 B Allenstown (A89) Museum of Family Camping, 2 miles east off SR28 in Bear Brook State Park, is
dedicated to the history of family camping displaying camping gear, photographs, publications and trailers of the past.
Also offers audiotape and videotape displays. Daily 10-4, Memorial Day weekend thru Columbus Day. Ph:

NH003 B Bretton Woods (A89,90) Mount Washington Cog Railway, [Gem site], is 6 miles northwest on SR302,
then 6 miles northeast on Base Road to 3168 Base Station Road. The old-fashioned, coal-fired steam locomotive or
the biodiesel train takes a 3-hour round-trip to the top of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast. There
is also a museum. Allow 3 hours. Tours given daily with trains departing 2 to 10 times daily on the half-hour beginning
at 8:30 or 10:30, late-Mayearly-Dec; Sat & Sun at 10:30 and 1:30, May 1late-May. Closed ThGv. Schedule varies

NH004 B Canterbury Center (A91) Canterbury Shaker Village, [Gem site], off I-93 exit 18, following signs, was
one of the nations most important Shaker communities. Today its a museum and historic site with 25 restored
original buildings and four reconstructions set among nearly 700 acres of pretty New England countryside. Visitors
can tour village and take tours. Read AAA TourBook (2013 pg. 181) for more detail. Allow 3 hours minimum. Grounds

NH005 B Cornish (A92) Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site [Gem site], is off SR12A at 139 Saint-Gaudens
Road. This early 1800s country tavern was the home & studio of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. View several
buildings, stables, carriage collection, and gardens. Concerts held on Sundays from early-June thru mid-August.
Allow 2 hours. Grounds open daily dusk to dawn. Buildings open daily 9-4:30, Memorial Day weekend thru Oct 31.

NH006 B Crawford Notch (A92) [Gem site]:
1. US302 winds along the floor known as Crawford Notch between steep, wooded Webster and Willey
mountains.
2. Arethusa Falls, 1.2mi. west of US302 is at the south end of Crawford Notch State Park and can be reached
by a steep, marked trail. The falls has a 200-foot drop, one of the highest waterfalls in New Hampshire. Ph:

3. Silver and Flume Cascades are east of US302 at the north end of Crawford Notch State Park. The Silver
Cascade shoots across smoothly sloping ledges and bounds over precipices in its 1,000-foot course down

4. Crawford Notch State Park embraces much of the notch. Has 5,950 acres, 12 miles west of Bartlett on
US302. The park has: camping, picnicking, hiking trails, visitor center, food services. Ph: 603-374-2272.
NH007 Franconia Notch (A95,96) [Gem site],
A. Franconia Notch (A95) is perhaps the most celebrated mountain gap in the East. It has more scenic
spots than any other White Mountain notch.
B. The Basin (A96), reached by trail from US3 north of The Flume (see below) is a deep glacial pothole at
the base of a waterfall. It measures 30 in diameter and 15 feet deep. Ph: 603-745-8391.
C. Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway [Gem site], off I-93 exit 34B, extends from Valley Station to the top of
Cannon Mountain. The tramway has 80-passenger cars making a vertical ascent of 2,022 feet in 8
minutes. Theres a summit observation platform at the top and trails leading to other scenic points. RV
campsites available. Allow 1 hour minimum. Daily 9-5, mid-May thru mid-Oct (weather permitting). $15

D. The Flume Gorge [Gem site], 852 Daniel Webster Hwy. (SR3), at the south end of Franconia Notch State
Park, is a chasm extending nearly 800 feet along the flank of Mount Liberty. A mountain stream tumbles in a
series of waterfalls and pools between 60- to 90-foot-high granite walls. An optional bus carries passengers
the first half-mile, it is then a 1.5 mile walk through the flume back to the visitor center. A well-constructed
boardwalk goes through the gorge with some steep grades. There are, however, some steep grades. Within
the flume are covered bridges, waterfalls, and cascades. Allow one hour. Daily 9-5:30, July thru August;
9-5 early-May to Jun 30, and Sept 1 to mid-Oct. $15; $12 (6-12). For confirmation of time, etc. Prices may

NH008 B **Glen (A96,97) Heritage New Hampshire is .5 miles north of US302 on SR16, use audio-visual
techniques to traverse more than 350 years of New Hampshire history. Includes a simulated steam train ride through
Crawford Notch. Allow 2 hours +. Daily 9-5, mid-May thru Columbus Day. Last admission 1 hour before closing. $11.

NH009 B Jaffrey (A98) Monadnock Mountain, reputedly one of the USs most climbed mountains, with easy &
intermediate hiking trails. Start from Monadnock State Park or from SR124 (see recreation chart A88).
NH010 B Kinsman Notch (A206) Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves [Gem site], is 6 miles west of North
Woodstock on SR112. The water from melting glaciers scoured out this 300-feet-deep gorge in Kinsman Notch. As
centuries passed, water seeped into cracks within the walls, expanded as it froze, and split away massive blocks of
granite that tumbled into the gorge, stacking up and hiding the river in places hence the name Lost. A self-guiding
tour includes boardwalks, bridges and ladders, a tight squeeze at Lemon Squeezer and a chance to stand under a
rock formation called The Guillotine. Walks average 60 to 90 minutes and walking shoes are recommended. The
caves can be individually bypassed. Allow one hour. Daily 9-6, JulyAug; 9-5. MayJun and SeptOct. Last
admission 1 hour before closing. Evening Lantern Tours depart Sat at 8pm, mid_jun thru Labor Day weekend. $17;

NH011 B Lincoln (A101)
1. Lincoln (town) is the western terminus of one of the most popular scenic drives, the Kancamagus
Highway. (See 2013 AAA TourGuideBook pg. 253 for details; also see NH021 White Mountain and White
Mountain National Forest.) In September the [Gem site] New Hampshire Highland Games & Festival,
featuring Scottish music, dancing and athletic competitions, is held at Loon Mountain Resort.
2. Clarks Trading Post, off I-93 exit 33, then 1 mile south on US3, features North American black bear
performances and rides on the White Mountain Central Railroad, also other attractions. Segway excursions
are also offered. Allow 2.5 hours. Daily 9:30-6, late-June to mid-Aug and Labor Day weekend; daily 10-5 mid-
to late-June and mid- to late-Aug; other times on A101. $19; $17 (65+); free ages 0-3. Segway excursions

NH012 B Londonderry (A101,102) Stoneyfield Farm Yogurt Visitors Center is off I-93 exit 5, 2.2 miles north on
ST28, follow signs to 10 Burton Drive. Features 12-minute video about yogurt manufacturing followed by guided tour

of the plant. Free tasting at end of tour. Allow 30 minutes. Guided tours offered on the hour M-F 10-4. Visitor center

NH013 B Manchester (A102)
1. The Currier Museum of Art, [Gem site], 150 Ash Street, located in an architecturally interesting building. On
display are American and European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts from 13

century to present.
Allow 1.5 hours. Sun-Mon and Wed-Fri 11-5 (also 1st Thurs of the month 5-8), Sat 10-5. Closed Jan 1,

2. Zimmerman House (A214) is reached by van from The Currier Museum of Art, 150 Ash Street. A 90-minute
tour of the house and grounds provides an introduction to one of Frank Lloyd Wrights Osonian houses. The
house, designed for Isador & Lucille Zimmerman in 1950, contains original built-in and free-standing
furniture, textiles and landscaping designed by Wright. Allow 1.5 hours. Tours depart Thurs-Mon at 11:30 & 2,
Apr-Oct; Mon &Thur-Fri, at 2; Sat-Sun at 11:30 & 2 Nov 1 to mid-Jan. Closed Jan 1, Easter, July 4, ThGv,

3. SEE Science Center, 200 Bedford Street, has interactive exhibits that focus on a variety of topics including
electricity, momentum, light, and gravity. A LEGO mill yard exhibit features more than 3 million LEGOs. Allow

NH013b B Meredith (A103) Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad, a 2-hour train trip along scenic shore of Lake

NH014 B Moultonborough (A103) Castle in the Clouds, 3 miles south of jct. SR25 & SR109, them 2miles east
on SR171. This tour-of-the-century mansion has a self-guiding tour with overview of castles history. Beautiful views,
and tours of Castle Springs bottling plant and Lucknow Brewery available. Allow 1.5 hours. Daily 10-4:30, mid-May to

NH015 B Mount Washington (A103) Mt Washington Auto Road is reached via SR16 at Glen House, about 8
miles south of Gorham. At 6,288 feet, Mt. Washington, in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, is the
highest peak in the Northeast US. The weather at its summit rivals that of Antarctica: the average annual temperature
is below freezing. Fifteen feet of snow is he winter norm, and summer temps rarely exceed 72F. The highest wind
velocity ever recorded was 231mph in April 1934. Conditions change within minutes from balmy to sub-freezing.
Nevertheless, in clear weather visitors are rewarded with a panorama view including the Atlantic Ocean, Maine, New
Hampshire, Quebec and Vermont. The scenic trip requires 30-45 minutes each way; frequent turnouts provide
emergency water needs. Low gear should be used both ways. If you dont want to drive, guided tours go to the
summit with 30-minute layover at the top. Allow 2 hours for auto tour or 1.5 hours for guided tour. See A218 for
details. Driving tour (includes CD) = $26 for driver; $8 per passenger; $6 ages 5-12; $16 motorcycle & driver. Guided

NH016 B Peterborough (A105,106) Miller State Park covers 489 acres 3 miles east off SR101. Offers a scenic
drive and foot trail to the 2,288-foot summit of Pack Monadnock Mountain. On clear days the view from the summit
reaches from Mt. Washington to Boston. Daily dawn-dusk, mid-Apr to mid-Nov. $3. Ph: 603.924.3672.

NH017 B Portsmouth (A106-109)
A. Portsmouth Harbor Cruises, 64 Ceres street at Ceres Street dock, travels the 14 islands of Portsmouth
Harbor to the Isles of Shoals and up the Pisctaqua River, etc. 1.5 & 2.5 hour cruises available. Trips depart

B. Strawberry Banke Museum is bounded by Marcy, Court, Washington and Hancock streets. The 10-acre

NH018 B Wakefield (A110) Museum of Childhood, .5 miles east of SR16, follow signs to Wakefield Corner.

NH019 B Warner (A110) Rollins State Park, is 5 miles north off SR103. A scenic road winds 3.5 miles up the
slope of Mount Kearsarge. A .5-mile trail continues to the 2,937 granite summit, with a tremendous view from the top.

NH020 B Weirs Beach (A110,111) Mount Washington Cruises depart from Weirs Beach docks. Offers 1- and 2-
hour scenic and sunset cruises of the northern end of Lake Winnipesaukee. A mailboat offers 2-hour cruises.
Dinner-dance cruises also available. Confirm cruise times & prices at 603.366.5531 or 888.843.6686. 2013 prices
range about $27-$49; $14 (5-12); $68-$122 (family of 2 A & 2C). There are three different boats and several different

NH021 B White Mountain and White Mountain National Forest (A253, 254)
1. Kancamagus Highway (SR112) This is a 34.5-mile scenic route with overlooks, campsites and picnic sites.
Saco Visitor Centers phone is 603.447.5448. Lincoln Woods Visitor Centers phone is 603.528.8721. Self-
guiding trails are near Covered Bridge Campground and at the Passaconaway Historic Site, 12 miles from
Conway near the junction with Bear Notch Road, which leads to Bartlett. About 1.5 miles west of Lincoln is
the WHite Mountains Visitor Center, which dispenses recreation information year-round.
2. The E. Stanley Wright Museum, northwest of jct., SR109 & SR28 at 77 Center Street. Museum displays
memorabilia of the US home front from 1939-45. Sounds very interesting. Allow one hour. Mon-Sat 10-5, Sun

NH022 Concord (A182-183) Conservation Center is off I-93 exit 16, then southeast on SR132, following signs to
54 Portsmouth Street. The center showcases passive solar & wood heating methods, including an envelope room,
fiberglass water tubes and a wood-chip gasification furnace. The adjacent French Wing, added 2001, is a timber-
framed, three-story addition with a dramatic two-story atrium that uses 60% less energy and 90% less water than a
conventional new building. A 2-mile interpretive hiking trail explores native flora. Self-guiding tours include a map and
audiotape. Center open Mon-Fri 8:30-5. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Trail open daily dawn to dusk.

NH023 Dixville Notch (A188) The northernmost and most dramatic of the White Mountain notches, rocky Dixville
Notch is traversed by SR26 between Colebrook and Errol. Among its scenic highlights are Lake Gloriette, the
Cathedral Spires, Cascade Falls, and Table Rock. Much of the area is within Dixville Notch State Park. The town also
is renowned for being one of the first places to declare its results for the New Hampshire residential primary and US
presidential elections.
NH024 Franklin (A193) Tarbin Gardens is at 321Salisbury Road. English-style gardens include flowering trees,
shrubs and perennials. Maps assist visitors. Greenhouses, childrens play area, koi and water lily ponds, Highland

cattle, hinny, goats, peacocks, and chickens. English cream tea can be enjoyed on the grounds JuneSept. Allow 1

NH025 North Conway (A223)
1. Conway Scenic Railroad, off SR16 and US302, offers nostalgic, narrated, round-trip train rides of varying
duration. A 1921 steam engine is used mid-Sept to mid-Oct and weekends in early winter, and early diesel
locomotive is used otherwise. Trains depart from the the 1874 North Conway Station. The Valley Train runs
to Conway and Bartlett, while the Crawford Notch train travels into the mountains. First-class dining cars are
available. Allow 1.5 hours min. Trains to Conway and Bartlett depart mid-Apr thru Dec 31. Crawford Notch

NH026 - Wolfeboro Falls (A254) New Hampshire Boat Museum, 399 Center Street, has rotating collection of
antique race boats, rowboats, and sailboats. Photos, trophies, models and boating memorabilia are on display;
