Justin Alfond Senate President Maine State Senate 3 State House Station Augusta, ME 04333
President Alfond,
I write today and respectfully request to step down from the Joint Standing Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs and the Joint Standing Committee on Government Oversight.
As the Democratic nominee for Maines 2nd Congressional District, I have a responsibility and an obligation to the people of Maine to transition my role on these committees in order to prevent their important work from becoming unnecessarily politicized during an election year.
My decision does not come lightly. As you know, I love this work and believe deeply in its importance. It has been the highest privilege to serve the people of Maine and the Democratic Caucus on the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee as a member and as House Chair -- during my decade of Legislative service. In my years in the State Legislature, the work weve done to invest in education and economic development, and protect seniors, veterans, and middle class families during some of the toughest economic and political times has been by far the most rewarding. I seek to bring that spirit and standard of bipartisanship and dedication to Mainers with me to Washington.
Over the past two years, despite a divided and highly polarized government, the Appropriations Committee worked across the aisle to ensure that the state paid its bills, balanced our budget, and met our obligations to Maine seniors and communities, while also protecting our middle class. I thank you and Speaker Mark Eves for your trust in the committee, Senator Dawn Hill and Representative Peggy Rotundo for their leadership as Chairs, and Senator Patrick Flood and Representative Kathy Chase for their commitment to working together. The members of the Appropriations Committee work hard to solve the toughest problems facing our state, and I am

fortunate to have worked side by side with some of the finest members of the Legislature in room 228, and the incredibly dedicated staff of the Office of Fiscal and Program Review.
As Senate Chair of the Government Oversight Committee, I worked to bring Republicans and Democrats together to hold state government accountable, increase transparency, and steward the public's trust in state government. Im thankful to my House Chair Representative Chuck Kruger and to Senator Roger Katz, Representative Paul Davis and all members of the GOC, as well as the talented staff of OPEGA, for their willingness to work together on very tough issues over these past eighteen months.
While the Legislature has adjourned for the year, the work of these important committees continues. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve on both with lawmakers whose friendships and individual talents made it possible to overcome the greatest challenges.
Thank you for the opportunity and privilege to serve.
