The Lack of Color in the 0=0 Hall

In the Golden Dawn tradition, a great deal of detail is paid to the colors or lack of colors. In the
hall of the initial grade, the 0=0 hall is curiously colored. The 0=0 hall is almost devoid of color.
The hall is furnished with black and white furniture. Most members wear black and white
clothing. The only color shown in the 0=0 hall is typically displayed by the middle pillar officers
and the members of the hall as they wear red socks. The Heirophant wears the most color as
he/she wears a red cape. The Hegemon wears a white tunic with a red cross. Additional colors
can also be shown by the Preamonstrator (Blue) and the Cancellarius(Yellow) . The symbolism
of of these colors can be interpreted in the following manner. It should be understood by all
students of the Hermetic Arts that the process of perfecting the stone is the process of the
magnus opus. This is a personal and spiritual alchemical transmutation. This is typically a three
stage process. The negredo, the albedo, and the rubelo are the magnus opus alchemical stages.
There can be an additional stage, cinitritas. In my personal practice, I have seen that cinitras is
usually immediately followed by rubelo. Hence, I would like to think that cinitras and rebulo are
linked.
This process is reflected on the robes of the officers of the middle pillar. The Heireus, wearing a
black cloak, is the representative of the first alchemical step, negredo. The description of his
station also epitomizes his/her chaotic role. "I'm the Master of Darkness."(1) The step of negredo
is alchemically interpreted as the process of chaos. The color of the robes of the members is also
black. This could imply that the Heirius and the neophytes are engulfed in a world of chaos. The
next step of purification is albedo, white. This step refers to the process of purification. I have
understood that this process is attained after reaching a certain level of spiritual maturity. We are
constantly placed under the fire of negredo to learn and grow spiritually. Like ashes after a fire,
we are made white through the fires of trials. The Hegemon wears the cloak of purity. "
I...conduct(s) from Darkness to Light. The White Color of my robe is the color of purity..."(2)
The next step of purification in alchemy is rubedo, red. In alchemy, rubedo is very hard to attain
and this is also true in our spiritual and mental processes. Only an experienced alchemist can turn
a white substance into red. This requires great work, humility and transformation. The iconic
representative of this step is the Heirophant who wears a red cloak and has a crowned scepter in
his/her hands.
This path is also described in the last days of Christ. Despite our religious preferences, we should
at least appreciate and respect his teachings. This should not come as a surprise since the robes of
the middle pillar officers carry a cross. When Jesus goes to the temple, he finds the money
changers inside the temple. Jesus is so angry that he proceeds to clean the temple by chasing out
the money changers.Jesus tried to cleanse the temple with his righteous fire. To say the least, this
must have been a chaotic process, negredo. We could interpret that this is the negredo stage of
his transmutation. This certainly infuriated the money changers and leading patriarchs of
Jerusalem. The money changers wanted Jesus dead. Eventually, the chaos of the money changers
made Jesus go through another step of purification. Jesus is tortured, crucified, and is left only
with a white garment to cover his nakedness. At this point, Jesus has become albedo. Like in
alchemy, Jesus attained this step by showing his strength of character and spirit. When Jesus
comes back, Jesus comes back wearing red. This could mean that Jesus has attained his highest
and last power. He has attained his magnus opus.
The Bible relates that the ground shook and it rained after Christ's Crucifixion. This left the
ground black like the robe of the Heireus. The middle path of the middle pillar of his cross was
white from his garment, like the robe of the Hegemon. At the top of the middle pillar, the letters
INRI crowned the cross. Could it be that the four letters stand for In Negridine Rubelo Ipsum (In
darkness, the red wins) which was his whole message all along? Could it be that Jesus was
saying the same thing that the 0=0 hall is trying to teach us? We can all reach a state of rubedo
exaltation.
