E.5 Installation and connection
Insert a SIM card in the modem SIM card slot. Follow the instruction printed on the GSM modem casing,
and close the SIM card lock. Make sure the PIN1 code security is disabled before inserting the SIM card.
The modem will not be able to make contact with the GSM network if SIM PIN1 is active.
Note! Make sure the SIM card PIN1 code security is disabled before inserting the SIM card.
Note! The GSM Modem SIM card must have data call subscription.
In PPRD 16.48 -16000 (separate power rack and distribution rack), the DIN Rail mountable DC-DC PSU
with GSM modem [1], hereafter described GSM modem [1] will have to be mounted on Rail - DIN mounting
angled L130 CD [3] hereafter described as DIN rail [3] combined with Screw M3 x 8 mm DIN 7985 POZI
PAN E [4], Spring Washer M3.2 DIN 137A [5] and Hex Nut M3 DIN 934 elzn [6], as shown in Figure E-3.

In PPRD 16.48 - 8000 (one rack with rectifiers and distribution side by side), the DIN rail for mounting the
GSM modem [1] is already installed in the distribution compartment.
Mount the PSM LMP I/F 9 pin dsub [2] to the GSM modem D-SUB.

The DC power cable harness for GSM modem / PNI Box (PCS /PCC) [12], hereafter described as Power
Cable [12], holds two different types of cables as shown in Figure E-5.
Figure E-5 Power cable harness description
The Power Cable [12] is to be mounted to the GSM modem [1] with negative (blue) wire in pin no: 2 (middle
position when looking into the cable clamps of the terminal block) position, and positive (brown) wire in pin
no: 1 position (rightmost when looking into the cable clamps of the terminal block) as shown in Figure E-6.

Regarding type of controller the Power Cable [12] is to be mounted in system as shown below in
Figure E-11 and Figure E-12.
Figure E-11 shows the mounting of the PCS part of the Power Cable [12] in PCS based systems. The cable
lugs are fixed to the distribution copper by Screw M6.0 x 8mm DIN 7985 POZI PAN EL [10] and Spring
Washer M6.4 DIN 127 [11]
Use Bracket. max 0.50mm str. tran. A [10] and two Fastener strips T18R 2.5X135 [7] for fixing of cable as
shown in Figure E-11 below.
Figure E-11 Power cable mounted in PCS controlled systems
Figure E-12 shows the PCC part of the Power Cable [12] mounted in PCC controlled systems. The PCC
internal signal connector board in the picture is located behind the PCC itself.
The positive (brown) cable is to be mounted in connector J1, pin no: 1 position (leftmost when looking into
the plug cable clamps). The negative (blue) cable is to be mounted in pin no: 2 position.

Check that the LED beside the antenna plug on the modem blinks for a while when the GSM modem is
establishing contact with the GSM network and then lights steadily when network contact is established.
Any excess length of cabling is recommended to loop up and strap.

The GSM modem [1] is connected to the system controller in the three different manners that are showed
below. (Figure E-15, Figure E-16 and Figure E-17)
The plug of the PSM LMP I/F 9 pin dsub [2] is fixed to the controller plug by means of the two Screw UNC
4.40 x3/16 pan Philips A2 [13]
In order to be able to communicate directly with the system controller unit (PCS/PCC) with PowCom (e.g.
service personnel with palm or laptop), one need to remove the PSM LMP I/F 9 pin dsub [2] for this
operation.

The modem is already initialised so it is not necessary to do Init Modem from the controller.
Open PowCom and select Communication | Properties and choose the communcation tab. Change the
communication timeout to 2.0.
Either use an other GSM modem connected to the PC, or use a GSM telephone with Bluetooth to call up
the GSM modem from PowCom. Do not put in any init string in PowCom. Enter the number to the GSM
modem in the telephone list, and set the baud rate to 9600. Select the number in the list and choose
connect.
If you get a no carrier message try again. Sometimes there may be a situation in the GSM network that
prevents a connection to be made. Normally it will connect if you try again. The installation procedure is
now complete.
Note! The GSM modems have been set up to 9600 baud. That is the only baud-rate that will work.
Note! Use of analog modems to dial up the GSM modem is not recommended since it can be
unreliable, in any case if an analog modem is used, the SIM card must have an associated data/
fax number that must be used.
Note! Do not reset the modem by connecting it to a PC and use the reset to factory settings command.
