Terms of Reference
Intern

Position: Knowledge Management Intern

Duration: 3 months

Time: 3 months part-time (approx. 15h/wk)

Where: The Intern will be expected to come to New York UNFPA office and may work remotely
when necessary, in agreement with supervisor.

Supervisor: The intern will work under the direct supervision and guidance of the Chief of Humanitarian
and Fragile Contexts Branch.

A work plan with key deliverable for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be
agreed upon. Regular meetings with Interns and close contact via email, discussing processes and work
related outcomes will lead to a beneficial environment for the Intern

Background:

The Humanitarian and Fragile Context Branch (HFCB) is the core unit within UNFPA tasked with
providing guidance and support to the organization on emergency programming. The guidance and
support functions ranges from policy and standards development, providing technical support in gender
based violence, sexual reproductive health and data on population dynamics in humanitarian situations;
emergency financing, capacity building, partnership-coordination and communication in emergencies.

Key gap within the organization has been a lack of a simple interphase whereby country and regional
offices can easily access relevant for their programmes or even share knowledge with other country
offices. The gap has necessitated the development of a humanitarian knowledge hub or network that will
be accessible to both UNFPA staff and partners i.e. the public.

Tasks and responsibilities

1. Mapping priority humanitarian knowledge needs from country and regional.
2. Research from IASC partner agencies e.g. UNICEF, OCHA etc on their humanitarian knowledge
management systems.
3. Based on the report of the mapping exercise and research propose to the HFCB team and regional
humanitarian coordinators a framework for developing UNFPA Humanitarian Knowledge Hub-
network.
4. Liaise with regional humanitarian coordinators, and HFCB team members on existing resources to be
integrated into the knowledge hub.
5. Research, gather and upload content for the HFCB internal microsite.
6. Provide status updates and reports as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

1. Bachelors degree in International Relations and development, Humanitarian Practice or other related
field

2. Candidate must be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate programme.
3. Experience in developing knowledge management systems for a non-profit organization, ideally the
UN
4. Fluency in English
5. Ability to think and work logically and work precisely with attention to detail
6. Ability to write clearly and concisely
7. Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members of
different national and cultural backgrounds.

Learning Elements

Upon completion of the assignment, and depending on its duration, the Intern should be able to:

1. Increased understanding of the UN system
2. Understand UNFPAs general mandate and policies, especially in humanitarian settings
3. Understand the dynamics of an Inter Agency Programme
4. Learning UNFPA technical language and working procedures
5. Writing and formulating of documents
6. Networking with partners, country and regional offices,
7. Work as a team member in a multicultural setting
