Introduction
Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI

) systems should be used where ballast level control is required. DALI

is ideal for open space commercial environments. When cubicle and workspace layouts change, the lighting can
be regrouped and adjusted as needed. Other typical applications include college lecture halls, hospital operating
rooms, and corporate conference rooms. DALI provides tremendous exibility for both retrot and new installations.
DALI systems are easy to maintain when replacing lamps and ballasts, the wiring stays the same, and the
DIN-DALI-2 re-addresses the new ballast with the address and parameters of the original ballast.
Crestron

seamlessly connects with the open DALI protocol by way of the DIN-DALI-2 interface. This interface
can work with any Crestron control system as well as any power supply. A benet of this exibility is that Crestron
devices such as keypads, thermostats, photo and occupancy sensors, gateways, and other Cresnet

devices can
easily communicate with the DALI system.
Commissioning lighting groups, detecting faults, and replacing ballasts is simple when using the powerful Crestron
DALI Commissioning Tool. The user can develop interactive oor plans using Smart Graphics

, which provides
easier monitoring, management, and control of all the light xtures within the space.
Crestron delivers the most comprehensive DALI ballast solution with single, 2, and 3 lamp versions available for
any application, in any part of the world. Crestron Green Light

DALI ballasts support dimming a wide range of

uorescent lamps from 1100%, making it the most comprehensive ballast solution on the market today. The DALI
ballasts drive multiple lamp wattages in one unit, which makes lighting design easier and less expensive.
The new line of Crestron dimmable LED drivers provides high-power LED lighting with deep dimming to below 1%.
Available in 50 W and 100 W models with DALI control, GLD-LED drivers offer superior, smooth dimming technology
using a combination of duty-cycle and current dimming.
The optional built-in power metering feature is unique to Crestron DALI ballasts. The ability to measure, monitor,
and manage power to each light xture, while enabling daylight harvesting and load shedding, makes it easy to
implement a fully-integrated system that combines architectural lighting control and energy management all on
one platform. Optional power metering models track real-time energy usage of each load and provide essential
statistics to help manage and control utility costs.

DALI is a protocol used for the direct control of lighting ballasts. The DALI standard allows multiple ballasts to be
daisy-chained using low-voltage wiring for power on/off and dimming control. Up to 64 independently operating
ballasts can exist on a single DALI channel. DALI lighting is optimal for applications that require granular control of
each xture, such as open ofce oor plans and daylight harvesting in classrooms.
Control wires are topology free (up to 64 between each ballast), making wiring simpler than in 0 10 volts dimming
systems. DALI systems can report lamp and ballast failure for easier maintenance, and with Crestron PM ballasts,
controllers can query energy usage. Additionally, the DALI data is resistant to noise which allows it to run alongside
line-voltage power lines. The Crestron DALI Commissioning Tool simplies system installation and provides a setup
wizard with step-by-step conguration of ballast properties, groups, and scenes.
Spaces with changing tenants and large campuses with frequently repurposed rooms are the prime target of DALI
systems. Some of the key features are as follows:
Individual Addresses: Each DALI ballast has its own unique address on the system; therefore the system
is able to communicate with each ballast independently of the others.
Number of Addresses: Up to 64 addresses can be on one DALI loop. An unlimited number of loops can
be placed on a complete DALI networked system.
Grouping: DALI ballasts can be assigned from 116 groups on a loop, without the need for re-wiring.
The example below shows how Crestron communicates with DALI and other building systems.
Crestron Communication with DALI
Commercial Lighting DALI Edition Design Guide
Doc. 7386D | crestron.com 3
Bi-directional Communication: Ballasts are able to receive information as well as report back lamp or
ballast failures to the central DALI system.
Re-addressing Ballasts: Using the DALI Commissioning Tool, if a ballast fails on a system, the loop can
detect the missing address and re-address it when a new ballast is added back in its place.
Warranty and Compliance: Crestron DALI ballasts include a 5 year warranty. The ballasts are UL listed,
CE, and RoHS compliant.
DALI Requirements
The intent of the DALI protocol is to supply low cost, interchangeable ballasts that are simple to program and
commission.
Ballast Power Requirements: The ballast must be universal voltage (115300 volts), 5060 Hz, high power
factor, low harmonics, and have transient surge protection. When the initial voltage is applied, the lamps go to full
on or to a pre-set level.
Command Requirements: Ballasts are able to receive information and report back to the central DALI system
regarding lamp or ballast failures.
Lamp Response Requirements: DALI protocol requires a precise logarithmic dimming curve of 254 steps
(2.8% increase per step) so that all ballasts dim the same: 0100% for incandescent and uorescent, 3100% for
compact uorescent, and 0100% for LED.
Protocol Requirements: The DALI protocol includes the intent and electrical requirements, bits and bytes, collision
detection, and the type of wire that can be used.
Crestron and DALI-AG Working Group
Crestron is a participating member of the DALI-AG Working Group. Participating members are key suppliers of
products and technology that comply with DALI and IEC 62386 standards. As a member, Crestron participates in
committee proceedings and plays a role in the development of specications. Members have total access to all
DALI specications, which are critical to the development of products.

Emergency and DALI Ballasts
Crestron provides cold-start emergency ballasts to illuminate rooms with existing lights during a blackout therefore
eliminating the need for an emergency generator.
The emergency ballast ts into the xture with the DALI ballast. When a power outage is detected, the emergency
ballast lights up one or two lamps in the xture for more than 90 minutes. This complies with many state and local
codes, including the National Electrical Code and the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101).
In the example below, ve of the six xtures are without power. One of the xtures utilizes the emergency backup
to illuminate the room. This emergency ballast powering scenario tremendously reduces wiring costs and the need
to purchase and maintain costly backup power systems.

DIN-DALI-2 Interface
The DIN-DALI-2 is a DALI interface for Crestron systems and provides control of up to two independent DALI loops.
Housed in a DIN rail enclosure, the DIN-DALI-2 is a great low-prole Cresnet or Ethernet companion to the DIN-AP3
processor or any 2-Series control system. In addition to controlling the DALI data bus, it includes an integrated
DALI power supply. The single-wire connectivity simplies both new and retrot installations. Power-over-Ethernet
(PoE) versatility assists in situations with existing CAT5 infrastructure.
Controls up to 128 DALI ballasts
Cresnet or PoE communication for single wire installation
Crestron DALI Commissioning Tool for easy setup
Override input for emergency mode
9 M wide DIN rail mounting
For the DALI protocol to communicate with other protocols a control interface is necessary. The interface acts as
a language translator, allowing the DALI protocol to be understood and used by other protocols such as Cresnet,
BACnet, and Ethernet. Using the DALI protocol, the primary building systems can communicate together easily.
The Crestron DALI-to-Cresnet or Ethernet interface is the DIN-DALI-2.
DALI Power Supply
The DIN-DALI-2 has a built-in DALI power supply, eliminating the need for a separate power supply. The
DIN-DALI-2 gets its own power either through Cresnet or PoE. This simplies wiring to the DIN-DALI-2 module.
The power from Cresnet or PoE is used to power the DALI controllers if the DALI power switch is set to INT.
All 128 DALI ballasts can be powered in either Cresnet or PoE mode.
Power Requirements
PoE Requirements 13 W (0.270 amps @ 48 Vdc), regardless of DALI POWER setting

DALI LED Drivers
Crestron dimmable LED drivers provide high-power LED lighting with deep dimming to below 1%. Available in
50 W and 100 W models with DALI control, GLD-LED drivers offer superior, smooth dimming technology using a
combination of duty-cycle and current dimming.
Crestron LED Drivers (GLD-LED) provide manufacturers of dimmable LED lighting xtures with a high-performance,
cost-saving LED driver solution. Offered in two compact case styles, the GLD-LED series ts easily into a wide
range of enclosures and xture designs. The DALI control enables compatibility with virtually any lighting control
system. Models are operable between 120 and 277 volts, reducing inventory costs for manufacturers serving
multiple regions.
Models featuring DALI control are available in either single or 2-channel congurations. The 2-channel option
provides two independently controllable channels in one housing, offering a cost-saving, space-efcient solution
for use with tunable white lighting and xtures with separate direct and indirect lighting components.
Crestron Green Light Dimmable LED Drivers are programmable using the CREScode

LED Driver Conguration

Tool, allowing each LED driver to be matched perfectly to its xture at the factory. The hardware/software utility
provides a simple means of selecting the dimming curve and setting the minimum dimming level, NTC temperature
and output current. The output current can be set individually for each LED output. The use of programmable LED
drivers reduces inventory requirements, allowing a single driver model to be used with numerous different xtures.

DALI Control Cable
The DALI standard does not require shielded wire. However, unshielded wire may be subject to induced voltage
degradation and interference. Crestron recommends the use of shielded cable because if unshielded DALI cable is
used and improperly installed, signal failures may occur. DALI control wire shall be sized appropriately based upon
voltage drop due to cable length. Crestron recommends 1622 AWG based upon cable length. The DALI protocol
standard can communicate up to 980 ft (300 m). Per the NEC, class 1 DALI control cable may be run in the same
conduit as line voltage wire.

Individual Ofce
By controlling the lighting xtures with the DALI control system, daylight harvesting and room occupancy sensing
can be achieved easily by adding sensors.
In the individual ofce example below, the xture closer to the window is dimmed lower than the one further from
the window based on the amount of natural light. The photo sensor measures the outdoor light while the
occupancy sensor determines if the room is in use. The Cameo keypad provides the user with control of preset
lighting scenes and dimmer control.

Open Ofce
Economies of scale really start to take hold when installing a DALI control system in larger ofce spaces. Easier
wiring across multiple units decreases installation time. The ability to move light xtures around the grid without
the need to re-run wire becomes invaluable.

Training Room
Each light xture is powered directly from the grid with each row of lights controlled by a separate channel on the
DALI control system. One channel dims the row closest to the windows, while the second channel dims the other
row. Both a photocell and occupancy sensor is connected to the DALI control system for energy savings.
The example below shows how a DALI control system can be utilized in a training room setting.

Glossary of Terms
Ballast
An electrical device required in uorescent and high intensity discharge (HID) xtures that furnish the necessary
voltage, current, and waveform for starting and operating the lamp(s). In the United Kingdom, it is sometimes
referred to as a choke or control gear.
Current
The electrical rate of ow expressed in amperes similar to the water ow rate in a pipe (gal/min).
Dimming ballast
An alternate device used to obtain the conditions (voltage, current and waveform) for starting and operating the
lamp(s) while providing variable light output, i.e. dimming uorescent lamp source(s). It must be matched to the
lamp type, voltage and quantity. It is also available, with less capability, for HID sources.
Emergency lighting
When the normal power supply fails, emergency lighting is the illumination that automatically lights the path
towards the exit location(s). It may also serve to satisfy life safety and security lighting requirements.
Fade delay
The time interval between the selection of a new light intensity for a particular lighting zone and the beginning of
that zones change to the new level.
Fade time
The total time it takes a dimmer to change lighting from one level to another.
LED driver
A self-contained power supply that has outputs matched to the electrical characteristics of the LED or array of
LEDs.
Line voltage
The standard 120 volt power provided by receptacles and for lighting xtures in commercial spaces, it might refer
to 277 volt power feed for uorescent xtures.
Occupancy sensor
A sensor that works with certain Crestron lighting systems to save energy and increase convenience by
automatically turning lights on when space is occupied and off when space is vacant.
Activate alternate sets of lights
Activate 100% of lighting power
Deactivate all lights

Photosensor
A control agent for xtures that can automate light levels. Some photosensors qualify controls for certain rebates
and incentives.
Power
Power is expressed in unit watt (UW) The time rate of ow of energy in a circuit. Product of the voltage and current,
also expressed in volt-amps (VA).
Scene
The lighting effect achieved by adjusting one or more zones of lighting to the desired intensity.
Self-ballasted lamps
Fluorescent or discharge lamps that have an integral ballast.
UL Listed
A product adhering to the standards of Underwriters Laboratories, a company nationally recognized for product
safety testing (the product is not approved nor tested for performance). Underwriters Laboratories was initially
created by insurance companies to reduce re risks. In Canada, CSA is the listing required.
Voltage
The electrical power, in volts, of force/pressure supplied by an electrical circuit to a lighting source. Standard US
power supply is 120 volts 60 cycle (277 volts 60 cycles in commercial spaces). Standard power internationally is
220/240 volts 50 cycles. It is conceptually the pressure of the power supply similar to the psi pressure in a pipe.
Watt
The unit of power consumed by any electrical device or lamp (bulb).
