b) The ratio of lengths of a submarine and its model is 30:1. The speed of the
submarine (prototype) is 10 m/s. The model is to be tested in a wind tunnel.
Find the speed of air in the wind tunnel. Also determine the ratio of drag
(resistance) between the model and its proto-type. Take the value of kinematic
viscosities of sea water and air as 0.012 Stoke and 0.016 Stoke respectively.
The density of sea water and air is given as 1030 kg/m
3
and 1.24 kg/m
3
respectively. (16)

per second per unit weight of water. (8)
ii) Derive an expression for specific speed of a centrifugal pump? (8)

b) A centrifugal pump discharges 2000 l/s of water per second developing a head
of 20 m when running at 300 rpm. The impeller diameter at the outlet and
outflow velocity is 1.5 m and 3.0 m/s respectively. It vanes are set back at an
angle of 30 at the outlet, determine i) Manometric efficiency, ii) power
required by the pump.
If inner diameter is 750 mm, find the minimum speed to start the pump.

radially and the velocity of flow through runner as constant, is given by the
relation

b) The outer diameter of an impeller of a centrifugal pump is 300 mm and outlet
width 40 mm. the pump is running at 900 rpm and is working against a total
head of 12 m. The vanes are set back at an angle of 35 and manometric
efficiency is 70%. Determine the following i) Velocity of flow at outlet, ii)
Velocity of water leaving the vane, iii) Angle made by the absolute velocity at
outlet with the direction of motion of outlet and iv) Discharge. (16)
